  • Big ass lake

    28 Oktober 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We did a bit of animal searching. Tried to find some tree kangaroos and platypus's but were entirely unsuccessful.

Ended our trip with a visit to an exceedingly large lake. By this point, the sun had gone in and it was raining, everyone was tired and a bit damp. But this lake was exactly what we all needed. It was warmer in the water than it was out of it. And jumping in was so fun. I have a video of the three of us doing it together but I cannot upload it which is really annoying. The lake itself was gorgeous and we weren't here long but so much fun. It is a fresh water lake so we were all having to work so much harder to stay afloat it was kind of funny how bad we all were.

The journey back was was over an hour but we were all so tired I think half the bus was asleep for most of it. I did not sleep and am glad for this as the scenery was worth staying awake for. I have officially fallen in love with the tropics around Cairns. The trees, the vibes, I'm really liking it here.

Once back in the city, I grabbed my backpack and made the treck to my second hostel. Thankfully it was only a few blocks away but I was melting by the time I arrived. This hostel is much nicer than Gilligans, not surprising as it is a YHA and they are always nicer. But literally no one is speaking to each other. I entered my room and they are mostly guys who are clearly long timers, which is a stark contrast to my hostel room at Gilligans which was all girls and we all got on so well. But it's no biggie.

I spent the evening Cairns' arts centre at a comedy show. It was a great evening. There were 5 local acts, I didn't get all the jokes as they references Aussie things that I dont know or understand being here only a few weeks. Then the final act was Luke Kidgell. He has become very popular on social media for his failures with audience members. He was amazing. I've been following him for a while so when I saw he was headlining in Cairns the one week I am here I knew I had to go. A very good decision.

Then ended the evening with a video call home
I have sort of treated today as my birthday. Odds on I will be working the 8th, so it made sense to do today as my celebration. I did the best tour with new friends, made more throughout the day and saw a show in the evening. A full packed and great 21st.

  • Pancakes, markets and movies

    29 Oktober 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Yet another baking hot day. The hottest it has been. It has felt like 37° fairly often, however today it was 37°, I do not want to know how hot it felt!

    Anyways, another great day.

Woke up at 7,30 and hit Rusty's market with the girls. It was a mix of knickknacks and food. We bought some fruit and then headed back to my hostel for breakfast. We made a feast of pancakes and fruit. It took literal hours but was so much fun making and eating. An excellent post birthday breakky.

Then we headed back to the Rustys market to have another look around. I found a cute skirt I liked but I feel like I will never actually end up wearing it and right now I need to be wearing everything I have in my bag.

After a little more browsing we headed back to our individual hostels. Thanks to the heat and the amount of food we consumed we were all a little done for. I made some phone calls and confirmed some stuff before settling down to read. I nabbed one of the hammocks which are truly superior, and settled down to read. At that point I realised my RSG had been unlocked so instead I spent nearly 2 more hours on that. I now have to do some video recordings in the morning when it is quieter here and then I should be done on my RSG. RSA is still pending but I spoke to my new boss and I have 30 days after starting with them to have both courses complete so I have stopped stressing.

After speaking to him I now also need to do some shopping tomorrow. They provide tops but not bottom so I need some black work trousers or skirt. I have both but I dont think either is work appropriate unfortunately.

Anyways, I did that for a bit before heading down to the lagoon again. It was rather busy, it being a saturday and all, but we found some shade. Unfortunately it was so hot that after about 40mins I was out. It's like I could feel my skin burning. Thankfully I haven't but it was not much fun. I was also literally dripping. Like, proper drops running down my face. I am the height of attractive!

Back at the hostel I finally did some of my reading in the fun hammock and relaxed. I was going to go to the shops to pick my stuff up but then Rebecca said she was going to watch the sun set. So yet again, I went down to the lagoon and we watched the sunset together. It was much better this time but the clouds still rolled in. It had been clear skies all day until that moment.

Spotted for first time the moon. It is smiling. Its sideways. That just seems entirely incorrect for my brain but there we go, it's there. I'm kinda excited for a few days from now to when it is not longer smiling but frowning. I feel like it's going to be really funny.

Because it is Halloween they were playing a movie in the green by the lagoon. So being the responsible 20+ year olds we are, we sat down and watched the second half of the new Addam's family movie. There were kids everywhere all dressed up. It was a true chill vibe. And the movie wasnt to bad either.

We then popped into the night market again, had a little food and talked. We are all in very similar mindsets and stages despite being a few years apart, and the conversation turned very deep all of a sudden but it was nice. People always talk about the highs of travelling but the reality is never shown. It feel almost too personal to speak about with anyone who isnt in the same position.

Rebecca is a true queen and offered me a pair of her black trousers. She is just about to do the East Coast so is never going to wear them in this heat and offered them to me. A true legend, I love her loads. So I am still going to do some browsing in the morning, see if I can find something I like. If not, I can use her trousers.

Closing off the day with some studying for my RSG videos in the morning, and a spot of reading. Someone is asleep in my room so I am yet again in the comfy hammock.

  • Botanical Gardens

    30 Oktober 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Oh beans in toast, how I have missed you.

Woke up at a lovely 7am, giving myself an hour to get ready and begin the walk to the girls hostel. Picked them up at their hostel and continued on our way to the botanical gardens. I very nice walk, however Google said it would take around an hour. It took us 2hrs. Granted we did stop a few times and it was hella hot so we were going very slow but we made it eventually.

On the way we saw a cool fruit tree and after each of us asking our families, we eventually came up with it being a Jack Fruit. Thank you mum/google. I really like Jack fruit but I had no idea that is what it looked like. A mix between a melon and a porcupine. Wild.

The gardens were very nice. They had a salt water lake and a fresh water lake which were both pretty. Then a nice walk through a 'jungle' boardwalk. It was a lot cooler in there which was good. Then some lawns and a gated garden. It wasnt like the botanical gardens in Melbourne or Adelaide as there wasnt many flowers and sculpted areas. It was more a collected of their plants stuck together with some paths going through. But we found a lawn with some shade to relax in.

We all ended up falling asleep in the shade. Little dodgy with all our stuff but between the 2hrs of walking and the heat we were exhausted. Once we woke up we had our little picnic and the read for a bit before getting kicked out at 2pm. What gardens closes at 2pm on the weekends?

Also, we saw some signs after walking through the places so that was mildly unnerving.

Anyways, went back to the hostel. I grabbed some things I need for my new job/ things I am running low on and relaxed in the hammock again.

At around 7, once the sun had set I met Rebecca for a bit if a walk and chat. She had done the great barrier reef all day and the company she did it with was the only carbon neutral, environment benefitting company that runs the tours. So I will be booking my trip with them for definite. It's a little bit more expensive but its worth it for something like that.

I then made some dinner, tried to use up as much of my food as possible so I'm not lugging it about on the bus and relaxed again. They were playing Hocus Pocus in the pool area which I missed the first half off. So I chose the quiet dark air condition room. Definitely a smart choice.

  • Final day

    31 Oktober 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

My final day of freedom is here. From now on i will be shackled back to reality by working.

Woke up early because why not. Went for a spot of shopping with Lydia. Bought stuff I dont really need but will make my life in the devils armpit so much easier. And did my laundry.

I ended up checking out at 8 because I was going shopping and didn't want to miss the checkout time. Unfortunately this meant I had to sit outside for the remainder of the day in 35° while I waited from my bus.

Got on the bus after a little hassle. The driver was in a dreadful mood. We were supposed to leave at 3, and 3.05 he began loading us on. For some reason he sat in his bus for 15mins and didn't speak to any of us so that was strange. But eventually we set off. I had to call the people I am stying with as we were over a half hour late which was really annoying but they were super nice.

Check in was a breeze, I cried a little as the weeks room payment left my bank account but it's so much less than hostel jumping would be.

My room very simple, wardrobe and bed. The toilets and showers are right next door and the kitchen is a few steps away which is great. It is all basic but overall exactly as I was expecting. It's sad to see a little as this place is clearly big enough for at least a 100 people, there is maybe 20 of us, I've seen around 14 so far. But its surprisingly clean and the shock of seeing bugs will wear off eventually. Side effect of leaving in a forest next to the beach.

Other than that, the wifi is shockingly bad. It works for messages but that's about it. I hadn't really thought about that, but I suppose that's what comes with being remote. Itll be easy enough for me to adapt, it's just a bit strange. I am very used to just scrolling through social media or watching something when I'm bored or have time to kill. There wont be any of that now.

The town is nice, small but has all I might need. There is a cafe, a woolworths and a chemist. Not sure what else I will need. It's going to be a very different way of living to what I'm used to but I'm excited for that. A new challenge.

  • Wongaling Beach

    1 November 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

Had my first day at Wongaling Beach, was quiet fun.

I had a lie in which was nice, first time not having roommates waking me up or someone next door. Then made some breakfast and headed down to my new job. Did not manage to meet my new boss but did meet some of the others. Got handed two massive piles of paper work.

Spent the entire afternoon completing those, not fun. I also did some more of my RSG, read my ARC book and began NaNoWriMo again. It's insane how quickly November comes around.

I then realised I had done nothing except sit on my but all day, so I did a sunset walk to the beach and back. It wasnt long as the sun was setting pretty quickly and I didn't want to be out in the dark somewhere I didn't know just yet.

Then attempted to make myself an omlete for dinner. It did not succeed, but tasted pretty good in a pile anyways.

  • First day back in reality

    2 November 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

I started my first shift at work at 12 today. So woke up, did my NaNo and some stretches for a bit then headed off to work.

As always, being the newbie sucks. I know what I'm doing, but not in this bar. I don't know where anything is, I dont know how to till works or the procedure with the tables. I hate being the newbie.

But everyone was super nice and welcoming. I think I annoyed them a little but all newbies annoy people so hopefully it's all good. There is another newbie aswell, Sarah. She has clearly been doing this longer, and it was her second shift, so she was a bit intimidating but there we go.

The job its self is pretty easy. There is no floor team just bar, so we do a bit of everything which is nice. There are three bars, bistro, gaming and sports. I will be stationed in bistro this week as that is my experience. It is essentially a restaurant with a bar in it, nothing special but it's the only place in an hours drive that's any good so it can get very busy. We had two functions on last night but as I'm new I didn't have to deal with them which is a plus. The gaming bar has all the machines and things in it, as well as the ticket lottery machine I think. As I have zero experience there, I tried to steer clear of it. The sports bar is essentially a pub. They have the same food as bistro, but have various games and races playing as well as a betting till. Again, zero experience so I only ran food for that section. Their events rooms are practically none existent, there is one. So that's a plus as the same team does that aswell.

Overall it was a good shift. A little stressful for the others because it was busy and I couldn't do much except run food and clean, but ok. We also get a 30min break, and 50% off food from the kitchen which is lovely. We also get a discount card for Woolworths so will be getting that asap as it's the only food place locally and I'll take a 5% discount any day.

I have been scheduled in 12-9 until sunday which will be interesting. Two months of not working then 5 back to back 9hr shifts. I will be dead by monday but it's so I can learn asap and stop being a pain to the others. And hopefully understand more of the slang. I few times I had to ask them to repeat because I had genuinely no clue what they had said. I also now have to learn the sizes of all the glasses and different uses. UK is simple, pint or half. Here, confusing. Bottle, pot, scooner, pint, jug. There is also little and talls for spirits and soft drinks. Why do they need so many!

Walked back to my room and spotted the moon again. It's a really bad photo but it is now half full, and rotated clockwise so now sits half way between sideways and upside down.

  • ITS CHRISTMAS!!!

    3 November 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Yes that is correct, we did put the Christmas decor up today. I was very proud of my tree, understated and pretty. It's also really bright so theres that.

I spent the morning moving into my official room. It is a shared accom so there is two single beds. I surprisingly prefer the single bed, it feels more comfy. There is the same amount of storage but as it is half the price of the double and odds on I wont have to share, I'm happy. The guy who was here before was here for 6months and he never shared in that time. The demand is not high at all and, for me at least, I'd have to wait for another female to come through to share with. I dont think I'd care if it were a dude but we'd have to both sigh off on it and even then the likelihood of someone coming through is super low.

Work was very slow today. I spent most of it decorating and cleaning. It's kinda funny because a couple of the girls have spent my last two shifts running around d stressed because theres so much to do. But if they stopped for a second they'd realise there really isnt and they are just trying to do everything at once. Perks of working in somewhere twice the size I guess, you learn how to prioritize better and keep things calm for the billionaire guests.

Today definitely went a lot better than yesterday. Because I wasnt shadowing anyone, I had more freedom to do things my way and figure it all out on my own. Had a couple sticky situations with the till and not understand its layout, but I know now so it won't happen again. I am also getting better with the lingo which is good. I spent the evening dinner shift running the bistro alone with just one other girl. She's underage so I was alone on the bar and taking orders, all she did was run food and clean. So that was super nice, got to learn it all and speak with customer properly which I haven't done in forever.

Customers still suck obviously. Had one guy inform me and the manager that the food we served them was no better than the 'dogs dinner'. Tbat dog must be living with mum, the ribs were unacceptable apparently. He had to excuse himself and left his wife to deal with it, because it was all too much for him. People are weird.

Ended up finishing late because the manager instead of showing me how to close decided to go home. She sprouted some bs about full time/ casual pay and clocking out on time. She is also the person who chose not to come in yesterday leaving them short staffed with 3 newbies at dinner. So she is a delight, just going to try and stay on her good side and leave the others too the gossiping. I wont be there long enough to get involved.

Then headed back home, had some pizza from work. Never going to turn down free food. And had some timtams for dessert. I know, I'm so healthy, but free food!

I also found a song that encapsulates my NaNo so downloaded that and with listening to it on repeat. It's also a great song that I completely forgot about so yay.

  • The working life

    6 November 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

It's been a few days since I updated and I have literally nothing to show for it.

I'm really enjoying work which is good. It's easy, simple and everyone is nice and gets on well. The customers are exactly the same as the uk, so most are great, a few arent.

I feel like I've had a few really busy days but all I've done is work. Which I've actually really liked. It's nice waking up knowing what im going to do, not having to plan anything just showing up and doing simple tasks.

My room is good aswell. Its basic but has everything I need. I've been surprised by how quickly I've gotten used to it. Small town life is easy and this area is beautiful. I haven't seen much yet but I have days off Wednesday and Thursday so will do some exploring then. Or maybe just spend the entire time down the beach!

For now, I'm really happy here. Everything g has fallen into place. It's easy, I love easy.

  • Birthday!

    8 November 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

It's been a super busy week but I am so glad I made the choice to come down to mission beach. Work is great, everyone is so nice and the area is beautiful. Hands down the best choice I could have made for me.

I did a bit of meal prep yesterday so woke up to overnight oats. Not quite as good as the ones at home, but still very nice.

Work was super chill today. It was busy but we all worked together and it went super fast. As soon as I walked in I was greeted to happy birthdays from everyone which was super nice as well.

At the end of my shift, one of the girls made me a cocktail to celebrate. It was half way between a sex on the beach and a tequila sunrise, very nice. And free which is top tier. The chefs also gave me a leftover jacket potato and made me some garlic bread. Not very healthy but very nice.

Overall, it's been a great birthday. Not the one I was expecting, but I knew what would happen when I chose to leave in September. I knew my 21st would be celebrated probably on my own, but the guys at work have been so nice and I dont feel alone at all. As dad would say, I've landed on my feet here and took off running.

I have two days off now so am going to explore more of this beautiful place I have moved too. A beach day is needed I think!

  • Days off

    9 November 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Tried to wake up early, failed. Work up at 7,30 instead. I had a lovely oaty breakfast before hitting the beach.

This beach is just insane. It is about 9km long so theres no breaks, no rocks, just pure sand right round the headlands on either side. I tired my best to walk some of it, figured after 20mins I must be at least near south mission. Nope, still in Wongaling. It's crazy because its tiny in population but the town extends down one road along the coast so its really long.

Did a spot of sunbathing before going for a dip. The water was warm and the floor was sandy, it felt all wrong. But was really nice. I didn't go too far as it was high tide so the beach is very flat meaning that to go deep I would have had to go a good hundred meters from shore. Which on my own was not something I was willing to do.

I then headed back and did some more admin stuff, but I did it beside the pool, so it wasn't too bad. Then just headed back into my aircon room to escape the sun and relaxed.

At 6 I met Kahan at the resort, we had a schooner (what a stupid size) and got the courtesy bus into north mission. We met James there and I had a surprisingly good night with them. They are chill, older as well so no teenage boy adolescent BS which I was thankful for. They did talk about video games a lot so I got bored a made friends with a local instead. Genuinely no clue what his name was but he'd done some travelling and had some good stories and tips for asia. The more I speak to people over here, the more I want to visit asia. Because it's so much closer here than it is to UK, a lot more people have travelled their. Most of them are extravellers, so have so many stories to tell.

Gracie then picked us back up in the courtesy bus, which was great. Headed back to the resort and had a few more there. I didn't because I know my limit, Kahan is only just 18 so he did not. He definitely has a headache this morning. Spent some time hanging out there in the gaming room. As employees we arent allowed to gamble on premises at any times so I mostly just tried to figure out how on earth it all worked. Spoiler alert I did not succeed.

As someone who had never even bought a lottery ticket, all of this stuff is very foreign to me. I think the closest I have even been to gambling is one time we were at an event that overlooked a dog racing ring or something. Mum gave me 20p to bet, if I won I got 40p of I lost, I got nothing. I remember deciding not to gamble because I was happy with my 20p. But I have been placed in gaming and sports this weekend so they are going to throw me in the deep end and let's hope is swim. I fully intend to not do anything without someone present for a while on the first shift. If they win and I give them the wrong money, I am so screwed. But we'll see what happens. One perk is if I mess it up, they'll never make me do nights in gaming!

Anyways, had a very nice night. Everyone at work is welcoming, just next time I'll try and drag a girl along too so I'm not listening to video games all night. At least I now know the differences between playstation and xbox, and why now is the time to buy an xbox not playstation. As I said before, full of useless knowledge.

  • Weekends

    12 November 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

So it turns out working behind a bar is the same in whatever country you are in.

I have been stationed in the public/sports bar the last two days and believe me when I say it is the easiest thing. Everyone is ordering schooners for the most part, or cocktails. So get easy pouring beer and fun cocktails to make.

It was super busy on Friday. I arrived and didn't stop for about 3hrs, then it went dead for the next two, but at 9pm it seriously picked up. Everywhere else locally (I say locally, within a 30min drive), closes around 9pm/10pm. But not us, we close at 4am. So anyone out for the night calls it then or comes to us for the remainder. Great as it kept us busy and the time went fast. Not great as I was supposed to finish at 12 and didn't clock out till 1.

Today however was dead all day. Well it was sort of busy between 3pm and 5pm, but then it went dead. At 6pm they asked me to work Bistro, so I was cleaning tables and running food for 3hrs until I was finally allowed on break. My supervisor had the never to ask me why I wasnt on break, while I was doing two things and there was a queue at the bar. Genuinely don't understand some people.

Later on when Bistro closed, I went back to Sports and was reay bored again. A few people came in later and I had them make me look like and idiot infront of the same supervisor as earlier. After I had to explain that I did know why I was doing, I was trying to test them as they came in drunk and I wasn't sure if I should serve them. Apparently the supervisor wouldn't have served them except for the fact that one of the group worked with us. I still think they shouldn't have been served, but it's not my call so there we go.

I finally was allowed to begin closing at 11,30 and was out by 11,45 which is lovely. I felt bad for my colleague as he was covering a shift and a large group arrived just as I was leaving. He is in for a long night, a shift I hope I never have to do.

I realised I had some eggs left so made myself a nice breakky this morning and dinner was what I got from the function. The food from that was inedible so I made food when I got back. It is astounding how often the function food is beyond vile. But it is free so it's not too bad. I also tried to capture the sky again. The moon lights the edges of the clouds beautifully but I am unable to capture the full effect with my phone camera.

  • Sunday fundays

    13 November 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

So I didn't realise it at first, but I am clearly addicted to pretty views and food. All I have to offer most days is the great food I am eating and at the moment because it is so clear, the sky.

I tried to wake up early so I actually did something with my morning, but after still being awake at 3am, I was bloody knackered when my alarm went off at 10.

Feeling like death, I rolled out of bed and realised the reason why I might be feeling so bad was it was 33° in my room. I am struggling to sleep with the aircon on as it is so loud. I've always got my eye mask and ear plugs in anyway, but it's still there. It also makes the wall vibrate slightly which is super annoying. As a result, I have taken to turning it off at night. This is great for falling asleep until I wake up sweating.

Anyways, decided to finally check out the onsite pool. Felt a thousand times better after a little swim. I'm not a huge swimmer so it didn't last long but I cooled down which is all I cared about.

I then needed food so went to the kitchen where I had a lovely conversation with a couple in their 50's. They'd moved from Birmingham 20years ago and had settled in Cairns a few years later. So talking to them was really nice. I like meeting people from different places in the world but it's also nice to talk to a brit every now and then, reminds me off home. They were super nice and had cooked a bunch of food on one of the bbq's and had made too much so guess who got some proper British sausages to add to her own food. Ended up having fried bread, sausages, mushrooms, and eggs. Plus their sausages and bacon, I was living the proper English breakky life. And as mum knows well, it is my favourite of all the breakfasts!

After speaking with them for a while, I went back and bashed out a good 2,000 words which was top tier. The aircon had also cooled my room so I was actually kinda cold once I finished.

Then cause it was a sunday, my wifi was not working well at all. The more people that are using it the worse it is, i was getting lockdown flashbacks when mum and H were working so neither dad or I could be online. Was very annoying. So instead I played some spider, officially my favourite card game to play solo. I am surprisingly good at it. I also found a puzzle in the common area, so my steal that tomorrow and make it, cause I'm a weirdo!

And then it was time to go to work. Work was not fun. I had one family of three in after 5,30pm. I was there on my own until 9,45 when I left 15mins early. It was so dead it is unbelievable. But it was dead in all sections, so we were all bored. It is much better then it's like this cause the supervisors cant go around and tell us to find something to do, because they too, cannot find anything to do.

We did end my cleaning out the beer drains! I know exciting right. That was truly revolting. The cleaner is usually diluted but they hadn't been done in forever so were almost completely blocked, so we didn't dilute it. It looked like we were pouring blood down the drains. No word of a lie, it was creepy. But one pour and you could see the grime dissolving down the drain, dangerous stuff. We had to clean out hands thoroughly after as it dissolves skin very easily as well. But that was probably the highlight of my shift. Not great.

I clocked off and was invited for a drink by one of my friends, but then I realised who they were drinking with and choose not too. It is surprising how many of my colleagues have asked me if I smoke weed as though everyone does it. Unfortunately, a large amount of people do. Just to clarify, I dont and dont want to. But that wont stop them asking. So I decided to skip the inevitable and head back.

Because it was a sunday, everyone was in bed preparing to sleep as most start of at 7am tomorrow morning. This means the wifi was working again properly. It also means that I got sucked into social media which I haven't checked all weekend, and its midnight and I'm still awake. But such is life. I have a day off tomorrow and so can relax then!

  • South mission

    14 November 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Decided to use my day to wander down to South Mission beach. 35°, direct sunlight at 1.5hrs later I realised the mistake id made.

South mission is very small, basically just housing for the rich. It is also very pretty, sitting in a little bay so protected from most of the winds. I stopped at the only cafe there and had lunch which was much needed. I didn't bring water with me because I didn't realise how far it was. That was my biggest mistake. Half way through I decided it was easier to keep going and grab something when I arrived rather than turning back.

Unfortunately I found out that mum was right, I probably shouldn't have swum in the sea the other day. Though there are no spotting recently, crocodiles and jellyfish are ever present and warned against. Down in south mission there is a little area cornered off by nets that it is safe to swim in. I didn't break any laws or anything, but it is advised against. So that's good to know!

It took around 4hrs from when I left to getting back so I was very tired by that point. Enjoyed some lovely aircon in my room before heading to the pool again.

The temperature had not dropped but the sun was past the point of directly above us, so was more bearable. I choose not to swim, instead I settled down to do some writing and watch the sunset. A photo is enclosed of the pool.

That was until I got a message from my friend at work asking if I could cover. And because money, I obviously said yes. Definitely a good choice as it was not very busy, so I basically got free money for covering the sports bar for 3hrs. There were a few people in but the focus was on room service tonight.

A tour that does the east coast stops in Mission beach on mondays. As a result a large group of backpackers arrived late evening and always come for food. Now because they are backpackers, room service is a luxury so they all ordered it. Nothing like 20 separate orders all at once. Thankfully because I was in sports, I just covered gaming as well while the others dealt with it.

I clocked off at 9 and headed back to my room. Ended up being unable to sleep for various reasons and was still awake at 2am, not fun but there we go.

  • North Mission

    15 November 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Made the treck up to North Mission Beach today. It took less time but was more of a boring walk that to south mission. I'm not sure why, maybe I was just tired and wasnt really feeling it.

You can just about see in one of the photos the skyjumpers that land on North Mission. That was pretty cool to see and I'll try and book it for sometime soon as it's the main thing to do up here.

I also saw these colours patterns on the sand. Have no clue what made them and dont really wanna know.

Thne headed back, had some popcorn while watching TV I downloaded and sat by the pool to write some more and cool off. I did not snd up writing much which was a pain but I'll try again tomorrow.

Finished off the day with some chili beans! Top tier. Cannt go wrong. Tasted great. Trusted mums recipe and boom. Not as good as hers but that's cause I cant cook! Batch made a load so that's food sorted for the rest of the week.

I turned in early as i was exhausted from not sleeping and had my alarm set for 5,30am tomorrow.

  • Breakfast vibes

    17 November 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Now, I've realised I am a morning person. I prefer to wake up early and get out and about before the day really begins. I was placed on breakfast which means I started at 6,30am, I was looking forward to it. It was not interesting.

At the Hilton if we had anything less than 80people in for breakfast, it was dull. I had 12 on Wednesday and 15 on Thursday. I was bored to say the least.

Once done with breakfast at 12, I also get to help with lunch until 3pm. Cause why not. It was not fun either. 2 very easy shifts in the end so cant complain too much. The sunrise is also very pretty outside my room.

On Thursday I also managed to make an ok looking coffee. It is the best pattern I have managed so far! I'm on breakfast again next week so I'm gonna keep trying and teach myself how to barista.

  • Fridays

    19 November 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Yes that is my only photo of today. But today has not been great so theres that.

I woke up at 7am and could not get back to sleep. So got up and went for a walk in a direction I haven't gone yet. Discovered a fish and chip shop so might get a chippy next week. Then headed back to find woolies which doesn't open till 8am so grabbed myself an iced coffee and a muffin for breakfast and waited. Because it was so early it was only 28° so was nice to sit outside in the shade and not melt.

Then did my shopping and headed back to my air conditioned room. Genuinely not sure what I did now. Just vibed in the cool air and rested.

I started work at 3pm and honestly why. Fridays are seriously busy between 2 and 6 so have only one person on the sports bar, sure why not. Anyways was not pleased. Come 6pm Eloise arrived to help and it was so dead. Was bored again for a bit before helping bistro. Then went to the function to help there.

No clue what happened while I was at the function but I came back and there are had been a huge argument between two of the staff. As a result the guy closing had walked out. So guess who got to work until 4am to cover him. Yep, me. Started at 3pm finsihed at 4,30am. Was not fun, genuinely thought I was going to fall asleep at 2am but made it.

  • Saturdays

    19 November 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After being woken up a thousand times, I finally got up at 11am. Probably ended up having only like 5 or 6 hrs sleep which is not enough but there we go. I had to decide last night which was more important, sleep or food. I chose sleep and as a result was starving so made myself a lunch and breakfast at the same time. Top tier, highly recommend.

Tried not to fall asleep before heading to work again for 3pm. When I arrived found out the guy who threw the hissy fit wsnt coming in again. So instead of covering him, they just switched one of the people already on to close. This would have been an issue even if we weren't already a person down. One of the other quit this week with no warning so we were down 3 members of staff. 4 people to run three bars on a saturday night. Who thought this was a good idea.

Anyways, I worked both sports and gaming bars while the other three dealt with the bomb site that was bistro and the kitchen. It had been busy all day, and chefs can be fairly temperamental on a good day so was very glad I was away from all that drama. All in all a pretty good shift. Busy, but not chaotic for me and I got to close down early cause it died at 9,30 which is a plus.

  • I feel like death

    21 November 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Was completely exhausted when I arrived at work yesterday. The colleague who threw a hissy fit chose not to come in again so that was fun. Ended up not finding anyone free on an hours notice. I offered, but instead got asked to cover breakfast monday Tuesday. So instead of getting 2 days off now, I get them Wednesday thursday.

It's been a very long week so kinda wish it was over but there we go.

Breakfast was super easy, only have 6 people in all 3 hrs so that was kinda dull but all good. We had a huge inspection planned for today, so was just cleaning everything. It's funny how much stuff comes apart when you are bored and like to break things.

It was a very nice and easy shift thankfully as I am running on about 5 hours. I love doing clopens!

When I got back I found out I am getting a roommate. Cant say I'm thrilled. I'm liking my free space but there we go. I don't know anything about her expect that she'll be working in the prawn farm. As long as she doesn't make everything smell like fish, we should be good. I'm also kinda annoyed about it as I was going to move in with a friend from work who wanted to move. But instead of calling last week, they forgot. If they had then we'd together instead of me having a complete stranger moving in but guess we'll see what happens.

I am now just tired and trying to decided if I actually need to go shopping or if I can last another day. I do need to go, I just need to force myself. I want to sleep!

Also my cards finally arrived, so thank you for those!

  • Damp mornings

    22 November 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Woke up. Realised my uniform hadn't dried thanks to the storm. Cried. Took my uniform off the line and did the only think a dumbass like myself could think of at 5,30am when she had work in an hour. Placed my shirt in the microwave and prayed it evaporated off the water. It did not. Cried again. Ate my overnight oats. Put on damp uniform that I was still ringing water from and went to work. 2 and a half hours later I was almost dry.

Breakfast was super dead until 8 backpackers showed up at exactly 10am. Breakfast finishes at 10am. So of course we let them have a half hour eating before we chucked them out. Made my life more annoying but that's backpackers for you (and I am allowed to day that as I am one) (technically!!).

I did have a lovely conversation with two gentlemen who came in for breakky. Realised half way through the conversation they were the owners of ALH (the people than own the resort) and were the people we were stressing over the last few days. Sounds like their inspection went well and apparently if I want I am in the ALH system so I can now work in any of there 350 companies across Australia. So I somehow managed to land a job at the Australian equivalent of the Hilton enterprise by accident. Hilton for international, ALH for Australia. Bomb.

They also said I make a very good coffee and to seriously keep it in mind when I'm travelling around, so that's good. One of the two then spoke to Steve (the big boss of this resort and the guy who hired me) and I am 99.9% sure I came up in the conversation because they kept glancing at me. Unfortunately they were outside so it was impossible for me to eavesdrop. After Steve did ask me a bunch of questions and stuck around watching me for a bit so that was unnerving. The two guys were very nice though so that's good.

Once I finished work I went and did a food shop. I went with a list (I know, I'm impressed too) and stuck to that list (even more impressed). I got to the till and nearly cried. Like I've got a good week and a bit of food here and if you minus the $30 sim it's not that bad but it hurt handing over that much money. I also paid my rent yesterday so am very glad my pay is coming in tomorrow.

I am sick of not receiving my messages because optus is really bad out here. So bought a new sim for telstra which is supposed to be better for rural. Most of the guys at work have it so fingers crossed my phone starts connecting because otherwise no one can message or call me and that is a problem.

Then chilled in my nice air con room and figured out how I am going to store my stuff in only half a room.

  • Writing mania

    23 November 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

I had to Google how to spell nephew. I tried everything. I thought maybe it was a 'ue' not an 'ew', I couldn't figure out if it was 'ph' or 'f'. And one point I thought maybe there was a silent 'a'. Why is english so HARD!!!

Today was a day for relaxing. After coming back from the sunrise at the beach I waited for someone from the RSA to call me so I could finally finish that thing. After the most awkward conversation of my life, I passed. I now have both my RSA and my RSG! Bomb, it only took me a month!!

From there I went for a little swim because it wasnt yet that hot out. Had a chat with the cleaner at the site. She is honestly one of the nicest people I've ever met.

Then went to the coffee shop and wrote. Two hours later, I had nearly 3,000 words and a sore neck. Took a break to eat something because I'd been awake for 6hours and it was time for lunch! Yes, I ate lunch at 10,30. Wild. And went right back to writing. A further 2,000 words and I had a headache.

Got kicked out of the cafe at 1pm as they closed which was annoying cause then I went back to my room and suffered. Whatever illness the others have, I think I got aswell. So felt like death for ages, tried not to fall asleep because doing that would mean I didnt sleep tonight. So continued to suffer alone.

Made some food for dinner. Basically just cooked a bunch of veg and stuck it all together in a pan. Not very inventive but I think itll make a good pasta sauce as well as soup which I had it as tonight because I could not be bothered. I also used two pans, a small achievement but I'm proud of myself.

  • Couple days

    27 November 2022, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Been a few days since I updated. Not much is really happening down here. Just working and not much else.

I am beginning to feel a little restless here. Its beautiful but too hot to move. So I dont end up going out to see anything. It's also impossible to see anything without a car. As a result I feel like I'm not doing much on my days off which is ok but just kinda dull.

I went back to the coffee shop on Thursday. They are really nice and I love the vibe of the place. It fits with the feel of this place, chill and sorta hippy.

I then added some pasta to the sauce thing I made the other day so had some pasta. Not very inventive but you cant go wrong with simple.

I have a massive cold which is really annoying me. All I want to do is lie in bed and sleep but have to work. Yay.

There were some older people staying at the park the last few days. There were 4 couples and it sounded like they were doing a bit of travelling together in their campervan which sounded so cool. They were great and one of them wrote me a little note for when I go up into the Teritory, as someone to contact for work. A little bit more networking, might help when I'm up there next year.

Work was weird last night. All the crazies came out. It was super dead all day until 11,30 when they all came down. So I ended up staying an extra hour which wasnt fun. But I did get in the good books of the supervisor who doesn't really like me so at least theres that. I had a drink with some colleagues after shift aswel so feel like I'm doing a little more now.

I knew that I was moving rural but we live rural in the uk. There it's like 30mins to the station and then 10mins into Brighton. Here is one bus for an hour to get to the equivalent of like Burgess Hill. I'm beginning to wonder whether I will stay for as long as initially intended, but we will see.

  • I clearly hate myself

    28 November 2022, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

So I may or may not have just cried over my own story.

I've mentioned it a few times, particularly recently as it is NaNoWriMo. But I write, very badly and with little success. As mum knows well from the amount of times I have spoken about something religiously for like a week and then never mentioned it again. I have never once finished a story, always abandoning them cause I got bored, they were taking too long or i ended up writing the entire thing in my head and never on paper.

Today I finished my story. And I cried. Not because I finished it, no relief would have been a better reason for such ugly crying. No instead I cried over the end. I was writing it, crying.

So now I have a complete story with an ending I hate and love. I change a bunch of things half way through it, so it needs serious editing but the plot is down. Except the ending. I have that but I hate it.

I am a lover of romance and fantasy, and I dislike sad endings. So what did I do? I wrote a sad ending.

I have no clue what I am going to do tomorrow. I will probably end up writing a different, happy ending. As I have a plan for a happy ending I just chose not to write that.

So other than that, my days been great.

This last week has been difficult, lots of ups and downs. But I feel a little better today. Hopefully tomorrow I will feel better again still. My cold was worse this morning but is ok now sl that's nice. And it was overcast and drizzly all day so it was only about 27° out which makes such a difference when it's been 30°+ all week.

Who knows what will happen tomorow, I don't have a plan for it. But I feel as though I will be woken up at some point tonight. My roommate was supposed to arrive at 2pm today, which was 7hrs ago. I have no clue what happened so that isnt helping my anxiety over a stranger moving in all that much. But meh. Today has been an emotional roller coaster.

  • Nailed it

    30 November 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

Once more I have proved my supremacy by writing 50,000 words in November. Two years running!!

I was very proud when I realised I'd made it. All written and began the editing. Nailed it!

I had the breakfast shift which was kinda dead but chill. It continued being dead until 1ish when it began to rain. As a result all the tradies came down. Cause when work gets rained out, hit the bar. Had a few funny convos with them and the regulars. I'm beginning to recognise people and their orders now which is making them all happy. Still have them ripping me apart for being british but nicely rather than rudely.

I made more chilli beans which was an entire vibe. I added a courgette in, which doesn't add much but was better than it going off. I really love chili beans.

There was also a frog just giving on the chopping board when I came back. Scared the bejesus out of me. The noise that tiny thing made, insane.
