      Floating Village

      We took a sampan ride through the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, a part of Hong Kong famous for floating seafood restaurants in a harbor protected from heavy storms.

      A cluster of fishing boats moor together here, as well, creating a floating village. These days only 200 or so people live there, but the number used to be much higher.Read more

      Day 9. Sunday 19th Nov

      Lazy morning for the support crew!
      Dave your Dad was delegated to settling you while your Mum Lucy got a bit of sleep.
      Grandparents went for a long walk up to the windmill! Weather lovely. We stayed in the shade as much as possible. Not too many people around. The pagoda is a nice spot. The view from there is over to Aberdeen where your parents' Lamma office is.
      Regrouped at about 12md. We bought a fillet of beef for about 360 Hk $ for dinner (half for the freezer). Dusty, you were up and down all afternoon; mostly up🙂
      You loved your time kicking on the nappy changing pad. You also loved Louise Illingworth's Rupert Bear that she had knitted for you.
      Grandad Euan & your Mum spent time trying to fix some ‘Ikea drawers, and Grandma Trish and your Mum tried to sort the clothes( that you no longer fit) out into bags, to be passed on to others in the Lamma Mamas group.
      We had a lovely long chat with Cecily Munro and caught up with all the Munro news. David Munro got to see you too, (via Messenger).
      You were such a considerate baby this evening. Your Mum even got to eat dinner without interruption! Your Dad cooked it perfectly on the BBQ. Both your parents are very good cooks, so you have a lot to look forward to when you get to solids!
      We are trying for an earlier night tonight. You dad has work in the Aberdeen Office tomorrow.      Read more

      Day 15, 25th Nov. 2023

      Saturday am and a relaxed weekend day. We woke fairly early, lazed around the office having a leisurely breakfast and sitting in the roof balcony. Lucy & Dave were having a much needed slow time. Dusty, you are the quintessential non morning person; no actively, then come afternoon, and frequently at night, it’s all on! Today was no exception. The plan was for you and your Mum & Dad to come up to the office, but you slept, 💤. I had a lovely chat to Gill Salt in Bannockburn and eventually the Lammna Cassells family arrived. We went for walk up to the community garden at Tai Peng, looking across to Yung Shue Wong Village, up to the ridge, not far from the windmill.
      Remind me never to complain about gardening in Palmie, ever again. Apart from marauding wild pigs, no water source close by, very sandy soil, rampant growth, typhoons etc, what’s not to like about gardening on Lamma?
      It was a lovely walk. You were in the front pack with your Dad, but both of you were a bit too warm. We stopped off for an ice cream on the way home.
      We returned to 93 Po Wah Yuen where, once you were set free you were in high spirits. We gave you a bath and you rewarded us ( especially your Mum) with beautiful smiles! The best yet!!! Then you reverted to your afternoon self🙂. About 15 attempts at putting you down so your Mum could get some sleep failed dismally. Your Dad got about an hours sleep!
      Grandad was busy sorting out the mirror hanging for the bathroom. It’s now in place and looking good. Off you all went to friends place for an early dinner. You Mum looks as though she will be asleep the moment she sits down!
      Grandad & I went to the Thai restaurant at the base of the steps into the village. We tried the pomelo salad and shrimps. We asked for it to not have chilli, but that was never going to happen! The following chicken was ok, but a tiny portion. The glutinous rice was just one big clump, but placed on a
      banana skin. I did enjoy the fresh coconut. I wished I could scrape out the coconut flesh though!
      Back home to the office after some minor purchases in the village. We had toast & jam (using the new toaster) followed by almond croissants and a cuppa! Excellent. Another day with you and your first real smiles. What bliss.      Read more

      Day 17. 27 th Nov

      Today was predictably the opposite of yesterday. We stayed at home to give Lucy and Dusty a rest from yesterday’s ups and downs.
      It seem to work. Dusty and Mum had two sleeps in the morning. It was 25c and felt very hot.
      I started cleaning out the pot plant collection on your lovely roof, by shifting them out from the balcony wall and throwing the broken pots away and scrubbing the tiles. It was so hot on the roof I had to leave some for later, but the mosquitoes caught up with me then. Tomorrow I will get potting soil and bamboo stakes to support some of the plants.
      Dusty, you were a treasure all day! We had lovely times as you tried out your bouncer for awhile, and you loved your bath again today. What a sweetheart. You did lots of feeding and exercise, so all together a lovely day. Thanks Dusty.      Read more

      HKG Tag 1: Tempel und Kowloon

      Heute Morgen habe ich aus dem Mahjong Hostel ausgecheckt und bin etwas nördlich zum Nan Lian Garden gefahren. Dort war ich etwas spazieren und habe mir auch die Chi Lin Nunnery angeschaut. Danach war ich noch beim Wong Tai Sin Temple. Hier war es super voll und viele haben mit Räucherstäbchen gebetet. Da merkt man erstmal wie wenig man über die Religion weiß.
      Anschließend habe ich im Hop Inn Hostel eingecheckt, wo ich für die restlichen Tage bleiben werde. Das Hostel ist sehr zentral in Tsim Sha Tsui (südlicher Teil von Kowloon) gelegen, sehr praktisch.
      Ich bin am Nachmittag noch etwas an der Promenade entlang gelaufen, wo auch die Avenue of Stars ist, die Hong Kong Variante des Walk of Fame. Bis auf Bruce Lee kannte ich allerdings niemanden.😅
      Danach habe ich mich mit Jeffrey, seiner Freundin Kishi und der Tochter Claire zum Essen getroffen. Ich kenne sie über Couchsurfing. Eigentlich wollte ich erst bei ihnen übernachten, aber habe mich dann doch entschlossen im Hostel zu bleiben. Daher haben wir uns nun nur zum Essen getroffen. Sie haben mich ins Haidilao Hot Pot Restaurant eingeladen, eine sehr bekannte chinesische Kette. Das Essen war echt lecker und ich habe super viele neue Dinge probiert, unter anderem irgendwelche Schwammpilze und Schweineinnereien.😅 Hat eigentlich alles ganz gut geschmeckt. Danach war ich aber auch pappsatt! Sie haben mir dann noch ein Kaufhaus gezeigt, wo es nur Läden mit (asiatischer) Popkultur gibt, zum Beispiel Kuscheltiere, Videospiele und sonstigen Kram. Ich kannte nur die amerikanischen Figuren. Auch hier habe ich wieder gemerkt, wie wenig wir von der asiatischen Kultur mitbekommen, vor allem was Musik- und Filmszenen angeht. Kishi hat mich dann noch gefragt, worauf man achten sollte, wenn man nach Deutschland kommt und was typisch deutsch ist. Die Frage finde ich immer schwer zu beantworten.😅 Ich habe dann gesagt, dass wir keinen Smalltalk machen.
      Danach bin ich zurück ins Hostel und totmüde ins Bett gefallen.      Read more

      Another big morning out in Central for the Grand Parents with Lucy & Dusty. We took the 0930 ferry. Your Mum had been busy trying to coordinate the collection of the Christmas Tree. Yes, of course it’s a ‘real’ one in a stand. We always had a 'real' one on Palmerston North till your Mum went to Wellington when we slackened our standards and bought a large artificial one.
      The tree arrived so now they have the record player in boxes, ready to be put in the already assembled shelves, and space to be made for the tree! I think that you will enjoy it as much as your Mum. Next year may be a different scenario🤣. The Grandparents walked you around the block for 45 mins. We pulled the pin on shopping on Pottinger Lane for Christmas decorations as you had had enough in the front pack. The afternoon heralded the introduction of a new sleep regimen! Your Mum has an app. with lots of good suggestions. 🤞well and truly crossed that this gives you more settled sleep. The Grandparents finished the re-potting of pot plants. Nice dinner of U.S.A. salmon. You were actually asleep when we left at 2000😘      Read more

      HKG Tag 3: Dim Sum, Market und Lightshow

      Heute Morgen bin ich zusammen mit Deborah und Jeongbin aus meinem Hostel zusammen Dim Sum Essen gegangen, ein typisch asiatisches Frühstück. Dabei wählt man sich von der Karte verschiedene kleine Dinge aus, meist Dumplings aller Art, ähnlich wie bei Tapas. Das war mega lecker, und wir waren auch echt satt danach.😅
      Danach war ich beim Friseur und habe meinen Undercut neu machen lassen.🤗

      Am Nachmittag habe ich im Hostel entspannt, man kann ja auch nicht dauerhaft unterwegs sein…

      Abends bin ich zusammen mit Deborah, Brooke und Chelsea zum Temple Street Night Market gegangen. Deborah kennt die beiden von ihrer China-Reisegruppe. Dort haben wir auch zu Abend gegessen. Anschließen haben wir uns noch einen Bubble Tea geholt und sind gemeinsam zum Victoria Harbour gelaufen. Dort findet im 20:00 Uhr immer die Lightshow von den Gebäuden in Central statt. Die Skyline war aber wie immer schon vor der Lightshow „Symphony of Lights“ sehr beeindruckend, da haben die paar mehr Lichter auch keinen großen Unterschied mehr gemacht. Wir sind dann gemeinsam wieder nach Kawloon reingelaufen und haben uns auf die verschiedenen Hostels aufgeteilt.      Read more

      Day 25, 5th Dec. Last Day of our visit

      December 4, 2023 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

      Would you believe it, you, Dusty had a sleepy morning. We could have done with some fore-warning, but no complaints. Even your Mum got a wee sleep. Grandad Euan removed the shower door to try and investigate its faults, while Grandma Trish came to grips with making your Dad’s ‘Signature’ dish, Chicken Pie, a la Jamie Oliver, plus a huge batch of Chicken Marbella, (some to freeze). Dusty, you slept on and woke up a bit ‘hung-over’. The later afternoon was taken up feeding, diverting and generally amusing yours truly. The Chicken Pie, cabbage & sweet potato was a hit with the support crew!
      There were enough ingredients for another pie for the freezer. We walked home and started quietly and sadly packing up for the trip home to NZ. More cups of tea & chocolate, and wishing so much that our flight wasn't until Jocelyn started work on the next Monday.      Read more

      HKG Letzter Tag: Lantau Island

      Heute Morgen habe ich meine Sachen gepackt, habe im Apple Store noch kurz etwas umgetauscht und bin dann mit meinem ganzen Gepäck nach Lantau Island gefahren. Dort konnte ich das Gepäck bei einem Hotel abgeben und habe mich dann mit einem Kumpel getroffen.
      Zusammen haben wir eine Wanderung entlang der Nordseite der Insel gemacht, bis wir am Nachmittag in Tai O angekommen, einem kleinen Fischerdorf, wo die Häuser auf Stelzen am Fluss stehen. In einem Café haben wir Nudelsuppe gegessen und die Aussicht genossen.
      Als es dunkel war, sind wir dann mit dem Bus zurück, da die Fähre irgendwie nicht gekommen ist, eigentlich untypisch für Hong Kong, der ÖPNV ist hier super ausgebaut und sehr zuverlässig.
      Im Hotel hab ich dann meine Sachen wieder eingesammelt und wir sind mit dem Bus zum Flughafen gefahren. Dort haben wir uns nach dem Check In dann verabschiedet. Es gab noch etwas Probleme mit meiner Gitarre, die sie erst nicht fürs Handgepäck zulassen wollten, aber dann ging es irgendwann doch, zum Glück!😅
      Ich fliege mit Cathay Pacific nach Zürich und dann weiter mit Swiss Air nach Hamburg.
      Jetzt sitze ich am Gate und warte aufs Boarding, und dann bin ich bald schon zu Hause!      Read more
