    Leaving home

    June 11, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

First day free from quarantine after Covid yay. Roger drove me to the airport around 4. Flight was delayed by 30 minutes. Lovely quiet evening flight - lights of cities looked so pretty. Arrived at Naumi hotel and met up with the other 5 in the advance party. Nice hotel with free minimal. Got a lovely backpack as a dicker data/lenovo gift. Had a great dinner. Early start tomorrow leaving for airport at 5.30am.Read more

    Arriving in Tokyo

    June 12, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

About an 11 hour flight from Auckland to Tokyo then 1 hour bus ride to hotel in Tokyo Bay. Beautiful location. Hotel room is a bit different with slippers in the entrance, toilets with all sorts of buttons. You get guest pyjamas which you are allowed to wear anywhere in the hotel. Plan is to have the free ramen which is available at 10. Perhaps a relax in the Onsen - challenge is you have to go naked but our tour guide reckons we will find that freeing. Fortunately the women's pool has a daily password!!!Read more

    Tokyo & Lenovo Lab

    June 13, 2023 in Japan

This morning we first went to Tokyo Tower where we caught a lift to the 45th floor and got amazing views over Tokyo. Cloud was covering Mt fuji so couldn't see that. We then went to Kabukicho which is like the red-light district with lots of neon lights at night. It was daytime so pretty quiet. Our guide took us to a shop called Don Quiote which was like a very strange cross between a department store and $2 shop. You could get anything from souvenirs to Gucci handbags! After lunch we headed to the Lenovo Lab in Yokohama. The lab had fascinating tests behind top secret doors! Also a history of thinkpads ... the earliest being about 1993 and looked extremely primitive. We were all given a goodies bag. We then had some shopping time in a big mall before heading out for dinner. At night we headed back to town and crossed the Shubiya crossing - finally saw lots of people. Fun seeing all the Tokyo lights at night!Read more

    Hotel and food

    June 14, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Started the day with a buffet breakfast at the hotel. All sorts of food and some very different options. It is perfectly acceptable to roll out of bed and stroll down to the restaurant in your hotel pyjamas and slippers! For lunch we had a sit down meal in a private room. Everything beautifully presented.
Dinner was a Japanese BBQ. Apparently the meat was amazing but I had vegetarian... getting a little tired of similar flavours at each meal.
At night we went back to see the night-life at night and had some drinks in some cosy bars. Most places are quite small so a little difficult to find somewhere for a group of 13.
One of the guys was very eager to try a particularly popular ramen franchise so we agreed to try this out before catching our uber. The sign at the door said 1 hour wait but with only 14 people ahead of us we were hopeful this was wrong. 1 hour later we made it to the door! Fascinating experience with only about 12 seats inside. Everyone has their own booth and the chef pulls up a bamboo screen to take order and then closes it. You can't see their face. Peaceful music plays and you don't really talk. Mindful eating at its best. Ramen was delicious but couldn't be more different to Western fast food. Got hone at 2.30am!
The systems and technology are amazing here. Sometimes very simple such as a card at the buffet that you leave at your table while still eating and turn over when you finish. You never have to wait more than a few seconds for a lift despite being a very big hotel. Traffic flows seamlessly and despite being a very populated city nothing seems particularly busy or rushed.

    Team Lab Exhibition and Onsen

    June 14, 2023 ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We were surprised with tickets to a team lab Planet exhibition which was near our hotel. It was touted as interactive and was amazing. It included walking up a decent sized slope with water coming down from a waterfall. Crawling over a big beanbag room. A room full of strings of led lights with a path through them and mirrored floors and walls. Standing knee deep in water while music played and fish etc were projected onto the water. Lying in a giant mirrored igloo while projected flowers fell all around us. Lying on a floor while real orchids lifted and fell fron strings around us. It was a very cool experience. After this I got brave and tried the Onsen Pool. Dressed up in my pyjamas and went to the top floor. My hopes of it being discrete were very wrong and I did not find it relaxing sitting naked among other women despite the beautiful view. I did enjoy the ice block and massage chair afterwards and ended the night with free ramen dressed in my pyjamas and house slippers.Read more

    Exploring Tokyo

    June 14, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We started the day driving Karts on the roads around Central tokyo which was pretty crazy and lots of fun. Went up to speeds of about 50km all next to big trucks. We all got to choose onesies so I chose Cookie Monster. Went round quite a few sights but I mainly concentrated on following the kart in front and not getting stuck at lights! After this we went for lunch in another private room. After lunch we went to see an enormous temple which had so many people including many beautifully dressed in kimonos. After the temple we went to see the gates to the imperial palace. The grounds were beautiful but the gate was very shut! We then had a brief shopping trip in Ginza before having dinner. After dinner we were surprised with tickets to a team lab exhibition which I will post about separately.Read more

    Bullet train and Kyoto

    June 15, 2023 in Japan ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

Today we caught the bullet train to Kyoto. It travelled up to nearly 300kph but was so smooth. Tokyo train station was fascinating with heaps of shops and so many people going in all directions. The scenery was interesting- lots of rice fields and greenery but went by very fast! At Kyoto we had lunch in another nice restaurant in a big park. We then saw a bamboo forest and explored some touristy shops. After this we visited a gold leafed temple amongst some beautiful gardens. For dinner we went to a place where they taught us how to make sushi. We all graduated with certificates. We then went to our hotel - Monterey Osaka, which our guide warned us was much smaller and very old. Turned out to be full of character and beautiful with chandeliers and lovely antique furniture. I had an early night but some of the others ended up with a late night in Donsaki.Read more

    Osaka Universal Studios

    June 16, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We spent today at Universal Studios. It was a beautiful sunny day. Lots of waiting in queues but they seemed to move quickly and everything was so well organised including the way they did lockers etc. Favourite rides were The Harry Potter ride, Hollywood Dream and Spiderman. The Jaws ride was a bit of a throwback to when we went years ago and animation wasn't nearly as good ... although the Japanese guide was extremely animated as she shot at Jaws. Also went on the flying dinosaur ride which was pretty much all upside-down! After that had a drink at the Forrest gumption restaurant and then finally dinner at a hotpot place. Ended with a quick shopping trip.Read more

    Osaka Final Day

    June 17, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Our final day in Japan today. Visited Osaka Castle in the morning which was set in beautiful grounds and surrounded by a double moat. After this we were taken to the airport to fly back to Tokyo. We were lucky enough to get a clear view of Mt Fuji and a couple of volcanic islands as we flew over. Then it was a smooth transfer to our Auckland flight and an overnight flight home. Had a spare seat next to me again so enough room to spread out a bit. Watched Harry Potter on plane as the ride at Universal Studios was so interesting.Read more
