    All roads lead to ….
Arrived safely with luggage thanks Qatar. A glitch with FB meant I could post photos but no text! All fixed. Our first Silversea adventure starting beautifully with a 2 night stay at the Bernini Bristol Hotel. Centrally located, walking distance to many attractions. Thanks for joining us on our big Italy, Greece and Turkey - I will keep you posted!
Slept well ready for a day of roaming Roma. Beautiful brekky with a view of the city. Arrived mid afternoon yesterday and managed to see the Trevi fountain, pantheon, beautiful churches, eat truffle pasta, drink wine, limoncello, aperol spritz by the piazza and stroll through some amazing shops.
The trip with Qatar while long was comfy with exit row seats and surprisingly nice food! Stopover in Doha at the lounge enabled us to freshen up and hydrate and fuel. Change of planes and we are in an empty section with plenty of room to stretch out.
Silversea have kept up informed all the way with constant updates. Very impressed with level of service!

    Exploring Roma

    April 16, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Sunday stroll through the gardens borghese. Sun is out and we visit the villa and then the zoo gardens where we meet Skippy! Lunch at Harry’s bar for more pasta - sea bass and squid and some vino. Such a beautiful restaurant right by the walls of the gardens. To the Spanish steps and the church at the top. Cocktails and gelato at Babbington tea rooms watching the crowds. It’s not even high season yet! Imagine the people!! Over 20000 steps and back to the hotel via a few churches. Tonight we are booked into the rooftop restaurant at the hotel. Resting with a Rose in the hotel bar. A beautiful Roma day.Read more

    Boarding day

    April 17, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Wandered out for Pizza close by hotel, delicious and the obligatory limoncello!
Early to bed as bags out and ready at 7am. Another delicious breakfast and wander to the pantheon via the Trevi fountain. One coin toss - great shot!
More walking and viewing amazing Roma sights including Michelangelo’ designed hill by the huge piazza. We find a cute restaurant for early lunch in a narrow street great for people watching and eat risotto bruschetta and insalata with chardy and we agree we love Rome! To the hotel and board the bus for the trip to the port. Silversea have arranged everything. It’s a door to door service - seamless. The few people we have met think I am from the UK apart from Kathy from Adelaide. Most people on the bus have American accents. The skies are blue the weather is warm ( especially on the bus as the air con is not working) and we can see the sea. We must be close. I will probably cry when I see the ship - I always do!
So close and yet so far. We are stopped at the security gate as the driver does not have the right pass. It’s quite hot and we will be glad to get off!
So despite 3 strikes against Silversea - the hot bus transfer , the long check in lines and the in person very detailed muster drill ( which every other cruise line has done away with) we are in LOVE with SS already. Neil our butler bought us a very nice bottle of gin , Eduardo at the pool bar is sourcing Clamato juice for me, the room is seriously beautiful and we got an upgrade. We are watching the sun set from our balcony after an amazing hot tub and swim with no one around! It’s like having your own yacht! The weather is balmy, the pizza by the pool is definitely the best at sea, and we are pinching ourselves. I’ve cried a couple of times already.

    Naples!

    April 18, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We relaxed in hot tub swam in the pool, had an amazing dinner at Silver note a small beautiful venue with guitarist. Lobster and the beehive - bits of seafood and caviar, dessert and Vouvray wine from Loire Valley and we are full of food and fun. We continue to the panorama lounge to dance the night away and we are a bit concerned we have gone too hard on day 1. However a great nights sleep and a beautiful in suite brekky and we are refreshed and ready for Pompeii. Hours of walking over uneven cobblestones and we are again exhausted but what an experience! This was on my bucket list and it did not disappoint.Read more

    Amalfi Coast

    April 19, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Dinner in La Dame the French restaurant onboard is delicious and amazing. A great nights sleep and we wake in Sorrento for a day exploring the Amalfi Coast and lunch by the beach in Positano. A scenic drive to Ravello and we stop for Gelato and an amazing view of the coast. We have not been here before and it is breathtaking. The winding roads and sheer drops make for a hair raising drive but we settle into the experience and are awestruck. Enjoying our SS adventure meeting interesting people in beautiful places.Read more

  • Day 6

    Sicily

    April 20, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Another dancing frenzy in the panorama lounge after a seafood feast at the grill restaurant on the open deck. Great wine ( thanks max for the recommendation) and they are scouring the boat for Clamato juice for me.
A great sleep and breakfast in La Terrazza overlooking Sicily.
A crazy excursion with traffic jams and markets crammed with people. We find a quiet cafe and sample Canoli and Cassata and espresso. The markets are full of seafood and fresh produce and lots of fish that I have never seen before. And then we are missing 4 people!!
Sicily is busy and noisy and amazing buildings.
We sample cannoli and espresso and cassata and some other Sicilian sweets, visit a monastery and hear sad tales of young girls taken from families to live in seclusion. We walk up to the roof for a great view of the surrounding square gardens and get a Birds Eye view of Palermo. To the ship and our favorite hot tub at the back of the ship, then pool side to soak up Mediterranean rays and read our books. Waiters kindly bring us aperol spritz for the spa , puttanesca pizza by the pool after a refreshing swim. What a lovely relax after a busy morning. Our ship has the Salt Lab - a cooking school and we enjoy an hour of making 2 delicious dishes a pasta and an eggplant meatball which were seriously delicious.
We are full of food and dinner is in 2 hours so we retreat to our balcony for G&T and Caesar - courtesy of the crew searching the ship for the only bottle of Clamato juice! We watch the Costa Smeralda sail away - a huge ship which made the port day a bit hectic. We have 600 passengers - it has thousands!
La Terrazza Italian dinner tonight and no dancing ( according to Royce) .

    Best excursion ever

    April 21, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

As we wind our way down Mount Etna with fingers crossed that it doesn’t erupt we sing 🎤’that’s amore ‘ with our fellow passengers who are filled with beautiful wine Sicilian delicacies and the good humor that comes with Mediterranean sunshine mixed with the bestest day ever. This was an included excursion and boy was it great fun. We have had some memorable moments and touring the beautiful villages of Sicily is a highlight.
The Sicilian wine has taken the edge of the hair raising bends on a one lane road in a huge bus with traffic coming the other way. Again we meet interesting people from far flung places who add another dimension to our wonderful experiences. Did I mention the rose wine was fabulous?
A relaxed breakfast this morning and a read by the pool followed by a trip to the spa was a great start to the day.
We will dine at Salt tonight as it highlights food and wine from the local areas. So more Sicilian delicacies on the way. I’ll keep you posted!

    Malta

    April 22, 2023 in Malta ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Sailing into Malta is quite a treat so we are awake early with room service brekky and cappuccinos watching the sun rise on the fortress port.
Our game of thrones tour allows us to see 3 different parts of Malta including the Mdina and the gardens of the President ( red keep) on a beautiful sunny Mediterranean day. Our tour guide is entertaining and Malta is seriously fascinating. Back to driving on our side of the road !
We board the ship for lunch and devour the best pizza at sea with an Italian beer. Poolside hot tub swim and read in the sun with a couple of bevies and life seems pretty good. From our poolside possie we can see the spires of the cathedral and the amazing buildings surrounding the harbour. Apparently they are preparing for the filming of gladiator 2 and building a new arena by the port. The average age of cruisers on board must be in the high 70’s with a few younger people thrown in and by younger I mean 40. The staff are endlessly patient and polite and extremely helpful. There is space everywhere- no queues no battling for deck chairs lots of choices for where and what to eat and anything you would like to drink is at hand.
The butler bought us afternoon caviar to have with our champagne. It is definitely our most luxurious travel experience. Well I think so Royce is still on the fence as to whether it’s better than our other cruise experiences. I think he’s nuts.

    Sea day

    April 23, 2023, Eastern Mediterranean ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

First and only sea day today.
The sun is shining not a cloud in the sky but a bit cool on the deck.
Last night we dined in Silver Note again and had another amazing meal - mushroom mouse followed by buttered lobster tail and a berry surprise. The wine moved from an oaky chardy to a delicate sav blanc and then an Italian moscato. The sommelier is knowledgeable and I need to trust his advice. I turned my nose up at the sav balance from Australia but it was fabulous.
There is a singer and pianist entertaining us and the atmosphere is very New York jazz club. We pop into the salt bar to see our favorite bar tender Carlos who is a little bit grumpy but entertaining.
We stay up for the show which encourages audience participation and it’s a dance night again. We meet Derek and Kathy who are originally from Australia but are now living in the Middle East. They are lively company and we chat drink and dance the night away. Holiday Royce in full swing and he is channeling Kell on the dance floor.
We wind our clocks forward and lose an hours sleep so we wake late and head to La Terrazza for breakfast. It is the first time I have seen a crowded venue on board. Still room but it is as full as I have seen any venue.
We pass the onboard shops and I find a very cute dress with a very good special and I make my first onboard purchase.
To the Dolce Vita lounge and there is a martini making demonstration complete with tasting so why not! 3 mini martinis and it’s not lunch time yet. To the pool and it’s a bit chilly but they provide everything you need - blankets, set up the sun bed for you, cool towels, fruit skewers, anything you would like to drink. We break from this strenuous activity to get some lunch at the pool grill. They have a great light lunch snack type menu as well as a poolside buffet plus you can order pizza if you wish. Lunch is accompanied by an Australian chardy and a French rose. Back to the half sun half shade of our poolside possie. We have both finished our books. We may have to check out the library.
We listen to the destination talk about our upcoming Greece and Turkey ports ( new to both of us) and then Bingo and Trivia. Back to our stateroom for caviar and champagne. It’s been a glorious sea day marred only by our dismal result in trivia and the fact we missed the seafood lunch in La Terrazza.

  • Day 10

    Crete

    April 24, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Kaiseki restaurant for dinner and more lobster than you can poke a stick at. Delicious meal and chardy from Argentina and we agree that the food and drink is pretty amazing! We wander home via the pool deck and run into Heather and Allan from Scotland who are finishing up a very nice red and they invite us to join them. We have a lovely post dinner chat and discuss different viewpoints of the ship and it’s merits and head off for a good night sleep.
We wake to Crete. Breakfast in the Arts cafe which is indeed one of our favorite quiet places onboard and then to our excursion which takes us through the beautiful countryside minus hairaising traffic. Our olive oil and winery tour is delightful with great company local food and interesting wine.
The excursion is spoilt a little by a 1 hour stop at a soap factory - it is too long and not of interest to all. It was my kind of place with essential oils and potions and homemade soaps.
Back to the ship and we lunch in Atlantide.
With only 3 other guests in sight we have another delicious meal - vegetable soup and pasta with chilli and great wines.
We stop by the library and go to reception to talk about disembarking ( SOB) and then to the pool deck for relaxing and hot tubbing and swimming. It’s warm and beautiful and we are very happy. Will keep you posted.
Trivia soon and then dinner in Salt kitchen for local cuisine and wine.
