      Greymouth to Christchurch

      April 25 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Just by looking behind the window blinds, while still in bed, it wasn't looking good. Yesterdays ugly weather over the west coast was keep going strong and from a lazy look in the forecast it would only get worse. Dang, it is my last day and i was aimimg to drive to Christchurch through Arthurs pass which is supossed to be very scenic but i guess i wont be seeimg much. Well after loads of good days and bright sun it makes sense to have some bad weather. Last rainfall was a short tropical one while biking in Rotorua and before that it was the bad days all the way down south in Milford Sounds. Really lucky I would say! If I had two-three good raimfalls during a month in Gothenburg it would be written in the history books! And keep in mind the west cost is probably the most rainy place in New Zealand. It is what it is and I will try to stick to the initial schedule which includes a visit to Kokitika gorge further south and the go inland through Arthurs pass towards Christchurch.
It is New Zealands national today and tomorrow will be for most people a bridge day to a long weekend. Fred was aimimg to go to Queenstown for the the small break and we discuss meeting somewhere in between so we could say goodbye. Looking at the weather they de ided to leave the next day so we can meet in Christchurch and I could spend the night there before flying back.
And so i begun driving in the pouring rain towards the gorge.
Driving by the coast was scary due to the high winds, the low visibility and the crazy rough sea to my side. Still it felt very exotic!Took well over an hour to get there. The road later was a silly combination of dead straight tight asphalt combined with multiple 90 degree turns. All this into perfectly flat farmlands. Endless farmlands.
While at the gorge parking, the rain and wind were still going strong. Wore my raicoat and went to see a bit the trail map. It was suposed to be a short 15min walk to a suspended bridge with nice vies of the jade colored river. After a first attempt finding the trail I got soaked so I changed clothes into my waterproof biking shorts, took it for granted that i ll have wet clothes in my travel bag and continued with a fast pace into the right trail this time. I reached the bridge which was impressive and gave great views to the...muddy due to rain river! Bummer but expected. Roamed around a bit more so every part of me would soak well in the tropixal weather and headed into the car. Changed clothes, set the heater on max and started the final stretch of the trip. It would be a challenging driving session and you know what happens during these 'last' sessions! I was extra carefull but also i was enjoying it. The scenery, barely visible, started to change from flat to super steep with tight turns and a bit of traffic. At some point i see a guy at the roadside hitchiking...there was no second thought there. Dave was headed to Christchurch and his car broke down. Good company for this type of day. He was working in the area and gave me a proper personal tour of the area while we were covering the distance to Christchurch. The mountain pass was amazing. I cannot imagine how awesome it could be on a good day. Proper alpine scenes, tunnels waterfalls endless forests the whole package. On our way down the mountain we got out of the cloud and rainbows appeared. Everything was looking and felt great again! Well i still have a wet blob of clothes and soked shoes in the back seat that i need to figure out before the trip tomorrow.
Reached Christchurch and met directly with Fred and Juls for late lunch. Took a strol in the city while the parked car was soaking up the suprisingly warm sun that helped dry all the wet clothes. We continued abit the chit chat at home and called it for the...last day. Not bad, not bad.

      Die Pfannkuchenfelsen

      October 27, 2019 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      19. Nacht in Greymouth

      April 2, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Erinnert eher an Steppe.

      Greymouth

      November 28, 2018 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

      Brewing Beer in Greymouth

      July 2, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 9 °C

Last stop on the west coast of the South Island was Greymouth. I actually just stopped here to take the TranzAlpine train back to Christchurch since this train ride is supposed to be one of the nicest train rides in the world! What most people don’t know about Greymouth it also a nice city to go on a beer brewing tour. They have great craft beer for instance ginger and honey beer (since New Zealand is also know for its honey), IPA and hazy beers. Honestly they are all pretty good but I really liked the IPA. The tour was very informative and even though they closed the beer brewing part in 2020 due to the pandemic it is still a museum and you can do a beer tasting there. We were even able to pour our own beer - look at that great video. I know I know in Germany the foam is usually more haha but in New Zealand they said it is supposed to be about a finger thick.. I think I did a pretty good job for the first time :D Since I only had one night and a morning in Greymouth that was pretty much everything I did and just walked around the area around my hostel which was also nice. But i met a very nice girl from Philadelphia in my hostel and we took the train together to Christchurch on the next day :)Read more

      Greymouth - first sunset 2024

      January 1 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Morning fails…

      February 2, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Note: here, ‘Cheese pockets’ have bacon in it, ‘Raspberry buns’ come with raisins and walkways can be closed and you might find out only after driving 8km in a dead end road…

But found amazing coffee in a place that looks nothing like this from the outside…

      Happy Thursday everyone

      Mapua to Greymouth

      March 2, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      Estimated Travel Time and Kilometers

      Mapua - Nelson 30 minutes. 32 km
      Nelson - Westport 3 hrs 226 km
      Westport - Punakaiki 45 minutes. 57 km
      Punakaiki - Greymouth 30 minutes. 45 km

Totals for Day 4 hours 45 minutes 328 km

Hahaha. All of our estimates need to be doubled. This trip us about 7 hours.

We have done the drive to Nelson twice now - a lovely town. This time we turned just before we got to the town to drive towards Westport.

The road starts out flat as we drove through farmland and open plains. On the north island, we saw herds of cattle but here we were starting to see sheep.

We stopped for a coffee in Murchison which is a picturesque small town on the Buller River. People come here to experience the whitewater rafting and jet boating activities on this river. We stopped in for lunch.

Back on the road, we drove through the scenic mountains again and then through the Buller Gorge along rivers and through gullies with mountains towering high above. Chris’ arms got a workout on these windy roads.

We had been advised to fill up with gas whenever we could as there are long distances between gas stations. We didn’t see any stations until we got to Greymouth.

The road to Punakaiki hugs the coast, providing spectacular views of wild beaches and the wild Tasman Sea. At Charleston, formerly a prosperous gold town, once again we saw lots of touristy things to do - underground rafting and cave exploring trips.

Punakaiki is famous for its pancake rocks and booming blowholes. It is the centrepiece of the Paparoa National Park, which is packed with a variety of stunning landscapes. There appears to be many excellent coastal and inland walks in this area. I have written a footprint of this beautiful place.

The road to Greymouth is breathtaking - the Great Coast Highway. White capped breakers and rugged rocks on one side, bush-clad mountains on the other side. The town of Runanga is a typical mining village with an interesting walk to nearby Coal Creek Falls. I have read a lot about the Point Elizabeth walkway which we didn’t have time to do.

Finally we made it to Greymouth. It has a long gold mining history and is the largest town on the west coast. It known for its awesome seascapes and a Wild West look and feel. Actually kind of bleak. The local brewery, Monteith’s, runs tours and has a bar/restaurant. Chris and I went there for a ribs dinner and checked out their beer. All good.

We are staying in an old catholic monastery that has been converted into a hostel. Our room was lovely and with good views of the mountains and town but it was stuffy and not our favourite place. It rained all night so lived up to its name of Greymouth. It was grey for the whole time we were there.

If we did it again, we would drive just a little further south to the happening town of Hopitika.

      Westcoast untamed...

      January 5, 2018 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Obwohl Smilli irgendwo gelesen hat: that's the real New Zealand...
