      San Felipe

      Da am Abend bzw am Vormittag niemand vorbeikommt und Geld für die Nacht am Campingplatz von uns haben möchte und auch wir niemanden finden konnten, der hier zuständig ist, zahlen wir nichts für die Nacht am Campingplatz, juhu! 20 Euro gespart! 😃😍
      Heute wollen wir an die Ostküste der Baja California fahren, weil es dort wärmer sein soll als an der Westküste. Über das hügelige Landesinnere fahren wir nach San Felipe. Die Straße ist in einem sehr guten Zustand, sogar besser als so manche Straße in Alaska oder Kanada. Je weiter wir an die Ostseite kommen, umso mehr Kakteen säumen die Straße. Viel Verkehr ist nicht und wir kommen ganz gut voran. Plötzlich ist eine Militärkontrolle. Das kommt hier öfter vor, aber dies ist unsere erste Kontrolle dieser Art hier in Mexiko. Wir werden nett begrüßt und werden auf Spanisch gefragt wo wir hinfahren. Das verstehe ich zum Glück und kann schnell eine Antwort geben. Das war’s auch schon und wir dürfen weiter fahren. Kurz vor San Felipe dann die nächste Kontrolle. Dieses Mal müssen wir die Seitentüre öffnen und der Soldat steigt mit seinen dreckigen Stiefeln hinein und schaut sich alles an und macht jede zweite Lade auf. Danach dürfen wir wieder weiterfahren. In San Felipe angekommen, fahren wir direkt zum Campingplatz. Für diesen einfachen Platz direkt am Strand zahlen wir 23 Dollar, etwas angenehmere Preise als noch vor ein paar Wochen in Kalifornien. 😃
      Zu Fuß geht man von hier etwa 10 Minuten ins Zentrum. Heute ist ein großes Fest. Das Shrimp Festival. Dieses besuchen wir am Abend. Es ist wie ein kleines Volksfest. Es gibt ein paar Vergnügungsfahrgeschäfte, Essenstände und Getränkestände. Wir probieren ein paar Tacos und endlich die bekannten Churros. Nach einem Pina Colada und einem Bier fallen wir müde und überfressen ist Bett. Mexiko ist echt cool! 🍺🍀      Read more

      Sommer, Sonne, Kaktus and much headwinds

      We got up early in order to avoid the heat and get a long stretch done today. We hoped for tailwinds of course. However, reality was different and we had to fight pretty strong headwinds all day. The route wasn't too bad: high plains, some mountains around, a canyon, many cactuses. The area here is VERY dry. You don't find any water except for bottled water in the minimarkets. Therefore, we have to plan days like today carefully, so we always have enough to drink.
      Despite the headwinds, we cycled 162km to a campground on the East side of Baja where we could pitch our tent right at the beach.      Read more

      Day 7

      Wir starten nun endlich

      January 9 in Mexico ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

      Nach ein paar wundervollen Tagen auf dem Campo Mosqueda ging es für uns nochmal kurz zurück mach Mexicali um dort einzukaufen, Wasser nachzufüllen (50 Liter für 45 Pesos) und um eine Sim Karte samt Handy zu kaufen.

      Danach ging es die 40 Richtung Golfo de Santa Clara weiter.

      Kurz nach der Ortschaft haben wir einen super Platz gefunden und können die Bucht am Golf von Californien überblicken, an der Stelle in der der Colorado River mündet.

      Es ist ein offizieller Stell-/Picknick Platz.

      Von hier aus können wir auch Delphine im wasser sehen.

      Auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite ist die Baja Californien, die wir nicht anfahren werden.

      Heute hat auch unser Spanischkrus begonnen.
      Und, das ist richtig schräg:
      zwei Deutsche, wohnhaft in Schweden, bereisen gerade México und werden von einem gebürtigen Mexikaner online unterrichtet, der 10 Jahre in Deutschland gelebt hat und der Liebe wegen nun in Vietnam sitz.

      Damit wir uns Online verabreden können, haben wir die deutsche Zeit als Referenzzeit genommen.

      Den Alejandro ist uns 14 Stunden voraus. Verrückt. Es mach jedoch viel Spaß.

      Border Wars

      TRUMP FOR 2020... Build the wall!

      Today along the Mexican border we ran into a couple who come down from Maine every year as volunteers in the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, the reason are: A: In Maine, in winter it gets to 30 below. B: They care about the place.
      It was a bizarre scene. First we saw neatly bagged piles of rubbish in the middle of nowhere then we came across them with those stick-claw things wandering all over the place picking stuff up.

      If you go through any official entry port into the United States the security is insane, many razor wire manufacturers have built their fortunes on America’s border control paranoia yet get away from those points and the fencing is woeful or non existent.

      Right up against, like touching the actual border line with no barriers are Mexican houses that run drugs or just enjoy throwing all their shit over to the American side, this then blows all over the country and that is what the couple we met were doing, picking it up.

      The border is so easy to cross, every night they bring drugs across from Mexico, sometimes leaving them close by or up to 5 miles inland. Then they take a GPS readings, give those coordinates to people in someplace like Phoenix so they can come down and locate the stuff.

      Everyday this couple, along with the rubbish they collect uncover drugs. Today the showed us cocaine and marijuana they discovered, the place is lousy with it, it’s like a shotgun approach, keep throwing enough rocks and eventually you’ll hit something or in this case get some drugs through.
      For the people around the border it isn’t about stopping improvised people seeking a better life, it’s about the drugs, the crime coming over and the trashing of the place so now many that were once against building the wall seem all for it.

      Building Trump’s Wall they haven’t logically started at one end and headed for the other, they’re hitting hot spots and this is one of them though it’s Monty Pythonesque in a way because alongside a known drug runners house with no other new wall construction either side for hundreds of miles they’re erected a piece of Trump Wall.
      You can imagine their reaction...“oh Pancho! what weez do with all our drugs now? zee Americanos build zee big wall in our backyard, weezs dumb Mexicans too lazy and stupid to walk next door”      Read more

      Day 34

      Mexico, Arizona and the Sonoran Desert

      There is only so much cheap Tequila you can drink, Mexican drug smugglers you can handle or how much more can you take of hearing everyone’s opinion on Trump’s Wall so to get away from it all the best thing to do is head out into the desert... where they’re smuggling drugs and building walls.
      At least there is no Tequila out here so we’ll be sober enough to appreciate all the pretty stuff.

      The quietness is deafening till the noise really is deafening from low flying fighter jets that are based just over the next hill or somewhere, we’re not sure but it can’t be too far away America doesn’t have cat swinging room from one military base to the next and with their history the next conflict won’t be too far off so they’re probably just making sure they’re match fit for the main game.

      They gave it a rest during the day so we had a chance to really appreciate the Sonoran Desert in all its quietness and isolation and as it is with these sorts of places that are so incredible it’s pointless trying to describe them.
      The nights in the desert are just as good, you sit outside with the stars, warm breezes blowing and nights sounds all around.
      Then night sounds above!
      It’s like rolling thunder, they just keep coming, no wonder they gave it a rest during the day, the US Air Force are now on night manoeuvres.
      You can see why people in war zones get so traumatised. First there is this distant rumble then the sound increases and as they go over the top of you the noise vibrates your bones.

      Just as well they aren’t bombing as well or are they?
      How far have we driven into the desert?
      We drove past a sign the other day saying WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, we try and blame one another for driving back into that area, Rhonda wins.
      For a while this was a very peaceful and beautiful place, one of the best, now we’re cowering under the RV with s couple of saucepans over our heads.

      EPILOGUE:
      They’ve gone, it’s quiet again, the warm breeze has returned along with the night sounds of all the desert critters. We sit back by the fire reaching for that nonexistent bottle of Tequila, that’s a shame the Margarita glasses were primed with plenty of salt but a cup of tea in this setting tastes just as good.       ¡Hola!
      Was waren wir heute morgen noch aufgeregt und dabei ging alles sehr freundlich und zügig zu.

      An der Grenze in San Luis angekommen, durften wir mit Willi nach der Einreise nach Mexiko auf einen Parkplatz zur Kontrolle halten.

      Die beiden Officer waren sehr freundlich und in einem Mix aus spanisch und englisch haben wir uns verständigt.
      Einer der beiden hat kurz den Willi von innen begutachtet, alle Schränke geöffnet und immer genickt. 3 Minuten später war er wieder draußen und gab uns sein ok.
      Keine Frage, was wir an Lebensmitteln dabei haben und das bisschen Obst und Gemüse hat auch nicht interessiert.

      Dann ging es zum SAT Office, um das Visa und das TIP (temporäres Importticket für Willi) zu bekommen.

      Auch hier waren die Beamten - sind es überhaupt welche - na ihr wisst schon, die waren jedenfalls super nett und hilfsbereit.

      Nun haben 180 Tage lang Zeit, das Land zu erkunden. Willi hat mit dem TIP 10 Jahre Aufenthaltsgenehmigung bekommen 😀.

      Alles in allem waren wir nach einer Stunde am Grenzübergang fertig.

      Die Kosten für das Visa liegen pro Person bei 717 Pesos (ca. 39€), das für das TIP für Willi bei 986 Pesos (ca. 53€). Eine Kaution ist für Willi nicht notwendig.

      Also ab auf die mexikanischen Straßen.

      Erster Stopp ist ein Campingplatz am Colorado River nahe des Biosphärenreservates des oberen Golfes von Californien.

      Auch hier wurden wir wieder super nett empfangen. Wir werden hier erst einmal ein paar Tage bleiben.

      Baja California

      Wir haben die letzte Nacht in den USA bei Randy in San Diego verbracht. So konnten wir am nächsten Tag schon früh an der Grenze sein. Wir haben eine kleine Grenze gewählt und es war zum Glück auch nicht viel los.
      Die Einreise für uns war auch unproblematisch. Als wir uns dann aber das temporary import permit für die Motorräder ausstellen lassen wollten, gab es Probleme. Die Dame am Schalter wollte es uns nicht ausstellen. Daraufhin sind wir fußläufig nach Tijuana eingereist und haben es uns dort in der Stadt ausstellen lassen. Mussten danach aber wieder zu unseren Motorrädern an der Grenze. Das hieß für uns: wieder in die USA einreisen und anschließend wieder nach Mexiko einreisen. Zum Glück waren alle sehr entspannt und hilfsbereit. Ansonsten hätte das Vorhaben sicherlich mehrere Stunden gedauert.
      Anschließend sind wir wiedervereinigt und glücklich zu einem Campingplatz am Meer gefahren.
      Die nächsten Tage ging es dann für uns durch Wüsten- und Kakteenlandschaften immer weiter in Richtung Süden. Haben das erste Mal "real mexican food" probiert, mitten in der Wüste gecampt und erlebt, wie manche Mexikaner Auto fahren😱.      Read more

      Baja Mitte

      Stück für Stück arbeiten wir uns entlang der fast 2.000 km langen Baja. Immer von Kite oder Wing Spot zu Surfspot im Zickzackkurs von Ost nach West meist komplett ohne Handyempfang.
      Einen heiß ersehnten Spot mussten wir leider auch links liegen lassen, weil der sogenannte Highway dorthin auf einmal zu einer 90km langen Buckelpiste wurde.
      Dafür wurden wir aber andererseits auch mit ein paar Tagen perfekt laufenden Wellen nahezu für uns alleine belohnt 😍      Read more

      Abschied von Bahia de los Angeles

      Am 13.12. haben wir von Bahia de Los Angeles Abschied genommen, nachdem wir auf dem Nachbar Campground unsere Tanks „entleert“ haben und im Dorf nochmal 270 Liter Trinkwasser in der Mission nach gefüllt haben. Die Fahrt war kurz, denn wir sind erst spät losgefahren. Und so haben wir nach 72 km Stopp gemacht, nachdem wir wieder eine beeindruckende Fahrt (fast ganz alleine auf der Strecke) durch die Kakteen 🌵 Mondlandschaft genossen haben.
      Hinter dem Rasthof haben wir sicher zwischen LKW‘s und Trailern gestanden.
      Eine Vielzahl an Hunden hat uns bewacht.      Read more
