      Kandy to airport - the last day

      Went the temple of the tooth, to see where buddha's actual tooth is encased within a gold case.

      From there north to Surigiya, to see a fortress palace, where in the year 450 AD, a rival prince to the kingdom , established a stronghold, containing 400 concubines. Sounded by a moat, packed with crocodiles it contained water gardens, swimming pools...

      Then to probably our best meal of the trip. Dimuthu took us to another mates restaurant. We didnt think we were hungry but were soon proved otherwise.

      Impressionen Kandy

      Heute haben wir den ganzen Tag im Zahntempel (Sri Dalada Maligawa) verbracht. Das ist der allerheiligste Ort der Stadt Kandy.

      Seit 1988 gehört der Sri Dalada Maligawa zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe und soll den Überlieferungen nach einen Eckzahn des ersten Buddhas beinhalten. Zwischen 1687 und 1782 wurde der Tempel erbaut. Unter sieben vergoldeten Dagobas wird der Eckzahn Buddhas aufbewahrt und dreimal am Tag von den Gläubigen durch Gebete und Opfergaben verehrt.

      Auf dem Tempelgelände haben wir Fernando kennengelernt, der mal für 8 Jahre in Deutschland gelebt hat. Er hat uns herum geführt und uns die Geschichte von Buddha erzählt. Wir waren sehr überrascht, wie ehrfürchtig Elli war.
      Als uns Fernando die erste Statue von Buddha gezeigt hat, fing Elli direkt an zu beten - hat sich im Schneidersitz auf den Boden gesetzt und die Hände zusammen genommen. Von da an hat sie das bei jeder Buddha-Figur gemacht, selbst bei denen im Souvenir-Shop 😂

      Der Tempel war schon sehr beeindruckend. Wir haben uns sogar noch das dazugehörige Museum - hier werden es Buddha-Stauen aus aller Welt ausgestellt - angeschaut.      Leia mais

      Kandy

      Hoje visitámos a cidade de Kandy que é a 2 maior cidade do país. Pareceu-nos uma cidade, dentro do que são as cidades asiáticas, bastante tranquila. Tem o bulício, o trânsito caótico de motas, tuck tucks e autocarros fumarentos mas ao estar rodeado de montanhas e floresta não se sente aquela claustrofobia asfixiante de se estar metido numa cidade enlatada. As pessoas são extremamente simpáticas sem chegar a sentir que te estão a tentar enganar ou vender a banha de cobra. Claro que te perguntam sempre de onde és e quando respondemos Portugal e Espanha a seguinte resposta é Ronaldo, Ronaldo com um grande sorriso marcado na cara.

      Fomos primeiro ver um templo com um buda gigante a tomar conta da cidade desde o alto. Depois baixámos à cidade, deambulámos pelo mercado central onde se vendia chá, especiarias, carne e peixe em montras ao ar livre, fruta e legumes de todos os tipos e roupa típica. Por último passeamos pelo parque florestal de Udawatekelle que foi o que mais gostámos da cidade. É um parque muito frequentado por jovens casais enamorados que encontram aqui um refúgio de olhares indesejados e lhes permitem disfrutar do silêncio e a paz deste lugar. O que mais nos surpreendeu foi a quantidade de lianas trepando, emaranhadas e saltando de árvore em árvore, algumas com mais de 200 anos. Também se podem observar bamboos gigantes, árvores gigantes que chegam a tapar o céu garantindo um ambiente fresco e sombreado a todos os visitantes. O parque é cuidado desde o séc. XIV pelos reis de diferentes dinastias devido a um famoso brahmin que vivia numa das grutas. Também serviade refúgio quando a cidade era atacada.

      Antes de recolhermos ao hotel ainda passámos pela estação de comboios para entregarmos a mota, que vai seguir diretamente para Ella num comboio de mercadorias. Mais uma vez supreendeu-nos a boa vontade de todos os funcionários e até da polícia em querer-nos ajudar e não nos levantaram nenhum problema apesar de não termos encontrado nenhuma informação na internet se seria possível esta opção. Assim que por uns módicos 3 euros assunto resolvido.      Leia mais

      Drittes Hotel Topas

      Das Hotel liegt auf dem Berg über Kandy. Der Ausblick war fantastisch. Da Präsidentschaftswahlen in Sri Lanka waren. Alle Läden waren an dem Sonntag geschlossen und es gab kein Alkohol, auch nicht für Ausländer. In dem angrenzenden Schmuckladen habe ich mir ein Ring anfertigen lassen.Leia mais

      Kandy

      After taking our leave from Roy's Villa, once again lucked out when we snagged a Uber ride to get us to Kandy. I groaned when the driver asked me to cancel the ride and pay him in cash, but I did so because I wasn't sure if we would find another ride. Our driver was from Colombo and he was heading home. The ride to Kandy took about two hours.

      After checking in at the Viyana Boutique Hotel by Kandy Lake, we sought out the Lonely Planet recommended Empire Cafe for lunch. There, we enjoyed lunch on the verandah, which was next to the entrance to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth.

      After lunch, we circumnavigated Kandy Lake. We especially enjoyed observing the ducks and the monitor lizards at the lake.

      In the evening, we walked a short distance to the Slightly Chilled Restaurant and Bar for food and drinks with Becky and Chris, whom we met at Roy's Villa, and their friends - a brother and sister duo named Charlie and Tracy - who were also traveling through Sri Lanka. We had an enjoyable time chatting and eating at the rooftop bar. There. we were treated to a fireworks display in the distance.      Leia mais

      Kandyan Dance

      After leaving Helga's Folly, we once again walked around the lake. When we arrived back in town, we booked tickets to the evening's dance performance. The ticket seller even walked us into the performance hall so that we could reserve seats by writing our names on a placard and placing them on our chosen seats.

      In the late afternoon, we headed out in the rain to the venue of the dance performance. The performance featured percussion - and no other musical instruments - throughout the various dances. The dances by the men featured a lot of acrobatics. The womens' dances, while graceful, weren't particularly enthralling.

      After the dances, the audience moved aside while the chairs were rearranged around the sides of the hall. We were then treated to a firewalking demonstration in the middle.      Leia mais

      Unser erster Buddha

      Weil der Schlaf in den letzten Tagen etwas zu kurz gekommen ist, haben wir heute Morgen erstmal einmal richtig ausgeschlafen.
      Netterweise wartete ein Mitarbeiter der Küche den ganzen Vormittag auf uns und bereitete uns ein sehr liebevolles und leckeres Frühstück mit Kaffee, Rührei, Toast und viel frischem Obst.

      Auch der Hostelchef kümmerte sich sehr fürsorglich um unser Wohl. Er organisierte uns einen Tuk Tuk Fahrer der uns zu unserem ersten Tagesziel fuhr: der Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue.
      Den steilen Aufstieg meisterte das kleine Tuk Tuk mit Bravour.
      An der Statue angekommen mussten wir erst einmal unsere Flip Flops ausziehen. Bei 33°C in der Sonne war der Gang auf dem Fliesenboden eine absolute Qual. Unsere Füße brannten nach wenigen Sekunden und wir hüpften von Schattenfleck zu Schattenfleck. Auf kleinen ausgelegten Teppichen konnten wir es einigermaßen aushalten.

      Unser Tuk Tuk Fahrer wusste zu berichten, dass der Bau der Statue 15 Jahre dauerte und die Statue 1993 geweiht wurde.
      Alle ein bis zwei Jahre erfolgt ein neuer Anstrich mit ca. 50.000 Litern Farbe.

      Glücklicherweise durften wir sogar ein paar Fotos machen. Allerdings gilt es zu beachten, dass man einer Buddha Statue niemals den Rücken zudrehen darf.      Leia mais

      Tag 4: Kandy

      Kandy ist laut, versmogt und hat unglaublich viel Verkehr. Außerdem ist es die Hauptstadt Sri Lanka's.

      In Kandy gibt es einen künstlich angelegten See. Dieser wurde 1812 vom letzten singhalesischen König angelegt, einfach nur weil seine Tochter eine Insel in Kandy haben wollte. Da vorher kein See für eine Insel da war, wurde eben einer gebaut.

      Wir haben eine TukTuk Tour gemacht, zum Tempel wo der Bahiravakanda Buddha ist. Auf einem Hügel schaut der Buddha über Kandy, wie die Christusstatue über Rio de Janeiro.

      Unterwegs haben wir ein Militär TukTuk gesehen. Das war ein richtig offizielles Militär TukTuk!      Leia mais

      Kandy 1; Market, Town and Lake

      Kandy has a long history of political independence and was the seat of the last Sinhalese government until it succumbed to the British in 1815. Kandy is a cultural centre, and the arts and crafts capital of the island; it is also home to its most revered Buddhist temple, its most sacred relic, and has a tradition of dancing and drumming.

      We start at the Clock Tower and visit the markets opposite it (on both sides of the road) before walking back to the lake. We pass the magnificent Queen's Hotel and visit St Paul's Church; this is close to three of Kandy's four devales - each of the four Guardian Gods for Kandy has a devale (temple) devoted to it and we visit the Pattini Devale (Goddess of Chastity).

      We then walk around the lake, enjoying great views; the lake was created in the 19th century, and this very popular stroll is about 3km in length.      Leia mais

      Tee bei einem Mönch

      Wir waren in Kandy bei einem Tempel, bei dem wir das große Glück hatten, mit einem Mönch ins Gespräch zu kommen, der uns sogar zum Tee in sein Zuhause einlud. Wir haben dort fast 2 Stunden verbracht. Es war so ein schönes Gespräch. Er war auch schon einige Male in Deutschland in Flinte sogar etwas deutsch. Abschließend wurden wir von ihm gesegnet.Leia mais
