      Laguna Llaca

      So we hired a car (with driver) for the day (for about £45) to visit the remote Laguna Llaca which is known to be a good place for finding High Andean birds. Standard tours (which cost about £10 don’t go here). Llaca is pronounced Yaca as double L is pronounced y in Spanish.

      It took over two hours of dirt roads to get there as one road was blocked with roadworks. The driver kept stopping asking locals for directions which inspired confidence.

      The Laguna itself was very close to the glacier and we walked across the moraine and took some photos of the mountain and glacier. Every so often we would hear a crevasse colapse and a small avalanche.

      We did see some new birds which was nice and very much enjoyed this remote location. We also saw numerous Viscachas, mammals that look like rabbits but are no relation and are about 3-4 times the size.

      There were very few people here (only 3 cars through the gate at the bottom of the valley).

      We have very much enjoyed the mountains in this area but are about to move on to Lima (the capital and at sea level too) as we catch an 8.5 hour bus in just over an hour.      Les mer

      Puerto Malabrigo

      In Puerto Malabrigo gefällt es uns so gut, dass wir gleich drei Tage bleiben. Der Ort ist wohl bei Surfern recht bekannt, weil hier mit über 4km die angeblich längste surfbare Welle steht.
      Wir stehen direkt am Strand und können sogar unsere Hängematten aufhängen. Vor uns der riesige, saubere Sandstrand.
      Es herrscht gerade absolute Nebensaison, bis auf ein paar handvoll Surfer ist der Ort ziemlich ausgestorben.
      Die Tage vergehen wie im Fluge mit Baden, Lesen, Backen, mit Familie und Freunden telefonieren, Strandspaziergängen, Sonnenuntergängen…      Les mer

      Climbing Nevado Mateo (5,150m)

      Up at 2.55am this morning to climb my first 5,000m peak - Nevado Mateo. Helen sat this one out.

      It was quite a drive to the start and we were stopped by the police on the way with our driver being in trouble for not having the right licence to carry tourists.

      We started the climb at 6.15am just as the sun was rising. I was delighted the mountains were mostly clear of cloud allowing great views of many 6000m peaks including Peru’s highest. There were six clients climbing in two groups plus 2 Peruvian guides. Myself, a Dutch lady and 4 Israeli young men all on leave from military service.

      After we climbed the rock slope we met the glacier and switched to boots and crampons. The ascent to the summit was similar to many Scottish Munros in winter except the ice was more grippier, we had to cross one crevasse and the air was so thin breathing was hard. A slow plod won the day.

      Great views and emotions from the summit. Very happy to have climbed this high and enjoyed the experience. The pictures speak for themselves but a rewarding challenge and adventure within this big trip of ours.      Les mer

      Hike to Laguna Churup

      We were up early to get a taxi at 6.30 followed by a Collectivo (local minibus) into the mountains. The bus had 14 seats and 19 people on the bus.

      There were 3 main groups on the bus - western hikers with top walking kit, local hikers with normal clothes and bunny ears, locals dressed in indigenous dress including very high hats.

      By 8am we were at the trail head 3,850m and setting off to the Laguna Churup at 4,510m. Going up was twice as hard as at sea level (see video) but we kept plodding and made it.

      We spent about an hour at the top enjoying the views and also birding (10 new birds added but no camera). The views of the mountains and lake were wonderful.

      We were back at the trailhead by 1.20pm and got the bus back to town. Tomorrow we are trekking again and plan to go a bit higher to 4600m to visit Laguna 69.      Les mer

      Laguna 69

      Wir wandern um sechs Uhr noch vor Sonnenaufgang los. Das Tal liegt noch lange im Schatten, lediglich die Schneefelder der umliegenden Berge leuchten schon im Sonnenlicht. Nach drei Stunden und 700 Höhenmetern stehen wir an der Laguna 69 und staunen. Im Talschluss auf über 4600m liegt die intensiv türkisblaue Lagune umgeben von Gletschern und der über 500m hohen Eiswand des Chacraraju. Und das frühe Aufstehen hat sich gelohnt, wir haben den See ganz für uns alleine. Nach einem zweiten Frühstück machen wir uns auf den Rückweg. Und jetzt kommen uns Heerscharen von Wanderern entgegen. Jeder zweite fragt uns, wie weit es noch sei.
      Zurück am Bus gönnen wir uns erst mal eine heiße Dusche und fahren dann runter ins Tal nach Yungas, wo wir am Dorfplatz übernachten.
      Ach ja, der Name der Lagune kommt daher, dass sie namenlos war und bei Gründung des Nationalparks wurden die bislang Namenlosen einfach durchnummeriert.      Les mer

      Parque Nacional Huascarán

      So langsam gehen uns die Superlative aus. Wir fahren eine Runde um den Nevado Huascarán, mit knapp 6800m der höchste Berg Perus. Zwei Tage quer durch die Cordillera Blanca, dem schönsten Teil der Andenkordillere. Gestern fahren wir von Huaraz, wo wir zwei Tage auf einem Campingplatz Station gemacht hatten zum Wäschewaschen lassen, Trittstufe abbauen und ausspannen, in den Nationalpark. Auf bester Asphaltstraße geht es über den Punta Olímpica mit dem angeblich höchsten Straßentunnel der Welt nach Chacas. Auf der Strecke tolle Ausblicke auf die Südseite des Huascaránmassivs und türkisfarbene Lagunen. Ab Chacas dann weiter auf einer schmalen Erdstraße. Die Straße windet sich erst einen Fluss entlang und dann an den steilen Hängen bis Yanamá, wo wir am Dorfplatz vor der Polizeistation übernachten.
      Heute fahren wir dann über den Llanganucopass wieder zurück nach Westen. Von der Passhöhe bestaunen wir die bisher spektakulärsten Ausblicke, quasi rundum reihen sich schnee- und gletscherbedeckte 6000er. In unzähligen Serpentinen geht es wieder runter in ein Hochtal, wo wir auf einer Kuh - und Eselweide unseren nächsten Übernachtungsplatz finden. Von dort wollen wir morgen zu einer besonders spektakulären Lagune wandern.      Les mer

      Ica

      We used Ica as a base to take two day trips. The first to Huacachina, a desert oasis a few kilometers outside the city, where we drove around the sand dunes in a buggy and went sandboarding (lots of fun!). As Ica is the main location in Peru for the production of red wine and pisco, we also went on a tasting tour, starting with the visit of the oldest vineyard in South America - the Tacama winery that has been producing wine since the 1540s - and ending with a tasting of so many local liquors that we couldn't do anything else for the rest of the day 🥴.Les mer

      Gletscher und Puya Raimondii

      Wenn es nicht schon so abgedroschen klingen würde: Wir haben schon wieder eine Traumstraße entdeckt. Am Abra Yanashalla Pass biegen wir nach Westen auf eine kleine Erdstraße ab. Die Straße ist in einem furchtbaren Zustand, voller Potholes und alle paar Kilometer ein nur notdürftig geräumter Erdrutsch. Aber die Landschaft und die Aussichten sind atemberaubend. An mehreren Gletschern vorbei, mit Sicht auf grüne Hochtäler und weiß glitzernde 6000er. Wir freuen uns mal wieder, das perfekte Auto zu haben: 10cm breiter, und wir hätten umdrehen müssen. Und auch sämtliche Böschungswinkel haben wir komplett ausgereizt. Dabei musste jetzt leider die Trittstufe endgültig dran glauben.
      Nach 2 Stunden kommen wir zum Glaciar Pastoruri. Vom Parkplatz sind es noch ca. 2km bergauf bis zum Gletscher. Von Westen kommend ist die Straße anscheinend besser in Schuss, es stehen noch ein paar Tourbusse auf dem Parkplatz, hauptsächlich mit peruanischen Touristen. Dabei zwei Frauen in Pumps, High Heels und mit Handtaschen. Auf 5000m. Skurril.
      Nachmittags fahren wir wieder runter und finden auf 4200m einen tollen Übernachtungsplatz. Der ganze Hang ist voller Puya Raimondii, einer Bomeliaceae, verwandt mit der Ananas. Ein faszinierendes Gewächs: Sie werden bis zu 15m hoch, leben bis zu 100 Jahre, blühen aber nur einmal nach frühestens 40 Jahren und sterben dann. Scheint mir irgendwie eine Sackgasse der Evolution zu sein. Aber schön anzusehen.      Les mer

      Lima

      'Lima la Gris' lived up to its nickname; during our three days here we didn't see the sun once. There is a colonial centre and a pre-Hispanic archeological site, but our focus was mainly culinary, cruising the many vegan spots in town. Outside the central modern neighborhoods full of expats, we also ventured into the suburbs where people have to make do with a lot less. It's easy to forget that 30% of Peru lives in poverty when you're sipping from your chai latte in a trendy coffee shop ... 😳. We had some interesting talks with locals about the problematic government corruption here, making us appreciate our privilege to be able to travel once more.Les mer

      Huaraz

      We stayed in Huaraz for ten days and could easily have stayed ten more. There is so much to do and see!

      To get used to the altitude (the city sits at 3052m above sea level), we did several day hikes. Wilcacocha offered the first beautiful overview of the Cordillera Blanca. We made trips to Laguna Parón and Laguna Churup, two of the 882 high-altitude mountain lakes in this mountain range.

      After this, we were sufficiently acclimatized for the real deal! We set off on the Santa Cruz trek on our own. That way, we could make a stop at the famous Laguna 69 along the way, add a detour to yet another alpine lake and do the trek in 3 days instead of 4. It was so nice to camp among the impressive mountains (although a bit cold as well - our tent was completely frozen every morning ❄️).

      After the trek, we visited the Pastoruri Glacier, which has shrunk tremendously in recent years 😢. Miel left that same night to gain his first mountaineering experience, climbing the glaciated Cerro Mateo (5150m) 🏔️.      Les mer
