      Broome

      2. september 2023, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

      Broome, WA

      6. januar, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

      New-to-us Port #3.

Having completed the immigration formalities yesterday as we were sailing from Bali to Australia, we were ready to disembark Regatta as soon as it was cleared. The complimentary shuttle took us from the port to Napier Terrace in Broome.

Even as we got off the bus, we noted how quiet everything seemed to be. We had a few ideas about what we wanted to do, including going heli-sightseeing. But were hoping for a bit more information before making a decision. So, we asked the two people greeting the bus for directions to the Visitor Center and headed off to ask some questions.

We found the VC alright … locked up tight and closed until 8 January! That pretty much proved to be the case almost everywhere in Broome … except for the supermarkets, a few cafés, and some shops. The landmarks, including the museum, were closed. Why so with a ship-full of people in town? For one thing, this is off-season hereabouts. For another, the week following the ringing in of the new year seems to be a popular time for extended holidays and closures.

So, we hopped on the Broome Explorer, a city bus that not only provides regular transportation, but also serves as a Ho-Ho if you buy the day pass. We didn’t. We just paid the fare for a trip out to Cable Beach, said to be one of the top-five beaches in the world … Mui could swim and we could later get a bite to eat at Zanders.

The plan didn’t work out as expected, but it did give us something fun to do and rescued the day from being a total failure. For one thing, there was a strong, refreshing breeze that helped mitigate the hot temperature. For another thing, the scenery was beautiful … a long stretch of white sand under brilliant blue skies … rimmed with turquoise water on one side and a band of green consisting of palm trees, dune vegetation, and lush grass on the other side.

The surprising thing was that the long expanse of beach was all but deserted. I saw two people sunning themselves, and as the day progressed, some people came out for a stroll. That was it. Off-season? Yes. Stinger season? Yes. Rough surf? Yes. Then, there is that estuarine crocodile 🐊 sighted in the water yesterday … a definite deterrent to swimming no matter how inviting the water looked.

So, Mui headed over to Zanders to get us a table. I went for a stroll to take photos before joining him. Good food. Ordered the Trawler’s Catch to share … Exmouth prawns, calamari, Thai fish cakes, spring rolls, and baked scallops. We supplemented it with an order of pumpkin & feta arancini. We washed it all down with beverages from Matzo’s, a local brewery … ginger beer for me and mango beer for Mui. I’d rate mine OK … Mui’s drink didn’t have much flavor.

Returning to the ship early, we relaxed until dinner time … just as Regatta pulled away from its berth to continue south along the Western Australia coast.

      Day 1 in Broome

      23. juli 2023, Australia ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

We had our first full day in Broome. Arrived in the city we saw a Sunday market so stopped there immediately where I bought my new cap 😎 very proud of this one. After the market we drove to a jetty to have a first sneak peak for the ocean. It’s quite windy the days we are here so is the ocean a bit rough on the video. Never mind, we enjoyed the day and I’m happy to see what Broome will bring the next days.
We topped up the car, what was very expensive and got some snacks in woolis.

      Broome, Australia.

      12. februar, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 88 °F

Some ports are less interesting than others. I think cruise ships stop in these ports to save money. Parking is less expensive.
The ship arrived at 5:00AM, but the shuttles from so called port started at 8:00AM. Walking is not allowed.
We took first shuttle to the town. It was already very hot. Everything was closed, except supermarket. We walked around for a while and then took city sightseeing bus which started running at 9:00 AM to Cable Beach. The bus runs loops, stopping at shopping centre, resorts and beach.
Swimming is not advised due to big waves and jellyfish in the summer.

Cable Beach is a 22 km stretch of white sand beach on the eastern Indian Ocean and the name of the surrounding suburb in Broome, Western Australia. Cable Beach was named after the telegraph cable laid between Broome and Java in 1889.

Very popular is camel 🐪 rides on Cable Beach. We were told that Australia had the biggest wild camels population in the world. We have not seen any. Probably too hot for camels.😅😅

The heat was unbearable and after 30 min, we took another bus back to the shuttle and shuttle back to the ship.

      Anniversary Day

      6. april, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

50 years ago my brother Charlie married Sue in Farnham, Surrey. Our whole trip has been celebrating their Golden anniversary and this was their special day. We drove into Broome and had an excellent breakfast at the Dragonfly cafe.
Next stop the Saturday market in the grounds of the old Courthouse where some excellent purchases were made. Having dropped off the car we took the bus past Cable Beach as far as the Spinifex brewery where we had a sharing platter for lunch.
After lunch we had time to visit Willy Creek pearl showroom where they had some amazing carp and barramundi in their pool.
We felt the need to use our pool then! We did though visit the Black Stump gallery across the road which had some impressive works of art including a couple of mixed media that included diamond dust which appealed to Janet in particular.
Before going out C&S opened the bottle of Moët champagne 2015 which we got in duty free and was a delicious toast to the occasion.
We got the bus to Wharf where we had the most excellent fish and chips. A great way to end the anniversary day.

      Homeward bound

      8. april, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Flying to Perth at 14.00 we decided a brunch at the Dragonfly Cafe would be the best way to spend our final morning in Broome. The 24hr bus ticket proved invaluable. We are all on the same flight with us turning right and Charlie and Sue left towards Adelaide.
Qantas provided a Fokker 100 for the flight which left a little early and was 75% full. A veggie snack and glass of Shiraz kept us going through the show.
Watched as C&S took off as the sunset. Full though calm flight to Dubai where the sun rose for us. Final leg coming up and rain warning for Rugby 😎😎

      Hello again,

      CU in the NT !

      Morgenwanderung in Broome 😀

      22. mars, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C
