      Auer Dult

      This was our last day in Munich. It was very chilly but we still enjoyed the city. The first pic is of one of the old gateways into the city. As you walk through, you enter the pedestrian shopping area which is about 3/4 of a mile long. It’s actually been disappointing to see that Germany is losing its uniqueness and you see American stores and things everywhere.
      Pic 2 is a fun view of the Frauenkirche that I showed you yesterday. Pic 3 is of the Bavarian courthouse.
      In the afternoon we went to the Auer Dult. It’s a housewares market and also a carnival for the kids. It takes place 3 times a year. I remember going there so was excited when I saw an ad for it! The rest of the pics are from there. As you can see, they sell everything imaginable. It was fun just to wander around.
      Our month long vacation has come to an end. Thanks for hanging in there with me as I journaled our travels. It’s been a good mixture of memories, vacation and seeing special family and friends. But I must admit, now we are ready to come home!!

      München

      I got to tour Dachau this morning....there are really no words that can describe the 3.5 hours I spent there. Our guide was incredible and I learned a lot that was never taught in school.

      My friends and I opted for a relaxing afternoon considering our morning. We took the tram to Nymphenburg Palace and walked the gardens for a few hours, which were absolutely beautiful.

      We took the tram back to the city center where I met two friends from home for dinner and beers. I will miss the Augustiner Helles.

      München Altstadt, Eisbach 👍

      Dernière journée complète de vacances à München Altstadt (vieille ville) sous un soleil de plomb.

      Matinée : café chez Ricardt près de la cathédrale Frauenkirche, puis église St Michael, cathédrale, retour à la superbe Marienplatz, découverte intérieure de la mairie Rathaus qui fait toute la beauté de la place, puis Viktualienmarkt (marché des victuailles) effectivement très sympa avec ces grands kiosques en dur et toutes ses tables qui accueillent énormément de Munichois et touristes à longueur de journée.

      Pause déj dans la plus vieille brasserie de München : Hofbrau (HB) sous des voûtes très baroques, accompagnés d'un orchestre de musique bavaroise. Mention spéciale pour leurs Bretzel XL délicieux et leur Kaiserschmarrn caramélisé accompagné de compote de pommes. Pas de chope de bière Hofbrau en dessous d'1L. Mais il faisait très chaud, il fallait s'hydrater 😉😂 très bonne ambiance et service très sympa !

      Puis nous sommes passés voir la Residenz, résidence des monarques bavarois du 14e siècle au 20e siècle. Très déçus par l'aspect extérieur trop "sobre" presque caserne militaire d'autant plus qu'elle était en chantier au niveau de sa cour centrale.

      Nous avions trop chaud pour continuer à arpenter les rues en plein soleil avec 34 degrés et avons juste traversé la rue pour nous rendre dans le jardin de la Residenz : le Hofgarten et son joli pavillon /temple dédié à Diane.
      Il y faisait un poil plus frais mais encore très chaud, nous avons décidé d'un moment de pause dans les jardins de l'Englischer Garten attenant au bord de la rivière Isar pour y trouver un peu plus de fraîcheur. Et, tant qu'à faire, voir si nous pouvions y admirer les surfeurs de la vague Eisbach, un bras de l'Isar 😁
      Pas déçus 👍 autant la vague sur l'Eisbach en sortie de pont, que le nombre de surfeurs qui s'y entraînent également, attendant patiemment chacun leur tour, sont impressionnants. Le camion de pompier est présent en permanence ...
      Mais encore plus délirant et on a adoré, à quelques mètres, des Munichois en maillots de bain, qui se jettent de part et d'autre de la berge dans le courant de la rivière et se laissent emporter sur quelques mètres pour remonter quelques mètres plus loin, en pleine ville et cela semble une institution 👍😁

      Tom et Pierre-Louis s'y sont essayés, sans maillot de bain mais peu importe, ils y sont retournés et retournés, bien rafraichis ! Nous avons passé l'après midi jusque 17h30 sur les bords de l'Isar à nous régaler du spectacle de ces plongeons permanents 👍

      Puis, déjà nos petites habitudes, nous avons fini notre périple par une soirée au même endroit que là où nous l'avions commencé et qui résume tellement bien ce que nous avons aimé dans ce séjour : au Biergarten de la brasserie Augustiner 😍
      Un bout de nature, un lieu de convivialité, sans chichis, avec une bonne musique bavaroise d'ambiance dont cet accueillant "Ein Prosit ein Prosit🎶", où tout ce qui compte est d'arrêter un peu le temps et de passer un bon moment de découvertes ensemble tous les 4 ❤️❤️❤️❤️

      Jour 2 - Visite de Munich

      Aujourd’hui, nous avons visité Munich à pied et à vélo ✌🏼
      Nous avons débuté la journée par le parc olympique de Munich où ont eu lieu les Jo 1972. Nous avons fait une balade à pied sur les berges puis avons monté la colline qui surplombe le parc et la ville de Munich.
      Nous avons ensuite pic-niqué au bord du lac du parc olympique un des meilleurs Doner Kebab de Munich (verdict : excellent 😋)

      Nous avons ensuite passé l’après midi à parcourir la ville à vélo et nous sommes arrêtés en fin de journée au plus grand parc de la ville: l’Englisher Garten où l’on a pu voir des surfers et tremper les pieds dans l’eau.

      10km de marche et 20km de vélo pour notre dernier jour à Munich. Demain, nous traverserons la frontière direction Salzburg en Autriche ! 🇩🇪 > 🇦🇹      En savoir plus

      Meeting the Old Masters

      We planned to do some shopping today, so we started late - the shops don’t open till 10. We’re both feeling like a change of clothes, and I need to replace the strides left in Vancouver (now back in NZ), and maybe a jacket.
      But all the clothes I looked at were so expensive they made Rembrandt look like Farmers!

      So we settled for lunch and a return visit to the Frauenkirche, which made such an impact on us a couple of days ago.

      We decided to spend the afternoon at the Alte Pinakothek. This art gallery is home to one of the largest collections of European painting in the world. I had no idea there would be such an extraordinary number (700) and range of paintings, from late medieval to early 20th century.

      We were just blown away. Again and again Des would jump up and down, saying “I’ve got that picture in a book at home”, or come out (as you might perhaps have expected!) with some arcane but insightful comment about a Dürer, a Goya or a Rembrandt. She really has an extraordinary knowledge about many of these masters.

      We looked at maybe three quarters of the collection before our legs ran out. Coffee and home. I resisted the 2000 piece jigsaws in the gallery shop!

      Day 3 Munich- Salzburg delayed snow

      2 décembre 2023, Allemagne ⋅ ❄️ -2 °C

      Temperature: -2 at 9am/- 2 at 2 pm/ -3 at 4 pm.

      Due to the heavy snowfall, all transport has been cancelled. We were due to train from Munich to Salzburg this morning, but now we are due to depart by bus at 7 pm, fingers crossed.
      Michael chose to stay in the warm while I wanted to get out and enjoy the snow. Went back to the markets we went to yesterday. They look quite different with snow on them.

      Last Day in Vancouver

      Excellent breakfast again at Breka Café. This morning we were joined by a strange of man who shuffled between the tables muttering to himself in gibberish. He wasn’t harassing anyone so we avoided eye contact and he eventually toddled off.
      After having such a good time at Capilano the day before, we decided to focus on one destination rather than rush about (“aboot!”).
      Van Dusen Gardens, developed by enthusiasts over 60 years on the site of an old golf course (rather like Pukeiti) was supposed in the top 10 gardens of North America, so there we went.
      Wow! And again wow!. This is a stunner, and for anyone interested in gardens. Towering pines and majestic redwoods, one picturesque lake after another. Walked around for two hours, then hopped on the golf cart tour and saw some more. People as always in Canada very pleasant and welcoming.

      Dies Nefas! 3 May, Vancouver to Munich.

      The Romans were very superstitious. They believed that particular days were inherently lucky- Dies Fas- or unlucky (Dies Nefas). Any venture undertaken on such a day was bound to go awry.

      Our Lufthansa flight started well enough, with a fine modern Airbus 350-900. Wider seats and enough legroom to keep knees clear of the seat ahead.
      Unfortunately the plane was choko, with us in the central (claustrophobic) row. Alas too the temperature was set to poach the passengers rather than cool them. Wrapped up like a mummy, overheated, with selfish gits keeping their screens on full bore all night - and worst of all, a loud droning bore who carried on a loud monotone seemingly went on forever, meant I got no sleep at all, with Neil not much better.
      Finding the baggage carousel, then waiting for our bags, took almost an hour.
      I found a minimart inside the airport, bought some basics, took a (seedy ) taxi to the hotel, tottered jet-lagged inside, then discovered I had left the groceries in their black bag in the back of the taxi - which of course had shot through.
      Sigh. Worse was to come. When Neil finished unpacking he discovered-horror- that his best outfit in the black Rembrandt bag inside the poky black wardrobe had been left behind.
      Aargh! Rang the hotel in Vancouver found the suit holder. Negotiations in place to courier it back to NZ.

      Things looked up when we discovered a little Imbiss (fast food shop) down the road from our Munich hotel. Meals basic but cheap and filling. Next door was a REWE supermarket. Replaced what we had lost with better quality.
      Here’s hoping tomorrow goes better. Hop-on, hop-off bus tour of Munich.
      Concierge very helpful. Bed looking pretty good right now.

      Munich farewell: house and gardens

      Mothers’s Day today! Started with a first-class breakfast at the hotel.
      Then as I took it easy, Neil fulfilled his long-held ambition to visit the site where his great-grandparents lived, Nymphenbergerstrasse 58. Unsurprisingly the original building was gone (90% of central Munich was destroyed during WW II) but he did find the address, now an Apotheke (Chemist). It meant a lot to him to tounch base with his family’s history after 158 years.
      It was another glorious spring day, so we took Mike’s advice and visited the Englischer Garden, created by Englishman Sir Benjamin Thompson in 1789. This huge inner-city park, 375 hectares, has 78 km of paths, surfingon an artificial wave, boats on the lake, a riding school, Beergardens, landmarks like the Chinese Tower, and thousands of majestic mature trees, all in vivid spring green. Thousands of families, hundreds of small dogs, bikes in every conceivable size and shape, people everywhere quietly enjoying themselves.
      The helpful concierge had given us the number for our bus, which took us back to our hotel.
      A lovely balmy afternoon, and an appropriate end to our stay in this beautiful city.

      Unterwegs wie die Nomaden

      Gar nicht so einfach, wenn man in D ist und dort kein Zuhause mehr hat 😳
      Und so tingeln wir quer durch Deutschland nach Ratzeburg und Hamburg und feiern zusammen Charlottes und Matthäus Hochzeit 👩‍❤️‍👨💍✨🎊.

      Von dort weiter nach Amsterdam 🚌 und mit den 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️ zwei Wochen durch Holland und die Niederlanden. Zurück in abwechselnd München und Otterfing ins Open-Air-Kino🌜Biergarten 🍻🥨 Olympiapark 🏃🏼‍♂️ Reiten 🏇 und Baggersee in Wessling 🏖 Kino für uns alleine 😂 Freunde treffen ....

      Schließlich landen wir am geliebten Schliersee ⛰🏖 und verbringen dort die letzten zwei Wochen in D mit der Eriba-Kugel und Zelt 🏕 in erster Reihe am Wasser...      En savoir plus

      LEBENSZEICHEN 😵‍💫

      Nach langer Funkstille endlich mal wieder ein Lebenszeichen🫀💥
      Meine letzten 5 Monate nach meinem letzten Post habe ich so einiges erlebt, wo soll ich da nur anfangen!? Ich versuche mich auf die Highlights zu fokussieren 🤪 Nachdem Laura nach einer Woche Verlängerung uns wieder verlassen hatte 🥲 ging es nicht mehr lange und neuer Besuch stand vor der Tür.
      Mein über alles geliebter Steve aka Lizzy mit Maurice und Völler im Schlepptau hatten sich dafür entschieden mit mir 2 Wochen Mexiko zu erkunden. Unsere Route war folgende: ein paar Tage México City, Cancun, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox 🌴 wir hatten wunderbare Tage gemeinsam und mein absoluter Favorit ist und bleibt Holbox, wow selten sowas schönes gesehen! Zum Abschluss gabs noch ne Runde Xochimilco und am Abreisetag vom Holländer und Co, war die Stimmung eher mäßig gut. Aber nicht lange und der nächste Besuch aus der Heimat hat sich angekündigt, Maike und Julian waren im Anflug 😍
      Auch mit Ihnen hatten wir tolle und unbeschreiblich witzige Tage in Mex City 🥳 ich würde sagen der Activity Abend war unschlagbar. Die Arbeit an der Schule macht mir weiterhin sehr viel Spaß und nach Parasiten im Bauch und ner Runde Covid bin ich auch wieder vollstens hergestellt um jetzt nen mega Sommer in Deutschland mit Family und Friends zu erleben 💃🏼☀️ ich werde meinen Aufenthalt in Mexiko verlängern und Ende August wieder zurückfliegen.

      Eine letzte lustige Story zum Schluß: Freitag nach meinem letzten Arbeitstag, nahm ich mir ein Uber zurück von der Schule, das Kennzeichen war NPG-516 ein blauer Nissan. Ok, Nachricht erhalten mein Uber steht bereit, ich einen blauen Nissan mit NPG Nummernschild gesehen und hinten eingestiegen bis die Fahrerin mich völlig aufgelöst anschaut und mir sagt sie sei kein Uber sie wartet nur auf ihr Kind 😵‍💫 ich mit hochrotem Kopf ganz elegant Bein für Bein wieder aus dem Auto ausgestiegen und mich 1000 Mal entschuldigt haha. Es hat fast alles gepasst blauer Nissan, NPG aber leider war die Nummer nicht 516 sondern 615 🥹 nunja ich hab dann noch das richtige erwischt und die Frau wahrscheinlich zu Tode erschreckt 😂

      Mit 10 Kg Übergewicht - auch im Koffer geht’s jetzt zurück nach DE ☀️
      Noch 6h vor mir bis zur Ankunft in Frankfurt 🙏
