Rhodes any place that loves cats is my k

    April 25, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We come third in Trivia and are very excited! We have a multinational team and more heads are definitely better than one.
A limoncello spritz and Champers in the panorama lounge predinner in Atlantide which is like the main dining room - very fancy and a great selection. We have lobster bisque and prawns and other yummy things with a very nice Californian Chardonnay . We watch the show which is one of the singers choosing favorite songs through the decades. She’s got a great voice and it’s a lovely venue. The entertainment is very low key and not a strong point for this cruise line however there are many other great things about the ship that add up to a great experience all round.
A good nights sleep - no dancing ( I think I have worn Royce out).
Breakfast in our suite, laundry ( self service on each floor) and coffee in the arts cafe snd it’s time for our excursion - walking tour of old town Rhodes and brunch!
Everyone said Rhodes was beautiful and they were right of course! It is an amazing old town and we walk for hours and eat and shop.
We stop for ouzo and dips mid afternoon and walk to the windmills. Such a lovely day! Trivia again and we start strong but fail dismally however the company is superb as are the limoncello spritz!
Dinner tonight at Salt Kitchen - will keep you posted!

    Ephesus and Mary’s house

    April 26, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Another wonderful meal in Salt restaurant with local delicacies and local wines. An early night as a big day in Kusadasi Turkey awaits.
The weather is cloudy and we get quite wet walking through Ephesus however our enthusiasm for the site is not dampened!
Amazing tour of the site and the museum and the basilica of St John before the trip up the mountain to the house of the Virgin Mary and more rosary beads than you can poke a stick at!
It is an amazing experience and light a candle and say a prayer.
Off to lunch and it’s pouring now so our evening outdoor concert looks like it will be canceled. Ces’t La vie.
We have had so much Mediterranean sunshine - so we can’t complain.
There is a huge princess ship in but we manage to skirt most of the crowded areas.
So many cats here as well. So beautiful!

    Santorini

    April 27, 2023, Aegean Sea ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

It’s a beautiful sunrise over the Greek islands this morning as we sail past Naxos on our way to Santorini. It’s a bit windy and rocky so not sure whether we will be able to tender.
Early coffee at the arts cafe to catch the sun peeking over the Aegean sea. Magic!
We decided to do room service last night - we have experienced all the dining options onboard due to careful preplanning and booking. Lots of people have missed out so we are very grateful for our excellent travel agent(moi).
Room service on Silversea is very nice with the butler setting up the table with tablecloth and beautiful setting and bringing wine - opening the bottle for you - that sort of thing. It is a special experience.
We watch the latest Jurassic Park movie which is as corny as anything but good fun.
This is our first trip to Greece and Turkey and we are very excited seeing all the places we have heard about from our friends travels.
Our first glimpse of Santorini over breakfast gives us a birdseye view and I cry a little. With happiness. We have a beautiful day tendering over to the hrllish bus ride up the mountain to pyros village then in to Santo winery to taste 3 local wines with cheese and olives and a magnificent view. To Oia and we find a lovely restaurant to sit with a wine and a light pre lunch and admire the sparkling Caldera. We then drive to Fira and stop for real lunch with Heather and Allan from Scotland. It’s has fabulous Greek food and the stuffed calamari and prawn saganaki is delicious!
We wander around the town and catch the cable car down to return to the ship for our last trivia session - no points but lots of fun with Helen and Derek from Shell Cove who are staying onboard for back to back cruises. We will have to return and stay for a few days in 2024 when we come back to Athens.
We are getting another cruise after this one and we spy our ship in port this afternoon! How funny!
Sail away sunset in La Terrazza restaurant tonight - I’ll keep you posted!

    Our new ship awaits!

    April 28, 2023 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Our driver Marios is waiting after a seamless disembarkation from the Silver Moon. While we are sad to be saying farewell we are excited for the next adventure. We are a worried that our next adventure will not be as fabulous as this as it’s been amazing. Mario’s is informative ad friendly and takes us on a scenic tour of the coastal resorts enroute to Lavrion Port. The ship is there - always a good sign and again our travel agent has done a remarkable job of coordinating this trip ( go me!). We board without any hassles and step into the 80’s. The ship is in excellent condition although definitely dated bars and lounges but very comfy and I love it! Our room is huge with a lounge area and a separate bedroom area walk in closet and large bathroom including a tub. The finishes are not as swish however it is an amazing room and we are very happy. We go straight to the pool area for a drink and then to the spa for reflexology and Indian head massage and to lunch. On the way we meet Habib who signs us up for a special dining experience takes us past the long buffet lines to the a la cart lunch area and settles us in for a 3 course delicious lunch with wines and Kalua coffee. To the talk for excursions and port information as this has 2 stops per day.
We are heading to Mykonos arriving at 6 pm and have our tender number 1! Our excursion was cancelled so we will just go ashore and wander.
Tomorrow is Kusadasi and Santorini with Patmos and somewhere else the next day.
Our muster drill is in Person and is very reminiscent of cruises past so is in keeping with the 80’s vibe.
Tender to Mykonos and we are boat 1.
We find a very nice restaurant by the water before the hoards arrive and we snag a table by the view and with a heater - it’s a little cold.
    A princess ship in!

    And back to Kusadasi!

    April 29, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

    Ahhhh Mykonos.
After all the beautiful photos and posts from friends that have traveled to the Greek islands we are finally here. And it is just perfect. One of those places that needs seeing to be believed. The restaurant we choose is playing Love is the air. Those of you who know that “what a wonderful world “ ( a song I associate with my dad) has followed me everywhere and in very obscure places… in a restaurant in Turkey as soon as we walk in there is a musician playing - you guessed it. It feels like a blessing from dad. And when we board our new ship we hear our wedding song - Richard Marks - Oceans Apart. Very special!
Anyhow sunset in Mykonos from a little bar window in little Venus looking at the windmills and a wander through the streets and we have had a very magical Mykonos moment.
Early night even though there is finally entertainment on board - cirque du soleil style.
Breakfast and a wander through Kusadasi - we were here on the last cruise and know the city so we visit a cute cafe for Turkish tea and baclava and we see our waiter Habib who helped us yesterday sitting nearby. We wave hello and when we go to pay he has paid our bill - way too kind! What a lovely man.
I buy some things from the market and back to the ship for lunch with our already favorite waiters. The food is really delicious and they have great vegan options.
This afternoon we sail for Patmos where we will tender to Scala take a look around and head back for our special Greek dinner.
Royce is realizing the special touches from Silversea but is enjoying this cruise very much.

    Double excursion day

    April 30, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Our stay in Patmos while brief was very enjoyable and picturesque! Such a stunning place and much quieter than our last ports. We wandered, ate spanakopita, said hello to many cats, looked through the port town of Scala and then tendered back to the ship for our special Greek dinner which was seriously amazing. Habib was so proud of the special menu and we ate way too much beautiful food.
This is definitely a 90’s cruise. We enjoyed old style bingo, napkin and towel folding class and an after dinner Greek god spectacular show.
Breakfast in our suite and off to one of the 25 buses for our tour of Heraklion and the Temple of Knossos!
Very busy morning sightseeing in Heraklion town then the temple of Knossos and stories of bulls and falling in love with them and Minotaurs! We explore the site which is amazing in terms of its history. We stand in a 4,000 year old theatre.
Back to the ship for lunch and massages before Santorini mark 2.

  • Day 17

    Athens

    May 1, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Well Santorini was a dream. Sunset dining at Mama Thira , recommended by Karen and visited last week by Ian and Max. It was a warm balmy night with a magical view. Photo with the owner after we had shown him a photo of Michael and him in 2011. Very crowded cable car lines but worth the wait. We had swordfish and spaghetti with seafood - so flavorful. To the boat for dessert and Greek sweet wine. We see our favorite waiter Habib who looks after us with a window table and excellent service.
Disembarkation is straightforward and after a quick breakfast we are met by our driver at the port. We used Welcome pickups - really recommend- reliable and good communication.
Again a seamless transfer. I asked Royce would he do the cruise again - he said no - too hectic - 2 ports a day.
I had visions of an MSJ reunion tour/ pilgrimage with me leading with a flag. There were lots of tour groups onboard.
    Lots of church groups.
We have 3 nights in Athens. Royce has tickets for the hop on hop off bus and we have tickets for some major attractions. So lots more walking ahead! Lucky I’ve hit the day spa a couple of times for reflexology and massage!
    So many steps!

    Athens adventure

    May 1, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Enjoying lunch in a taverna near our hotel and I look over my darling husbands shoulder and I see the acrockolipse (as he calls it). It adds to the many sights I have seen over his shoulder including the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Great Wall of China. A big walking morning to Parliament House, the Plaka and the botanic gardens is rewarded with a half liter of Greek white wine, fava beans, toasted bread with olive oil and halloumi salad. Thousands of steps!
Lunch includes fava beans and and Greek white (not Chianti!) followed by halloumi salad and walnut cake washed down with ouzo. Our new hotel is available after lunch and the room is very comfortable and the reception friendly and helpful. It was a luxury escape so we have breakfast included and a bottle of wine to enjoy looking at the acrockolypse. Great value at $210 a night we think! Great location! Afternoon sightseeing walking Roman Agora, flea market more dining and shopping areas. Everywhere is interesting and something to see. We watch the sunset with a bottle of wine looking at the acropolis- not hungry after our lukamedes stop - donut balls with pistachio snd white chocolate stuffing with pistachio gelato - amazing!
The end of a perfect first day in Athens.

    Day 3 Athens

    May 2, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

More Lukumades and then Gyros last night and to the rooftop to watch the Acropolis light up. Rose and aperol spritz followed by a free shot of something clear for our digestion and to bed. It’s raining and we feel warm and comfy first in the roof top bar and then in our comfy bed. A great nights sleep no outside noise and up for breakfast with our view again. To the archeological museum and more pots and statues than you can poke a stick at. It’s very amazing and informative. Back to the hop on bus and we hop off at the Acropolis to catch the bus to the beach. A bit of a wait so of course it’s a stop at a very lovey spot for beer and fetta rolls! We find a taverna by the sea and indulge in a bottle of rose assorted seafood including white bait, mussels and cod and greek salad. We meet a beach cat amongst the pigeons and make our way back to the hotel.Read more

    Acrockolypse day!

    May 2, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

After an interesting nights sleep - it doesn’t pay to go to bed early in our hotel with church bells chiming and marble floors and people returning from the rooftop-bar into the tiny lift near our door and saying good night in Spanish, Greek, French, broken English and American! However I manage to fall asleep at some stage. The bed is comfortable, the pillows are great and I am not whinging.
Breakfast at our acropolis view restaurant and the Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts is superb! So much for dairy free!
To a cab and we meet George the taxi driver who used to be a chief engineer on an American cruise line who regaled us with stories of meeting Fidel Castro on board with the captain - he has a photo. It was worth the 10 Euro with tip to meet him. We reach the gate for the acropolis and it is truly awe inspiring and again with the tears. It’s a warm sunny blue sky sparkly day and we are not too crowded - lots of people yes but we get to enjoy the experience- we have come early and I think it’s paid off. So fabulous!
We walk to the museum and their are lots of school groups but again no lines and we are able to see all the antiquities! We relax at the museum cafe with spinach pie and coffee ready for the bus to Temple of Zeus.
A big touring day follows with a visit to Panathenaic Stadium then lunch at Monastiraki Square which again is seriously delicious feta in phyllo pastry with honey and nuts followed by gyros ( no meat) and octopus and of course Greek wine. The Roman Agora beckons and we have used all our site visits on our ticket and the blue bus has been great for getting around.
We stroll back to the hotel dodging the bracelet sellers near the metro ready for quiet time and recovery from a big day out!
