      Dijon

      21 Ocak, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

      Dijon, France. Non merci.

      18 Kasım 2023, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Crossing the Swiss / French border around 1530, we finally arrive in Dijon, France around 1900. Noting this is the 2nd last night of the tour, and our first of two nights in Paris, a small group of us head out on a tram to Dijon square. It's Saturday night. It's busy. Getting a table for 7 is next to impossible.

We eventually find a bar that also serves food. Hardly ideal for the children in our group though, nearing 2030, it'll have to do. Mason, our lead navigator, does a spectacular job of leading us to correct tram numbers and finding possible venues to dine. He is 12. I'm 45. I hang my head in shame and accept navigation and I are never going to be mates.

Tired, exhausted, we head back to our hotel. I decide to enjoy a long hot shower. Sometime near the conclusion of my shower, I am horrified / mortified to find a man entering my bathroom. The stuff of horror movies I feel. There's nowhere to hide. I am completely starkers. Like most of us are when showering. I scream. I yell. "What the f*ck!", grab a towel and chase this man out of my room.

I see the room filled with steam, which had caused the fire alarm to trip. I calm myself and realise I've now transformed the bedroom into a steam room. Also. Heard of exhaust fans France?

The mortifying experience continues as the next entourage, tour director Luigi and hotel representatives knock at my door to see if I'm alright. I yell through a crack in the door. It was the steam!! I don't smoke!! I'm not okay! I've just been viewed in my birthday costume by a complete stranger!

I learn over breakfast the following morning, several guests had assembled in the foyer to evacuate, anticipating a fire. Not only am I overwhelmingly humiliated for the intrusion and exposure, I've also interrupted an entire hotel. I was just showering! Luigi assures me the only issue he has is not knowing it was my room, and him not being the first responder. And how lucky the hotel employee was to view such a beautiful woman. Not reassured, I accept I can only move on.

Dijon, thanks for the mustard. That's about all I've got for you.

      en avant pour Paris.

Two days - 500 miles, phew!

      9 Eylül 2022, Fransa ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Well me muckers, how bin thee all? Were off to France, notably the right hand bit of the Rhone Alps and then south and left a bit into Provence. That's the plan, but who knows whether it will happen, weather and time permitting I'm guessing.

Well we get off well and down to the M25 when the heavens opened big time and we am driving along a river basically, well scary! Eventually we gain dry ground and get to the tunnel in good time and cross OK.

We drive along on the 'wrong' side of the road for an hour or two and he finds us a stop for the night in a town along the way. We then are aware of the death of our good Queen Liz which is so unexpected and very sad, so we drink to her reign and then apart from a bit of rain we all have a good night's kip.

Friday we are in transit again along the highways of France avoiding the extortionate toll motorways (cuz he's a bit of a skinflint) , which makes for slow progress but the villages and towns are interesting en route. Then after going through the umpteenth village at a steady 50 killys per hour, he is a bit too late on me brakes entering one, and I get flashed by a camera! Well to say he ain't happy is an understatement! Teks him a few killys to calm down. Quite noticeable are the sunflower and sweetcorn crops in the fields have all been ruined by the scorching weather and fields are burnt to a crisp. We are overnghting again on a motorhome aire in a small village which is very peaceful. Tomorrow thank gawd we aim to complete the journey to Annecy by the lake to a campsite for a stop of three nights to recuperate from our travels. I'm gonna need it too cuz it's a knackering journey.

Day 40 - Grandchamp to Champlitte

      30 Mayıs 2023, Fransa ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

After all my moaning and complaining; today was a perfect pilgrim day. As Bruce will say, along with many others, "The Camino provides." My accommodation last night was very special; a warm, welcoming and interesting host (Rene); excellent food; comfy bed; etc. - exactly what I needed. The walking today was pleasant and under 20 km! I saw my largest Roman bath to date, in Leffond, and tried to capture the white flowers blooming in the water plants in the Le Salon river. Along the Path, I met up with a young Italian woman, whom I'd met briefly yesterday, who finished up her work in the UK and is walking home via the Via Francigena! We separated, as she'd had a tough night camping and was taking a shortcut. That was just as well, as her pace far exceeds mine 😄. Further along, as I left the church in Leffond, a very nice woman approached me, and we had a lovely chat. Then, as I was leaving Leffond, a group of people called out to me and offered me a drink. My first instinct is to say "no thank you", BUT, as a pilgrim, I need to be open to all experiences, so I said, "Yes, please." Low and behold, there was another pilgrim with them, a Brit, they had also invited in as he was walking past! I spent the next hour and a half having a really lovely time chatting and drinking a couple of beers. As an Australian, I felt that obligation, LOL. Finally, Champlitte is beautiful, and the large chalet is now a museum. P.S. I should have mentioned that the supermarket here is open, and I've got my supplies for the next couple of days!!!!!!!Okumaya devam et

      Saône pur

      25 Temmuz 2022, Fransa ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

      Clos St. Louis

      12 Haziran 2023, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Our day finished with one of the highlights of the tour so far. We visited a Premier Cru winery in the village of Fixin - the Clos St. Louis. The owner and winemaker Phillip Bernard took us on a tour of the vineyard and the winery, followed by a tasting in his 17th century cellar. His family has owned the winery since the 1800's. The wines were great. We then had dinner (and wine) in his house and it was sensational.

Phillip is a member of The Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin (Fraternity of Knights of the Wine-Tasters' Cup), an exclusive fraternity of Burgundy wine connoisseurs. And he's proud of it!

      A Day in Dijon

      1 Ekim 2023, Fransa ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The time had finally come for us to say a final goodbye to Konstanz. The problem was that the departure time was too early. Far too early. When your train to Zurich is scheduled to leave soon after 7 am, there was certainly no time for sleep ins or leisurely breakfasts.

Since we were going to miss breakfast, the hotel compensated by making up a little "lunch bag" for each of us. The only problem with that is that it added to the copious amount of luggage we were already struggling to manhandle to the railway station.

At least the train arrived (precisely) on time, and to our relief the carriage was only partially full. And so it should have been - after all it was 7 am on a Sunday morning.

We enjoyed a comfortable trip back through the Swiss countryside to Zurich HBF (central station). That is where we faced the challenge of trying to find the correct platform for the train to Paris. With a complete absence of Information Offices and departure details, we were not even sure we were on the correct station.

By some sequence of luck and good management we did manage to stumble into the Paris bound train. It was even more good fortune to discover that our carriage was almost empty. We even had enough space to sensibly store our luggage.

Soon we were gliding silently out of the station and on our way to Dijon. The countryside outside was hiding under a thick fog, so we could not see very far. It was only when we reached the city of Basel that things changed dramatically. A huge crush of passengers clambered into our carriage, filling every empty seat. Luggage was jammed into anywhere available. This seems to be the recurring pattern in post Covid train travel.

The driver managed to spur the motors into propelling the train at an eye watering 318 kph. That was quite an experience. Such was the speed of the train that we arrived in Dijon around midday.

We stepped out of the train into 26C heat and bright sunshine. So much for all the winter clothing we had dragged all around Europe. Maggie and I had visited this city several times in the past and had very favourable memories of the place.

We walked the short distance from the station to our hotel, and arrived to find the door securely locked. This was an Aparthotel, and checkin was not possible till 4 pm. That was a bit of a problem, until two other guests came out of the hotel, leaving the door ajar. We jumped at the unexpected turn of events, dragging our luggage into the foyer. And that is where it stayed while we spent the rest of the day exploring this historic city.

Unlike the Germans who renovate every historic building, so that they look like they were built yesterday, the French are not afraid to let buildings age gracefully. Peeling paint and cracked timbers are a testimony to what each building has been through.

"Da vorne sind unsere Plätze 👉"

      6 Ağustos 2023, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

      7:00 Wecker

      "anterrei please"
      "pardon?"
"I need to see the anterrei-pass!"
      -
      "Ahh Interrail ! "
