Guess thatโ€™s why they call it the blues!

    September 28, 2023 in Australia โ‹… โ˜€๏ธ 20 ยฐC

Well, back home ๐Ÿ  and the post holiday blues have kicked in like clockwork! To say that I was not looking forward to coming home, is an understatement!

If there was some way I could continue travelling ๐Ÿงญ forever I’d do it in a heartbeat! ๐Ÿงณ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿปโœˆ๏ธ

Jet-lag โœˆ๏ธ is also a bitch, but it is secondary to the realisation that normality will kick in soon ๐Ÿฅน Many changes are looming, but hopefully ๐Ÿ™ I’ll tackle them carefully & thoughtfully; reminding myself often of what is truly important.

While sipping rose from my exquisite Murano glass I’m reflecting: This has been a fantastic holiday and I have learnt a lot more about myself and things that I need to change…

The relief from me feeling flat has been opening up my treasured mementos from this beautiful experience… Yes, stuff is not important, but in this case, each item evokes feelings of contentment, satisfaction and excitement… Nothing compares with memories deep in your mind, but these bring back feelings, emotions and even fragrances from different destinations…

Marta told me, in Venice (…now my second favourite city) that she had forgotten how my enthusiasm for discovering new places & experiences was ‘infectious’.
To me, this was one of the most beautiful compliments I’ve ever received ๐Ÿฅฐ

There is NOTHING in the world that makes me happier than travel ๐Ÿงญ and the memories will keep me content until the next trip…

Shiny โœจ & New on the surface but not so glamorous ๐Ÿ˜ณ behind the scenes sums up Doha. In 27 hours we saw 2 sides. Disclaimer: obviously not long enough to make full assessment.

The Metro ๐Ÿš‡ was extremely shiny โœจ and new: slick trains ๐ŸšŠ and prompt services. We got a bit lost but did very well connecting different lines and platforms to find our tour location. It was only $2.50 for day pass.

Arrived at Souq Waqif we passed by poor workers who had the arduous task of sweeping ๐Ÿงน the giant forecourt of the Souq Waqif (Market) with brooms in 30+ heat ๐Ÿ”ฅ
The desert ๐Ÿœ๏ธ sand comes into city ๐ŸŒƒ overnight from the strong north wind ๐Ÿ’จ and they keep city as clean as possible. In ‘Winter’ (Jan-Feb) wind ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ is so strong the sand comes into your house! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Walking through the Souq we could smell so many beautiful fragrances from the perfumes and foods such as cinnamon and Cardamon, cloves and hibiscus flowers… Smells filled the air around every corner and at every turn… So delicious…until we got to the camel enclosure.

Camels ๐Ÿช are a sacred animal and are extremely precious and protected. They are well looked after and well fed. They have 35 g of fat in their hump which is their store for food. There were also squeaks & crowing, cheeps & chirping from birds ๐Ÿฆ and chickens ๐Ÿ“ and many other animals… It really was a feast for sight & sound! At exactly 1 o’clock in the afternoon at the hottest part of the day everyone shut up shop and rested! Don’t blame them! ๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿฅต

We visited the Falcon Souq. Falcons are revered also and considered very sacred animals. There was even a hospital ๐Ÿฅ which was purposely built for Falcons, which is where we met one of the Falcons’ with its owner… He very respectfully allowed us to take his photo ๐Ÿ™

Our guide told us that Doha is one of the safest places in the Middle East.

We visited West Bay, which is the iconic image that we often see of Doha skyline ๐Ÿ™๏ธ All of these very tall buildings have all sprung up in the last 30 years. The first building was the Sheraton Hotel ๐Ÿจ which is shaped like a pyramid which was built in 1985.

We finished the tour in the hottest part of the day and came back to the Souq after visiting Doha Cultural Centre. Enjoyed a traditional lunch and while German headed to the Museum I decided to relax with an aromatic Hibiscus ๐ŸŒบ tea at the pool overlooking the city.

So, I suppose it has come to an end ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ˜ข …yet another adventure of a lifetime. Loved ๐Ÿฅฐ every minute of discovering new, beautiful & unique places. Really enjoyed sharing this with you and can’t wait for another chance to make more memories……after I save up ๐Ÿ’ฐ Travel ๐Ÿงญ is the best tonic for the mind, body & soul ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿป‍โ™‚๏ธ

    Quality Qatar โœˆ๏ธ

    September 25, 2023 in Qatar โ‹… ๐ŸŒ™ 33 ยฐC

Up at Sparrows this morning: 5am ๐Ÿ•” packed and ready to depart the cesspit that is ‘Putrid Papillo’ ๐Ÿจ
There is not one member of our tour group that is determined to bombard the review pages in smear campaigns to rival a Trump Administration! Not much is guaranteed in life but this is: Never ๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿป again!

    Anyway… Neil…”….letting it go..!” ๐Ÿ˜

Seamless airport check-in and security. Rome’s airport is fantastic. Clean, efficient & the staff actually look refreshed & happy to be there; a rare sight these days! A+ โœˆ๏ธ

TripADeal actually has worked for us well on our journey home (…well, for me anyway…) I’m really excited ๐Ÿ˜œ for the long 27 hour layover because it means they booked us a 5 star hotel complete with personal transfers to & from: bonus holi-day if you ask me!Booked a tour for a sightseeing around Doha and break up an otherwise relentlessly long journey Down Under A+ TripADeal ๐Ÿ‘

As a Privilege Member on Qatar ๐Ÿ‡ถ๐Ÿ‡ฆ โœˆ๏ธ I get complimentary wi-fi for an hour! How spiffy to actually get internet ๐Ÿ›œ access 35,000 feet ๐Ÿ‘ฃ in the air! Fun ๐Ÿคฉ

Qatar is such a great airline! One of the best! I would never hesitate in recommending flying with them. The meals were and are delicious and the service is great A+ Qatar ๐Ÿ‡ถ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

On arrival in Doha we discovered just how quiet ๐Ÿคซ and clean the airport really is! Spotless ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป ๐Ÿงฝ
We also discovered how efficient the processes are because when we went up to the Doha information counter the workers knew exactly who we were and immediately took our bags and us in a chauffeured limousine to the Holiday Inn ๐Ÿจ which is a cut above anything we have stayed in this holiday! It is five star โญ๏ธ with a pool ๐ŸŠ‍โ™‚๏ธ and a bar which we discovered sells glasses of wine ๐Ÿท for $25 and cocktails ๐Ÿธ for $35! We don’t mind spending generously on holidays but not ridiculously so we went out into the 40° heat โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿฅต and found an authentic little restaurant and got an entire meal ๐Ÿฅ˜ for less than $40. It was very Indian influenced and the owners were very kind and generous, and knew all about the MCG and the cricket in Australia ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ˜
German felt his stomach churning so we came back to the comfort of our five star ๐ŸŒŸ establishment and called it a night… Tour planned tomorrow: covering the main sites so that will be my final holiday post… With a heavy heart… ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ’œ
LT, like the gals in Sex & the City ๐ŸŒ† we may even run into Richard Spurt out & about tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’ฆโ˜€๏ธ

And an interesting tidbit for you… Our limousine driver told us that you can be fined if you don’t have air conditioning in your car for the tourists when they arrive ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿปโ˜€๏ธ

Three Coins ๐Ÿช™ in the Fountain โ›ฒ๏ธ

    September 24, 2023 in Italy โ‹… ๐ŸŒ™ 20 ยฐC

The last day in Italy ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น started with a looooong 6 hour bus ๐ŸšŒ ride from Bari, where the ship ๐Ÿšข docked, to the ‘wonderful’ (๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿคฅ) Papillo Hotel ๐Ÿจ outside of Rome…

Most of us were able to have 2 seats ๐Ÿ’บ each and the bus was quite new & comfortable so it was not too arduous. Everyone was more subdued, quiet and reflective after the last three weeks of joyful holiday celebration.

On arrival at the Papillo Hotel which, I can say, without a doubt, is the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in in my entire life… (…And, that is honestly saying something!) It’s an absolute disgrace of a place which is the middle of nowhere… Anyway, I digress…

We all decided that we would get ๐Ÿš• taxi’s into Rome, which is essentially a 40 minute drive from the hideous hotel ๐Ÿจ
Picture this: eight hungry and tired travellers wandering aimlessly around the centre of Rome, trying to decide on somewhere to eat… It almost didn’t end well until we stumbled upon a very authentic Trattoria, which served the most exquisite, authentic and delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹ carbonara, tiramisu and jugs of house white wine ๐Ÿท and freshly baked bread with oil and balsamic vinegar… It was just what we all needed to perk us up and get us back in the mood to enjoy one final significant activity in Rome…

Tossing 3 coins ๐Ÿช™ into the Trevi Fountain โ›ฒ๏ธ with the hopes to come back to Italy, fall in love or whatever each of us secretly wished for ๐Ÿ™

The tradition, folklore, and history of how to toss a coin into the Trevi have not changed in all the hundreds of years that people have been doing it. A proper Trevi coin toss is done using your right hand to throw the coin over your left shoulder. Additionally, if you plan to throw a second and third coin into the fountain, each is to be tossed separately, not all at once. That means right hand over left shoulder three times with three individual coins to be married in Rome—after falling in love with a native, of course ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜˜

While there are surely lovers of Italy and lovers in general who will swear their wishes came true because of the coins they tossed into the Trevi Fountain, there’s no denying how much revenue from coin tosses have helped the city of Rome. An estimated 3,000 euros fly into the Trevi each day!

The world-renowned Italian fountain takes in approximately 1,250,000 euros annually. While these large sums have attracted the eye of thieves throughout the ages, attempts at stealing from the Trevi โ›ฒ๏ธ have almost always been thwarted.

As travelers pray for a promise to return to Rome someday, the city of Rome uses the money gathered at the Trevi to pay for the food and upkeep of a market for the area’s poorest inhabitants which is great ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป to know.

There just happened to be somebody proposing at the exact spot we threw our coins into the fountain tonight so perhaps we had a hand in that love โค๏ธ match ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป‍โ™‚๏ธ

Anyway, whether you believe or not one thing is for sure… We have had a fantastic time in Italy ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น and it has delivered the promise of wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. That is something we know for sure and I no longer need to wish for…

    Zestful Zakynthos ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ทโ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿข๐Ÿฉต

    September 23, 2023 in Greece โ‹… โ˜€๏ธ 25 ยฐC

OR: SLOW & STEADY wins the race: to Kerri Caves & Turtle ๐Ÿข Island ๐Ÿ๏ธ

An amazing sunrise ๐ŸŒ… as we caught the tender from the ship to the island ๐Ÿ๏ธof Zakynthos. We have been using an app on our phones called ‘Get your Guide’ for all of the tours we go on… They are about a third of the price of the ship excursion cost and they have been absolutely fantastic: you are connected with great ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป reputable companies!
Forward planning pays off! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Shout out to another fantastic app that I have used during this holiday : AIRALO for E-Sim cards for the phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ Without it, navigating to particular points of interest and to company locations would not have been as simple. The map ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ component has been invaluable. I have never travelled with a phone connection (previously only relying on wi-fi at hotels ๐Ÿจ & cafes โ˜•๏ธ). This is the first time, and I now realise it is extremely handy. In one way it is also sad ๐Ÿ˜” because up until now I have happily travelled ๐Ÿงณ the world without any ‘connection’. There are positives and negatives for everything… You learn that lesson when travelling ๐Ÿงญ

Zakynthos is the most southern point of the Ionian Islands and the third largest. It covers an area of almost 405 sq. km. Zakynthos, an island with great contrasts such as golden sand beaches and imposing rocky shores, has a temperate, Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and cool summers. Zakynthos also has a long and rich culture, much influenced by the Venetians. According to mythology and the writings of Homer, the island was named after Zakynthos who was grandson of Zeus and Electra and the son of Dardanus who founded Troy! (Personal connection to me ๐Ÿ˜ …nice way to round off the cruise ๐Ÿšข)

Waters ๐ŸŒŠ around Zakynthos often have electric light blue ๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿฉตcolour because of the numerous sulphurous caves around the beach and when the sea is rising a large quantity of sulphur radiates, giving the possibility of taking beautiful pictures. We did just that on our Turtle ๐Ÿข island and Kerri caves boat tour… We took to the spectacular, calm blue waters of the Adriatic Sea for a Slo-mo boat ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ ride (turtle pace) to this part of the heritage listed island. We were a little bit worried about the time (5 hour trip) and getting back to the ship before it sailed off without us! We actually saw turtles ๐Ÿข at the bottom of the crystal clear ocean as we passed through the cove. โ˜€๏ธ ๐ŸŒŠ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท Just so cute!

We spent the entire day in and out of the boat, jumping into the clearest and most beautifully transparent blue water ๐Ÿ’ง I have ever seen in my life! It was simply divine. The temperature in the water & out was perfect โ˜€๏ธ
The turquoise water lapped against the white cliffs as we joyfully made the most of the last beach swim this holiday ๐Ÿ˜ข

We arrived at the final swimming spot and there were little boats selling beers ๐Ÿป and food! We swam and drank coronas ๐Ÿ‹ in the sun! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿข๐Ÿบ๐Ÿบ๐Ÿบโ˜€๏ธโ˜€๏ธ

The images will speak for themselves… please ๐Ÿ™ take a look at the videos as well: sublime! The only thing that slightly tarnished a perfect day was the last minute worry that we would not make it back to ship in time! Thankfully we made it to the port with seconds to spare; not before having to tell the bus ๐ŸšŽ driver
to “…take a straight to the fucking Port…” when he took a turn to go to the olive ๐Ÿซ’ pressing factory! ๐Ÿญ
    Phew ๐Ÿ˜ฎ‍๐Ÿ’จ ๐Ÿšข

A more amazing 5 hours I cannot recall! It was so magnificent, breathtaking and stunningly relaxing ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿค๐Ÿฉต

Transported me back to those days when I’d spend all day at beach ๐Ÿ–๏ธ as a child, in & out of water, sunning myself, relaxing ๐Ÿ˜Ž & feeling salty, sunburned & genuinely grateful: travelling reconnects you to that part of yourself that you thought ๐Ÿ’ญ you’d forgotten… ๐Ÿ™

As the sun sets on the cruise ๐Ÿšข component of our TripADeal package, we realise that the end is coming…
What a fun ride it has been! So many amazing destinations and so many memories made, friends & laughs ๐Ÿ˜‚ a plenty and experiences that no amount of money ๐Ÿ’ฐ could ever replicate…

These are the joys of travel… ๐Ÿงณ

There is nothing like it in the world ๐ŸŒ … It is my pride, my joy and my everything!

    Calming Corfu ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ทโ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

    September 22, 2023 in Greece โ‹… โ˜€๏ธ 27 ยฐC

Arrival into Corfu ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท and it felt like everybody was still asleep… Well, I suppose it is only 10 am, and the Greeks like to party later in the day๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿผ

By midday, crowds were beginning to surface, but it still had a really laid-back feeling about it. There were no major sites that I needed to be at or committed to, so I was free to just wander, observe, and enjoy it. And that I did! Laid back Greece ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท at its’ absolute best! Yassssou ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

Sitting in one of the sleepy thoroughfares, I ordered a cappuccino โ˜•๏ธ and the most delicious home-cooked crêpes with lemon ๐Ÿ‹ and sugar. The lemon took me back to the early days of this wonderful adventure on the Amalfi Coast: seems like a long time ago which is always a sign of a wonderful holiday. What a wonderful time it has been, and today is the perfect destination for reflection ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿป‍โ™‚๏ธ

While meandering the cute alleyways and strips, I came across a hat ๐Ÿ‘’ that actually suits me so that was my only purchase (… unless you include a bracelet and Greek style shirt… oh, and necklace with anchor & Greece beach ๐Ÿ–๏ธ towel ๐Ÿคซ) on a very relaxing Greek style day โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ˜Š

Faliraki Beach ๐Ÿ–๏ธ… just beautiful ๐Ÿ˜
This is the kind of beach/rock pool made for lounging around all day; crystal clear shimmering water bursting with the purest Greek sea ๐ŸŒŠ salt ๐Ÿง‚ and a gentle breeze. Slow, sensual & laidback tunes playing by a DJ in the background at the bar…everyone simply relaxing ๐Ÿ˜Ž and enjoying the glorious sunshine โ˜€๏ธ
There’s even a fresh water shower ๐Ÿšฟ to refresh yourself afterwards. It just doesn’t get much better than this!

It is so wonderful to be able to just take off your clothes and go swimming in your underpants! Nobody seems to feel self-conscious, everyone just being themselves… Magic… Watching sailboats gently drift across the water right in front of you while you swim is just so soothing & gratifying ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿปโ›ต๏ธโ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท

Found a fantastic authentic old style family run Greek restaurant… Watch the final video to see the amazing spread that I was given… Gyros ๐Ÿฅ™ with Greek salad ๐Ÿฅ— and potato, pita ๐Ÿซ“ and Tzatziki! Amazing x 100 Retsinas! ๐Ÿท ๐Ÿคค๐Ÿคค๐Ÿคค

Ah! Corfu: you give the perfect summer ๐ŸŒบ vibes and then some..!

    Majestic Mountainous โ›ฐ๏ธ Montenegro๐Ÿˆ

    September 21, 2023 in Montenegro โ‹… โ˜๏ธ 26 ยฐC

Or: KITTY ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ› KAT KOTOR ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ……

Another day, another beautiful town! As I am writing โœ๏ธ this I am climbing,l 1350 steps to overlook the beautiful Bay of Kotor in Montenegro ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ช
It is extremely thirsty work and I am dripping with sweat: ๐Ÿ˜“ so much that it is running into my eyes and stinging them! But, it is all worth it! What a prize once you reach the top! โ›ฐ๏ธ

We have been averaging about 20,000 steps every day, but nothing is as strenuous as today’s effort in climbing the steps up to the fortress. I was personally tempted, a few times, to throw in the towel, but this is probably my one and only time in Montenegro, so I was not going to let it beat me ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›

Like Venice, Kotor had a problem with rampant mice, rats, and snakes. Thankfully, the imported cats ๐Ÿฑ were very happy to take care of that little problem and soon the city became a thriving trading port. Because of this, cats started to become a symbol of good luck. There is even a cat ๐Ÿฑ museum!
Dad: This is where your 80th birthday present has been bought so it should bring you good luck for at least a year… Apparently if it doesn’t you can bring it back and try for another year! ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ˜โœŠ๐Ÿป ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿฑ

You know what? There has not been one destination on this journey that I have not enjoyed for one reason or another. They have all been wonderful and unique in their own special ways. The only thing I genuinely miss is being a part of the night time activity and night environment for many of them. Still, it has definitely been a wonderful taste of Europe… Places I would probably not have put on my own itinerary otherwise. ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ‍โฌ›๐Ÿˆ

Another huge plus for today’s town was that the ship basically docked right next door to the town so all we had to do was get off the ship ๐Ÿšข and walk across the road. We even came back and had lunch on the ship and then went back to this magical and majestic town again … Sat in the town Square and had a sangria and watch the world go by ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

As the ship ๐Ÿšข rolled outta Kotor, with a slight drizzling of rain ๐ŸŒง๏ธ I thought ๐Ÿ’ญ…If only I could continue travelling ๐Ÿงณ forever ๐Ÿ™

Speedboat to the Blue Cave ๐Ÿšค

    September 21, 2023 in Montenegro โ‹… โ˜๏ธ 26 ยฐC

Leo & Igor ๐Ÿ‘… took us on an amazing speedboat ๐Ÿšค tour to the Blue Caves: breathtakingly stunning!
On the way we stopped at Our Lady of the Rock ๐Ÿชจ Island where yet another fanciful tale of a floating painting of the Virgin Mary was found in the water nearby, so they decided to build a church to honour this wonderful supposed discovery โ›ช๏ธ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‡

We went inside a cave that was built during the WW2 in order to hide submarines from the enemy; it was spooky ๐Ÿ‘ป inside. The sexy Leo played the James Bond theme loudly as we went inside because the cave because it was used in the James Bond movie of Skyfall, right at the end, apparently…

Lastly, but definitely not least…the mesmerising Blue Caves: the water ๐Ÿ’ง was a magnificent shimmering blue & so inviting! Thankfully we stayed here for 20 minutes swimming ๐ŸŠ‍โ™‚๏ธ and jumping off the speedboat ๐Ÿšค As you can imagine: my absolute favourite part of the 3 hour trip… refreshing and pinching myself with yet another amazing experience.

Kotor Port is right next to the old town so we could have lunch ๐Ÿฅ— back on board today.

    What a brilliant morning! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿšค๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’™

I love a Broadway or West End Musical…
That is no secret… The performances on the ship ๐Ÿ›ณ๏ธ in the ‘Broadway Theatre’ are exceptionally good.
The entertainment staff are trained to perfection and put on an absolutely brilliant show!
Tonight’s effort, which essentially paid tribute to the best of the best musicals of all time, including Wicked, Mary Poppins, Chicago,
Les Miserables, Hairspray, 42nd Street, and ultimately Moulin Rouge! Tonight’s was the best show I have seen on the ship so far… Just brilliant so, deserved its’ own post…
