    Freiberg Germany

    July 19, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Today we visited the university town of Freiberg. This was a free town during the reformation period where free thinking was encouraged and those who were being persecuted for their radical views could flee to. Among them were people like Erasmus whose views were not welcomed by the Catholic church of the day. We walked around the city and noted the memorial to those many Jews who lost their lives when their synagogue was burnt down in 1938 during the period of the Nazi party rising to power. A footprint of the synagogue was made into a fountain feature to remind the city of what occurred. We shared the mandatory "long red" sausage common to the city, and lunched at a fabulous restaurant up the hill overlooking the city reached by cable car. Back home for our final night in Germany after an enjoyable few days in the scenic south west. This city was almost completely destroyed by the allied bombing during the second world war, the stained glass windows were taken out of the cathedral and there are photos of the church standing among the rubble. It's a remarkable story.Read more

Tag 3 // Hallo aus dem Funkloch

    September 5, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Wir haben das erste Mal die 1000m Höhe überquert und gönnen uns das bei Oma gerichtete Vesper. Der Platz bei Sonne und ohne Wind wäre ein Traum. So ist es nur schön ;)

Then we walked through the old town area which had as a feature the waterway. After an enjoyable couple of hours we headed to Germany to stay at or friends house from Homelink. We Reach Basel

    September 1, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

This morning the barge sailed to the small French village of Chalampe. That is where we commenced our last cycling day along the French bank of the Rhine River via Ottmarsheim and across the border to Switzerland..

Our final destination was the city of Basel, situated where the borders of Germany, France and Switzerland meet. Although the main city is in Switzerland, some of the suburbs are in France and Germany.

Basel also justifiably calls itself the “City of Gourmet” with more than 20 restaurants appointed a Gault Millau or Michelin rating.

Our view of Basel was a little jaundiced by the somewhat grubby area that the boat moored at. We found ourselves surrounded by a motley collection of old factories, overgrown paths and a rather weird circus. We never did figure out what this circus was really about as it seemed to be just a group of young dropouts having fun. It was a somewhat strange ending to the first stage of our adventure.

Tonight will be our final night aboard the MS Andante. Tomorrow we will be catching the train to Paris to begin the next part of our adventure.

    Hiking

    July 19, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

What would be a trip to the Black Forest without hiking?
Today, we hiked with my dad a nice circular route on to the top and around the Belchen, in total about 10-11 miles (~16km). So so pretty! The sky was clear enough that on the top of the mountain we were able to see some of the Austrian and Swiss Alps, as well as over to France on the other side of the Rhein River.Read more
