Like in every Chinatown, much of the architecture is done in a predominantly red color, since that's considered the most lucky color by the Chinese. Kathy doesn't really believe in that and wears clothing in all different colors. Her mom definitely prefers red though.Read more

Pancake Fish

When Kathy came out of the bakery, she not only got herself a couple of buns but she had a bag of these baby pancakes for me. I love to get this snack whenever we go to Chinatown in New York. They are, essentially, little pancakes that are very light and fluffy. I forgot what they are called in Chinese but we just call them baby pancakes. The ones in New York are just round balls. In London, they are made into little fish. I like the new look! I guess they can be made into any shape though, depending upon what mold you use to cook them in. It was so nice of Kathy to find these snacks and get them for me. What a wonderful wife she is!
The baby pancakes tasted exactly the same as what we have in New York but Kathy's buns were slightly different. She finished them, but felt that what we had back home was a lot better. I guess it all depends on what you're used to.Read more

Das asiatische Herz der Stadt - unübersehbar dekoriert mit vielen roten Lampions und chinesischen Schriftzeichen an den Restaurants. Ein Viertel das fast wie eine andere Welt wirkt. Man findet hier ausschließlich chinesische Läden, Handwerksbetriebe und Restaurants mit gebratenen Gänsen in den Schaufenstern. Der Eingang wird durch das große chinesische Tor markiert.Read more

La verdad es que se nos echó el tiempo encima y tras tomarnos unas bebidas orgánicas (terrible limonada de pepino...) nos pusimos a buscar un lugar para cenar. Como no nos decidíamos acabamos comiendo otra vez en un chino donde pedimos tres platos diferentes y acabaron trayendo lo que quisieron porque no tenían de nada.Read more

No Business Like Show Business

I decided not to set an alarm this morning, thinking I'd wake at around 8am, 9 at the latest, but as it turns out, I needed the sleep and didn't wake up until 10! Having a room with no windows didn't help, it was pitch black!
Once I realised the time, I got up, showered and organised, and made my way to Leicester Square. The plan for the day was to see a show or 2, and there's a TKTS stall in Leicester square, where you can buy same day show tickets, often discounted.
I ended up settling on a matinee of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and also bought a ticket to Guys and Dolls for that night.
I had plenty of time to spare before the show, so I decided to explore the area, and find something for lunch.
I found the Royal Opera House and Drury Lane, then stopped for a burger at Byron Hamburgers. I had a delicious burger and a 'hard shake' - a chocolate thickshake with Baileys, yummmmmm!
By then it was time to find the Aldwych Theatre for my first show of the day, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. I chose this one because I'd seen it win a few Tony Awards a few years back, so I knew it would be good!
Beautiful follows the life of Carole King, from being a young girl with a dream, to an extremely successful songwriter, to a star in her own right. She suffered a bit of heartache, but the music is truly spectacular - I actually didn't realise how many CK songs I knew! I sang and danced and laughed and cried all the way through it, and I really hope it comes to Melbourne so I can take Mum to see it. I have seen it's coming to Sydney, so hopefully it's only a matter of time!
I came out of the show at around 5pm, so I had a couple of hours to race back to the hotel, grab a coat and head back out again.
On my way to the Phoenix Theatre, I stopped and grabbed dinner at NY Fold, a New York style pizza shop - my favourite! I sat down to eat my pizza slice, then headed across the road to see Guys and Dolls.
I picked this musical for 2 reasons, the obvious being it's star - Rebel Wilson! The Aussie girl gone Hollywood starlet now has her name in lights on London's West End. The other reason was that Guys and Dolls is a Broadway classic which I've never before had the opportunity to see.
It was everything I'd hoped for and more - Rebel was wonderful, and it was perfectly over the top and colourful. Plus I nearly cried when the cast sang 'Sit Down You're Rocking The Boat'. We performed that song when I did dancing as a kid, and I didn't realise it was from this musical. An extremely exciting surprise!
After the curtain call was over, I thought I'd see if there was much of a crowd surrounding the stage door to meet Rebel, and there was! I hung around for about 20 minutes, and there were around 30 or so people around when she finally came out. She was so kind and gracious, saying hi to fans, taking selfies and signing autographs. I tried to say something about being a fellow Aussie when I handed over my program for her to sign, but I don't think she heard me!
On a high after my huge day of shows and 'meeting' Rebel, I jumped on the tube and headed back to my hotel.Read more

Erster Tag des Kurztrips, die Airbnb Unterkunft ist ausbaufähig aber wir wollen ja sowieso lieber den ganzen Tag die Stadt bestaunen. Also machen wir uns sofort wieder auf den Weg in die Stadt, um die U-Bahn Karten und Infos für die nächsten Tage an der Touristen Information abzuholen. Die Wege sind noch ungewohnt, aber 1 Minute vor Ladenschluss schaffen wir es noch.
So gut gerüstet erkunden wir gleich noch die Nebenstraßen und stoßen auf china town, das bei grauem Himmel und Niesel aber etwas von seinem Eindruck einbüßen muss.
Nach dem Einkaufen erfahren wir auch gleich wie die rush hour in London aussieht und entscheiden uns für den Fußweg aus der City.Read more

Das Abendessen nehmen wir im Browns zusammen mit Wendys Familie ein. Das Restaurant wirkt auf den ersten Eindruck sehr edel und ist komplett ausgebucht, dank der Qualität des Service und der lauten Musik fühlen wir uns allerdings auch in unseren Trekking-Klamotten bald nicht mehr Fehl am Platz. Wir essen sehr leckeres Lobster-Risotto und Hähnchen mit Pommes und verstehen die Klassifizierung des Resaurants nicht ganz.Read more

Met a student from US and a guy from Mexico, both super cool. He interned at Google at now travelling to find what he really want to do! Probably travel while working like me :))) We chatted a lot about countries, tech, cultures, the Mexico guy really want to get into clubs to hit on some girls, but we are not interested haha. People on streets even said they give us free shots, no way that's just creepy, how can it be free? We walked in london for like 2 hours, really good to have a walkable city. Das Musical läuft im Prince Edward Theatre.

Das Prince Edward Theatre ist ein Theater in London, England. Es befindet sich in der Old Compton Street in der Nähe des Leicester Square im West End. Das Theater bietet Platz für 1618 Zuschauer.

Das Theatergebäude wurde 1930 nach Plänen des Architekten Edward A. Stone gebaut. Die Innenausstattung wurde von Marc-Henri Levy und Gaston Laverdet entworfen. Das als Mehrzwecktheater konzipierte Haus sollte als Spielstätte für Musicals, Revuen und Kinovorführungen dienen.

Das Prince Edward Theatre eröffnete seinen Spielbetrieb am 3. April 1930 mit einer Aufführung des Musicals Rio Rita. Am 2. April 1936 wurde das in London Casino umbenannte und als Kabarett-Restaurant umgebaute Haus neu eröffnet. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs diente das Theater vom Juli 1942 bis zum Kriegsende unter dem neuen Namen Queensberry All Services Club als Unterhaltungsclub für Militärangehörige. Nach dem Krieg kehrte man zum Namen London Casino zurück und nahm den alten Revuebetrieb wieder auf. 1954 wurde das Theater in ein Kino umgebaut und fortan als Castino Cinerama Theatre betrieben.

Nachdem es 1978 wieder in ein Theater umgebaut worden war, erhielt das Haus seinen ursprünglichen Namen Prince Edward Theatre zurück und eröffnete den Spielbetrieb mit der Uraufführung des Musicals Evita.

Am 6. April 1999, exakt 25 Jahre nach dem Sieg der Popgruppe ABBA beim Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton fand im Theater die Uraufführung des ABBA-Musicals Mamma Mia! statt.

Wir hatte tolle Plätze, und zwar eine eigene kleine Mini-Loge mit 2 Platzen mit perfekter Sicht auf die Bühne! Besser geht es kaum.

Bevor das Musical losging mussten wir natürlich noch ein Foto von mir und der Wunderlampe machen und ich habe noch ordentlich Geld für ein Programmheft, eine Tasse und ein T-Shirt im Shop gelassen.

Das Musical hat uns beiden gut gefallen. Schatz fand es teilweise etwas zu romantisch, aber der Dschinni war großartig und lustig und Schatz hatte auch mit den englischen Texten keine Probleme.

Ich glaube, mir hätte es auf Deutsch nicht so gefallen. Die Lieder klingen einfach im Englischen besser.

Gegen 22:30 Uhr war das Musical dann zu Ende.Read more

Es sind witzige Legobauten zu sehen, unter anderem die Queen und Robin Hood.
