    I'm only here for 1 day so sorting out my itinerary hasn't been complex. 2 iconic sights conveniently located next to each other. I'd never felt any interest in seeing Sydney Opera House, so what a revelation today has been. It really is astonishing. Utterly captivating architecture and not at all the shape I thought it was - how amazing is that! I'm deliberately not posting some pics.

    This afternoon I took a fast ferry out to Manly and after a bit of a wander around found myself in the very agreeable 4 Pines micro brewery 🙄

    Happy Hour Dinner

    Dining at Buckley's. How about that view?

    Dinner was quite yummy, and you don't have to just take our word for it. I got a few bites into my Beef Ragu when I decided to get a refill of my water.

    When I returned, some 45 seconds later, they were taking my plate away. Turned out while I was gone, some seagulls swooped in and tried to make off with my meal. Brenda wasn't able to protect it, but she did manage to make sure they didn't take any of her Butter Chicken and Nan.

    The waitress was kind enough to bring me a replacement meal and I made sure I got all of that one.

    Even though they were pesky, the seagulls sure look good in Brenda's picture! :-)

    Wiedersehen mit Bekannten aus Peru

    Mein letzter Abend in Australien wurde toll genutzt. Ich habe ehemalige Mitreisende meiner Peru Tour wieder getroffen und wir hatten einen lustigen Abend mit gemütlichen Abendessen und Cocktails in einer Skybar.

    Bummel durch Sydney (2)

    Durch den Botanischen Garten kommen wir nun zum berühmten Opernhaus.
    Die ganze Gegend, inklusive Oper, steht schon im Zeichen des bevorstehenden New Years Eve. Absperrgitter stehen bereit, Imbisswagen und Toiletten. Und es wimmelt von Menschen auf der Suche nach dem ultimativen Feuerwerksblick, wir hören mal wieder viel deutsch. Insgesamt herrscht aber eine unheimlich entspannte Atmosphäre, wir haben das Gefühl, alle lassen sich treiben.
    Wir besorgen unsere Eintrittskarten für die Silvestergala und erfahren hier endgültig, das wir das Feuerwerk von der Terrasse aus sehen werden (war uns bisher nicht so klar). Juchhu - wir sind glücklich und nun alle Stellplatzsorgen los!
    Wir gönnen uns eine Pizza und lassen uns treiben bis Circular Quay.

    Sydney's Wahrzeichen

    Nachdem wir heute zuerst 2 Touren und einen Fallschirmsprung gebucht hatten, haben wir uns nochmal etwas näher zu den Wahrzeichen Sydney's begeben.

    Es war gut etwas los beim Opera House und der Harbour Bridge.

    Anschließend ging es dann noch in den Sydney Tower welcher einen Rundumblick über Sydney bescherte, allerdings nicht empfehlenswert ist. 😂Read more

    For the foodies

    It was a very wet day here today. After a late start I went down to Circular Quay and looked around The Rocks. I always try to have one “nice”meal out when I go somewhere new so several months ago when starting to plan my trip I was told by a couple of people at work I had to go to Quay Restaurant and have the snow egg. So I made a booking for lunch today and I wasn’t disappointed.
    Even though there was a cruis ship in that obscured the Opera House I still had a good view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

    I didn’t get a photo and of the amuse bouche of creme fraiche, fish eggs and something crunchy, I forget what. Then came a sourdough spelt roll with butter and salt. I’d never have thought to add salt to bread and butter but it was delicious.

    First course was raw smoked wagyu, fermented chilli, miso, shaved fungi, kombu, cultured cream, dory roe.
    This was delicious, not to spicy and the texture of the beef only just raw.

    Second course was uni, koshihikari rice, cured egg yolk, fish maw, day lily, ama ebi, umami broth. I’ll be honest, apart from the umami broth I had no idea what any of the ingredients were. I could decide between the options so went for the one that would have the new ingredients.
    This was my favourite course. One of those ingredients was a prawn style seafood, all the textures went so well together. The ingredients on there own weren’t all that great but all together it was sooo good.

    Third course was roasted master stock duck, house made koji paste, hatsuka radish, ice plant, orach. This was my least favourite course, there was nothing wrong with it, it just didn’t have the wow factor of the other courses.

    Final course was the snow egg. They change the flavour with the seasons and it is currently strawberry. Strawberry chantilly cream, strawberry granita, meringue ball with strawberry ice cream in the middle and hard outer shell. This too was amazing. Again all the different textures together is what made it so great.

    After that all I wanted to do was go back to the hotel and sleep! Instead I briefly considered a harbour tour but it really isn’t the weather for it so I went to the Hyde Park Barracks instead. The museum focussed a bit more on the history of the actual building that of the people who resided there but it was still interesting.
    I won’t be cooking tonight after that lunch a bath and then bed I think.

    Chinese New Year

    Das chinesische Neujahr wird vom 16. Februar bis am 4. März gefeiert und dieses Jahr steht im Zeichen des Hundes. Zur Feier hat Sydney dementsprechend seine Dekoration und die Belichtung im Circular Quay angepasst.
