      Von airexe nach melide.

      Guten Abend, mal ganz auf Deutsch. Also, heute war auf dem Weg von airexe nach melide den ganzen Tag strahlender Sonnenschein angesagt. Zum Nachmittag hin wurde es ziemlich warm aber der Weg war überwiegend von Bäumen bestückt, so dass man überwiegend im Schatten gehen konnte. Man trifft so allerhand Menschen auf dem camino und heute begegnete ich einen jungen Mann, der nach seiner Aussage so grade dabei war sämtliche caminos abzuklappern, die es so gibt. Er saß am Wegesrand und pflückte etwas botanisches, welches ich erst beim näher betrachten als 4 blättrige Kleeblätter analysieren konnte. Er gab mir eines davon und wünschte mir viel Glück in meinem Leben, was ich natürlich zurück gegeben habe. Das ist wieder so ein macic moment, den man auf dem camino erleben darf. Und dann beim Einlauf nach melide, denke ich ich sehe nicht richtig, da strahlt mich doch tatsächlich das Firmenlogo meines alten Arbeitgebers Saint Gobain an. So klein ist die Welt.       wenn's am schönsten ist...

      nach 7 Wochen nehmen wir heute Abschied- und es ist nochmal ein perfekter Tag 🙃 Wir laufen an ein einsames Kap und genießen den perfekten Moment.
      Die Bucht ist ausgewählt, das Wetter ruft nach einem Strandausflug - und es ist herrlich!! Strandbar in der Nähe und bei Ebbe kann man gut baden gehen 😉
      Zum Schluss auch nochmal ein Highlight in Sachen Unterkunft- ein altes Kloster ist jetzt ein Gourmettempel, ein perfekter Abschluss!

      Got here in very short order, despite moderate discomfort. Should give some time to see this town and perhaps get a wax stamp from the store that offered the first Camino wax stamp, La Tienda de Ionut. This is the home of the Spanish ParaOlympic athlete Ionut Preda who has carved out his own business niche here. Dinner will have to be in town, as my lodging, La Cabaña had their main building burn down. But the log cabins were preserved! And they have a nice tented eating area for drinks and breakfast.

      Met Ronin a British cyclist living in New York. He started in London in early May and biked through France to St. Jean all The Way to here he will finish tomorrow. An avid vinophile, he was lucky to have met a winemaker in Bierzo who invited him to visit, so he carved out a 25 km detour near Villafranca del Bierzo. He reports that rural France is in very tough shape after Covid, being vulnerably dependent on the one market or the one baker in town.

      Tag 40 von Melide nach Salceda

      Heute war wieder ein sehr schöner und ruhiger Tag.
      Der Weg wahr wieder wunderschön es ging hauptsächlich durch Wälder und kleine Dörfer.
      Was die Landschaft angeht kann man nur sagen Wahnsinn.
      Es hatte schon angefangen mit einem außergewöhnlichen Sonnenaufgang.
      Ich selbst war heute so ruhig und gelassen genau das Gegenteil von gestern.
      Ich hoffe das es morgen so weitergeht.
      Jetzt ist die erste Etappe bis Santiago auch bald erreicht 💪.
      Mir selbst geht es richtig gut.
      Natürlich merkt man die Kilometer in den Beinen aber so wollte ich es ja haben.      Läs mer

      Finisterre to Santiago

      We caught an early bus back to Santiago de Compostela. It is very busy here - lots of pilgrims arriving and lots of locals as well. I have a different room in the same hotel facing another square and it is very loud and crowded but it still feels fun to be here.

      I bumped into Jenny Heesh down near the pilgrim’s office, you can never stop being surprised by the people you meet here when you least expect it. Jenny is from Cronulla and is the first person who gave me the idea about the Camino when we were volunteering together at the Sydney Writers’ Festival 3 years ago. So it was fitting to see her here when my Camino experience was coming to an end.

      Von melide nach salceda

      Hola a todas, heute stand die vorletzte längere Etappe von melide nach salceda auf dem Plan, welche mit 25km schon eine der längeren war. Also ich muss sagen, dass mir Galicia landschaftlich und von der Vegetation am besten von alles Bundesstaaten Spaniens gefällt. Natürlich hatte jede Sektion ihren besonderen Reiz. Die Temperaturen waren heute ideal zum pilgern und wenn Stella mal aufblühte, konnte man meist im Schatten der Bäume auf traumhaften Waldwegen schlendern. Es fand sich immer eine Möglichkeit mal einen cafe con leche y un bocadilla von jabon y queso zu genießen. Ich stelle ausserdem immer wieder fest, wenn man dem Land und den Menschen respektvoll gegenüber tritt, wird das freudig erwidert. Morgen geht es dann auf die vorletzte Etappe zum Monte do Gozo und am Sonntag der Einlauf nach Santiago. Gänsehautfeeling. Erkenntnis des Tages: Keine Ahnung 🤣🤣Läs mer

      Tag 41 von Salceda nach Monte de Gozo

      Der Tag war wieder einmal wunderschön, nicht so warm beim Laufen.
      Die Menge der Pilger nimmt immer mehr zu.
      Natürlich bedingt das hier immer mehr Wege zusammen laufen.
      Mir macht es aber nichts mehr aus.
      Morgen geht es nach Santiago das sind dann nur noch 4 km ein Spaziergang.
      Das Monte de Gozo ist der Punkt an dem das Pilgerdenkmal an dem man das erste mal die Kathedrale von Santiago de Compostela sieht.
      Ein wirklich tolles Gefühl.
      Ich kann es irgendwie noch garnicht fassen das ich die ganzen 800 km gelaufen bin.

      Santiago de Compostela

      We set off for a walk to the El Cortes Ingles which is a rare shopping centre/department store in Spain. We stopped for coffee on the way and saw Leigh Brennan walking her dog Cooper. Leigh is the host of the Camino Café podcast and I met her while staying at Casa Susi.

      On the way back from the shopping centre I saw Justin Skeesuck from I’ll Push You. He had just arrived in Santiago. We went over and introduced ourselves and chatted for a bit as you do with people from the Camino.

      After a delicious Italian meal we went to the Cathedral for our roof tour. Unfortunately it was in Spanish so we missed the history of the building but the views from the very, very sloped roof and tower were amazing.

      One of the great coincidences of the Camino was Sandra and I beginning on the same day in St Jean and both staying in Beilari. And both having the exact same backpack. As we were talked over the weeks we discovered an even greater connection. My dad came to Australia from Italy in 1951 and met Johnny Berton soon after. They remained close friends all their lives, dad was his best man and mum was Jessie’s matron of honour. We spent a lot of time with Johnny and Jessie and their four children when we were growing up. Carla is one of those children and is also one of Sandra’s closest friends. I will catch up with Sandra and Carla and hopefully Gina when we get home.

      My Camino really ends today as I leave for Madrid in the morning. What an adventure. I’ve loved all of it, even the bits that were very challenging at the time. Will I do it again? I will have to wait and see!

      Von salceda nach monte de gozo

      Hallo zusammen, sooo, die letzte längere Etappe ist nun auch Geschichte. Morgenfrüh geht es die letzten ca 4,5km nach Santiago de Compostella. Dazu Morgen mehr. Die Etappe heute war auf Grund der angenehmen Temperaturen zum genießen. Am Ende stand dann wieder ein macic moment auf dem Plan und zwar mit dem erreichen des Monte de gozo. Dort stehen die beiden weltberühmten Pilgerskulturen. Der Blick von dort auf Santiago hat Gänsehautcharkter. Hab mich erstmal hingesetzt den Moment genossen und ihn telefonisch Lisa geteilt.       Melidé

      At the end of dinner, a man, whom I thought to be Australian, turned me and asked, do you speak English? I replied, “Un poquito, why do you ask?” “Ha, Ha, an American!” And he limped off. His table mates explained that his shoes over the past two days and 25 km have been golf shoes and they are putting him in a taxi tomorrow. Samantha, Nick James and Grainne James are Irish and invited me over for a glass of wine. It was Grainnes’ 60th birthday yesterday and they are traveling the last 100km of The Del Norte Way. Eventually they will meet a larger group in Salamanca. A good time of fellowship and discussing parenting and Grainnes advice (she is a psychologist). Be open to reconciliation and “make an intentional space” for it.

      I will hike back to Furelos to try to catch its uncommon crucifix. The elder brother of the pair that runs Carlos 96 advises it’s a market day in Melidé which will be fun.
      Made it to the Igrexa de San Xoan de Furelos, but sadly the church has been closed since Covid. It’s crucifix is supposed to be unique since Christ is atypically pointing one hand to heaven while the other reaches to earth.

      Regrouped and found the Sunday market in Melidé and went to mass at Igrexa San Pedro de Melidé. Found the historical cultural museum across the street, housed in a former Hospital.      Läs mer
