Day 6 - Carreço to Caminha

      17. april, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Today, as in the last few days, we’ve chosen to take the main coastal route rather than the coastal litoral route to start the day. This put us much more up on the mountain, which is a lot more work because it’s a lot more climbing. But the rewards were amazing because the views were incredible. We were up in the trees where the eucalyptus forests were cool and the trails were beautiful. We walked down paths with ancient walls and over old stone bridges. We took the road less traveled and were so glad we did.

After about 6 miles we joined back with the litoral route and was treated to perfect coastal weather, no crowds and a path that was perfectly flat (something very different than climbing in the hills this morning). The path took us into Caminha where we are staying tonight. It is a wonderful village for our last day in Portugal. You can feel its age and character everywhere you look. We had a fun walk through the open market and then spent the afternoon in the square drinking beer, sipping coffees and enjoying the Portuguese pastries for the last time. Well, maybe we will have one more chance for pastries in the morning for breakfast. 😉

Tomorrow we take a boat across the river to Spain. Spain has a lot to live up to. 🇵🇹 ❤️

      Aqualonga at long last.

      28. april, Portugal ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Well, the time has finally arrived for me to climb the desolate mountain to reclaim the lost Dwarven kingdom of Erebor from the foul dragon Smaug. The rain started lightly, then not so much for almost 2 hours! I was shivering and couldn't wait for food and good bed. The burger had a fried patty of mac n cheese, and the castle like house I'm staying at is incredible, and the old man was very kind.Les mer

      Tag 5

      29. april, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Trail was mostly cobblestone, through small villages, lots of uphill, a little eucalyptus forest. Walked with 2 ladies from Toronto which made the 9+ miles go faster. Our hostel is an old refurbished school.

Ciao Portugal , hola Espana! 27.881 Schritte und 19,78 km Wandertour. Mit Kultur dann 32.190 Schritte und 22,89 kmLes mer

      Day 4 walking

      19. april, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

12 miles today (roughly). Much easier than yesterday. Had time off in Valenca, Portugal which has a very large fortress that surrounds the city. Happy to have a salad with tuna and a Coke Zero at a cute cafe. Then we walked into Tui, Spain via a bridge that I did not love. My suitcase zipper is having issues so that’s not great but we will figure something out. I jammed it one too many times and this morning it had it. I’ve got one working zipper and hope to be able to find some luggage straps to get me home. 🙏 but that’s a long time from now and you all know I’m all about being where my feet are! Louise and I did laundry today which was awesome. I’m on the 4th floor in essentially the attic room tonight - up a spiral staircase so Piero and Miguel will have fun getting my suitcase down to the floor below where the elevator is. Had great times of silence today. Another beautiful blue sky. Had to buy more sunscreen today as I have used a whole tube, but have managed to avoid sunburn. Listened to a wonderful Tim Keller sermon and my praise mix which I find really helps me to connect with God and have my prayer time. We had dinner at 8 at a fun tapas restaurant. But that’s so late for me. The town square is hopping. Kids on scooters that light up and parents enjoying dinner and drinks outside. No one seems to be tired, but us! Night night.Les mer

Day 7 - Caminha to Oia

      18. april, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

I think we were smuggled into Spain today……

Getting up and going today was hard. Probably because we were all unusually sound asleep when the alarm went off. The thought of walking all day had lost its appeal. But today was not a day to dawdle as we had paid ahead for breakfast at the Albergue and a taxi to the river to catch a boat for Spain.

Well breakfast was great and then the taxi showed up as promised. Four of us were loaded in and then sped away through the streets of Caminha like we were in a 007 movie. We held on for dear life and were then dumped off at an obscure place on the river where three guys were waiting for us and yelling 6€! 6€! We had our money ready, threw it at guy #1, was loaded into the boat by guy #2 and guy #3 threw us each a life jacket and just said “policia” which we understood to be he was only giving us a life jacket because it was the law. It was a crazy 15 minute boat ride across a choppy river with water slashing in the boat the whole way. We laughed until we cried 😂

The driver pulled up on the opposite shore (no dock) and we jumped out. He waved, backed away and off he went. We were now standing on the shore of Spain with zero direction where to go. Again we laughed until we cried 😂

This was the beginning of the best day ever. Perfect weather (again), perfect views, amazing second breakfast stop, fun conversations with other pilgrims, another great Albergue with free washer AND DRYER (so no handwashing and line drying today!!)

I don’t want to jinx it but after a questionable start to our morning, this may be the best Camino day EVER. ❤️

      Ramellosa

Day 5 walking to Porrino, 🇪🇸

      20. april, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

11 miles today. Mostly flat and along rivers. Another gorgeous day. Wonderful time of silence in the morning and listening to a great podcast of experience, strength and hope that had me laughing out loud (thanks, Lorna K.). We arrived in the sweet town of Porrino at maybe 3 and went on the hunt for salads. Tricky to find a place with a kitchen open at this time, but we found one. Tonight is a big fashion show in the square and it’s happening. Had dinner at the hotel. Then Adriana, Gus and I went to find gelato and check out the fashion show. It was rocking, but I’m exhausted. Tmrw we are walking in time to see the sunrise (7:40 am) so we will walk out of our hotel at 7:15. The hotel has provided boxed breakfasts for us tonight that we put in our fridges. We bought cold Starbucks and other pre made iced lattes at the grocery store this afternoon to have in the morning. Tmrw night is our last dinner with Miguel who is our guide and driver. After Monday we will use a luggage transfer service which has a 33 pound weight limit so I will have to put some “extra” stuff in the van each day so I meet the weight requirement. The great thing this trip is that we are walking from every destination to our next destination and when we arrive at our accommodations Piero or Miguel have pre delivered our luggage. They also carry it to the van from outside our hotel rooms every morning. It’s so wonderful. Our group of 8 is a great size. I would not recommend doing in any larger group. The Camino is a very intimate experience and you want to walk together cohesively for the most part, etc. Tmrw Louise and I are going to be totally silent for the entire 11 miles. It will be challenging, but what I need. It’s hard for me to spend too much time in my head so this is about all I can handle. I’ll report back tomorrow. 🙏🥰Les mer

      Tag 6
