On way to the Great Wall

    April 5 in China ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

Beautiful day out. Air quality 67 vs 176 yesterday - actual blue skies!! Note of interest - the bricks in the Great Wall would circle the world twice. Also the one thing visible from space or so the astronauts claim

Today is a Memorial Day in China where people pay respect to the lives of loved ones who have passed away

Kids are off school today. No tolls charged on the roads

    Pearl Shop

    April 6 in China ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Not much going on here. Just a place to buy pearls, which a few of the ladies did. Some serious haggling going on, which is pretty amusing. Once these ladies think you might be 1% interested in something, you’re doomed. They’ll even follow you into the parking lot!

    Novotel Hotel

    April 4 in China ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Arrived here at 5:30 pm. Going for a city walk with Tom in 30 minutes long day. Beautiful hotel - central location. After a 1 hr rest, we went out to explore the main shopping area. Lot of high find stuff here - Prada, Cartier, etc. also a lot of food vendors on side streets. Check out my wiggling scorpions video that are then fried and eaten on a stick! I couldn’t get enough of them!! Other shots from our city walks (Hutong area, drum tower)Read more

    Dinner near the hotel

    April 5 in China ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

I’m amazed at all we accomplished in one day. Traveling on your own, there is no way. Gate1 makes it simple. Bang for the buck? No question. Great hotels in great locations, great food, great guides, and a great group of people (28 of them - a very nice size). We will continue to travel with them.

    Forbidden city

    April 6 in China ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

80000 visitors today. No more tickets left. Everyone buys them online this place is amazing. I had no idea how large it was. you go through multiple courtyards and it seems to go on forever. Lot of folks toiled long and hard to give the fat cats a pleasant life.

    Summer Palace

    April 6 in China ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

50,000 here today. We have to wait till some people leave before we can get in. Total madhouse here today. Was not a good idea to visit on a national holiday. Made for great people watching, however. I love studying them as much as they love studying us! The little kids are adorable

    Beijing

    April 10 in China ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

After getting a wake up call at 7 am (and willing myself not to go back to sleep) our first stop of the day was the Summer Palace. Here we saw where the emperor would go to stay during the summer and it featured the longest painted corridor in the world. Next we to Tiananmen Square on our way to the Forbidden City, where our tour guide told us many facts about Chinese culture and history. Then we went to a tea ceremony and tried a selection of teas (fruit tea was my favourite). After the tea ceremony we went to a Kung Fu performance in a theatre down the road which was very impressive. Now for a well deserved rest.Read more

Day trip to the Great Wall

    April 8 in China ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Today we tackled the Great Wall heading North from Beijing about 75 km thru a stop and go maze of 8 lane grid lock ring roads and small two lane roads through peach and apple orchards. There are 6 sections of the Wall open to the public and our driver and tour guide Yao navigated it all with ease to get us there in a couple hours after pickup from our hotel. The Mutianyu section we visited is 5 km long and we took a cable car up to one of the towers and walked from there. What's really amazing about this whole thing is it stretches from the desert to the sea some 8000+ km right along the top ridges of the highest mountains. I guess for best sight lines for good defense. We walked around up and down stairs from tower to tower for a few hours. Aurora had the most fun kicking the soccer ball around on the top of tower 17. She liked the stone slab work too trying to follow the mortar lines and peak through the drain holesRead more

Bei hai park and jingshan park

    April 8 in China ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

After the Great Wall we visited 2 parks north of the Forbidden City
Bei hai park has a large lake in the center and Jingshan has a hill in the center and flower gardens all around the base.
Aurora needed a nap badly but was refusing to sleep. We then figured out a diaper change was needed and found the perfect oasis for parents in need.Read more

    Arrival in Beijing

    April 9 in China ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

After a 10 hour flight the first thing we all needed was a good meal. We had a selection of different Chinese dishes to try from and all were delicious, but some found them too spicy. Afterwards a first look at the hotel and trying on our face masks.
