    WNE comes to a close

    December 12, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

This past week, my study abroad program came to a close! There were many sad goodbyes, but this group still had fun until the end! Even admits essay writing, we found time to get coffee, hang out at Christmas markets, have a Christmas party, and more! Sarah, Leila, Em, Tyler, and I, even found ourselves at a Hozier concert! It was an amazing way to end the program! I will miss WNE so much! However… Sarah and I remain in Berlin for 1 more week! A little cooldown! Post coming soonRead more

    HaHoHey! Bertha BSC!

    December 3, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ -2 °C

I attended a Hertha BSC match with Miles and Joel! Hertha BCS play their homes matches in the historic Olympiastadion, which was built for the 1936 Olympics. These games were famously played during the Nazi Regime, in which Hitler hoped to display the “dominance of the Aryan race” in sports. Of course, he would be proved wrong by Jesse Owen’s, The Ohio State University track star who won 4 gold medals, the most of any athlete at those games. Such amazing history to this stadium!
The Blau played SC Elversberg, and after a scary start with a goal for SC Elversberg called back, Hertha turned it around and dominated 5-1! The passion from the fans was electric, and I can say that Berlin ist Blau und Weis!

    Vienna waited

    November 25, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Vienna!!! Sarah, Halle, Tyler, Isabella and I spent a few days here for our 3 day holiday following Thanksgiving! While we didn’t do too much other than visit Christmas markets, eat yummy food, and hang out “by the fire” in our AirB&B, this weekend was one of my favorites so far! Christmas arrived in full force with the opening of the Vienna Christmas Markets, and we were even treated to some snow! Sarah and I also had the first of our many Christmas market bratwurst’s, or in this particular case “Wiener Weeners” 😂 I also had my first ever batch of roasted chestnuts! It was such a blessed time with wonderful people, and I cannot believe that things are wrapping up so soon!Read more

    Slovakia

    November 12, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

A wild two weeks! Slovakians must never sleep or eat, because our guides, Juraj and Alena, did not stop the group once! We stayed in 3 different places: Bratislava (the capital), Banská Štiavnica, and the High Tatras! Our accommodations were some of the best on the trip, including the 4 star Grand Praha Hotel in the Tatras! We spent time in old wooden Lutheran churches, the mines, at castles, trying chocolate beer, shopping at Christmas markets, and on TOO MANY TRAINS (one of which caught on fire)! We also had the pleasure of being served a traditional Slovakian goose feast for thanksgiving!

Ahead of us is a three day weekend in Vienna, and the finale of our program in Berlin!

    GLS + Homestays

    October 23, 2023 in Germany

For the last 3 weeks, WNE has been in home-stays and German Language School (GLS)! We were all divided up, and I was so lucky as to land with Cole, Andrew, Braedon, and Jo! Us five guys were assigned to Jörg and Angela, a lovely couple who were born and raised in the former East Germany (GDR)! They have been such kind hosts! They cook for us every breakfast and dinner (we get lunch at GLS), and Angela even does our laundry for us on the weekends!

We have become very familiar with the M1 Tram, which takes us to and from school each day.

GLS has also been incredible! Even in three weeks, I can tell that my German has improved dramatically! However it is less beautiful than it’s cousin, Dutch. Our teachers are engaging and hilarious. They also never miss an opportunity to jab at “Dumm Amerikaner” 😂

We wrap up our 2nd of 3 blocks in Berlin on Friday when we depart for Bratislava, Slovakia! It is all flying by!

The last photo is of Sarah waiting for her train after we departed from our 1.5 year anniversary dinner! She is so precious to me 🥰

    PRA-GUE, HA, GA

    October 18, 2023 in Czech Republic ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

    4-day weekend in Prague!!

Halle, Sarah and I departed from Berlin on Wednesday, a journey which included a delayed train, a sketchy bus ride, and lots of essay writing. After finally arriving, we were met by Halle’s fiancé Tyler, who had flown out to meet us for the weekend! We stayed in an Airbnb in Old Town Prague, a block away from the iconic Astronomical Clock!

We visited the Prague castle, the Charles Bridge, the Dancing house, took a few naps, and per usual, ate very very well!

On Friday, Sarah and I got haircuts! This adventure was exciting and a little stressful trying to explain what we wanted to hair dressers who did not speak English!

It was such a relaxing and refreshing time and of course it was so awesome to spend some time with Tyler!

We are currently on the train back to Berlin where we will be staying in home-stays for the next 3 weeks, while going to German Language School!

    Berrrrrrlin

    October 8, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Maybe it’s a bad descriptor, but Berlin is just cool. I think the majority of the world’s leather jackets and Dr. Martins belong to this city.
We have done so much exploring since getting here! We have seen the TV tower (but I’m pretty sure it’s the space needle), gotten Döner im brot (successfully ordered in German), been to the zoo, the planetarium, and seen the Festival of Lights!

The Festival of Lights is an event where people from all over the world come to see digital art projected onto some of Berlin’s most recognizable buildings! The show brings out street food vendors, performers, and so much more! The second of the two series photos showing this is the Humboldt University Law Library!

We have also been to many churches which were a central part to the peaceful protest movements that caused the take down of the Berlin Wall. The church pictured here after the Festival of Lights, is the Church of Reconciliation. Unfortunately, this church did not have the chance to help in the peace protests. It’s previous building stood on land which the East German government seized in order to build the Wall. The original church was in the middle of what was known as the “death strip,” and was then torn down for the sake of the border. The photo after the new church building shows lines on the ground where the walls of the church would have stood, and perpendicularly intersecting it are various lines of traps on the border to prevent attempts at crossing over the wall.

It has been amazing to see how this city has and is still working to reconcile with itself and it’s long, dark history. I am blessed to be studying here!

    Richmond

    October 6, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Friday was out last full day in London, and boy was it a full one!

In the morning I set out on a solo adventure to the home of Ted Lasso himself, Richmond! I enjoyed a pastry and a coffee on the Richmond Green!

Next, Halle, Sarah and I went to Notting Hill and had lunch at a cook book shop/test kitchen (£7 for 3 courses)!

Lastly, Tyler and I visited the Abbey Road Studio’s, where countless amazing albums have been recorded, including the Beatles famed album named after the road itself!

What a lovely way to wrap up our time in London, and now, we are on to Berlin!

    Just Brilliant

    October 5, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

This past week has been full of adventures!

I saw Grease the Musical, we ate bravely (eel, quail, a mystery meal at the Cook Book shop/test kitchen), we visited the Liverpool Street station to learn about the Kindertransport, I climbed in a castle, rode bikes along the river, and costed the famous Notting Hill Book Shop!

We also visited Coventry Cathedral, a place bombed in the Blitz of WWII. This church decided to start the “Community of the Cross of Nails,” an international organization dedicated to reconciliation and forgiveness (a challenging thing after being bombed). This group is still partner cities with Dresden, Germany, which was also heavily bombed.

Sorry for the backlog! It’s been a crazy busy and crazy fun time here!

    oi, London pri-ee noice in’it!

    September 27, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

This week has been incredible and non-stop, so I am going to do some bullet points:

    • Big Ben is pretty big
    • Blueberry Danish with crème
    • Ed Sheeran’s restaurant, Bertie Blossoms (see the Burrata)
    • The Imperial War Museum (featuring a Dutch army helmet!)
    • The Globe Theatre
    • Unauthorized private Banksy Collection
    • The Gunner Pub (“what do we think of Tottenham? … 💩!”)
    • Harry Potter Statue
    • Covent Garden

London is such a fun and lively city, it is so accessible, and there are so many wonderful things to see! If only the underground tube wasn’t one million degrees (yes, in Celsius)…
