      Day 91, Big Wave Nazare

      Because of my love of (watching) surfing, I’ve been very interested to visit Nazare. Nazare was a pretty typical beach and fishing town until a local businessman had the vision to promote its huge winter waves to ‘big wave’ surfers and thus extend the tourist season long past August. In prior years, locals only saw the waves as the fishermen’s torment and, at first, the vision was met with lots of local skepticism. Also surfers he approached asked, “How was it possible that there were waves that big and nobody knew?” But his persistence, the enormity of the waves, and a Netflix documentary, all came together to make his vision reality. Now September through April, especially December, can be just as crowded as summer and Nazare is known all over the world. 🌊 No surfers today. But it was really fun to be there in person and picture the sometimes 100 foot waves.Read more

      Day 92, Lisbon Xenia’s Way

      Our day in Lisbon was spent with a super nice tour group (Swiss, Canadian, US) and a spunky and vivacious guide with unending curiosity named Xenia. Xenia took us on an unconventional tour, going down narrow and non touristy streets and introducing us to lots of her friends (and stopping to serve us cake, wine, and Ginja - a cherry liqueur). We loved it! Hope says the tour was, “Humorous, yet extremely educational, showing me a real side of Lisbon I never would have found on my own.” What a great day. Thanks Xenia!!😘Read more

      Hophop auf die Insel

      Wiedermal ein Morgen der für unseren Geschmack etwas zu Früh startet. Aber was soll‘s, raus aus den Federn, denn heute geht es auf die Insel!

      5 Tage #LeBen auf Santa Maria, die Insel der Azoren, die von den Portugiesen als erste besiedelt wurde.

      Verabschiedet von Lissabon, sitzen wir also in kürzester Zeit wieder im Flieger. Jetzt über dem Atlantik. Von hier oben sieht er so ruhig aus. Ob das überhaupt das Meer ist und nicht nur eine dicke Wolkendecke? Aber die kleinen Schäfchenwölkchen werfen ihr zarten Schatten auf das Wasser - es wirkt alles ganz friedlich. Wir landen dennoch holprig.

      Nachdem das mit dem Taxi hier schon ein wenig anders lustig ablief, machen wir uns frisch und auf Nahrungssuche - Leonie hat Hunger…
      Nicht von Vorteil, wenn wir dann doch erst in die entgegengesetzte Richtung laufen, auch wenn die Aussicht super schön ist!

      An dem brasilianische Restaurant, bei dem Benjamin „wenn es geil aussieht“ sofort gerne was schnabbulieren würde, laufen wir schnurstracks dran vorbei - so geil sieht es aus. Finden dann aber eine süße urige Snackbar, wo es selbstgebrautes Bier, selbstgemachte Burger, Pita und Crepes gibt - empfehlenswert lecker!
      Was es wohl damit auf sich hat, dass „Muskat“ „Kümmel“ und „Salz“ an der Wand stehen und ein paar Brezeln von der Decke hängen?

      Im Hotel zockt Benjamin Leonie in der ersten Urlaubsrunde Phase 10 souverän ab! Zu Leonies Verteidigung: der Blick raus ins Grüne und auf den Atlantik und so einen attraktiven Gegenspieler vor der Kulisse, können schon mal ablenken!      Read more

      1. STOP LISSABON - One Night in Lissabon

      Bevor es SAMSTAG ans Meer gehen soll, ging es Freitag erst einmal mal für ca 20h nach Lissabon…

      Gehört hab ich schon viel von der Stadt und die Zeit war knapp…
      Aber neben der Stadt war ein besonderes Highlight meine liebe Reisefreundin Tina wieder zu treffen. Sie war eine der Mädels, die mit mir im März auf Koh Tao meinen Geburtstag gefeiert haben und die mit mir am Ende auf der Insel versackt ist… ☺️

      Sie hat nun genau die Hälfte ihres Sabbat Jahres um und das Schicksal wollte, dass wir uns ausgerechnet in Lissabon wiederfinden…

      17:30 gelandet und 19:00 endlich im Hostel angekommen starteten wir in die Nacht…

      Das Szeneviertel in der Altstadt hatte viel zu bieten… aber auch hier wollte das Schicksal dass wir in einer Bar landeten, die geschmückt mit hunderten BHs war, aus der bezaubernder Livemusik klang (schon mal Lionel Richie Lieder in ner Bar gehört?) und den besten Sangria servierte … wir gaben all den anderen Bars zwar eine Chance doch mussten feststellen, dass die BH Bar… (oder auch ARROZ DOCE BAR) einfach die Beste war - Nicht zu voll nicht zu leer, mit einer überragenden ZumbaPlaylist und nem französischen Junggesellenabschied in dem Laurent und herrlich ins Tanzgeschehen einband… 😌

      Der Sangria floss, die leckeren MilchreisMitZimtShots schmeckten, der Po wackelte, die Augen glitzerten und unsere Herzen hüpften - der Muskelkater im Hinter am nächsten Tag erinnerte uns daran, dass wir scheinbar auch Twerken trainiert (TRAINIERT! ☝🏻) haben. 😂

      Ok in eine kleine Bar (Club da Escina) war ich dann doch auch noch verliebt - sie hatte nicht hunderte BHs sondern vielmehr hunderte Flamingos und Diskokugeln… ich war verzückt… später stellte sich (für mich überraschend) heraus dass das wohl eine 🌈BAR war… ja, kann sein dass meine Reisebuddies mich erst im Nachhinein darauf aufmerksam gemacht haben, weil ich es selber ni gecheckt hatte… und ständig schwärmte… damit erklärt sich auch meine sofortige instinktive Sympathie für diesen Ort … die 🌈 Community und ich wir haben einfach den gleichen Geschmack 🦩 😌      Read more

      Lisbon by Foot

      We arrived in Lisbon yesterday at 3pm after leaving San Francisco at 3pm on Wednesday. 24 hours of travel and a wild cab ride to our hotel left us a bit spent. Once we got to the hotel we thought “let’s take a nap and then head to dinner". Well guess what? Our nap lasted till 7am. 😂

      Off we went this morning, after a great hotel breakfast, for a hike around Lisbon. What a great walking city Lisbon is. The mosaic tiled sidewalks are not easy on the feet but very impressive to look at. We made an unexpected stop and bought tickets to walk through the botanical gardens located in the middle of town which was a real highlight.

      Lisbon has a feel of San Francisco. It sits on a bay with lots of tourists and even a replica of the Golden Gate bridge that spans the harbor. As the afternoon grew warmer, and we had logged about 8.6 miles, we headed back to the hotel to put our feet up. Tomorrow will probably be a Hop On-Hop Off bus tour day (heavy on the “On”, light on the “Off”) as there is so much more to see.      Read more

      Fly Away - Tones And I

      Today was quite the travel day! Our morning was filled with a quick breakfast and for Mom and I lots of last-minute packing. We double checked everything and said a heartfelt goodbye to Dad. The three of us left at 1, Dad to lunch with a colleague and the two of us to the airport. We walked to a Dublin Airport Bus stop but didn’t have much luck. So, we walked a few blocks down to a different stop and ironically saw our original stop’s bus go by. After approximately an hour and a half, we made it to the terminal. Security was easy peasy and we had a nice meal before boarding. Our flight took off before 6 and we had very smooth sailing until landing in Lisbon just past 8. We caught the Metro to our flat where we had a lovely chat with Dad’s fam and ate some pizza.Read more

      She Sets The City On Fire - Gavin DeGraw

      Today was a lovely day full of touring in Lisbon! We all woke up and had a light breakfast before heading to the Rossio train station to meet our lovely tour guide, Ricardo. We took taxis to the church/monastery and decided not to wait in the queue, but move to another line for a bakery. After having Portugal’s iconic mini custard cream pies, we went to the Botanical Gardens and explored for a while. From there, we walked to the coast to see the replica Golden Gate and a memorial statue for the famous Portuguese explorers. After a stop at another famous riverside monument, we took the Metro to the Time Out Market where we all had a late lunch. A few hours later we were back to Rossio Square, taking another train line home. Our evening was quiet and we had some charcuterie for dinner.Read more

      Day 31

      North to Lisbon

      We caught a taxi to the airport this morning for our 1.5 hour flight to Lisbon.

      We caught the underground from the airport to our hotel, changing lines mid journey... and a surprisingly good price for an airport train - $2.66 each.

      Our hotel is in a mostly pedestrian area in the centre of town, with trams trundling along many streets and a buzzing outdoor dining and cafe scene.

      We bought a local SIM card and had a walk around the local area, picking up a few caches on the way.

      Bek and Jake arrived late afternoon and we found an outdoor dining area near one of the main squares for dinner.      Read more

      Being a Tourist in Lisboa

      Hola from Lisboa! Before I start walking the Caminho Portuguese, I’ve been playing tourist. What a busy city. Locals are very friendly. Getting around I’ve mainly relied on my two feet, but have used the metro/buses, which is very easy to use. A lot of hills. All sidewalks are cobblestone, plus most of the older streets. Have not seen anyone wearing high heels!

      Instead of going into all that I’ve seen I’ll touch on highlights. Checkout the Sandemans New Europe www.newEuropetours.eu they have free walking tours not only in Lisbon. The guide Bruno was excellent. You should put seeing a Fado show on your list. I did a simple ‘Get Your Guide’, 50 minute program with two singers & 2 guitarists. Simple but excellent.

      Not sure how many photos I’ve taken, but those I’ve attached have captions to give more info.

      Tomorrow, Saturday, I start walking. Thursday I did 10km/6.2 miles of the route, so I’m not starting out with a 32.7km day. Late morning I will take the metro to the point I stopped on Thursday.
