  • Day11

With it being Labor Day here in the USA, I decided to get in the car and drive to the coast. Ending up at Pismo Beach and having a great seafood lunch and a few IPA's by the pier at a place called Wooly's.

  • Day20

Had the pleasure of being driven around Paso Robles visiting our companies vineyards. Beautiful part of the world. While here we visited some lovely wineries to see the difference between the east side and the west side.

Wineries we visited included Sculptera Winery, Halter Ranch and Tablas Creek Vineyard.

Great day out finished with a late lunch at La Cosecha having a really nice Paella.

  • Day16

The freeway was hot and boring and seemed to go on for ever and we stopped in a rest area (the helpful sign said the next one was another 120 miles away) for a pee break and I discovered the delights of a wet buff round the neck. Not much to say about the freeway ride, except that the number of the vineyards increased as did the areas they covered. The contrast between the brown natural vegetation and the deep green cultivated areas was stark. We also saw our first (and last) nodding donkey oil field, and until this time pines and palm trees had never co-existed in my mind, but here they are all over the place!
We finally stopped for lunch at about 2:30 at Big Bubba's Bad BBQ, and we opted to share a wedge salad as we were both still full with cake. When the waitress brought out a plate, I thought it was the plate to share, but no they had split the meal and that was one of two plates! It was very nice, beautiful fresh salad with just a small amount of pork belly and blue cheese.

Having seen all the signs for wine tasting along the road the French wanted go to a vineyard to taste and choose wine to take home. Rui asked if we had any objections, but we had no schedule to keep so we stopped at the first one we came to along the road back to the coast. It was a lovely place, though we found out it has been bought by a Japanese company. The family made their selection and off we went again. There were a lot of turkey vultures in the sky and some interesting properties along the way. They was also a place advertising honey tasting, which would have been nice to look at. We saw signs to Hearst Castle, another vineyard, and the house/mansion had been built to look like a castle.Read more

  • Day16

A bit of a misnomer, the long route inland was due to the bridge repairs on highway 1 and we couldn't get to Big Sur which would have been part of the route, but we headed north to Point Piedras Blanca where a colony of elephant seals have taken up residence. They are enormous, though this was not as stinky as the last time, according to John, as there were fewer animals. There was also a good size flock of pelicans on the rocks and water.Read more

  • Day16

We arrived finally at the hotel in Pismo Beach and were quite tired and glad to be off the freeway. The French family have to get an early flight on Thursday, so this evening we had the farewell meal at a Japanese restaurant just across the from the hotel. It was a good meal and though our communication has been patchy, they are a fun family.

  • Day17

For the first time both John and I were woken by the alarm at 6:30, so I guess we must have been tired! Breakfast eaten we loaded the bags into the van and set off on quite a long ride, as with the need to get the family to the airport the riding time had been squashed from a day to just over half.
We picked up route 101 and again saw bells along the side of the road with signs saying Historic route, El Camino Real. Originally these highlighted the placement of missions and were a day's horse ride apart. Many have now disappeared, but we did see a lot.Read more
