Inis Oirr and the Cliffs of Moher

Last night I thought it would be good to take a trip to one of the Aran Islands. I didn’t consult the weather forecast and booked a trip to the smallest island Inis Oirr and then to see the Cliffs of Moher.
I wasn’t so keen when I got to Doolin Pier. It was very cold and cloudy and looked a bit choppy.
We all sat up the top in the open and it was very cold.

It was a 30 min trip to Inis Oirr which is the closest island to Doolin. We all got off and some got on another boat to go to one of the other islands and the rest of us stayed on Inis Oirr.
To get around the island we had the choice of walking, bikes, horse and cart or private car. I chose the horse and cart.

There have been people on the islands for centuries. The island is mainly limestone which has need dig up, made into walls and the soil improved with seaweed. The pony and trap took us up to the Flossy shipwreck and back around through the narrow roads to the main settlement.
We were on the island for about 3 hours. The return trip went via the Cliffs of Moher. It was a lot rougher on the way back and I spent a lot of the trip with my eyes fixed firmly on the horizon. Once we reached the Cliffs it was a bit hard to see as everyone stood up and jostled for the best position to take photos.

After we got back to Doolin I headed to see the Cliffs from the top. They were good but I’m sure they’d be magnificent in sunlight. It was still cloudy and the rain came in. Just drizzle but it did affect visibility.

Last night I ate tea in the hotel restaurant and it was ordinary at best so I had to look for somewhere different tonight. I stopped at a pub in Lisdoonvarna. It was dark by the time I finished. It was a 45km trip that was meant to take 45 mins through narrow lanes and roads. The speed limit was generally 80 km/hr but I stuck to about 30 km/hr due to the roads and darkness. It took well over an hour to get back but I saw a rabbit, multiple frogs, a hare (I think) and two badgers. The badgers made the slow trip worth it.Baca selengkapnya

Pelancong Beautiful country. How you finding the language are they very broad. How did the leg hold up with getting up and down on the cart??

Michelle Creasy I am finding the accent quite broad, quite a few times I haven’t understood what is being said. The leg was fine as it had enough steps to get up and down.

Nach dem Frühstück hieß es leider Abschied nehmen von Killarney. Wirklich schade, denn als Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge war der Ort perfekt gewählt und das Holiday Inn absolut top. Auf dem Weg nach Galway haben auch wir Irlands meist besuchte Attraktion besichtigt. Die Cliffs of Moher sind sehr eindrucksvoll und man sollte schwindelfrei sein, wenn man einen Blick über die Klippen wagt. Diese ragen bis zu 200 Meter nahezu steil aus dem Meer. Nach einer kurzen Wanderung haben wir uns den schönsten Platz ausgesucht und ein kleines Picknick gemacht. Es war richtig warm heute, damit haben wir gar nicht gerechnet und es daher doppelt genossen. Die Ankunft in Galway und der anschließende Stadtspaziergang ließen dann Ernüchterung aufkommen. Es wirkt quasi wie ein Cooldown von all den tollen Farben und Landschaften hin zur weniger schönen (Groß)Stadt in Vorbereitung auf Berlin. Morgen früh geht's nach Dublin und nach Hause. These sea Cliffs, located on the south western edge of the Burren region in County Clare, run for 14 kilometres. At the south end they rise 129 meters above the Atlantic Ocean at Hag's Head and eight kilometres to the north they reach their maximum height of 214 meters. Their formation is believed to have take place between 313 to 326 million years ago. Today the Cliffs are subject to erosion by wave action. There are also estimated to be some 30,000 pairs of birds living on the Cliffs, including Atlantic puffins. Although we didn't see any we saw a picture telling us about them. This picturesque landscape was made complete by the abundance of native flowers, including wild poppies that adorned the area.Baca selengkapnya

Once we were settled into our room @ the Atlantic View B&B in Doolin, we decided to take advantage of the delightful day to visit the Cliffs of Moher ... just a 10-minute drive from the guest house.

Yes, it was already 6:00p, but the days are long in Ireland this time of the year. Plus, we were hoping that at that hour the tour busses would be gone ... as would most of the independent visitors. We were not disappointed. I’d be surprised if there were more than 20-30 people viewing the Cliffs and hiking the paths while we were there.

After checking out the exhibits at the Visitor Center, we headed off to see the Cliffs. The rays of the sun lit the face of the Cliffs, allowing us to see details that would have been hidden otherwise. Walking north first, we went to O’Brien’s Tower, which was built in 1835 as a lookout for visitors to enjoy the views. Alas, the tower is under restoration, so we didn’t get to climb up to the observation terrace.

Instead of continuing past the tower, we retraced our steps and headed south. The paved path eventually gave way to a dirt path that hugged the top of the cliffs. The barrier wall designed to keep visitors away from the edge disappeared as well. With nothing to stop us from tumbling down the 700-feet+ tall Cliffs, we stayed safely on the path.

We stopped frequently for photo ops ... sitting on boulders on and off to enjoy the scenery ... and the solitude. I’d resigned myself to visiting the Cliffs of Moher with people crawling all over the place, so it was especially nice to have it mostly all to ourselves.

We would like to have stayed to enjoy sunset here, but that wasn’t set to happen until after 10:00p ... too late for us after a long day of driving.Baca selengkapnya

Two to Travel The Cliffs themselves are 5 miles or so, but I think the path in total out to Hag's Head is probably longer. At the north end, there is a nearly 4-mile trail that goes all the way into Doolin as well.

Arrêt au Dunguare Castle de l'extérieur (Trop tard… fermé aux visites); Photo de groupe. Puis on repart en direction Galway on l'on va se prendre une sceaucée mémorable en arrivant au gite !!! (c'est d'ailleur la seul fois ou l'on va prendre réellement la pluie durant notre sejour). Donc pluie torrentielle et embouteillage a Galway. Sehr beeindruckend und gefährlich. 🙂
Sehr steile Klippen die bis zu 217 Meter hoch sind.
Man kann ganz nah am Abgrund entlang Spatzieren.
Ich bin sogar ganz nah dran bis Erik mich aus Angst zurück gezogen hat. 🙈
Es ist wahnsinn in diese Tiefe aufs Meer zu schauen. Ein sehr beeindruckender Ort.
Auch jst dort eine Gedenkstätten an alle Opfer die die Klippen auf sich haben, anscheinend sterben dort häufiger Menschen weil sie so nah am Abgrund stehen und die Erde nachgibt. 😞
Sehr toller Ort 😍

Weiter geht es zum Ende der Welt!
Beinahe jeder Irland-Reisende kennt die Cliffs of Moher und das zu Recht. Ein Besuch ist ein absolutes MUSS.

Bis zu 214 Meter hoch stürzen die wildromantischen Steilklippen senkrecht in den Atlantik und bieten Schwindel erregende Ausblicke. Das phantastische Fels- und Seepanorama hat eine magische Anziehungskraft. Die Kraft von Wind und Meer ist deutlich zu spüren. Die schroffen Felswände trotzen den peitschenden Wellen.

Wir trafen die Cliffs bei strahlendem Sonnenschein, dennoch ist der Wind nicht zu unterschätzen. Jährlich kommt es mehrfach zu unfreiwilligen Unfällen wie Stürzen von den Klippen. Dabei kommt es häufig vor, dass sich die Besucher nicht an die Begrenzungen halten und zu den teilweise sehr brüchigen Kanten vor robben, um einen Blick in die Tiefe zu erhaschen.Baca selengkapnya

Cliffs of Moher und Doolin

Limerick - Ennis - Doolin. Dank der Hilfe der Mädels aus dm Black Sheep Hostel in Killarney konnte ich mich am Morgen auf machen zu den Cliffs of Moher, eine Steilküste mit knapp 200 Meter aus dem Meer herausragenden Klippen. Es begrüßte mich ein zu Scherzen aufgelegter Busfahrer für die erste Etappe nach Limerick. Von dort fuhr ich über Ennis direkt zu den Cliffs. Der Plan: mit Sack und Pack an der Küste entlang und dem Pfad nach Doolin folgen, von dem mir ein Freund berichtete. Dort würde mich mein nächstes Hostel, das gemütlich anmutende Aille River Hostel Doolin, erwarten.
Das Glück der Iren schien mir auf meiner Reise zu folgen. Als "Student" zum entsprechenden Preis zahlte ich den Eintritt zum Küstenstreifen. Das sonnige Wetter folgte mir an den Klippen auf Schritt und Tritt, sodass ich mir sogar einen Sonnenbrand (in Irland!!!) zuzog. Auch die Bekanntschaft mit einem Paar aus Kanada brachte mir wieder einen persönlichen Anknüpfpunkt an den Tag. Spätesten hier, am letzten großen Vorposten zum großen Teich, legte ich all meine Sorgen ab, die mich auf meiner bisherigen Reise nur mit Rucksack und einem groben Reiseplan begleitet haben. Alles kommt nun mal, wie es kommt. Der einzige, der vorgibt wann ich wo zu sein habe, bin ich. Und trotz des immer schwerer werdenden Gepäcks waren meine Schultern leichter. Ab einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt und immer bleiähnlicheren Beinen übernahm der lustige Wahnsinn mein Gemüt. Abkühlung und Ausklang verschaffte ich mir in... drei... Pubs im verträumten Küstenort Doolin. Bei kühlem Guinness und live vorgetragener irischer Musik ließ ich meine Gedanken kreisen und freute mich bereits auf das erste mal Ausschlafen am kommenden Morgen.Baca selengkapnya

Die Cliff‘s of Moher‘ waren unser nächstes Ziel. Nachdem wir angekommen sind, wussten wir auch wo die ganzen Autos waren die auf dem Straßen gefehlt haben.

Um auf die Cliffs zu kommen ist ein ordentlicher Spaziergang bergauf nötig. Wer uns kennt und dann noch mit Motorradklamotten, der weiß das das nicht unser Ding ist 🙈😉.

Also rauf auf Motorrad und ein paar KM weiter zum ‚Doolin Port‘ und die Cliffs von der Seeseite aus angesehen. Das Boot ist so nah rangefahren, das man an den Möwen die dort Nisten die Federn zählen konnte.

Ein Wahnsinn. Traumhaft schön. Und als dann noch die Sonne raus kam... unbeschreiblich.

Das ganze war ein 2 Stunden Bootsttripp inkl. einem Hafenbesuch der Insel Oirr. Im Hafen tummelte sich dann auch ein Delphin der mit badenden Kinder spielte. War richtig schön zuzusehen
