      Day 11 : On the way to Houston

      Direction Houston ! On quitte Corpus Christi dans la matinée pour rejoindre Houston et son downtown.
      Juste avant d'arriver, Alex me fait une crise d'enfant (😂) car il veut absolument manger dans un In-N-Out Burger, son fast-food préféré ! On s'y arrête donc car on en trouve un avant d'entrer dans la ville ! 😆 Bon c'est vrai que leurs burgers sont vraiment bons ! 😉
      On récupère ensuite notre hôtel dans le downtown de Houston. Hôtel que l'on a choisi volontairement très central dans la ville, c'est vraiment cool !
      Après une petite promenade au milieu des buildings, on s'arrête à un bar où ils vendent de la bière belge ! Alex est aux anges jusqu'au moment où il voit les prix des bières belges ! Il se résout finalement à prendre une bière de Houston ! 🤣🤣 La bière belge attendra !      Leia mais

      Houston Tunnel System

      Gestern hatten wir einen sehr schönen Abend. Maurits und ich waren im Axelrad Beergarden und haben in den dort hängenden Hängematten ein bisschen gequatscht und getrunken🍹wir haben auch noch drei andere guys aus dem Hostel dort getroffen, die sich dann zu uns gesellt haben.🤩

      Heute habe ich eine Tour durch das Tunnelsystem von Houston gemacht und einiges darüber und auch über die Geschichte und die Skyscraper der Stadt erfahren🌃

      Nachmittags habe ich noch einen Spaziergang durch Downtown und Midtown gemacht🚶🏽‍♀️Dabei bin ich auch an der Graffiti Wall vorbei gekommen, die unter anderem ein Portrait von George Floyd darstellt mit den Worten “I can’t breathe”. War ein sehr emotionaler Moment🙏🏾❤️      Leia mais

      Le Texas sous la pluie : Houston

      Nous voilà en road trip dans le Texas avec Cécile pour 9 jours ! Au programme : départ de Lafayette, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas et retour à Lafayette. On part à 4, Jeanne, Violette, Cécile et moi mais il y a un passager clandestin qui ne va pas nous lâcher du séjour : la pluie. Des fois en arrière plan, souvent omniprésente, le crachin est là, partout où nous allons.

      Première étape : Houston ! Nous dormons chez des amis des parents de Vio, qui nous prêtent leur immense maison. Comme il pleut, on visite une galerie d'art francophone très chouette, entre contemporain et sculptures antiques. On profite d'une éclaircie pour traîner dans le Downtown, entre les buildings. Et malheureusement, pas beaucoup plus à voir dans la ville connue pour sa base spatiale.      Leia mais

      Houston

      Nach einer vier stündigen Busfahrt bin ich in Houston angekommen und wurde lieb empfangen in meinem gebuchten Hostel, dem Wanderstay Houston Hostel.
      Das erste was ich nach meiner Ankunft gemacht habe war natürlich mal wieder Wäsche waschen 🧼 Nachdem ich sie wie so üblich über meinem Bett aufgehängt habe, kam auf einmal ein Junge in mein Zimmer… war bisschen confused bis ich dann meine Buchung angeschaut habe und gesehen habe, dass ich aus Versehen ein Mixed room gebucht habe statt einen Female Room🙈 daran musste ich mich erst mal gewöhnen aber ehrlich gesagt ist es nichts anderes als mit Mädls, sind alle bis jetzt total nett und reden viel. Leider musste ich gerade fest stellen, dass ich den australischen Akzent überhaupt nicht verstehe🫣😂 habe wirklich versucht, seiner Geschichte zu folgen aber irgendwann hab ich dann einfach nur noch “ja” gesagt und die Konversation war schnell beendet😂

      Ich habe auch einen Berliner in meinem Hostel der mit dem Radl von New York bis nach San Antonio fahren wollte… leider hatte er hier in Texas einen Radl Unfall und wurde von einem Truck erwischt. Bis auf dass, dass sein Radl hin ist und er einen Zahn verloren hat und Schürfwunden im Gesicht hat, ist er zum Glück wohl auf. Habe ihn das erste Mal morgens gesehen, da dachte ich, er ist vom feiern heim gekommen und hatte noch die Überreste von seinem Halloween Make up im Gesicht pappen… bis er mir dann von seinem Unfall erzählt hat.
      Ein super lustiger - typischer Berliner mit dem ich gerade in der Küche eines der lustigsten Gespräche hatte, die ich je hatte😂🤌🏾

      Houston ist ganz in Ordnung. Habe das Gefühl, ich habe innerhalb der drei Tage die ich hier bin, bis auf das Space Center schon alles gesehen🫣🌳🌆
      Die nächsten Tage habe ich also genug Zeit, mich wieder ein bisschen um meinen Sport zu kümmern🤌🏾

      Eigentlich wollten Maurits (einer aus Utrecht, Niederlande) und ich zusammen ins Fitnessstudio gehen. Da ich so müde bin und er so spät vom Space Center heim kam haben wir uns entschlossen, jetzt noch in einen Biergarten zu gehen der ihm die letzten Abende so gut gefallen hat - ist ja fast das gleiche wie Sport🍻🏋🏽‍♀️😂      Leia mais

      Houston, wir haben ein Problem.....

      Diesen Satz, gefunkt von John Swigert 1970, kennt wohl jeder.
      Ausgerechnet die Apollo 13 Mission die im Juli 1970 um 13:13 Uhr startete lief nicht wie gewünscht und musste abgebrochen werden.

      Das und das drumherum wollten wir uns mal näher anschauen. Deshalb stand heute der Besuch des NASA Space Centers auf dem Programm.

      Auf dem Weg nach Houston machten wir einen Abstecher nach Austin.
      Dort besuchten wir das Grab von Chris Kyle.

      It's HOT in Houston

      This morning I was up bright and early for my flight to Houston. Headed down to free breakfast to test out the stomach after not being too well. Able to eat yoghurt and a banana, I jumped on the airport shuttle and got to the airport early. The first flight was back to Denver as that is where Southwest Airlines hub is. In the airport, an older guy sparked up a conversation when he heard my accent. He told me his daughter was headed to USYD to study, so we were chatting about that. The flight was easy, only had about 40 minute layover so had a bagel and a coffee also called Stacy as the boys wanted to talk to me which was so sweet. The next flight was longer but went quickly as well.
      Then finally I was in Houston! Got my bags and walked outside... Well it was about 37 degrees and humid, a bit of a change from the other stops...
      Hannah, my former UK teammate picked me up and it was so lovely to see them. We drove to their house and it is such a cute open space. They have decorated it so well. I met their two cats, Hops and Simcoe (the type of hops they use for their beer). Simcoe is super friendly but Hops is a bit more standoffish.
      We then headed to the Post which was a former post office building, but now it is a food court. There were so many places to eat, from South African, South American, Indian, Mexican and everything in between. Hannah and I split some chicken/rice dish and a fatti (an Indian taco) which went down well. We then headed to Frost Town Brewery which is the brewery that John and Hannah own. The space was MASSIVE with indoor and outdoor areas. They showed me where they brew, can and work in the space. It's honestly incredible what they have built in less than a year! I then got to try their award winning Frostbier - a Kolsch, which was great. I sat at the bar while Hannah and John worked, chatting with their bar tenders, Jacob and Clara who were awesome. There was a baseball game so it got quite busy for a Wednesday, it was fun to watch all the people come by.
      It was then time for trivia, I sat with a bunch of regulars some of whom are Hannah's friends. They were such a clever bunch and all really friendly. Trivia was insanely hard, John runs it with a friend and I knew little to nothing. The night went quickly and I found myself exhausted from a long day. We finally went home and I fell asleep very quickly.      Leia mais

      Zoals gepland hingen we 10 uur in de lucht. Na deze nacht niet geslapen te hebben was ik terwijl ik topgun op had gezet als een blok inslaap gevallen. Ongeveer boven Ierland werd er om geroepen dat de warme maaltijd geserveerd zou worden. Vegatarische pasta met een breekbroodje😋 Dit op eten en dan verder slapen. KusjesLeia mais

      #Houston - Lonestar Cookers Rodeo

      In Houston besuchen wir nochmal Shannon & Stacey und Jeaux (ihren Hund). Sie haben uns eingeladen mit Ihnen zum Cookoff Festival zu gehen, dass in Houston stattfindet. Das Unternehmen für das Shannon arbeitet, sponsert eines der Zelte die am Cookoff teilnehmen und er erhält daher Tickets für dieses Event. Es war wirklich ein einmaliges Erlebnis. Das ganze Gelände war aufgebaut wie eine Messe, es gab Fahrgeschäft, Fressbuden, einen Streichelzoo, eine Live Band und natürlich wieder frittierte Oreos. Wir sind ja schließlich in Texas.
      Im Zelt, für das wir VIP Bändchen von Shannon bekommen haben, gab es kostenloses Essen und Getränke sowie eine Band. Man fühlt sich schon etwas besonders, wenn man als VIP irgendwo ist und wir haben es vollends ausgekostet (schön Deutsch, soll sich ja rentieren).
      Irgendwann im Laufe des Abends sind Shannon & Stacey plötzlich auf die Tanzfläche gestürmt und auf einmal hat das gesamte Zelt die selbe Choreo getanzt. Wir haben uns ziemlich gewundert, warum alle den selben Tanz können. Sie meinten dann ganz locker zu uns, dass „Line Dance“ in Texas in allen Clubs gespielt werden und deshalb jeder die Schritte von dem knapp 20 Tänzen kennt. Ich bin dann auch mit eingestiegen und für‘s erste mal hab ich mich garnicht so schlecht angestellt!

      Wir hatten auf jeden Fall richtig viel Spaß mit den beiden und es war schön sie wieder zu sehen!

      Noch ein kleine Fun Fact am Rande: Beim Festival war erstaunlich viel Polizei präsent. Wir haben sogar ein Polizei Golfcart an uns vorbei flitzen sehen! Ich hab mich ziemlich gewundert, warum so viel Polizei notwendig ist. Anscheinend kommt es bei solchen Events regelmäßig zu Prügeleien und anderen Ausschreitungen, weil die Amis einfach keinen Alkohol vertragen!      Leia mais

      Museum Blitz

      Today I woke up and had a quick breakfast, before we all headed out. We dropped John at the brewery and Hannah and I headed to Arne's. Arne's is the biggest party store I've ever been to. It was 2 levels and the shelves were packed with everything and anything you could think of. The off brand Disney pinatas, Barbie box costume, gummy hot dogs in proper packaging, honestly I could have spent hours there. We got some decorations for the pride run that the brewery is putting on Sunday.
      Then Hannah dropped me off in the museum district of Houston. Majority of museums are free on Thursdays/Thursdays after 2pm so it was time for a blitz. I wanted to stay out of the heat as my app said it felt like 40 degrees too. I started at the Fine Arts museum, wandering around 3 levels of some quite good art. It wasn't as abstract as some art museums I've been to. However I didn't know there were 2 more buildings to discover... But after 3 hours I was more than ready to have lunch.
      I stopped at a taco restaurant and grabbed enchiladas with a beer which were super dooper tasty. I then walked to the health museum which was definitely for children under about 7, so was absolutely teeming with families. I spent maybe 30 mins trying to read and enjoy but it was a lot. So I walked to the holocaust museum and that was fantastic. It did such a great job at humanising and sharing the story. I spent about 2 hours there and definitely needed a hug after.
      Last museum on the list was the natural science museum and wow when I got there, it was going off. There were people everywhere, I used it as my training for Disneyworld next week. The museum itself was set out in a rather confusing way, the signs were not clear and the exhibits were average. I did enjoy the exhibition which took you through evolution of life, through dinosaurs and megafauna but by the end I just wanted to get out.
      I thought about my options for dinner but then Hannah messaged me and told me they were going to finish up and head for dinner. So I caught the light rail downtown and walked to the brewery. I grabbed a beer and then we headed to a Mexican restaurant with their friend Connor who ran the trivia. It was great just all sitting around chatting and the waiter was so sweet. He didn't speak much English and was very forgetful, clearly stressed out as well. It was a great way to end the world's busiest day of museums.      Leia mais

      #Houston die Dritte

      Uuund wieder sind wir in Houston. Dieses mal für das Finale der Rodeo World Championship wobei sich "Weltmeister" natürlich auf die USA bezieht. Das Event ist einfach fanatisch. Rodeos sind ziemlich speziell und sicherlich nicht für jeden etwas, aber wir haben Spaß. Egal ob Bullen reiten, Kälber fesseln oder Fass-Rennen, es macht einfach Spaß zuzuschauen. Dieses mal gibt es auch ein Kinderrodeo, bei dem Kinder auf Schafe gesetzt werden. Die Kinder klammern sich wie Äffchen an das Schaf und versuchen nicht herunter zu fallen. Drei von uns finden das ziemlich lustig, aus einer von uns schlägt das Mutterherz zu laut, weshalb ich für jedes "Yeehaa" einen bösen Blick bekomme😈🤣

      Was darf nach einem Rodeo in Texas auf keinen Fall fehlen? Natürlich Maschinengewehre. An einem Schießstand testen wir eine Uzi, eine Magnum und eine M16. Es macht wirklich Spaß "rumzuballern" und das Testosteron steigt merklich an. Memo an mich selbst: Leg dich nie mit Mara an. Vorallem nicht wenn sie bewaffnet ist. Sie war verdammt Treffsicher.

      Abgesehen vom Rodeo und dem Schießstand lernen wir zudem die "Untergrundwelt" von Houston kennen. Die gesamte Innenstadt ist sowohl überirdisch, als auch unterirdisch zu begehen. Oben verläuft die Straßenbahn, es gibt Parks und Geschäftsgebäude. Unterirdisch gibt es Cafés, Restaurants und Unterhaltungsgeschäfte. Ziemlich cool und erstaunlich gepflegt.
      Jedes Mal wenn wir nach Houston kommen bietet uns die Stadt ein neues Highlight, ich bin gespannt, wann wir das nächste mal hier sind.      Leia mais
