      הביקור במוזיאון צ'יצ'ו המהמם שעיצב האדריכל אנדו היה מרשים, אבל הצילום בו היה אסור. עיצוב מינימליסטי ומגלומני בעת ובעונה אחת. ניקיון ועוצמה שהותירו בנו רושם עז. אחריו ביקרנו בגלריה של האומן סוגימוטו. משחק מקסים בין פנים וחוץ ופסלים בעשב המתנופף ברוח אל מול אדוות הים.

      טאקאמאטסו - שעות אחרונות באי שיקוקו

      לאחר יום מלא באומנות וארכיטקטורה נהדרת באי נאושימה חזרנו שוב לטאקאמאטסו ובבוקר, לפני המסע להוקאיידו הספקנו לבקר בגן מעורר השראה שהעיר מתהדרת בו.
      עוד בבוקר, אורית הגיע אל הגן בריצה, וכשוחרת ריצה בגינות וגנים נכנסה אל הגן בסערה. השומר עצר אותה ובפנטומימה מתקדמת הסביר לה שבגן הזה לא רצים.
      אז הגענו שוב. הפעם הולכים.

      שודושימה

      שתי קילומטר ברגל לסיפון ואנחנו עולים על מעבורת שתיקח אותנו כל הדרך לשודושימה.
      ערב קודם, ישבנו מול יוטיוב בטלוויזיה וראינו סרטון של איזה קנדי שמטייל ביפן והדליק אותנו על האי והאטרקציות שנעשה בו.
      שלוש שעות במעבורת אולד פשיין, מתפננים בשמש על הגג ואוכלים אודון.

      תחנה ראשונה בשודו, מפעל לייצור רוטב סויה.
      הגענו עם טרמפ מנהג מלון סמוך ונכנסנו למוזיאון. קיבלנו סויה בחינם עם התשלום כניסה ועוד הנחה על הגלידת רוטב סויה שנקנה אחרכ בחנות.
      היה סיבוב חמוד, גלידה קצת כמו כרמל מלוח ומשם המשכנו בעוד טרמפ עם זוג צעיר שבא לחופשה לאנג'ל רוד.

      רצועת חול שמחברת בין מהחוף לעוד אי קטן אבל מסתבר שהיא נוצרת רק בשפל ואנחנו מגיעים בכלל בגאות.
      שקיעה יפה, קניות לארוחת ערב (יין, לחם, גבנצ, טופו בר שהפך להיות החיים, סלט ירוק משקית, קטשופ וחרדל) ובוקר (מוזלי בקבוע) בסבן והמשכנו עם עוד טרמפ מוצלח כל הדרך למתחם הקמפינג שלנו ללילה.

      הגענו אחרי הצ'קאין אז נעזרנו ביפני שיטלפן לבעלים ופתחנו את האוהל בחלקת דשא במיוחד לנו. סופסוף לא קר מדי, אנחנו מתפנקים במקלחת מטבע (100 יין לחמש דקות), בסנדוויצ'ים מסודרים לגובה ויין.

      Whirlpools and bridges and gardens

      We drove to Naruto Strait, and toured the Naruto whirlpools. These tidal whirlpools, created by the fast tidal current, can measure up to about 20 metres in diameter. Interesting, but not really worth the boat ride to look at them.

      We headed to Takamatsu and visited the open-air museum of Shikoku Mura for a glimpse of old village life. Over 20 restored traditional buildings and structures were relocated here from all over the island and includes farmhouses, storehouses, production workshops for soy sauce and sugar, a thatched kabuki theatre and a vine suspension bridge. The bridge looks terribly unsafe and you will see the photos of me hanging on for grim death. Enjoyed this visit though would have liked to have spent a bit longer.

      Then we visited the Ritsurin Garden, an exquisite traditional garden– it’s a National Treasure and arguably one of the most beautiful gardens in the country (at least that is what the brochure says). I loved this garden, very peaceful. Unfortunately we arrived a little late in the day and we lost a lot of the sunlight, Also, the autumn colours will be better in 2-3 weeks.      Read more

      Konpira-san

      Morgens noch ein angenehmes Frühstück mit Plaudern im Hostel, dann mache ich mich auf den Weg. Heute sind es nur 35 km bis Kotuhira. Es geht wieder immer an der Straße lang, teils Gehweg, teils Radweg, teils Straße. Ich werde mich dran gewöhnen müssen.
      Gegen 12 bin ich schon da. Ich werfe nur schnell mein Gepäck im Hotel ab, dann fahre ich zum Konpira-san. Das ist ein Komplex von shintoistischen Schreinen, der sich von der Stadt aus den Berg hinauf zieht. Es sind schöne, ruhige, spirituelle Orte, deren Bedeutung sich dem hergelaufenen Westler jedoch nicht leicht erschließt. Nach 1.368 Stufen (offizielle Zählung) hat man den obersten erreicht.
      In meinem Hotel hilft mir der Google Übersetzer, einzuchecken. Dann kann ich die Füße hochlegen und meine gequälten Knie pflegen.      Read more

      Ritsurin-Koen

      We verblijven een paar dagen in Takamatsu om rustig te werken voordat we doorgaan naar het hart van Japan. Er zijn hier precies twee dingen de moeite waard: de udon en het park: Ritsurin-Koen. Dinsdagochtend besluit ik die tweede maar te bezoeken. Paar honderd yen entree heb ik voor een park niet eerder gezien, maar prima. Dit schijnt ook wel een van de beste parken van Japan te zijn. Hij wordt vaak vergeleken met de grote drie in Kanazawa, Okayama en Mito respectievelijk.

      Het valt meteen al in de smaak met mooi gecultiveerde Japanse dennen (foto 1). Dat is ook verreweg de meest voorkomende soort in het park. Ik stap aan het begin nog even een soort museumpje in, die ingaat op de geschiedenis van udon in Kagawa-ken, de provincie op Shikoku waarvan Takamatsu de hoofdstad is, en hoe het de nummer één udon-producent van Japan is. Natuurlijk is er weer een vergezochte claim dat de alleskunnende monnik Kūkai udon uit China naar Shikoku heeft gebracht. Op de bovenverdieping is een verzameling meubilair van een Japans-Amerikaanse meubelmaker (foto 3). Mooi werk. Hierna kom ik de beroemdste boom van het park tegen. Een stevige, wijd uitwaaiende den van nog geen twee meter hoog. Een uit de kluiten gewassen Bonsai, kun je rustig zeggen. Het zou de vorm van een opstijgende kraanvogel moeten hebben, wat ik niet helemaal zie, maar de boom is desalniettemin prachtig (foto's 4 en 5). Verder loop ik wel twee uur door het park te slenteren, te genieten van de variëteit aan uitzichten, paadjes, herfstkleuren, steenarrangementen en natuurlijk kooikarpers. Blader zelf maar door de foto's, ik ga er niet meer over vertellen. Ik sluit af met een bezoekje aan een verstopt dakpannenmuseumpje (foto 20). En loop dan naar een postkantoor om in mijn beste Japans twee dozen te bestellen om de motorhelmen en wat andere zooi alvast terug naar huis te sturen. Later blijkt dat genoeg ruimte te besparen dat ik mijn kleine koffer in mijn grote kan stoppen en de kapotte middelgrote kan weggooien. In één keer van 3 naar 1 koffer meezeulen gegaan. Tsjakka.       Kotohira

      We took a local train from Takamatsu to Kotohira, staying on the Park Hotel,
      In the morning, we visited Kanamaru-Za, the oldest extant Kabuki theatre in Japan dating from 1835 to provide entertainment for pilgrims to the Kotohira-gu shrine. There are rare performances now. We walked under the stage and saw the equipment for the revolving stage which would be operated manually.
      Some of us climbed the 1368 steps to the Okusha Shrine near the top of Mt. Zozu at 521m. The walk was very steep but there was a great view of Kotohira and the surrounding countryside. On the way down, I stopped for lunch at a posh cafe.
      Continuing my descent, at Omote Shoin, there were 90 painted door panels, some from the Edo period, with cranes, tigers and Mt. Fuji amongst the scenes, plus a garden. There was only one other visitor at this Important Cultural Property.
      I visited an art gallery and then the Homotsu-kau Museum with lots of wall paintings, Samurai headwear, and statues.
      I couldn't find another museum so I walked back to town down a rarely-used path in a forest of very tall and straight cedar trees. To end the walk, I visited the covered bridge over river.

      Naoshima

      On a sunny and hot day, we left the hotel at 07.30 by taxi for the ferry port to catch the 08.00 ferry for the hour's ride to the island of Naoshima. Some of the group hired bikes but I walked around the island, visiting various art installations. The first was the Ando Museum and the Community Centre in the Honmura District with their distinctive architecture.
      The Benesse House Museum adjoining a hotel was on a cliff with some Hockneys amongst the paintings, and art objects on the ground near the landing stage.
      The Lee Ufan Museum and Valley Gallery had 88 buddhas in a field plus reflective silver balls in the Narcissus Garden, both very attractive.
      The Chichu Art Museum, in a brutalist style with lots of concrete, had Monets plus the illusion of an infinite staircase.
      There were public sculptures dotted around the island such as the Pumpkin.
      The quiet walk took me past deserted beaches and probably a warm sea.
      The island had been dedicated to art, partly to give it a purpose, with young people leaving for the greater opportunities in the cities.
      With time to spare before the next ferry, I went to the Public Bath which was itself a work of art.
      The 17.00 ferry took us back to Takamatsu. We went to a sushi and fish restaurant for dinner.      Read more

      Takamatsu

      I forwarded my large holdall to Matsuyama and just took the small holdall and backpack to Takamatsu.
      Leaving the hotel at 10.50, we took the metro to Shin Osaka Station. "Shin" means "new". When the Shinkansen was being built, there wasn't room for the rail tracks to go into the centre of some cities so stations, such as Shin Osaka, were built on the outskirts.
      We took the Shinkansen for an hour hour to Otayama, and then the bottom tier of a two-tier local train to Takamatsu for one hour, crossing the Seto Inland Sea, dotted with small islands, on a spectacular bridge from Honshu to Shikoku. We went to the Tokyu Rei Hotel by taxi.
      We went by taxi to the Ritsurin Garden which is a "strolling" garden with viewpoints to see the landscaped gardens and ponds with carp and turtles. There were pines and bonsai trees with Mt. Shiun as a backdrop.
      We returned to the hotel by local bus, and then went t a chicken restaurant for dinner, O ordered the mature chicken whilst the others had the young chicken.      Read more

      14 Tag Koyasan/Osaka/Naoshima

      Heute waren wir mit dem Bus, der Metro, dem Zug und der Fähre unterwegs. Der Ausblick von der Fähre war sehr schön. Am Abend durften wir noch unser neues Haus begrüssen.
