      Travel day to Salzburg, Austria

      It was a tough travel day today - we struggled, a lot. Our tickets were in German, struggled translating them, no one in Venice could help us read them … turned out what I thought was a 7 hr train trip, was really a 3.5 hr bus and then a 3.5 hr train. Figured that out as we were sitting at the train station. Long story short … we made it, but not without some tears and fears. But I’ll say, boy was it worth all the hassles!! The train trip, once we got on it, was MAGNIFICENT, and it’s not even the scenic trip I paid for yet. It was just a normal trip. I haven’t seen much of Salzburg yet as we got in after 7:00pm, but what we have seen is amazing. Beautiful, quiet, peaceful, awesome!

      As a side note … was it just me who had no idea Austria’s official language is German?!? I learned a lot about their history today as we traveled — especially as it relates to Germany — Sound of Music makes sooo much more sense now.      Read more

      Es geht los!
      Nach einer sehr entspannten Zugfahrt sind wir schon mittags in Salzburg angekommen und starten gleich in die erste Etappe. Heute geht es erstmal nur 8 km flach zum "Warmlaufen".
      Aber in den nächsten fünf Wochen werden wir nacheinander durch die Berchtesgadener Alpen, die Salzburger Schieferalpen, die Goldberggruppe, die Kreutzeckgruppe, die Gailtaler Alpen, den Karnischen Hauptkamm und die Julischen Alpen wandern.
      Zum Schluss geht es durch Friaul-Julisch Venetien bis an die Adria.
      Christof Herrmann teilt die Fernwanderung in 28 Etappen. Wir planen seniorengerecht mit 30 Etappen und 4 Ruhetagen :-)      Read more

      Touristenauftrieb in Salzburg

      Auf dem Rückweg übernachten wir in Lend. Davor machen wir noch eine kurze Wanderung in die nahegelegene Gasteiner Klamm und zur dazugehörigen Brücke, über die der Zug Richtung Gastein rollt. Der Weg ist teilweise mit Geröll überschüttet und es ist niemand anders unterwegs. Diese wenig spektakuläre aber dennoch reizvolle Schlucht ist offensichtlich nicht mehr von touristischem Interesse.
      Ganz anders verhält es sich mit Salzburg, das wir am nächsten Tag bei herrlichem Wetter besuchen. Hier wimmelt es ab dem späten Vormittag von Touristen. Auch wir besuchen Mozarts Geburts- und Wohnhaus, wandern auf den Festungsberg und essen Mozartkugeln.
      Die fraglos sehr schöne Stadt an der Salzach vermarktet sich und ihr berühmtestes Kind Amadeus sehr geschickt und zieht so Reisende aus aller Welt an. Nach einigen Stunden gehen wir über schöne grüne Wege zurück zu unserem Auto und fahren mit der kleinen Nachtmusik im Ohr zurück nach München.      Read more

      Salzburg, Austria

      Salzburg is known as many things. This 150,000 population city got famous as its home to white gold or salt which was very valuable at the time. Also known as Rome of the north for many of its cathedrals, architecture and beautiful churches its easy to see the slight resemblance. Salzburg overall felt like a very elegant and refined town. Home to Mozart we visited his childhood home and took in his compositions at the local museum. For fans of the movie Sound of Music many scenes were filmed in Salzburg at Mirabels Palace and in the nearby lake district. The main Salzburg Cathedral found in old town is among one of the prettiest we have seen in Europe and we enjoyed a brief organ concert while taking it in. Salzburg also has an iconic fortress, which is the largest preserved fortress in Europe sitting atop its hill overlooking the city.

      We also had the pleasure of attending an Organ Concert in Salzburg Cathedral. There is a video at the end of the post. The Church has 7 organs and while the video only shows the performance on one organ, the artist did walk down the stairs and back up to play at least 4 of the organs. We felt bad for him.       J4 - Innsbruck

      Après une bonne nuit de sommeil je me lance à la découverte de la ville d'Innsbruck. Je commence avec simplement une balade dans les rues du centre ville. Ayant faim je m'arrête acheter une pomme pour le petit déjeuner et j'en profite pour prendre un sandwich pour le midi. Le temps n'est pas très bon, le ciel est couvert et les nuages dissimulent les montagnes alentours. J'arrive tout de même parfois à deviner des sommets enneigés. Il y a des stations de ski à proximité, je vois des gens équipes de skis et snows en ville, ça me rappelle Grenoble. Les façades des maisons sont colorées et ont régulièrement des devantures irrégulières, avec parfois même des peintures ! J'ai visité deux églises (dont une que je n'ai pas pu prendre en photo), les décorations intérieures étaient impressionnantes ! Après avoir fait (au moins deux fois) le tour du centre ville j'ai pris le tram pour me rendre plus au sud de la ville. À cet endroit se trouve le tremplin de Bergisel, tremplin de saut à ski utilisé tous les ans pour la coupe du monde, et pour les JO d'hiver de 1964 et 1976. J'ai pu faire une jolie balade dans la forêt autour de ce tremplin, et l'apercevoir, (toujours de loin) sous plusieurs angles.

      Après cette étape je suis retournée chercher mon sac à l'auberge, puis direction la gare pour prendre mon train pour Salzbourg. Dans le train j'ai essayé de prévoir les jours à venir. Je suis arrivée en ville vers 17h, ce qui était agréable car souvent j'arrive dans une nouvelle ville quand il fait noir. Après m'être enregistrée à l'auberge je me suis baladée dans le centre, j'ai fait des courses et je suis rentrée. J'ai un peu discuté avec deux français de ma chambre et ensuite chill dans le lit. Mes jambes ont besoin de repos, 18,5 km de marche aujourd'hui ! J'espère passer une bonne nuit.

      La journée d'aujourd'hui a également être rythmée par des appels et des discussions, ce que j'ai trouvé agréable.

      Demain direction la Slovénie, j'ai hâte car c'est un endroit dans lequel je vais plus prendre mon temps. Ça va faire du bien de ne plus changer de ville tous les jours je pense.

      A small snippet of Salzburg

      Again we’ve been a bit slow on the posts over the last few days. Probably not a bad thing as it must mean we are busy or too relaxed haha. Salzburg was lovely and I would definitely go back there again if we ever return to Austria! Although I feel like we covered a bit of ground in the time we were there. We visited the house where Mozart was born and spent the first few years of his life (was fascinated to hear about his very talented sister who I believe was overshadowed by her brother!), went to Mirabell Gardens (a little bit more colourful in summer I assume but very pretty!). We saw a fantastic interactive exhibition about some historic musical instruments, caught the funicular up to the Fortress Hohensalzburg and then walked everywhere else we could. The NYE vibe was a bit tamer than Amsterdam 3 years ago although there were still fireworks going off everywhere. We had a great view of the festivities from one of the pedestrian bridges on the river. The weather was perfect and we felt like we had a chance to relax a bit on the last day of our stay.       A wet ride to Salzburg

      Passau to Salzburg was going to be a two day ride or one veeery long day if I went for it. It started off decently dry, but got more and more wet as I went. Wet, muddy and cold! I opted for a hotel in Salzburg, threw the (wet) towel in and hopped a train the last stretch! I spent the last day and a half hanging out in Salzburg and drying out all my equipment in the hotel. This morning I’ll be heading to an adjacent valley with a nice camp site by a little river, a sauna, pool and all the amenities! Also the salt mine tour that I want to check out is right next door! As long as I set up camp before it starts raining, let it rain! I’ve got a few hours of dry this morning, so I better start pedaling!Read more

      Früh morgens ging es Richtung Heimat. In Salzburg fanden wir einen schönen Stellplatz und wir konnten mit den Fahrrädern in die Stadt fahren. Auf Empfehlung mussten wir natürlich erstmal eine Bosna essen gehen.Read more

      Jour 3 - On arrive en Autriche !

      Nous voilà partis pour la première étape à vélo ! Objectif : atteindre Salzbourg 🇦🇹

      Nous sommes partis en train de Munich ce matin à 10h et sommes arrivés à Trostberg (🇩🇪) à 12h. Nous avons déjeuné dans un parc et fais la sieste avant de prendre la route direction Salzbourg.

      Nous avons eu la chance de rouler sous le soleil avec les Alpes comme paysage. La vue était exceptionnelle à nous en faire oublier notre fatigue. 😋

      Après 57km de vélo et 430m de dénivelé positif, nous avons franchi la frontière Autrichienne vers 18h30 !

      Ce soir nous dormons en auberge de jeunesse, nous reprenons des forces pour entamer la seconde étape à 8h demain matin !      Read more

      Salzburg!

      We spent the day on our own little “waking tour” of the city. The Sound of Music was set entirely in Salzburg, and it is also the birthplace of Mozart, so many sites revolve around those two things.

      Salzburg is SO quiet - you could hear a pin drop it’s very peaceful and nice to walk around the city.

      We eventually wandered our way into a beer garden and I finally joined Jordan in a beer - poured from a wooden barrel into rock mugs! I figured if I was going to have one, now would be the time! 😂 lolI think my last beer may have been in high school - just not a fan of the taste.      Read more
