Questa mattina ci siamo svegliati alle 4.30, pronti ad uscire alle 5, per fare nuovamente un tour in barca sul Gange, ma questa volta per vedere l’alba.
Peccato per la foschia e la nebbia, perche non abbiamo visto una bella alba, ma è stato comunque un po’ mistico vedere la città con la nebbia.
Dopo la gita in barca siamo andati a vedere la Gath dove fanno le pire con i loro morti. Qui i morti vengono prima immersi nell’acqua del Gange, poi bruciati sulle pire di legno per circa tre ore e infine una manciata di ceneri e una parte non bruciata del corpo viene raccolta dalla famiglia e buttata nel Gange per chiudere la cerimonia. Solitamente è il primo genito ad accendere la pira e le donne si vedono raramente perchè a quanto pare per loro è troppo dura assistere alla cremazione.

Dopo aver visto le pire ci siamo addentrati nelle stradine della città vecchia, che erano piene di murales e pitture molto molto belle. Le stradine di primo mattino erano molto tranquille.
Siamo tornati qui verso mezzogiorno ed era tutto molto più caotico, ma vedere e passeggiare queste stradine è stata una delle cose che mi e piaciuta di più a Varanasi, assieme alla ceremonia completa di cremazione che abbiamo visto mentre passeggiavamo lungo i Gath dopo colazione.

Varanasi è una città particolare, la prima impressione non è stata la stessa della secondo giorno…infatti il primo giorno non mi aveva colpito, ma il secondo giorno mi sono ricreduta.

Qui a Varanasi si conclude il mio viaggio in India, domani torno in Indonesia, più precisamente a Bali.

This morning we woke up at 4.30, ready to go out at 5, to take a boat tour on the Ganges again, but this time to see the sunrise.
It's a shame about the mist and fog, because we didn't see a beautiful sunrise, but it was still a bit mystical to see the city in the fog.
After the boat trip we went to see the Gath where they make pyres with their dead. Here the dead are first immersed in the water of the Ganges, then burned on wooden pyres for about three hours and finally a handful of ashes and an unburned part of the body are collected by the family and thrown into the Ganges to close the ceremony. It is usually the first son to light the pyre and the women are rarely seen because apparently it is too hard for them to attend the cremation.

After seeing the pyres we entered the narrow streets of the old city, which were full of very beautiful murals and paintings. The streets were very quiet in the early morning.
We returned here around midday and everything was much more chaotic, but seeing and walking these streets was one of the things I liked most in Varanasi, together with the complete cremation ceremony that we saw while walking along the Gath after breakfast.

Varanasi is a particular city, the first impression was not the same as the second day... in fact the first day I wasn't impressed, but on the second day I changed my mind.
