Today we got up and headed to the famed Rialto fish market to buy fish. We picked out some random salmon-red fish, a silver one and some bright red shrimp. The fish are whole, but the dudes who work at the stall will clean them for you. Next we picked up some cheese, salami, San Daniel ham, bread, and fruits and vegetables. And a giant watermelon. I think it weighed about fifteen pounds. I got to practice a farmer’s carry to get it back to the apartment while Michael pack-muled the rest. Mom and Annika we left at a cafe to spare them the sweaty twenty minute round trip and the mega staircase up and down from the apartment.
Then we headed to San Marco. We remembered not to go through the columns because it is bad luck (so we were told) and since we were a little early for our timed tickets to the Basilica we headed to the corner of the square where there’s this tummy you rub for luck.
Glad for the timed tickets. The line was long. Even better, when you pay the seven euros for the museum part we found out a few amazing things. 1) there is a free clean bathroom. 2) there is a coffee machine with cheap coffee (Michael and I share an unnatural love of coffee machines. It might be why we got married.) 3) around another corner there is a machine with cheap, cold, sparkling water and some juice Annika ended up liking. Considering there are no bathrooms around the Piazza and the area around it is basically a tourist hell hole full of crap shops and over-priced crap food, this discovery felt like the biggest hack of all time. And the museum was air conditioned and full of interesting things that even held a six year old’s attention!! The old robes covered in Burano lace were worth the price alone. And 4) you get access to the balcony overlooking the Piazza. We left Papa up there so the three of us could head back out. Then he made some “Where’s Waldo” style photos of Annika in the Piazza. If you try hard you might see Michael in the picture I made looking back at St. Mark’s.
Later back at the apartment we cooked up our fish. So good!!Read more
