      Da Milford Sound durch die Überschwemmungen nicht über die Straße erreichbar ist, die Straße wurde weggeschwemmt, nahmen wir heute die Fähre.

      Es war ein verdammt verregneter Tag!!!!
      Aber um all die schönen Wasserfälle sehen zu können das perfekte Wetter...

      Denn: Es gibt hier NUR 3 permanente Wasserfälle!!!!!!!!!! 😳😳😳
      All die anderen, über hunderte von Wasserfällen, gibt es nur durch den Regen!!!
      Einfach UNGLAUBLICH!

      Ich sah mir die Wasserfälle gemütlich von Innen an während Hilary und Chelsea dauernd raus rannten und wirklich komplett nass wurden. 😄🙈      Read more

      Das 8. Weltwunder!?🏔️🌈

      Ein weiteres Naturwunder, welches wir in Neuseeland bestaunen durften, ist der Milford Sound. Dieser wird gebildet aus gigantischen, zum Teil mit Bäumen oder Schnee überzogenen Felswänden, die einen wunderschönen Fjord einrahmen. Wir hatten Glück mit allerschönstem Sonnenwetter. Die Neuseeländer betiteln ihn als das achte Weltwunder! Auf dem Weg dorthin und zurück stoppten wir für kleine Wanderungen. Wir übernachteten in Te Anau und fuhren dann weiter nach Queenstown und Arrowtown. Hier wanderten wir etwas höher und länger, wie zum Ben Lemond saddle hinauf, was uns eine beeindruckende Aussicht bescherte. Abenteuerlicher streiften wir auf dem Gullytrack in Arrowtown, der alten Goldgräberstadt, umher... wir waren jedoch keine erfolgreichen Goldschürfer. 🤭 Natürlich probierten wir auch hier und da die leckere lokale Küche aus.Read more

      Milford Sound

      Am selben Tag hin und zurück jeweils knapp 300 Kilometer zu fahren, nur um einen atemberaubenden Fjord zu bestaunen, ist schon ein wenig unsinnig. In Transferstunden umgerechnet entsprach dies in meinem Fall rund neun Stunden im Bus und knapp zwei Stunden Rundfahrt mit dem Katamaran. Verrückt, oder? Hinzu kamen kurze Pinkelpausen und Fotostops. Dennoch hat sich die Reise zum Milford Sound mit den mächtigen, aus dem Meer ragenden Felsen, den Steilhängen und zahlreichen Wasserfällen gelohnt.

      Einzig die arme Busfahrerin tat mir leid. Ihre langen Arbeitstage sind in meinen Augen ziemlich unmenschlich. Zudem hatte sie eine Doppelrolle inne und fungierte auch noch als Guide. Wie sie uns bei diesem hohen Verkehrsaufkommen auch noch gekonnt durch den Tag führte, ist wirklich bemerkenswert. Vor allem wenn man bedenkt, dass die Gästeschar nicht ganz pflegeleicht war.

      Da ich zum ersten Abholpunkt "aufgeboten", musste ich bereits um sieben auf der Matte stehen. Erst um Viertel nach acht hatten wir dann alle Fahrgäste zusammen und konnten endlich Queenstown verlassen. Zunächst ging es dem Lake Wakatipu entlang, ehe wir kurz nach Kingston die Grenze zu Southland überquerten.

      Southland ist der südlichste und gleichzeitig grösste Distrikt der Südinsel. Mit 32'600 Quadratkilometer ist Southland etwa gleich gross wie die Schweiz ohne die Kantone Graubünden und Tessin. Im ganzen Distrikt leben nur gerade 33'000 Menschen. Gleichzeitig bevölkern aber 830'000 Milchkühe und Rinder, 160'000 in Gehegen gehaltene Hirsche sowie sage und schreibe 3.3 Millionen Schafe die weitläufigen Weiden.

      In Southland steuerte unsere Busfahrerin den regionalen Hauptort Te Anau an. Nach einer kurzen Kaffee- und Pinkelpause fuhren wir anschliessend über den Milford Highway bis zum gleichnamigen Hafen, wo der Katamaran bereits auf uns wartete. Je näher wir dem Milford Sound kamen, desto eindrücklicher wurde die Landschaft und spätestens nach der Fahrt aus dem Homer-Tunnel eröffnete sich uns ein spektakulärer Ausblick auf den Fjord.

      Die dunklen Felsen und moosbewachsenen Hänge mit den tobenden Wasserfällen wirkten bei Nebel und Regen mystisch und dramatisch zugleich. Obschon es kalt war und ich nach kurzer Zeit triefend nass war, genoss ich die Katamaranfahrt durch den Milford Sound. Auf der vierstündigen Rückfahrt hatte ich ja genügend Zeit zum trocknen😉      Read more

      Dag 8: Milford sound

      Op naar de volgende boottocht, dit keer in Fjordland. We zijn nu aanbelandt in Southland (komende van Otago) de meest zuidelijk staat/provincie.
      Fjordland en dus fjorden om in te varen of… om in te duiken. Ik die vandaag de Milford sound cruise met duiken erbij, mijn meeste zuidelijke duiken ever vermoed ik. En het was mooi, 2 zalige duiken gedaan met tof volk. Black Coral is een eyecatcher en is eigenlijk helemaal wit, juist dennenbomen met sneeuw op. Soms groeien er ook nog witte sponsachtigen rond, precies bergje sneeuw. Waarom black? Als ze afsterven, worden ze helemaal zwart😟 ook hier hebben koralen het moeilijk.
      Kalina en Kevin hebben ook een cruiseschip gedaan en nadien nog een hike- de andere kant van Routeburn track van vorige week…      Read more

      Milford Sound

      Milford Sound has the reputation to be the best tourist attraction of New Zealand. We're happy that we did save the best till last as we are very close to the end of our New Zealand tour.

      So what is the Milford Sound? If I had to guess I'd say its the sound of crashing water and waterfalls 🤭. A Sound is actually a geological term for an area of flooded valleys similar to a Fjord.
      The difference being that a Fjord is created by glacier and Sound is carved out by a river. It turns out that Milford Sound is technically a Fjord and not a Sound at all. When the first European explorers arrived the glaciers had all but disappeared so they assumed, incorrectly that the area was formed by rivers, hence the name. By the time they discovered their mistake they had already advertised it as a sound and no one wanted to change the name, so it stuck, confusing tourists and annoying geologists for generations.

      Milford Sound is the only Sound in the region that is accessible by road, so we took our wheels and off we went. Just out of town we saw a guy hitch-hiking. We saw quite a lot of hitch hikers while we were in the van, but we didn't have an extra seat so this time we didn't hesitate to pick him up ! There is only one road to go up Milford Sound so we were definitely on the same path. After a brief chat we found out that he is on his way to do a 5 days hike in the region and that he works as a ranger for the DOC (Department Of Conservation). Lucky for us, he has worked in the region for a few months so he was super knowledgeable on which roadside stops are worth doing along the road.

      We started by the Eglinton flats. Quite impressive to see the mountains coming up from the flat. It was also a very nice light with clouds in the distance. Second stop is the mirror lake. Less luck on this one as it started raining so not so much of mirror and we had a good gauge of how touristy this bit of road is. A lot of buses coming in from as far as Queenstown, an almost 5h drive! A bit further down the road and we stop to drop our hitch-hiker and on we go to our stop for our little walk, only 3hours. It was a very nice walk, very steep and rocky and muddy but fun! The reward at the top is Marian lake. A glacier lake nestled between high mountains. Very good spot for a picnic even if the bees kept flying around us!

      Back in the car for the last stretch of driving until our chalet for the night. We decided that we want to experience the scenery in the evening and morning so this was the best option, however off budget it was... This is the only accomodation available here so they have the monopoly! It was totally worth it though. After relaxing in our room with a view of 8 waterfall (yes we counted) we went for dinner at the lodge restaurant, a very good meal! After a busy day we fall asleep with to sound of rain.
      Next morning and we wake up with again this fantastic view, only this time 9 waterfalls! One waterfall probably got created by the rain at night. We get breakfast in our chalet and we're off for our cruise through the Fjord.

      Cruising down the Fjord is the most popular way to see the area as you can see all its beauty from within the valley. As we boarded our little boat we saw a huge cruise ship which had come up from the ocean to have a peak at the incredible scenary. The cruise ship really helped to put into perspective just how big some of the waterfalls really are. We sailed down one side of the Fjord, out to the open ocean and then back up the other side, taking in the amazing scenary and all the waterfalls along the way.

      One of the tour operators have also opened an Underwater viewing platform to see the odd fish and coral that live here. Because of the mud and grit rich fresh water which flows into the Fjord and sits on top of the sea water flowing in from the sea, it is able to sustain life that would normally need to live a lot deeper in the open ocean. At just 10m depth we could see coral and fish that usually live below 60m where its difficult for humans to go. It was nice to see all the underwater animals while staying dry.

      We came back on shore with the rain, a nudge for us to get going on our long drive to Queenstown. It was a magic place and we are glad that we kept it for the end!      Read more

      Milford sound

      Heute haben wir das gemacht was Warscheinlich die meisten aus Neuseeland kennen. Milford sound. Und es war wirklich Wahnsinn. Erstmal hatten wir riesen Glück mit dem Wetter. Das Fjord Land ist eine der Regen-reichsten Regionen der Welt. An 200 Tagen im Jahr regnet es hier und wir hatten zum Glück hatten wir wunderschönen Sonnenschein.
      Der Tag hat sehr früh angefangen und 6:15 klingelt der Wecker und um 6:45 sind wir losgefahren. Insgesamt 2 Stunden ging die Fahrt und in dem morgen graun sahen die Berge echt wahnsinnig beeindruckend aus. Die Strecke war auch echt cool aber teilweiße sehr eng. Es gibt z.b einen Tunnel der nur einspurig ist und man mehrere Minuten warten muß bis die Ampel grün wird. Auch hier gab es wieder viele one lane bridges aber die Natur war wahnsinnig schön.
      Um 9:30 ging dann in Milford sound unsere Bootstour los. Ein kleines 2 stöckiges Boot hat uns den Fjord einmal hoch und runter gefahren und es war wahnsinn. Die hohen Berge direkt am Meer mit dem Sonnenschein wirklich beeindruckend. Es gibt am Rand immer wieder Wasserfälle und sogar einen bei dem sich ein Regenbogenstück sehen lässt in sehr hellen Farben. Die Fahrt ging raus bis kurz auf das Meer und dort haben wir sogar Delfine gesehen. Eine ganze Schule die dann sogar auf den Rückweg zurück in den Fjord am Boot mit geschwommen sind und immer wieder neben den Boot hochgesprungen sind. Wir haben dann auf dem Boot ein Lunchbox mit Keksen Chips und Sandwich bekommen. Nach dem Mittagessen ging es dann in ein Unterwasser Observatorium. Das besondere am Milford sound ist das dort die Tiefsee simuliert werden kann und so deutlich tiefere Bedingungen herrschen. Da es dort so viel regnet bildet sich über den Meerwasser eine Süßwasser "Schicht" die deutlich dunkler ist durch den Dreck der mitgenommen wird wenn es am Berg runterläuft. So wird mehr Licht aus dem Wasser rausgefiltert und es ist deutlich dunkler. Außerdem ist das Wasser sehr ruhig und die Temperatur konstant.
      Also konnten wir in dem Unterwasser Observatorium z.b Schwarz Korallen sehen. Die gibt's es sonst nur tiefer als 100m und wir waren nur auf 10. Auch überraschend viele Fische sind um das Observatorium geschwommen. Unser Guide war sehr nett und hat alles erklärt. Von dort aus ging es mit dem Boot wieder zurück an Land und mit den Auto die wunderschöne Straße wieder zurück wo wir öfters Mal halt gemacht haben.
      Am Abend sind wir dann noch in Te anau rumgelaufen und es gab Ravioli zum Abendessen. Das klappt auch immer besser:)

      Noch ein kleiner Fact. Der Milford sound ist eigentlich kein Sound sonder ein Fjord. Also durch einen sich zurückgezogen Gletscher geformt. Ein Sound wird hingegen wird durch Flüsse bzw das Meer geformt.      Read more

      Aujourd’hui, visite de Milford Sound, un fjord très touristique en Nouvelle-Zélande.
      C’est un endroit qui prend réellement vie lorsqu’il pleut, créant des centaines de cascades.
      Mais nous, il faisait beau ! Et on ne va quand même pas s’en plaindre 😉

      Milford Sound Tour: Part 1

      Today we took part in an 8 hour tour that started in Te Anau, with many photo stops to Milford Sound and then back to Te Anau. Afterwards we drove from Te Anau to Queenstown. As soon as we arrived, we just had a quick meal and now we are already in bed. We are looking forward to a relaxing day here in Queenstown tomorrow.

      Heute haben wir an einer 8 Stunden langen Tour teilgenommen die in Te Anau begann, mit vielen Foto-Stopps nach Milford Sound und dann wieder zurück nach Te Anau führte. Danach sind wir von Te Anau nach Queenstown gefahren. Als wir ankamen, haben wir nur schnell etwas gegessen und liegen nun bereits im Bett.       There's a waterfall right above us

      Today we had two options: do nothing, or do a road trip to the famous Milford Sound. What we didn't do today, we'd do the next day. The weather forecast for both days looked simply terrible, so that couldn't decide it for us. We had to move hostels anyway today, so that made the difference: road trip!

      It was actually quite simple. We would just try to enjoy as much nice landscape as possible from the car and see if we could find some drier moments to get out in between. We set off on our 240km retour journey. The further we drove, the nicer the nature but the heavier the rain. While the clouds were also hanging low blocking the nice mountain views, they also added a mystical atmosphere. And when we reached the last third of the road the mountains came closer, the valley became more narrow and there were waterfalls everywhere, as if huge lakes on the mountain tops overfloated. Very very cool.

      We arrived in Milford Sound around 14:00, had lunch in the car and decided to wait on a parking for better weather. This turned out to be a bit naive. While reading and playing phone games in the car the weather got worse. It was suddenly thundering and the rain at times was so loud it led Susanne to joke "there's a waterfall right above us!".

      We were brave enough to get out nonetheless to take in whatever was actually visible. It wasn't too much at this point as mountains right next to us were only visible occasionally and most of the fjord just disappeared in the clouds. No sign of Mitre Peak, the mountain everyone takes pictures of usually. We didn't even see its bottom nevermind it's top. But we saw plenty of waterfalls and especially one of them was just enormous.

      On the way back we saw some waterfalls literally at the side of the road, with some of the water hitting the asphalt. While being such shit weather it was actually very cool to see the massive amount of water coming down the mountains. And on our way back we were even lucky enough to get to see the mirror lakes in dry conditions, so there was actually some sort of mirror effect.      Read more

      Milford Sound 🏞️

      🇩🇪 Heute stand eine lange Autofahrt auf dem Programm und zwar ca. 6h reine Fahrzeit🚐. Wir sind also früh morgens in Dunedin gestartet und dann via Te Anau nach Milford Sound gefahren. Auf dem Weg haben wir viele Zwischenstopps gemacht, da es auf dieser Strecke viel Interessantes zu sehen gab😍🏞️. Von Te Anau bis Milford Sound gibt es kein Mobilfunkempfang und kein Internet, somit waren wir ganz froh, dass wir mit offline maps unterwegs waren und Google uns nicht im Stich gelassen hat😉🗺️.
      Unser Tagesziel « Milford Sound » ist ein Fjord im Südwesten der Südinsel Neuseelands innerhalb des Fiordland National Park, des Piopiotahi Marine Reserve und der Weltnaturerbestätte Te Wahipounamu. Milford Sound zählt zu den weltweit beliebtesten Reisezielen und gilt als Neuseelands berühmtestes Touristenziel. Von manchen wird es sogar als das achte Weltwunder bezeichnet.✨
      Nachdem wir unser Hauptziel Milford Sound erreicht und besichtigt hatten, sind wir wieder ca. eine halbe Stunde zurück in Richtung Te Anau gefahren, da da unser Campingplatz war und wir uns mit müden Augen für eine weitere Nacht in unserem Campervan installiert haben🌙🌟✨.

      🇮🇹 Oggi avevamo in programma un lungo viaggio in auto, circa 6 ore di sola guida. Siamo partiti la mattina presto da Dunedin e poi abbiamo guidato via Te Anau fino a Milford Sound. Abbiamo fatto molte soste lungo il percorso, poiché c'erano diverse cose interessanti da vedere lungo la strada😍🏞️. Da Te Anau a Milford Sound non c'è campo per i cellulari e non c'è internet, quindi siamo stati molto contenti di viaggiare con le mappe offline e che Google non ci abbia deluso😉🗺️.
      La nostra destinazione per la giornata "Milford Sound" è un fiordo nel sud-ovest dell'isola sud della Nuova Zelanda, all'interno del parco nazionale Fiordland, della riserva marina Piopiotahi e del sito del patrimonio mondiale Te Wahipounamu. Milford Sound è una delle destinazioni turistiche più popolari al mondo ed è considerata la meta turistica più famosa della Nuova Zelanda. Alcuni la definiscono addirittura l'ottava meraviglia del mondo ✨.
      Dopo aver raggiunto e visitato la nostra destinazione principale, Milford Sound, abbiamo guidato per circa mezz'ora di nuovo verso Te Anau, poiché era lì che si trovava il nostro campeggio e ci siamo installati nel nostro camper per un'altra notte 🌙🌟✨.      Read more
