      Most southern point of Germany

      August 8, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Starting later without pressure because I would get wet anyway I walked alongside the mountain as before. This time instead of going down into Austria I followed the border until I reached the most southern point of Germany, the Haldenwanger Eck or Grenzstein 147. There I had a break for breakfast at 10 am and continued into the Rappenalp valley following the NST again. After a while the clouds started to fill the valley and it started to rain. I had a short stop under a roof while the heaviest rain came down and then continued walking out of the valley.

Once I got to Oberstdorf I tried to meet my parents and cousins, who wanted to pick me up, but the one road where I waited had signs to not enter from one side even though cars were coming from both sides. A bus that had the permission for this road and another car driving sneaky behind entered the road so my father decided to follow them and a minute later the bus passed me. We went back to the apartment and my parents cooked dinner while I tried to clean myself as exhausted as I was. After dinner my cousins and I played some card games, where I luckily drew the fitting cards most of the time.

      Von Oberstdorf zum Haldenwanger Eck

      June 26, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Das war ein schöner Tag. Das war ein guter Tag. Ein sehr guter Tag. Vielleicht der beste Tag auf meinem Weg.

Das Wetter hervorragend. Richtige Berge rechts und links und vorn. Satte grüne Wiesen. Unendlich viele schöne und duftende Blumen. Enzian. Trollblumen. Alpenrosen. Nelkenwurz.

Schmeckt trotzdem.

So.

Back to Germany back to the NST

      August 6, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

I left early at 6.15 am to get down to Landeck, where I got my breakfast and some snacks. I continued to the next valley and ate my breakfast before the next ascent. There I realized I forgot to get cash for the alpine huts so I had to walk an extra km but there I found a public toilet. I started to climb the valley and 4 hours + 1800m (altitude) later I made it to the ridge. After a short break I descended into the next valley where I already saw the hut I wanted to stay. I didn't know if they had any beds left because I couldn't check without the internet but luckily I got one. Then I went to a lake close by and went for a swim like some others too. The best thing to do after a hot day climbing up mountains. Once I told some people, what I was doing more and more people were listening even from neighbouring tables. Later we stretched together and enjoyed the last sunlight changing the colour of the sky.

Leaving just before breakfast I went down the valley to the next village where I connected to Wifi to download my Deutscher Alpenverein club card. Otherwise I would've had to pay almost double the price. I bought chips and a banana and continued into the next valley up the mountain again. I knew there was a rain forecast for 11 am and a storm for 2 pm when someone checked the day before. I knew I'll have to walk through rain but tried to get to the next hut before the storm breaks in. The rain was strong combined with the wind but once I got to the hut right before 2 pm the weather changed and I went for a swim in the lake Rappen, where I was when I first went to the Pitz valley. In the evening I met a nice couple and a family who also were fascinated by me Thru Hike. The husband of the couple had his birthday and just before they left I surprised him with the heart glasses. We ended up drinking 2 shots and half an hour later they went to bed.

      Heilbronner Weg ohne Weg

      October 13, 2019 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Read more

      Heuberg, Mittelberg und Walmendingerhorn

      January 12, 2020 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 1 °C

Also, viele gemütliche Gleitwege weit durchs Kleinwalsertal - quasi Genussskifahren bei bestem Wetter 😀😀Read more

      Schokoladenkuchen für 300 Euro

      December 14, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ❄️ -1 °C

Also ab zum Tierarzt. Tschüss 300,- Euro .

      Kempten und Klein Walsertal

      December 7, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Jochen pausiert heute mal... 😀 🎿

Alps Tour - Northwards to Germany

      July 20, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Although the storms seemed to have moved on, and the sun was out, it was by no means warm. We headed out at 9:30 in a fresh 15C.

Winding our way into the first pass of the day towards St. Christoph am Arlberg, with a height of 1793m.
      https://www.stantonamarlberg.com/en/the-region-…

The section of road leading to the Flexen pass, towards Zurs, was mostly constructed on the edge of the mountain through numerous tunnels and snowsheds. It appeared the snowshed retaining walls were quite old, and the roofs constructed later, either way they emitted an intreguing mustiness.

We passed at least a half dozen ski areas, some towns were bustling with multi-season purpose, while others were quite literally shuttered for the summer.

We reached Warth and took a spur route east, just for the ride. The valley towards Steeg was magnificent, and a u-turn near Kleinburg sent us back to Warth, and on our way deeper into Bavaria.

Being such a brisk morning, we decided to stop for a quick coffee, and enjoy a warm homemade apple strudel in Schrocken. With the temperature still around 15C, decided to add the jacket liners as the chill was setting in.

Finally reaching the far valley, we meandered along the highway till we intersected with Schnepfau, and took a narrow winding road over to Bezau before getting back on the highway.

Another side route took us into Scharzenberg, were we fueled up the bikes, and removed the extra layers added earlier; it was now quiet warm out, around 20C. A helped an older gentleman whom was having issues with the self-pay at the pump. Though language was a barrier, enough button mashing did the trick. He happily went on his way, including the open flap for his filler 🤣

Getting nearer to our night's destination, we rode through Riedbergpass. The road resembled more of a mildly accordioned snake with its back-to-back curves slithering through the gulley along the mountain's edge. There wasn't much traffic, and it was so much fun, we decided to do the eastern section twice, by doubling back!

Finally arrived in Oberstdorf mid-afternoon. Once checked in, unpacked, and rested, we went for a short walk to explore the downtown area. There was a fair bit of bustle and activity, and looked as though an upcoming event was being set up.

Back at the hotel, we enjoyed the late afternoon sun in solitude by the outdoor pool.

We decided against doing the hotel buffet dinner; still a little scared from the last buffet dinner... So we wandered in to town to see what was available. Weirdly enough a couple of the places weren't even open for dinner service, and most looked like tourist traps. Settled on a place near the hotel that A had reviewed earlier.

As the sun faded and the evening descended, we were met with the rising strong and overpowering odor of freshly applied manure (commonly used to top dress the surrounding fields) in our hotel room... 🤢 We had left the windows open for fresh air, and were basically suffocated by the aroma. Wee!

      Lunch with a view (Kaiserschmarrn)!

      June 10, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

For lunch we visited the highly reconvened cafe Ulta which was towards the end of the trail from Holzgau. The food was great and I don’t think I’ve ever had a meal with a better view before.

I had a traditional dish called ‘Kaiserschmarrn,’ which is like shredded pancakes but FAR better. They tasted more eggs and very sweet with raisins, lingonberry jam, and Apple sauce, topped with icing sugar… diabetes is knocking at my door.Read more
