      4 Hong Kong Markets

      11 November 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Our Hong Kong guide, Patrick, was excellent. His jokes kept us on our toes, but he shared a lot about his life, the culture, politics, and history.

As part of our tour, he took us to 4 different markets in Hong Kong: Stanley Market, a bird market, a jade market, and a flower market.

Along the way he asked if we had any questions. “As a matter of fact, I do,” piped a woman with a strong Brooklyn accent. “You’re taking us to all these markets, but I wanna know where the Chinatown is.”

As the bus full of passenger erupted o to giggles, Patrick calmly explained that, “Everywhere is Chinatown, madame. This is Hong Kong. You are in China!”

You’d think that would have been e Pugh, but the lady wouldn’t back down. She insisted for the rest of the tour that, “Hong Kong is known for its Chinatown. I read it online.”

“Where did you read this, madame? Please tell me. I’m Chinese. I live here. If we had a Chinatown, I would know.”

Hoo whee! I’m sure Patrick will work this anecdote into his routine! People will probably think it’s a joke, but I was there. That lady was real.

      Anyway…

In Stanley Market, we saw lots of “neon” lights made with LEDs, along with electronics, and general souvenirs. Our guide said locals jokingly call it “Caucasian Town.”

“There are Chinatowns all over the world,”he explained. “There ought to be a Caucasian Town here in China, right?”

The bird market was a narrow alley filled with an array of bird cages, birds, as well as crickets, grasshoppers, and meal worms to feed them. Patrick said birds were especially popular pets for men.

Every morning, a man will take his bird to the nearby park. “Man to man conversation. Bird to bird conversation.”

Patrick said his dad “walked” their bird every morning and always came home in a better mood.

I didn’t take too many photos at the jade market, although it was very pretty. Patrick warned us that, “the jade merchants are very pushy” and he as right. I merely glanced at some bracelets, and the next thing you know, a woman was sliding them onto my wrists. They were pretty, but way out of my budget, like $200 and up for a bracelet.

The flower market was beautiful and smelled lovely, too. All in all, visiting these open air markets in Hong Kong was a colorful experience.

Day 7, Friday, 17th The Big Adventure

      17 November 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Military precision: Grandad & Grandma were up and at your home at 0930. Your Mum had the plan all in place for the four of us to go into Central for her appointment to see an osteopath about her carpel tunnel symptoms, back etc. Your night had been ‘ok’, and we managed to catch the 1040 ferry. Your Dad was feeling & looking somewhat better; he was going to work from your place while we were away.
You were placed in the front pack, and as usual dozed off, and we set for your catamaran trip. We walked up to Central Health, arriving 30 mins early, which was fortunate as it gave time for nappy changing, a quick feed then Grandma Trish & Grandad Euan had their trainer wheels 'kicked out from under them', so to speak!
We loaded you into the front pack (you gorgeous tiny person), and off we set to walk around the block for an hour! The only draw back was that it was lunch time in HK! Literally thousands of people from office blocks rushing to get lunch! Phew, It was difficult to walk along the footpaths, dodge vehicles, many of which were stopped waiting for their owners to return to be driven away. The chauffeurs looked bored, possibly saved only by their phones from total insanity.
Dusty, you were perfect as I walked around in the noise and rushing things! Just before 1pm we decided to go back to clinic! Just as well. You had had enough. We took you out if the front pack in time for Mum to rescue you with a feed and several changes! Back to Pret for sandwiches then the Lamna ferry home. You made all but the last few minutes happily.
Home to 93 Po Wah Yuen, where food and kicking  was achieved for you. What a star! Grandparents dismissed for the afternoon- back to the office roof! Lovely here - 24c cuppa & reading in the late sun, and of course writing up the album. Dinner around 6.30 pm, all going well. 🤞 we get back to your house to find that your afternoon had been hideous. We would give anything to find out the cause of colic, and of course, the cure! Dinner in shifts.
Mum & Dad tired out. They are so amazing.

      Victoria Peak

      11 November 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

We took a funicular up to the top of Victoria Peak, but it was a drizzly day in Hong Kong, so the view kept disappearing.

The floor of the funicular tram is wavy, so when we were at a steep angle, Larry was able to stand up… but it looked crooked. So clever!

We had lunch at the historic Victoria Peak restaurant, which felt like a ski lodge with Asian touches.

Afterward, I was too full to try eating an eggette, but don’t they look interesting? The flavors intrigue me, too: coriander, bacon and egg, peanut butter, and even chocolate.

      Maybe next time!

      Bamboo Scaffolding

      11 November 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

Just as in Japan, people drive on the left in Hong Kong. But unlike Japan, I saw signs on the pavement reminding us to “look left.”

I saw a lot of folks wearing wide brimmed straw hats, but what really intrigued me was the bamboo scaffolding; it’s everywhere!

I expected hustle and bustle, but I didn’t expect all the butterflies. Hong Kong is full of them.

      Floating Village

      11 November 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

We took a sampan ride through the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, a part of Hong Kong famous for floating seafood restaurants in a harbor protected from heavy storms.

A cluster of fishing boats moor together here, as well, creating a floating village. These days only 200 or so people live there, but the number used to be much higher.Baca lagi

      Day 9. Sunday 19th Nov

      19 November 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Lazy morning for the support crew!
Dave your Dad was delegated to settling you while your Mum Lucy got a bit of sleep.
Grandparents went for a long walk up to the windmill! Weather lovely. We stayed in the shade as much as possible. Not too many people around. The pagoda is a nice spot. The view from there is over to Aberdeen where your parents' Lamma office is.
Regrouped at about 12md. We bought a fillet of beef for about 360 Hk $ for dinner (half for the freezer). Dusty, you were up and down all afternoon; mostly up🙂
You loved your time kicking on the nappy changing pad. You also loved Louise Illingworth's Rupert Bear that she had knitted for you.
Grandad Euan & your Mum spent time trying to fix some ‘Ikea drawers, and Grandma Trish and your Mum tried to sort the clothes( that you no longer fit) out into bags, to be passed on to others in the Lamma Mamas group.
We had a lovely long chat with Cecily Munro and caught up with all the Munro news. David Munro got to see you too, (via Messenger).
You were such a considerate baby this evening. Your Mum even got to eat dinner without interruption! Your Dad cooked it perfectly on the BBQ. Both your parents are very good cooks, so you have a lot to look forward to when you get to solids!
We are trying for an earlier night tonight. You dad has work in the Aberdeen Office tomorrow.

      Day 15, 25th Nov. 2023

      25 November 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Saturday am and a relaxed weekend day. We woke fairly early, lazed around the office having a leisurely breakfast and sitting in the roof balcony. Lucy & Dave were having a much needed slow time. Dusty, you are the quintessential non morning person; no actively, then come afternoon, and frequently at night, it’s all on! Today was no exception. The plan was for you and your Mum & Dad to come up to the office, but you slept, 💤. I had a lovely chat to Gill Salt in Bannockburn and eventually the Lammna Cassells family arrived. We went for walk up to the community garden at Tai Peng, looking across to Yung Shue Wong Village, up to the ridge, not far from the windmill.
Remind me never to complain about gardening in Palmie, ever again. Apart from marauding wild pigs, no water source close by, very sandy soil, rampant growth, typhoons etc, what’s not to like about gardening on Lamma?
It was a lovely walk. You were in the front pack with your Dad, but both of you were a bit too warm. We stopped off for an ice cream on the way home.
We returned to 93 Po Wah Yuen where, once you were set free you were in high spirits. We gave you a bath and you rewarded us ( especially your Mum) with beautiful smiles! The best yet!!! Then you reverted to your afternoon self🙂. About 15 attempts at putting you down so your Mum could get some sleep failed dismally. Your Dad got about an hours sleep!
Grandad was busy sorting out the mirror hanging for the bathroom. It’s now in place and looking good. Off you all went to friends place for an early dinner. You Mum looks as though she will be asleep the moment she sits down!
Grandad & I went to the Thai restaurant at the base of the steps into the village. We tried the pomelo salad and shrimps. We asked for it to not have chilli, but that was never going to happen! The following chicken was ok, but a tiny portion. The glutinous rice was just one big clump, but placed on a
banana skin. I did enjoy the fresh coconut. I wished I could scrape out the coconut flesh though!
Back home to the office after some minor purchases in the village. We had toast & jam (using the new toaster) followed by almond croissants and a cuppa! Excellent. Another day with you and your first real smiles. What bliss.

      Day 17. 27 th Nov

      27 November 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Today was predictably the opposite of yesterday. We stayed at home to give Lucy and Dusty a rest from yesterday’s ups and downs.
It seem to work. Dusty and Mum had two sleeps in the morning. It was 25c and felt very hot.
I started cleaning out the pot plant collection on your lovely roof, by shifting them out from the balcony wall and throwing the broken pots away and scrubbing the tiles. It was so hot on the roof I had to leave some for later, but the mosquitoes caught up with me then. Tomorrow I will get potting soil and bamboo stakes to support some of the plants.
Dusty, you were a treasure all day! We had lovely times as you tried out your bouncer for awhile, and you loved your bath again today. What a sweetheart. You did lots of feeding and exercise, so all together a lovely day. Thanks Dusty.

HKG Tag 1: Tempel und Kowloon

      18 November 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

      Day 19, 29th of Nov. 2023

      29 November 2023, Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Another big morning out in Central for the Grand Parents with Lucy & Dusty. We took the 0930 ferry. Your Mum had been busy trying to coordinate the collection of the Christmas Tree. Yes, of course it’s a ‘real’ one in a stand. We always had a 'real' one on Palmerston North till your Mum went to Wellington when we slackened our standards and bought a large artificial one.
The tree arrived so now they have the record player in boxes, ready to be put in the already assembled shelves, and space to be made for the tree! I think that you will enjoy it as much as your Mum. Next year may be a different scenario🤣. The Grandparents walked you around the block for 45 mins. We pulled the pin on shopping on Pottinger Lane for Christmas decorations as you had had enough in the front pack. The afternoon heralded the introduction of a new sleep regimen! Your Mum has an app. with lots of good suggestions. 🤞well and truly crossed that this gives you more settled sleep. The Grandparents finished the re-potting of pot plants. Nice dinner of U.S.A. salmon. You were actually asleep when we left at 2000😘
