      This morning began with a cappuccino and some pastries before we got lost in the narrow streets of Venice.

      There was a marathon underway which congested much of the busy areas including St. Mark's Square and most of the main walkways, but we had fun walking beside the barriers for almost an hour watching the world go by.

      We ended up at a very cool bookshop where we had the chance to sit in a Gondala - this was nice because we decided against doing a Gondala tour as it was going to be 150/200aud and we'd have to share with 3 other people.

      After a while we headed back to the accommodation and undertook some more booking for future travels, trying to keep minimum 2 weeks ahead.

      We went for another afternoon walk, this time towards the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and we made our way back following the 'coast'

      Dinner was another serving of pasta, which I'm a fan of, before an early night.

      Ciao Bella -Exploring Venice!

      Venice has been amazing. We rented an apartment for the week and it’s been so nice to have our own rooms, make delicious Italian coffee in the morning, having an actual refrigerator requiring us going to a local grocery store, hang laundry to dry outside our window on the 2nd floor, walking along the myriad of canals and seeing 100s of gelaterias (we have tried many so far! - Suso is my favorite!!).

      I have been so excited to be back here - last time I was here was during my junior year abroad in Switzerland. Late 90s had felt unreal to me - we would “ditch” school to hop on an overnight train to have an extra day in Italy over a weekend. Let’s just say it’s been awhile - and a lot has changed. A lot more people everywhere…a lot more shops…a lot more gondolas - but still the same allure…

      …The same wonder hearing people speak in Italian with such an expressiveness in their hands and faces…

      …The deliciousness of the pizzas (definitely the most delicious crusts I’ve get had) and they are the cheapest thing on the menu usually!!!

      …The creaminess and delicious flavors of gelato!

      …The feeling of not knowing what you will see as you cross over yet another small bridge over a lovely small canal and turn the corner…

      …the feeling of questioning your mothering skills when the girls say they know how to get home from the grocery store…and letting them go alone(!). (Then realizing they got back to the apartment way more easily than I did!!)

      …and getting a much needed haircut felt good too!

      We’ve been here almost one week already - I can’t believe it. Time is going by so fast …and we are coming home in 2 1/2 weeks.

      We’re going to watch the 90s version of Romeo and Juliet tonight (which I’ve never seen) and hop on a train tomorrow morning to visit fair Verona for a day.

      On Tuesday AM, we’ll then take a 4 am water taxi and then Flight to Munich. We’ll be there for a week and Maddie will take her long awaited German lessons (she LOVES the German language!).

      We’ll also begin studying a bit of a world War 2 for the last couple of weeks we are here, including reading the Diary of Anne Frank and visiting some WWII sites along the way.

      Dnesny den bol vcelku adrenalinovy, ale nebudem predbiehat. Zacalo to “rannym” vstavanim a vyrazenim na vylet lodou do Benatok. Rychla zastavka v miestnej pekarni a hajde na MHD (k lodi pesi cca 50 min a busom 7 min - takze radsej sme o pol hodku dlhsie spali). Napriek priprave a zisteniu, ze by to malo chodit kazdych 10 min, tak bus isiel az 9:13 … lod nam odchadzala o 9:30 ;) Podarilo sa aj listok kupit cez apku … ale jeden za 10 euri - doteraz nevieme, ci je to normal cena, alebo kde sa stala chyba (update: apka nam predala listky az na letisko Marco Polo, inak je cena 1,30€!!! - skumal som appku a je to zjavne jej chyba / umysel, poslal som reklamaciu, tak uvidime, ale moc si od toho neslubujem). Nakoniec sme sa vsak stastlivo vcas nalodili - lod odplavala aj tak az o 9:43 samozrejme, vsak sme v Taliansku. Po hodke a pol sme dorazili do Benatok, priamo kusok od Piazza San Marco. Dali sme gelato a preskumali Benatky z vysky veze Campanile di San Marco bell. Rychle obcerstvenie, Canal Grande, Ponte di Rialto a potulky okolim. Cas ubehol strasne rychlo, a tak sme na velke sklamanie pani M nestihli prehliadku Palazzo Ducale (Dozovho palaca) a valili sme na nasu spiatocnu lod o 17:30 … stale vsak bolo dost casu, tak sme este cestou vychutnali vyborne Chianti v lokalnej stylovej vinarnicke. 17:30 lod … to sme si aspon mysleli, ale ked som ju o 17:02 videl otacat sa v pristave a plavat smerom prec, ponali sme nejasne podozrenie, ze nieco nie je v poriadku. Skusal som na nu este mavat (ludi na lodi to dost pobavilo). Ani telefonat do prepravnej spolocnosti neprimal kapitana lod otocit a tak sme ostali v Benatkach. Oficialny cas odplavania lode bol totiz 17:00!! Doteraz netusime, kde a ako sme my dosli k 17:30 … a este odisla nacas (v Taliansku!!!). No panika a long story short … mali sme obrovske stastie, ze bol stvrtok a teda jediny den, ked dana spolocnost robi aj nocny vylet do Benatok a tak nam slubili, ze nas zoberu nazad o 21:30. Pani M tomu aj tak uplne neverila a uz si vyberala most, pod ktorym prespime ;) Vdaka tomu sme vsak stihli aj prehliadku Palazzo Ducale, paradnu veceru v Benatkach a pani M ako bolestne je obohatena o 2 siat a jednu bluzku ;) Veceru sme dali v Osteria Doge Morosini (https://goo.gl/maps/X14Sa25tiKaiN9Uf9), kde som sa ja doplazil uplne vyprahnuty a tak som ocenil ich litrove capovane pivo. Dali sme bruschettu, tuniakovy tataracik a ako hlavne jedlo cerstvu rybu dna (uz neviem aky presne druh). Konecne vyborne jedlo!!! Pochutili sme si. Pani M uz ale bola nervozna a tak sme s velkym predstihom dorazili do pristavu a sadli do baru s priamym vyhladom na nase molo. Lod samozrejme dosla na ine molo, ale my uz sme sledovali vsetky ;) A tak uz pol hodiny pred vyplavanim sme sedeli na lodi. Nakoniec teda vsetko super a v podstate sme hackli system, lebo sme si predlzili pobyt v Benatkach (a este za menej penazi, kedze nocna plavba je drahsia). Cesta presla OK a stastlivo sme okolo jedenastej v noci priplavali do Chiogga. Tu nam o 2 min usiel bus k nasmu ubytku a tak sme si este vychutnali nocnu 50 minutovu prechadzku. Ja som si este na teraske doma dal pohar vina, pani M vsak hned po sprche unavena zaspala ako drevo (sa ani nedivim, nabehali sme 17,5km). To bol den! Uz sa tesim na lenosenie na plazi.Read more

      Auf gehts nach Venedig

      Wegen des Generalstreiks in Frankreich nimmt unsere Reise eine andere Wendung als noch vor einer Woche gedacht. Anstatt durch Frankreich und Spanien nach Portugal zu fahren, führt unsere Route nun durch Österreich bis in den Süden Italiens nach Sizilien und zurück durch die Schweiz. Und wenn wir Glück haben, können wir am Ende unserer Reise doch noch nach Paris fahren.

      Jetzt sind wir, nach einer langen aber wunderschönen Zugfahrt, endlich in Venedig angekommen. Zu unserer Ferienwohnung haben wir einen abendlichen Spaziergang gemacht und teile Venedigs noch in Weihnachtsbeleuchtung bewundert können.       Venedig 🏘

      Nach einer langen Fahrt sind wir in Venedig angekommen. Wir haben auf einem Campingplatz geschlafen und sind mit der Fähre für 13€ hin und zurück gefahren. Nach einer 20 Minuten Fahrt sind wir dort angekommen. Wir sind ein bisschen in den Gassen herum gelaufen und haben einen Mann gesehen, der auf Gläsern Musik gespielt hat. Wirklich beeindruckend! ☺️ nachdem wir zu dem bekanntesten Platz dort gehen wollten und unendlich viele Menschen gesehen haben, haben wir herausgefunden, dass in Venedig ein großer Feiertag/ ein Lichterfest an dem Tag war. Dementsprechend war die ganze Stadt dort versammelt. An einem Stand haben wir typisch Venezianische Spezialitäten gegessen. Eine Krokette mit Nudeln, Spinat und Mozzarella und ein Hefeteigfladen mit Zimt und Zucker. Sehr lecker.

      Mir hat es dort sehr gut gefallen! Gerne würde ich noch einmal her kommen, mit mehr Zeit. Da die Fähre um 18:30 Uhr das letzte mal zurück gefahren ist hatten wir nur 3 Stunden Zeit. Zum Abschluss haben wir an dem Ufer noch einen Aperol getrunken.

      Wieder auf dem Campingplatz angekommen, haben wir weitere 3 Aperol getrunken. Dadurch dass sie so groß waren, waren es eigentlich 8 Stück. Wir waren ziemlich betrunken 😂 wir haben dort auch bemerkt, dass unser Strom nicht mehr funktioniert 😬      Read more

      Der Markusplatz ist ein begehbares Wunder. Er zählt zu den schönsten Plätzen der Welt und das zurecht. Den Platz beherrscht ohne Zweifel der Markusdom, mit seiner prächtigen Fassade, den mosaikverzierten Bögen und seinen fünf Kuppeln.

      Venice

      Leisurely start to the day (not sure how I am going to go back to 5.15am starts when I get back to Australia - positively uncivilised!), and then we started an epic day of leisurely meandering through the streets of Venice. Love love love!

      We didn't go into anything or line up for anything and just enjoyed a day of looking at the sights of Venice from the outside. Fabulous bridges, Venezian-style traffic jams, heard opera being sung on a gondola, marvelled at why the gondoliers thought being grumpy and disinterested in what they were doing was good for business etc.

      We looked in on some amazing art shops, and got a bit of inspiration for a few things we might try out when we get home. Kate has been collecting the entry and bus tickets throughout our journey to "do something" with them when we get home. We were inspired by some great papier mache works in one gallery today so spent this evening researching some options to give it a go when we get home. It has been four weeks since we have watched a TV (given we can't understand anything, we have gotten used to just not turning them on even when we have had them) which has been great for playing games and chatting about stuff. Each accommodation generally has a selection of games - tonight Finn and I played backgammon which used to be one of my favourite board games when I was at uni and living with my uncle who was a board game fiend.

      We got back to our accommodation around 4pm due to the urgent need to find a loo and a distinct lack of public facilities in Venice. So, had a sleep, read some book, dinner last night was so yummy Craig made the same again. All up, a perfect day!      Read more

      Letzte Station Venedig

      Die letzte Woche vor unserer Überfaht nach Italien verbringen wir am Elia Beach. 
      Das Wetter war zwar nicht berauschend, aber wir hatten noch schöne Tage.
      Bei ruhiger See schipperten wir von Patras nach Venedig, Pech hatten wir mit der Kabine, sie war in der Nähe vom Maschinenraum.
      In Venedig steuerten wir den Stellplatz in Mestre an, kurz frühstücken und ab zur Stadtbesichtigung. 
      Wenig Touristen sind unterwegs und so können wir entspannt 5 Stunden durch die Stadt rennen.
      Morgen geht es Richtung Bayern , die 4 Monate sind Rucki Zucki vergangen.
      Das war auch der letzte Bericht für diese Reise.      Read more
