      At the monastery

      Today we passed our first 100km on this camino and sure it is exactly like we had imagined it, namely it's impossible to imagine in advance what will come on your path. New friends, connection with friends of friends, atmosphere among our fellow pilgrims, all it's just hard to describe.
      This afternoon we arrived at a monastery where we had the locally brewed beer, we ate dinner in one of the sleeping rooms and were served by a father.
      And on our way here we passed the town named after Simon Bolivar who had lived here.      Læs mere

      Motto des Tages: Meine Heimat ist die ganze Welt (Seneca)

      Nach der Zwischenlandung in Stuttgart ging es nach 2 Stunden Aufenthalt pünktlich nach Bilbao weiter. Über die schweizerischen Alpen, vorbei am Montblanc, dann ein Stück über die Pyrenäen. Alle noch schneebedeckt. Um 14:30 Uhr Landung in Bilbao. Bei 38 Grad ging es dann mit dem Stadtbus in die Altstadt zur Unterkunft. Nach 2,5 Kilometern Fußmarsch kamen wird dann an, sofort ab unter die Dusche, andere Sachen an und dann ab zum gekühlten Cerveza. Vielleicht können wir dann ja noch das Fußballspiel in einer Bodega verfolgen und eine Kleinigkeit essen. Wir müssen ja früh ins Bett um morgen unsere 1. Etappe nach Pobena zu schaffen.       Day 9 Bilbao

      Short walk, couple of hours. Bilbao is lovely on approach from the hills, and lovely still on arrival! We found a mass in process in the vastly ornate church dedicated to 'Our Lady of Begoñia' (who?!) on the hill into the city, and I really really wanted to participate, so I just did. I was really moved being able to understand the 'happening', despite not understanding the language, due to the familiar form of Catholic liturgy. I experienced it as a belonging, and a being-at-home. Best of all was the end as I was leaving, when a little old lady whose face was full of light and joy reached out to me and said 'Santiago?', and just kissed my hand. I suppose I represent something to her about loving and following God, and it gave me happy-poignant inexplicable tears.

      There is something about a small city set about a wide river that just feels good, right, homely and professional at the same time. A bit like Basel (where I lived for 6 years in the 90s). A great atmosphere throughout the day, even before the buzzing night life erupts; many locals of all ages contributing to the energy, as well as enough British hen parties to fill a barn.
      The cathedral is very special architecturally, an unusual shape, and with attractive stonework, but the guided tour made my brain cloud over like the sky this morning, so I skipped most of it before (so to speak) the rain could spoil anything. The market hall is fabulous (oh dear, I'm recycling all the same words to describe my positive experiences) with meat and fish and fruit stalls. Oh, and the cafes with their pastry/cake/pintxos on offer. Sweet and savoury art on a plate! The offer is far beyond your typical British produce, in both range and quality. Really impressive.
      Thai massage ... oh my goodness what a treat after over 150km of walking.

      Joy ... "beside me, on my left and on my right" ... I look aslant every now and then, to see what I can see. And pause to listen to what's singing in the trees (Eurasian wrens! Eurasian blackcaps! (I have a birdsong app!)). And let the friendship of Heike and the kindness of strangers touch my heart. That's good. That's really very good.      Læs mere

      Day 6 Markina-Xemein

      The cold and rain invited us to take a different and less challenging route than the Camino classic stage, along the coast to Ondarroa and then by bus up to Markina. I didn't expect these temperatures and may need to find an extra top layer if the weather continues like this.

      A most unusual church building at the Ermita de San Miguel de Arretxinaga - why these rocks?

      Heike had booked an Airbnb apartment with a kitchen, so for supper we ate in, Karaoke fish from the fishmonger in Mutriku, and scallops in the shell: I now have my pilgrims' symbol to carry!
      Uninspired to paint. Squeezed out some 'thunks' I've been sort of thinking instead.      Læs mere

      Der Weg heute erst im Schlamm dann an der Straße entlang- beides nicht so mega- aber das Wetter war top! Vino und Verpflegung haben wir noch besorgt und unsere Unterkunft ist heute wieder komfortabel- muy bien😁 allen einen guten Start ins Wochenende

      Picasso's Guernica

      We just passed the town of Guernica.
      Picasso’s painting is based on the events that took place here on April 27, 1937, when Hitler’s German air force, acting in support of Franco, bombed this village of Guernica that had no strategic value. It was history’s first aerial saturation bombing of a civilian population. It was a cold-blooded training mission designed to test a new bombing tactic to intimidate and terrorize the resistance. For over three hours, twenty five bombers dropped 100,000 pounds of explosive and incendiary bombs on the village, reducing it to rubble. Twenty more fighter planes strafed and killed defenseless civilians trying to flee. The devastation was appalling: fires burned for three days, and seventy percent of the city was destroyed. A third of the population, 1600 civilians, were wounded or killed.
      With everything happening in Ukraine, Picasso's painting is more than ever relevant today. The original painting you can find in Madrid.      Læs mere

      Gernika-Lumo

      Day 7
      What a beautiful day! Perfect walking temperature, neither hot nor cold, and constantly changing but always always always pleasant, awe-inspiring, delightful, superb landscape, up and down hills, along the river, through villages, beside churches, through forests, and in and out of cafes!
      Nearly 30km/19miles, no great effort. My favourite day so far.

      I had thought to not post today, apart from the footprint, but somehow I'm feeling brighter and more at ease today and I'm inclined to make at least these few comments.

      Perhaps this has to do with the conversations and friendships of the day. With Heike, in any case, thanks Heike, just doing these days together. And with Adrian, from Ireland/ France, with whom the conversation went unexpectedly deep as we discovered a shared worldview and mutual openness to explore what this means to us.
      Kyesoo called me his angel, after I helped him book accommodation for tonight when he thought there was nothing available for miles.

      Museumswetter in Bilbao

      Wie gut, dass in Bilbao auf der absoluten To Do Liste das Guggenheim Museum steht. Denn heute ist absolutes Museumswetter, es regnet fast den ganzen Tag. Samu hält ganze 3 Stunden mit mir dort aus. Danach gibt's ne fette Portion Nudeln beim Italiener. Was für ein Glück, dass wir im Hotel eine Badewanne haben. Wir kommen nämlich recht durchnässt dorthin zurück und Samu taucht erstmal eine Stunde ab. Am Abend ist es wieder trocken und wir drehen noch eine Runde durch den Kiez und fahren mit der Schwebefähre auf die andere Seite der Stadt. Morgen geht's zurück nach Burgos. Ich bin schon ziemlich nervös und hoffe soooooo sehr, dass wir unseren Camper wieder repariert zurück bekommen und endlich die lange Heimreise antreten können. Schließlich sind wir gefühlt schon 40 Jahre unterwegs, wie Samu heute morgen nach dem Aufwachen meinte:-)Læs mere

      1. Etappe: Von Bilbao nach Pobena

      Motto des Tages: Wähle den Weg über die Bäche und stürze dich nicht gleich ins Meer ( Thomas von Aquin)

      Im Baskenland pünktlich um 07:00 Uhr von Karl geweckt, ging es dann frisch geduscht ohne Frühstück auf unsere erste Etappe nach Portugalete (die ersten 11 Kilometer) über den Fluss. Zwischendurch mussten wir erst einmal Mineralwasser auftanken. Heute ging es mit angenehmen 19 Grad am Morgen los, steigerte sich dann aber auf immer noch angenehme 24 Grad. Ideal zum Wandern! Je näher wir der Mündung des Flusses kamen, desto mehr kam uns der Meereswind entgegen, der es aber noch angenehmer machte. In Portugalete haben wir uns etwas verfranzt, haben uns aber durch einheimische Unterstützung einen geheimen steilen Weg hochgekämpft und sind dann wieder auf den rechten Weg gekommen. Karls Puls steigerte sich dann zwischenzeitlich auf über 150. Dann aber endlich der freie Blick auf die Biskaya in La Arena. Jetzt noch 1,1 Kilometer bis Pobena durchkämpfen zu unserer ersten Caminounterkunft (20 Betten in einem Schlafsaal mit einer Dusche). Strenge Bettruhe um 22:00 Uhr, aufstehen um 07:00 Uhr und Abmarsch um 08:00 Uhr. Vorher noch ein spanisches Menü für 12:00 Uhr mit Fisch-Bohnensuppe und Kotteletts mit Pommes. Der Wasserhaushalt wurde vorher wieder mit Bier aufgefüllt. Die Knochen wurden heute auf der ersten Etappe mit ca. 25 Kilometern sehr beansprucht. Jetzt müssen wir schlafen, denn morgen kommt die 2.
