  • Day 36

    Siem Reap, Cambodia

    April 24, 2023 in Cambodia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

I'm writing this really late, but it would feel wrong to not include a last post from Cambodia 😅

I ended up doing a sunrise group tour to Anghkor Wat with other people from my hostel. We had our own tour guide that took us around to 4 of the main temples (there's like hundreds of then in the area). I learned so much about Anghkor history, the history of the rediscovery of the temples, as well as Hinduism and Buddhism.

Something that really changed our perspective about things, was the story our tour guide told us about his own experience with the Cambodian civil war and genocide. It turns out that when his mom was pregnant with him, his dad stole 2 fish so that she would have something more nutritious to eat. He ended up getting arrested and executed for doing this. This was at the start of the 4 worst years of the civil war. Then, when he was 2 months old he was taken from his mother by the Khmer Rouge, and she was told he had been killed. 2 years later when the killings ended and they were going around recording from each family how many they lost, she asked that he be written down as unknown instead of deceased since she had never actually seen it happen. When she found out there were many lost children in the capital who had survived, she begged her father-in-law to take her because she believed her son was still alive. Everyone thought it was a lost cause because he was only 2 months old then, and there was no way she'd be able to recognize him now if he even was alive. But she remembered that he had a little red dot on his cheek, and the moment she stepped into the children's camp she saw a toddler with a birthmark on that same spot and she instantly knew it was him. Such a sad story 😭 and it's crazy to think this happened not that long ago AND we're not taught about it in school...

  • Day 32

    Ayutthaya

    April 20, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 40 °C

The old capital of the Siam kingdom (modern day Thailand), this was one of the world's largest and richest cities from 14th-18th c. It was burned down by the Burmese army and the capital was moved. All that's left now is the stone ruins of the temples and a pretty underdeveloped modern day city.

Considering the age of these temples they were extremely impressive and in amazing condition. Something about crumbling ruins being overtaken by nature is easy to romanticize, and I enjoyed having the place mostly to myself (it was extremely hot and my desert upbringing came in handy hehe).

I went to like 5 different temples, and they were all built by different kings. They were used as Royal Temples and burial places for the kings. There were also crypts found in all of them with TONS of gold and valuables as offerings to Buddha. I also saw one of Buddha's relics that was in the museum.

    Karen Hill Tribe Villages

    April 17, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

Most of you have probably already seen my Instagram post about this.

Some things I didn't mention. Had a snake slither over my foot as we were hiking, shouted to the guide and described it to him. He calmly said "oh baby cobra! that's good luck! 👍"

The trail we were hiking was barely a trail 😅 it was basically just going steep up, steep down, or along the side of a mountain. The ground was hard with dry leaves on top bc dry season. Not so easy to walk on in 100 F/40 C heat

Jungle guide Cha points to the sunburnt arm of a French guy in our group "you this color because you eat butter and jam" then points to his own skin "because I eat spicy" 🤣

I caught the girls in the selfie looking at me and whispering when I was combing my hair outside. Later they came over and started touching my hair and wanted to take pictures of me with my phone 🥰 they didn't know a word of English so they were getting frustrated that I couldn't understand how to pose like they wanted 🤣 I now know how to say "peace sign" in the Burmese Karen Tribe dialect...

  • Day 25

    Chiang Mai - Songkran

    April 13, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 37 °C

Songkran Festival OMG honestly some of the most fun I've had on this whole trip so far.

Songkran is the new year celebration based on the Buddhist solar calendar, and over time the main aspect has become using water to wash away sorrows and bad thoughts for the next year (cleansing ritual basically). The elderly and more religious Thai will look you in the eyes and smile, pour a small cup of water on your shoulder and wish you a happy new year. Meanwhile, the younger generations are driving around in the back of trucks with super soakers and buckets and they are RUTHLESS. And the store owners with water hoses declare all out war with the motorcyclists.

I joined in on the fun and bought my own bucket. I was confused why there was a plastic string attached to it... soon found out its so I can throw it into the river for a refill 😂

I'm not going to lie it gets kind of annoying after 3 days, not being able to go outside without getting soaked. But it was all good fun 🥰

  • Day 23

    Pai

    April 11, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

So happy I decided to come to this little town. It was super cool to see a more rural and less touristy area of Thailand.

On our 1st full day we did tipsy tubing in the river, which is exactly what it sounds like. A little difficult in the dry season when the water is so low, but it was a lot of fun.

On the 2nd full day we did a tour of the main things to see around Pai
    *White Buddha
    *Sanchon Chinese Village
    *Morpaeng Waterfall
    *Pambok Village
    *Pai Canyon for sunset

    Chiang Mai pit stop

    April 9, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 37 °C

Ended up last minute changing plans to join some friends I made, so I'm going to a different mountain town instead of Chiang Rai! It's so nice how easy it is to just be spontaneous here.

I flew to Chiang Mai from the southern islands and met up with the girls. Explored the city for the day and went to the night market before taking the bus to Pai in the morning.Read more

  • Day 20

    Koh Samui Pig Island

    April 8, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Sara from Switzerland and I did a tour with snorkeling to the pig island! This was a very small island with I think 1 family living there. There were dogs, chickens, goats, you name it. And of course like a hundred pigs. They made us dinner in the outdoor kitchens (4th pic) and then chased the pigs away so we could eat 🤣

We ended the trip with the most beautiful sunset, my last one at the beaches and islands of Southern Thailand 🥲

  • Day 19

    Koh Samui

    April 7, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

On the way to the full moon party I met a Swiss girl on the ferry, and she messaged me yesterday asking if I wanted to explore the island with her! She rented a scooter and drove us around to a couple waterfalls in the center of the island. One of them was quite the adventure to find, but the cold water to swim in at the end of the trail always makes it worth it.

Even had a little spa treatment with hundreds of fishies eating the dead skin on my feet 🥰

    Koh Phangan Full Moon Party

    April 5, 2023 in Thailand

Full moon party! I met up with 2 friends that I met in Bangkok and they had a little group with them that I was introduced to. We all took the boat together to the island in the morning and explored a bit before painting ourselves up with neon paint and heading to the party at 10.

This is like one of the biggest beach parties in the world, and people come specifically to this island on this night to come to it. There were THOUSANDS of people here.

We had a lot of fun and I was able to stay awake until 930 am to take my ferry back. Thankfully I was with a good group and I always had a couple people with me (even for the 5 am 7-11 breakfast run).

Koh Tao - first day of diving

    April 1, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

On the island of Koh Tao in my little private jungle hut!

Just had a 3 hour classroom session and 5 hour pool session working on all the diving skills. Like 30+ things we had to learn and be able to do 😅 about half way through I was exhausted and my hands were in pain from the intense pruning.

Fortunately the actual diving and skills haven't been hard for me. I was able to do everything first try, so that's good. Apparently today was the hardest day and the actual ocean dives that we're starting tomorrow aren't as exhausting. Because we'll only be in the actual water for two 45 min dives.
