Day 48: Campagnano to La Storta

      Yesterday in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

What a weird day of weather! I had sweat dripping from my forehead before 8 a.m.; not long after that, the clouds came over, and it was raining around 11 a.m. Then, the clouds remained, but it got incredibly humid, and I was back to the sweating forehead issue. After that, the wind picked up and cooled things down. It was a bit of a roller coaster. I didn't see any pilgrims today, but I did meet a lovely couple from the Sunshine Coast who have cycled from Amsterdam - final destination: Rome (they will be there now). Most of the walk today was through the Parco Regionale Di Veio. It was fantastic, the trees were brilliant, there were both Etruscan and Roman archaeological sites and, maybe because it is Monday, I had the place to myself - what a gift. P.S. I saw a murder of crows this afternoon and tried to get a photo - but, of course, they all flew off as soon as I raised my phone to take the shot.Read more

      Mont Seuc - Dolomites 2

      June 9 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

After our first cable car to Mont Seceda, we took the cable car on the other side of the town of Ostisei. This cable car ascended to 2,100 metres. The view, once again, was stunningly beautiful.
We then got bus 350 back to Bolzano. The stop is just outside the entrance to Hotel Magdalena Hof.
The Hotel has given us a public transport and museum pass for the duration of our stay, which meant our 2 hours on the buses today was cost free.
We showered and then got bus 8 into Bolzano township where we had some dinner.
Tomorrow is a day to explore Bolzano township.

      Tre Cime di Lavaredo 3️⃣🗻

      June 9 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

      Lorenzago Di Cadore - Venetien

      June 9 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

- Also bleiben wir grad stehen!

      Piomboni Camping Village

      June 9 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

This wasn’t plan-A but we have come right across to the Rimini coast at Ravenna, staying for one, or possibly two, nights at Piomboni Camping Village. The decision will probably depend on how noisy it gets tonight.

We spent the first 2 hours here emptying the van completely - I mean completely - spraying ant killer everywhere, then sweeping up the dead bodies and putting everything carefully back into the van after emptying all the bags and so on.

      Hot work.

It is humid here so we went to the beach, which is, well, pretty horrible - all rented loungers and bars with loud music but the sun is due to shine tomorrow so maybe we’ll get used to it! 😀

The campsite is nice - with pine trees offering shade - but our pitch is very tight. I very nearly lost a wing mirror on a tree getting into it. Luckily all ok. Phew!

Plan-A was to stay up in the mountains south of Piacenza but the weather forecast for that area was terrible so we decided to come here instead.

At the supermarket on the way here we bought a new mat for the van - 2 euros on special offer! Bargain.

Now sitting drinking a lovely bottle of frizzante wine that we bought for 5 euros in the little shop in Garbagne last night.

Day 47: Sutri to Campagnano di Roma

      June 9 in Italy ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

It only got to 30° today, and a very strong cooling wind came up in the afternoon. I'm not saying I'm coping better in the heat, but I'm trying to make the best of it. I was able to leave at 7 a.m., which helped make the walk (25.75 km) cooler at the start and got me to my accommodation earlier! I didn't see one pilgrim today, but a car pulled up alongside me (yes, there was some road walking) and wished me well (buen passaggio) - which was lovely. I expected to see fewer cars on the road as it's Sunday, but I encountered both buses and trucks as well as at least one maniac driver (I had to jump into the bushes on the side of the road). There wasn't as much shade as the past few days, but the trees were really beautiful to look at as were the mountains in the distance. Sutri has both an Etruscan archaeological site and a rock amphitheatre - I had a quick look on my way out of town this morning.Read more

      Dramatic Dolomites - 1

      June 9 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

We decided to go to the Dolomites and hope for good weather. We were blessed with a lovely day to explore this amazing landscape.
First we caught the bus from outside our Hotel (free of charge) for the hour's drive to the alpine town of Ostisei. A beautiful drive through the mountains and past torrents of water.
We got the cable car to Mont Seceda (2,500 metres) and walked along a ridge so we could see over to the next valley. Quite cold, however, we warmed ourselves with hot drinks at the mountain top cafe.
We descended in the cable car and bought another ticket to Mont Seuc.
This whole area reminds us of Germany much more than Italy!
This morning has been a highlight (one of many) of our trip to date.

      Bye bye Italy

      June 9 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      Ancona to Bolzano

      June 8 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Another day of train travel and we are delighted to say, our last! We left Ancona, heading for Bologna where we had 16 mins to swap trains. Fortunately the next train was delayed 10 mins - what joy, because we had to go up and down various levels to find platform 16.
We sat next to a delightful man - Professor of Pure Mathematics (Italian) living for 30 years in the USA. He was speaking at Trento University to research students.
The train trip from the southern Puglia region to northern Italy has been fascinating. To see the dramatically different landscapes - flat down south to this region with majestic mountains and lush vegetation. We can also see the changes in socio-economic status between the poorer south and the obviously wealthy north.
We waited for 30 mins for a taxi at Bolzano train station in drizzling rain but we were rewarded with our destination - Hotel Magdalena Hof. Kerrie swam in the hotel pool and we then enjoyed a delicious meal at the Hotel outdoor restaurant. We have 5 nights here before we start our next bike trip. Tomorrow, weather permitting, we will explore the Dolomites.

      Lago di Sorapis 💧

      June 8 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C
