      Full on ship experience!

      February 20 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Oh my, things are moving at a lightning pace now that we're on this marvelous ship! It is so large, and we're still today figuring things out! First off, we received amazing advice from a seasoned traveler before we left. I, of course, bought everything she recommended--and we are so organized!

Our room is great and it's in a convenient location. We have a group whatsapp setup, and that's been fun too! We had a ship day then a day in Melbourne (yesterday). I feel like we're following the Taylor Swift tour. Melbourne holds the distinct award of the largest tour attendance--and after our private city tour I can see why.

Melbourne was a large metropolitan city with a lot to see. For my Phoenix family, we got to drive on the track for the upcoming grand prix--which apparently kicks off the season. I will definitely be watching ESPN next month! The homes here were the most expensive thus far. I thought California was pricey, but now that I've seen the 10x10 bathing hut, and I've changed my mind! Would you pay $1.5M for this??? These huts are now heritage sites, and there's no overnight sleeping, electricity or running water. I think we'd invest our money in Capitola!

This city loves everything exercise and they have many sports teams. I thought I knew about them all, but this is a hole other continent! We went to another amazing shopping site where I bought some great cheese and crackers for our room. When we were boarding, I FINALLY found the champagne bar--yay! It was my first glass since Thanksgiving! I put it on our group chat, and before I knew it, we were a mighty Trilogy group! Speaking of that, we absolutely need to put the brakes on food and day drinking--so I'm drinking the best wine and cheese from here on out! Needless to say we weren't thrilled to have another eight course meal--so we had a sushi dinner with others! More cocktails and shows with friends plowed us under.

This morning has me more back to reality. Exercise was top of mind and our priority! I took pilates and spin classes while James played pickleball! Before we knew it we had missed the buffet breakfast and we could eat a much healthier lunch--winning!!!

Tonight is a specialty group Italian dinner...tomorrow I'll give you an update!

      Hi Melbourne&Clarions Suites Yarra River

      February 22 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 36 °C

      Hello Melbourne,

      Bass Strait

      March 14 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We are at Bridport on the northern coast with the waves from Bass Strait lapping at our doorstep.
We’ve stayed at three camp sites so far and St Helens was the most modern, Bridport is quite basic, open, and sprawling – probably very busy at holiday times. We are parked under a few trees on open grass.
This morning, we got going early, but a lot of vans had left before us. Today we were heading up to the Bay of Fires coast. It is famous for its beaches, red rocks, and a super place to freedom camp with lots of beaches with camp slots on the compacted sand. We decided to stick with the commercial sites.
But first a coffee in St Helens – and it was pretty good too – bought a loaf of sourdough for lunch.
We went past Binalong Bay which looked amazing with yachts in a calm bay and moody morning light. The road to the Bay of Fires peters out at a place called The Gardens and we parked up with the others. We went to a lookout, and then I went from a wander around the little inlets and rocks. Got some good shots.
Went back to St Helens and then on the main road west first to Scottsdale and then Bridport. The drive was quite tough – a lot of windy bends, tight corners, climbing, climbing – through native forests and then down into pastureland. We went through a town called Derby which is the mountain bike capital of Tasmania – and the town was buzzing – bikes and bikers everywhere, and lots of biking businesses. Later we came upon their Rail Trail. Not long past Derby we took a slight detour to Legerwood, which is a one horse town that has carved a tribute to its WW1 soldiers out of old tree trunks. The trees were planted after WW1 for the soldiers that they lost and a little while ago the council said they were rotting and dangerous and wanted to remove them. The locals said they were remembrance trees and convinced the Council to allow the community to chainsaw carve figures etc. Sounds crass, but it was clear to us that the locals did not want the memories of their fallen soldiers forgotten.
We had a coffee at Scottsdale and sat outside in the sun – pretty much the most sun we’d seen all day. And then a short distance to Bridport.
We went to a nearby IGA and got some washing powder – need to get some fresh clothes back in circulation. While Gran was tending the washing she got talking to a guy who was also doing the washing and he and 3 others had sea kayaked – they start at Port Welshpool in Victoria and island hop across Bass Strait to Bridport - took them 2 weeks, a lot depends on the weather. We looked on the internet and it’s a well-known challenge and notoriously dangerous.
Thursday we will travel to and trip around the Tamar Valley and Gran has booked accommodation at Beauty Point on the west side of harbour.

      Melbourne Friends

      February 26 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

We met Carol and Steve on our world cruise last year, and they met up with us today at the port!

Our other Melbourne pals couldn’t make it, but we spent a fun filled day with Carol and Steve, catching up, eating fish ‘n’ chips, exploring a cemetery, walking some more, and capping it all off with decadent pastries and espresso.

We barely scratched the surface of all that Melbourne has to offer, but it was the perfect way to spend a day here.

      Stadtbummel 2.0 🏙

      March 14 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

🦜Read more

      Ménage-à-trois

      March 2 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Melbourne 🚋🌳🏉

      February 24 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

G’Day Australia! 🐨 Unser erstes Ziel in Down Under: Melbourne.

      Melbourne Tag 4

      February 21 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

      Walking the lap

      February 23, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today was the big day! Visiting Albert Park, traditionally the hosting venue of the first Formula 1 race of the season. Machiel was so excited he was already awake at 5. Or who knows, maybe he really had slept enough after 7 hours like he claimed 😏 Susanne wasn't aware of that, so we actually only left the apartment at 10. A short tram ride brought us close to the park, after which 5.3km of walking were waiting for us. The preparations for the race in just 3 weeks were fully going on. That was nice as it meant that it was largely closed for normal traffic so we could walk just on the track itself. We entered the circuit just before turn 13 in the 3rd sector. It was interesting to see the poor state much of the asphalt and kerbs were in. Not sure if that's still getting some maintenance in the next 3 weeks. The gravel traps weren't ready yet either, but the gravel was already delivered. We tried to sneak into the pit entrance, but were unfortunately stopped by some security people.

Walking onto the start/finish straight there was a supercar meetup of some sorts, with some of them also driving on parts of the straight being loud and looking expensive. We continued into sector 1, where the usual road cuts out a part of the circuit, which in everyday life functions as a parking lot. In sector 2 we spoke to some painters who were painting parts of the Pirelli logo on the wall, turns out they had to do hundreds of them. We continued but it was getting tough as it was very sunny and around 25 degrees. Before completing our lap we had a nap under the shadow of a tree along the back straight, right next to the golf course. After that we only had the challenging turn 11-12 complex to go, which didn't look as impressive because they straighten it a bit for the normal road traffic. Laptime: around 2,5 hours, including a nap.

Most of the afternoon we spend in the apartment before heading out to St. Kilda for the evening. We walked along the beach boulevard and had dinner at a nice vegan restaurant.
