Day 16–21
Gisborne

On to Gisborne today crossing the bailey bridge at Hikawai. There is so much slash in the streams and rivers in this area. Work is beibg done to clear it and fences being rebuilt. Wil take along time before it is all done. Parked up at the Gisborne NZMCA park for the next 5 nights. It is just across the beach which we strolled along in the afternoon
Tuesday we walked into town and stopped at the Sunshine Brewery for pizza and a drink for lunch. Much needed washing done in the arvo
Wednesday
Thursday we went for a bike ride into town and back. Very easy riding as all flat.
Friday went for a walk to the waihirere falls and then later in the afternoon went up to the lookout above Gisborne. Great view of the beach if they trimmed some bushes. Then down to Cathy and Haydens for a dinner and a catch up. Have not seen them for a few years. Great to see these 2 again

Day 14–16
Tokomaru Bay

Freedom camping at this lovely bay for a couple of days. Went for a walk along the beach and back through the village on the installed day. Next day wenr for an 11.8km walk to the boat ramp. The pier is closed as some of the it at the end has been washed away but you can still access it. Stopped at Cafe 35 to get pies for lunch, a paua pie for Keith and a mince on for Brenda. Great pies. A bit of light rain as we got back to the camper and on and off for a few hours to have the sun come out again later. We moved the camper about 100m down the road to a nicer spot and Greenview of the bay.Read more

After leaving Maraenui we stopped at a bay for morning tea where we came across some old trators on a road trip to raise money for children's mental health. We saw them again the next morning after leaving Te Araroa. Onr night at Te Araroa NZMCA park. We were going to stay at Waihau Bay but the campground was a bit run down. Went for a walk around the village and saw the pohutakawa tree that is very old. Nice tidy park.Read more

Day 11–13
Maraenui

Spent a couple of nights at a POP at Maraenui. This is a lovely spot with hot showers, toilets etc and right on the beach front. Keith threw his line in the water but no fish for him that day. Luckily for us some others staying there had more luck with taking a long line out with his kayak and gave us some snapper for tea. Fantastic sunset that night that went on for ages. There were showers of rain each side of the where the sun when down.Read more

Day 9–11
Opotiki

Today we woke up to grey skies again and drizzle. We took a small detour to a place we used to stay at with the kids. These units still look the same after all these years but the flying fox has gone. Movrd on to Opotiki NZMCA park. Rain off and on all day so once again sitting in the camper and not doing much. The next morning we back tracked to Whakatane to do some shopping. Back at Opotiki for some laundry and then we had happy hour with 2 other couples. By this time the sun had come out. This progressed to a drink at the club and then to a pub for dinner. A very enjoyable evening. We found some ants in the hatch so had a clean out of hatch. Hopefully we won't get anymore.Read more

This morning we moved on and after doing some shopping at The Hub in Whakatane we went to a freedom camping spot at the Ohope boat ramp to sit out the wet weather. It is raining now but not windy so not too bad. Might move on tomorrow to Opotiki or stay here another night. At least we have made it to the East Coast😊. Went for a walk along the beach once the weather cleared later in the day.Read more

Day 6–7
Awakeri Hot Springs

Moved on to Awakeri Hot Springs. Hot pools, showers, and washing machines all for a reasonable price. Called in to Keiths cousin Lynne and hubby Tony on the way. Lovely spot in amongst the trees. Nice soak in the pools in the afternoon.
Sunday morning we went for a "walk" up the hill behind the campsite. The first section was fairly steep but tolerable if you took it easy. After that you walk along the ridge line until you come to the trig station at the summit, after then it is much easier downhill. You come out of the bush onto farmland until get to the main road. 1.5 ks down the road you complete the loop. We had a good soak in the thermal pools afterwards. Ngongotaha NZMCA

This park is quite big with lots of different areas for parking. This is a busy place with many coming and going all the time. We parked at the top with a view of the lake in the distance just above the tree tops. Went for a walk into the village and back. Not a lot to see. The first vehicle to join the NZMCA in 1956 was bought out of the shed for anyone to have a look. Thursday we went into Rotorua itself to do some shopping.Read more

Little Waipa reserve

On to Little Little Waipa reserve for 2 nights freedom camping This reserve is maintained by the Waikato Council and what a great place it is. Clean facilities, long drop toilets and free showers. Also a couple of free BBQs. Went for a walk 13.5km walk to Arapuni dam and swing bridge in the afternoon. Wednesday morning we followed the walkway the other way from the reserve on our bikes. Natasha and Rueben visited us for a BBQ tea and bought lots of goodies from their gardens. Had a really nice catch up with themRead more

First day back on the road and a stopover in Cambridge to catch up with our friends the Reed family, Mark, Andrea, Willow and Hudson. Bit tricky getting in and out of the drive.
