      5. Day Nikosia (Trip to Larnaka) I

      August 29, 2022 in Cyprus ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

On day 5, we decided to take a trip to Larnaka. The city is known for its beautiful beaches. It is also home to the international airport of Cyprus. We rented a car for 4 days the morning before the trip, costing about 140 € small car segment and also had to pick it up from the airport. We had planned the trip anyway, so we could do two things in one trip.

Fun Fact: As Cyprus was a British mandate for a long time and there are still two British military bases in Cyprus, the cars drive on the left side according to the English model. Tricky, but worth the experience! ;)

So we first visited the beach and then walked through the old Turkish quarter to the Lazaruz church, which is definitely worth a visit.

Afterwards, we ate at a Lebanese snack bar not far from the church. Manakesh was not original, but the zata mixture was authentic and falafel. I am actually very sceptical about falafel that is not made in Lebanon, but these were the best I have eaten outside Lebanon so far. The restaurant was called Zatar. :)

After dinner, we walked along the Promenda and had a look at the big salt lake of Larnaka, which is not far from the airport.

But for the last 3 km we took a taxi because it was hot as hell. From the airport we were picked up by shuttle bus and driven to the car rental.

Info: You are not allowed to drive to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with a rental car. There are probably insurance problems.

Due first drive was exhausting, but I had a good co-pilot. Of course, we arrived home safely without an accident.

      6. Tag Nikosia (Vine Tour) I

      August 30, 2022 in Cyprus ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

On the 6th day of our trip, we decided to go on a wine tour through the Troodos Mountains. Theresa had researched and put together a route for us. It consisted of historical, beautiful villages and wineries with first class wine.

Our stop was Kolossi where there is a historic 13th century castle. The castle was interesting for the tour because Commandaria wine was made there.

      History:
The castle was of great strategic importance for the administration of southern Cyprus and also served as a storehouse for sugar, one of Cyprus' most important exports in the Middle Ages. The original castle was probably built in 1210 by Frankish troops. The land was given to the Knights of the Order of St John by King Hugh III. From 1306 to 1310, the Templars were the owners of the castle under the usurped rule of Amalrich, before it reverted to the Knights of St John.

During the Third Crusade, Richard the Lionheart conquered Cyprus and married Berengaria, the daughter of Sancho VI of Navarre. At the wedding, Commandaria is said to have been served and expressly pledged by Richard. After the fall of Akkos and the Johannite commandery there, the Knights of St John established a commandery (French: commanderie) in Kolossi, about 20 kilometres north of Limassol. In 1306, Kolossi Castle belonged to the Knights Templar, who established their new headquarters here, the Great Commanderie, which was later taken over by the Knights of St John after the Knights Templar were banned and dispossessed. The name of the area and the wine produced there comes from the word "commanderie".

      6. Tag Nikosia (Vine Tour) II

      August 30, 2022 in Cyprus ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Our first winery was Zambratas which is located in Agios Amvrosios. The winery was very modern and located in a picturesque setting. The wines were very good and the staff very welcoming.

We then went to Vouni, which has no wineries but produces a lot of wine. The village was very beautiful and had very narrow streets.

The most beautiful encounter was at the Atia Mayph winery. We passed there quite by chance and were welcomed by an elderly lady who owns the winery with her husband. She showed us around, explained everything and it turned out that they make the best Muscat wine for Germany, France and Cyprus and the 8th best in the world.

      August 30, 2022 in Cyprus ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The monastery church Timiou Stavrou (German: "Holy Cross"), newly built in the 19th century, is located in Omondos. Its foundation dates back to the 4th century. The interior is dominated by a magnificent gilded iconostasis from the 18th century. According to tradition, a splinter from the cross of Jesus and a skull relic of the apostle Philip are kept in the church. The monastery houses several museums: the Museum of Byzantine Art, the Museum of Folk Art and an exhibition documenting the Cypriots' struggle for freedom against the British after the Second World War until independence in 1960.Read more

      August 30, 2022 in Cyprus ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

Our last stop was Limassol. Besides many beautiful beaches, a lake and a nice city centre, the city has many good rated bars and restaurants.

Limassol is the second largest city on the island and is located on its south coast in the bay of Akrotiri north of the Akrotiri peninsula.

Limassol has undergone rapid economic development since the division of the island in 1974 and is now an important financial centre.

      7. Day Nikosia (Trip to Grine) I

      August 31, 2022 in Cyprus ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

On the 7th and penultimate day of our departure to Lebanon, we first went to the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia to learn a little more about the city. Afterwards, we decided to go to Grine (Greek: Kyrenia) to visit the city, as we had heard that it was worth a visit.

As we are not allowed to use a car in the Turkish part of Cyprus, we walked along the Ledra road to Lefkosa and from there we took a dolmus to Grine. The fare was 20 Lt. per person for a 45 min ride.

      Weiter gehts nach Zypern

      September 3, 2022 in Cyprus ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

      Kyrenia Castle

The oldest remains of the Kyrenia harbour fortress date back to the 7th century. In the 10th century the fortress was expanded by the Byzantines and at the beginning of the 12th century by the Crusaders. In 1373 it was almost completely destroyed by the Genoese. The Venetians, in conflict with the Ottomans, further extended the fortress and gave it its present appearance. The British used the castle as a prison before it became a tourist attraction from 1960.Read more

      Schildkröte voraus

      September 3, 2022 in Cyprus ⋅ 🌙 27 °C
