      Day out in Hobart

      January 27, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Ok, imma be honest with you. I did like nothing today.

I had no intention of doing anything so I was pleased. One of the people on my tour suggested a cafe I could go to for coffee. The coffee was cheap and fancy. A weird mix and I didnt really like it. I wont be going back there I dont think. They also didnt have wifi and I like to do work/plan while I drink my coffee.

Then I went for a bit of a walk. Wandered through the Salamanca markets and up to Battery Point where I found a little park. There seems to be lots of parks across the city, little half blocks of grass and trees.

I then wanted some food so I went and found a different cafe. Again no wifi but they had a really nice sandwich for only $9. Toasted salmon and avocado, very nice. It is also right next to my new job so will probably be going there again.

Then just went back to my hostel and needed a bit of a sleep. Didnt sleep but just relaxed. Watched some TV and made some food.

An easy end to and easy day.

      Melbourne und Ankunft in Hobart

      February 4, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

      Leaving Beautiful Point

      March 19 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

I typed this into Word each night so it was relevent to the day. I will only put up photos if the wifi can take it.

We planned to get going early and we did – Gran told me that she pulled back the blind earlier and the sky was full of stars. So, we did all the breakfast, ablutions and the van stuff and we were out of the camp by 9:30.
We had booked to see the platypuses at the zoo/aquarium at 10:00. They started with an intro and basic information and learned that they have been on this planet for 160 million years and they are very strange beasts. They are called Monotremes – and there’s a clue in the first part of that word – mono, meaning one. They have one hole and it serves many purposes, including breathing – I will leave you to imagine the other uses – the females are smaller and produce eggs that are reptilian (soft). You can look up the rest on Google.
We first went into a room with a large glass tank were there was one male and he swam about – the keeper fed it with worms and a yabbi (like a small crayfish) it scurried away for its life. With the food in the tank our platypus became very active.
We all took photos and some videos, but without a flash the shots were a bit hit and miss.
Then we went to see the females and they had access to and from smaller tanks that we could get close to.
Then we went to see the other Monotreme in the Ichida room – this had a sort of small forest and 3 Ichida’s lived there, but only 2 came out. We sat in a circle and the keeper put food in the centre. They were fun but couldn’t sit still and we left.
On the road we stopped 30 kms down the road at Exeter and had a coffee and had a plan to buy some meat to add to our veges in the fridge for dinners at Cradle Mountain but decided to try further down the line. And we didn’t get any meat so had tuna, rice and veges – pretty good dinner and icecream for afters.
Headed to Devonport (where the ferry crosses from Victoria) to try and buy some chemical toilet tablets – we did, and they cost $35 to 25 tablets – so we cut our losses and bought the liquid version for $22. Had lunch at a nearby Subway.
Then on the road south to Cradle Mountain. This was some drive passing through very rural roads, climbing up through tree forests – very narrow road, some tight bends – lots of 25km bends and a few 15km. They might be narrow, but they are all sealed and most without potholes.
Got to Cradle Mountain before 4 and found our campsite – plenty of space and right near the brand-new kitchen and ablution block – handy. We went down to the Information Centre and got our bus pass for tomorrows hikes (Sunday).
We are looking ahead at the weather, and we are likely to get some rain on Tuesday – the first rain for us since leaving Hobart.

      Port Arthur, Tasmania, AU

      February 29 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Port Arthur was a penal colony in the 1800’s. It has been preserved as a historical site.

Tasmania’s most famous convict settlement combines an idyllic coastal setting with a brutal history.

Between 1830 and 1877, about 12,500 convicts served sentences there.

We were on the first tender and as soon as we hit the ground went to a beautiful information centre, watched 6min video and then we could select a card and find a file of that prisoner.
We walked the grounds, visited prison and other buildings and came back on the ship to have lunch. At 2:00pm, back on tender and then we took 20min informative boat ride. Very pleasant. The boat ride and tours were included in admission to the port and paid by the cruise company.
Again, the weather was perfect and it was a beautiful day.

I forgot to mention…… our ship got miraculously cleaned without being cleaned and we can go to NZ waters.

      Walking tours

      January 29, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Did a cutesy little walking tour of Hobart. Met a girl on the tour who is also in my hostel so was nice talking with her.

Our guide was really nice and is thinking of going to england in a few months. She wanted to live and work in London but I may have accidentally convinced her not too. I didnt intend too but she didnt seem to mind too much. I just said there was more to see than just London.

We met at another cute park which I loved. We walked past a pretty house which does tours that show the lives of the servants in Hobart. Might do that tour later on.

We also walked past the old hospital and up to Battery Point. Saw the amazing view of Kunyani from the Battery Point road.

Then down to one of the oldest and grandest buildings in Hobart. This was built by a guy who used to run the whaling ships. From this position he could see over the entire city, river and docks. Up the top of the building he would sit in his office and watch everything that his employees were doing. Sounds kinda creepy but it was effective. It is also supposed to be haunted and they used to do ghost tours as well. So might do that at some point.

The down to Salamanca and saw the steps I had walked up yesterday. Turns out these were built by a guy who was sick of walking all around the headland and decided he would build some. He had some spare land so just built them. Love it.

We finished the tour at the parliament gardens and the boat of to Mona.

      Hobart

      March 15, 2023 in Australia

      Hobart part II

      March 9 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Our Hobart hotel is lovely. We were due to stay somewhere else, but there was a fire there before Christmas, so alternative accommodation was found for us. We’ve ended up with breakfast included, which wasn’t on our original package! Had dinner at the Hog’s Breath restaurant - we’ve been to a few in Aus - so seemed right to go here as it’s next to our hotel. No more cooking on a bbq for us!

So the news this morning said temps here would be in excess of 34 degrees. That’s hot for Tassie and for us, especially as we’ve encountered such variable temps up to now. It ramps up from low to high then down again without any warning!

We’ve been looking forward to today, as we’d arranged to meet Mel & Shaun. Mel is one of my lovely friend, Anna’s daughters. Anna isn’t here anymore but we catch up with Mel when either of us is in each other’s hemisphere!

We started by walking around Salamanca Market, Aussie’s most famous. It was fab, food, drink and nice things to buy. At the same time, HMAS Hobart has docked here, so the city was celebrating this too. There was a naval parade, and crew from the ship around town. A great vibe.

In the afternoon we’d booked to go to Mona - a completely indescribable art gallery! You get there on a party boat, and the fun continues - the installations are a mix of intriguing, controversial, beautiful, baffling, thought provoking. Brilliant.

We ended up at the oldest pub in Australia, which was mins away from our hotel. A fab day but oh boy, completely knackered from the heat and all the walking 🤪

Had a final wrangle with the packing - lets call this round a draw!

Tomorrow we’re off to NZ….. Chapter two of our trip 😁

Read more
