Day 37 We have arrived in Santiago!

      12. kesäkuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

It started out to be just another 27k trek through the forest and 5 small towns. But it got more crowded as we got closer to Santiago, and Santiago is a big town so it seemed like it took forever to get to old town, where the cathedral would be located. Finally, we heard the bagpiper greeting those arriving at the square. Upon entering the square, we were overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for what we had accomplished, walking 480 miles in 37 days. Immediately, we saw others in our Camino Family - folks that we had walked with, shared meals and accommodation with. It was a giant, tear filled reunion! Here is a partial list of friends and their country that we met in the square: Marian Australia, Carla the Netherlands, Pete Australia. Kevin Whales, Jake and Troy Ireland, Liz Australia, Steven Hawaii, Steacy and Carolyn Canada, Paul Belgium.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to connect with such fabulous people.
      Off to Finnestar tomorrow

      Made it to Leon

      13. kesäkuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

I decided to walk today, although most people take the bus to avoid walking through the outskirts of Leon. It was only 18km, which is just as well as my latest ailment (pain in right foot) has got worse. The other ones have all gone away. I self diagnose tendon damage through overuse but will consult a chemist tomorrow. We followed Fiona's policy of always stopping in the second bar for breakfast. On the basis that being second, they try harder, and the coffee is better. This one in the third of several villages beginning with V had a coffee accompanied by 2 free cakes, which if you spoke Spanish you got to choose, for €1.50 . Free food with all drinks is a thing in the province of Leon so we haven't had to buy much. They don't cater for vegetarian s mind.
Leon city is lovely, and I have no idea why it has taken me 60 years to visit. We are staying in a very nice room in the historic city centre in a building that looks semi derelict from the outside. The cathedral is stunning, one of the few that will stand out in my memory. Gothic at its best with lovely stained glass windows., and possibly an influence on Gaudí s Sagrada Familia, as he was here. More about that tomorrow.
There is also an art materials shop next door to the hotel, so after looking for one for 10 days, I was finally able to replace the pen I need for drawing.
This evening we had a drink with David, who lives in Malaga, and who we have been bumping in to and having meals with for 2 weeks now, in one of the hundreds of bars, all heaving. Even the pigeons are enjoying tapas, which come free when you buy a drink. Apparently, today is university day, when the students finish, so having asked for a quiet room at the back of the hotel, there is still a buzz of noise in the background which will go on all night. It won't stop me sleeping though.

      Stimmung: sehr gut

      13. kesäkuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

      13.06.24
      8 Tag VdlP
      Wetter: 30°
Nach 20 Kilometer: Stimmung sehr gut

      Day 53 Bilbao to Sestau

      13. kesäkuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

The sun was shining as we got up and breakfasted at Andres’s flat. Then on the road once more.
We wandered through complete urban sprawl on the way out of Bilbao. The nicest sections were along the canal and at 1 point through a kind of country park whee the locals were sunbathing.
Apart from that we went through blocks of apartments, under and over motorways, big loud building projects and felt quite done in when we arrived in Sestao. It had been a long slog of roads and underpasses.
The approach into town was very daunting with rubble and broken concrete buildings with lots of graffiti.
We plodded up and down the Main Street of pinxtos bars, we found one that was serving chips and burgers and settled for lunch.
Still have big issues with finding food as no where here does a meal before 8.30pm.
We called into a local greengrocer and bought supplies to cook as we knew we had a kitchen to use.
We arrived at the apartment we had a room in and the owner was quite flustered as she had been in shower when we rang the bell!
We were shown our room, the bathroom and kitchen then left to our own devices.
After showering we slumped, then had to rally to get cooking - our first homemade meal in 2 months.
We were well underway with this when the phone went.
Suddenly 2 more guests arrived- so now we are 5 adults in a tiny apartment with one toilet 😫
      Not great!!
We will avoid this situation in future
We settled ourselves to eat whilst the other adults wandered about us working out how to use the washing machine- not very relaxing!!
Anyway onwards and forwards let’s hope we get some sleep and are in a more peaceful setting tomorrow 🤞

      Dust in the wind/holy mother

40 km desolaat gebied. Ok, doen dan heb ik dat gehad. In dit gebied heeft geen mens iets te zoeken. Kale vlaktes:
geen gebouwen, geen landbouw, veeteelt o.i.d. nada! Hoe de wande- laars dit doen? No idea!

      Day 42 Santiago de Compostela
Distance from Amenal to Santiago 17kms

The final day of our Camino.
The sun was shining as we set out the temperature a cool 9c we walked with a spring in our step. Surprisingly the way was quiet and at times we had it to ourselves a good time to be in the moment and concentrate on our last steps towards the city.
Santiago came into view some 6kms out the excitement rose a level.
Walking into the square at 11.20am 6 weeks after we left St Jean Pied de Port (to the day and time) full of joy and a sense of achievement.
An Adventure it has been without injury or blisters embracing the challenges and putting one foot in front of the other for over 800kms.
Filled with pride and wonderful memories this adventure has now come to an end.
I hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have.

      Sahagun - Meseta

      2. kesäkuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

I was excited to walk away from Ledigos toward Sahagún.

I knew Leon a bigger city was getting closer! Possibly more food options.

As I started my walk. It was hot. I could tell my body was toast.
I was mentally pumped up to rock it and the old body wasn’t having it. Oh well 🤷‍♀️

The Pharmacy here has great ointment to put on the joints to get the body moving. The Incrediwear knee sleeve is great also.

Ultimately, I knew I needed some rest days.

My shin splints weren’t going away and I could feel the tendons in my ankle swelling which made it more difficult to walk with a steady flow.

On the way to Sahagun. We reached the half way point marker. The statues look like they belong in an Indian Jones movie.

The day was hot which made me sweat which had me purging salt and chapping my lips. I take hydration/salt tablets to get my body back feeling good.

I also found what looks kinda like bunkers. They call them Bodegas. They are over 500 years old. It’s Where the families that owned the wine vineyards would keep their wine, meat, supplies and sometime sleep their kids safe from the winter cold. Short video attached.

While walking I met up with a Camino friend Cheryl from San Francisco - Philippine born. She told me how she remembers being a baby in the jungle. Imagine being raised in a Jungle and then working in San Francisco with a big corporation.

I find myself thinking about what it took her family to get from there to here.

Welp, my ass was tired, like you haven’t heard that before!

I knew I needed three rest days.

I ate a massive cheeseburger in Sahagun.

The next morning, we took the train to Leon for some rest days.💜😇 yasssss! 🙌

      Deba

      13. kesäkuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Really lovely, sunny day - at last! Round here you are always climbing over a rocky promontory and then down to the next village, repeat, and that is how today's 28km became 800m of climbing.
I was lucky to meet Daniela, the physio and Nora, the psychiatrist from yesterday as they had walked further than me, and we walked most of the day together, including through the Flysch geo park where the rock strata are tipped up.
Tonight's albergue is over the railway station. It's small and basic, with no cooking facilities, but will be fine. There is an English pilgrim who has already enjoyed quite a lot of the cheap Spanish beer. A few of us are going to a restaurant.

      Day 36 27.5k to Brea

      12. kesäkuuta, Espanja ⋅ 🌙 46 °F

It's been so cool in the Galacia region of Spain lately. It was 44 degrees when we left Melide this morning. Today involved a lot of forrest hiking, which is so beautiful. We hiked through many tunnels of trees and went through several groves of eucalyptus trees, which smelled heavenly. We usually eat something light before we head out and get caffe au lait and a real breakfast an hour or two later, but today we went through several towns before finding food at a tiny store set up in the forrest. The Civil Guard consists of officers from both Spain and France that patrol the Camino. Our cute hotel that has room for 18 people has a tiny pool. Getting up extra early tomorrow to hike into Santiago and arrive at the Cathedral de Santiago which has been our destination for a long time! So excited!Lue lisää
