      Barcelona day 3

      4 Nisan, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Today, we got up and had some breakfast beers in the sun with some donairs! After we joined our hostel for a walking tour of Sagrada famillia. A building has never left me lost for words, but the Sagrada Famillia did. We learned how the city of barcelona was expanding fast. They decided to build way outside of where the city was because they knew the city would catch up. They wanted to represent that by building the fanciest craziest church around. The first architect only worked on the church for a year because he wasn't making extravagant enough. They fired him on good terms and asked him who he thought could do what they envisioned. He recommended a young Antoni Gaudi, who was fascinated by nature and its fractal shapes. He loved that nothing in nature was a straight line. He wanted to apply that to Sagrada Famillia. He definitely did, as you can see. He dedicated the last 30+ years of his life to this project, designing all the sculptures and designing the entire building himself. Every detail of this building is symbolic for something, and I thought that was so cool. Once it's done, the only thing in all of barcelona that will be taller than Sagrada Famillia is a nearby mountain. He purposley designed it to be 2M shorter than this mountain because he didn't want to offend God. That's pretty generous towards a fella he's never met. If it was me, I'd make it 2M taller than the tallest mountain lol. I guess that is why I'm not the lead architect on one of the seven wonders of the world. He was completely obsessed with the Bascilla. At the time of his death, his baby was only 25% complete. He was buried in the crypt. The Sagrada Famillia has been under construction for the last 142 years and is expected to be completely finished in 2026, but the tour guide doesn't believe it at all. That's because in Gaudis's plans, there is supposed to be a park across the street from the front gates, but when they bought their land way outside of the city, they couldn't afford to buy the land across the street. A private company bought the land and slapped an apartment building up right next to it. Since then, the church has been saying they will tear down the apartments once construction is complete. The apartment has a banner hanging from it, saying, "Our houses are legal." That might delay some things. Unfortunately, tickets were completely sold out, so we couldn't go inside. Maybe one day I'll make it back and see the inside. After we walked up a massive hill to go see a place called parc güell, which was also sold out. I'm gonna be honest I got a little frustrated. We walked way too long for that shit to be sold out as well, so I was annoyed. I guess we need to start booking ahead. Afterward, we decided we'd go check out the Gothic Quarter. This was super cool. The other church we saw was called La Seu. Its constriction was finished in 1448, so it's decently old lol. We kept wandering in the Gothic Quarter and found these narrow streets filled with little bars, so we stopped for a beer at one. Once we sat down, I swear I had to try not to fall asleep inside. We were getting hungry, so we went to a grocery store, we grabbed 4 burgers, spaghetti, and pasta sauce all for 8 euros. That might be the cheapest spaghetti meatsauce I've ever had, but it was so good! That's about it for today, though.

      Park Guell #1

      12 Mayıs 2022, Ispanya ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

I'm starting to get a little obsessed with Gaudi, can you tell?

Park Guell was originally going to be a community up on the hill, but it was ahead of its time. Only one house was ever bought (the descendants of the same family still live there).

This place is absolutely magical. Someone should try to do something like this now!

      ¡Proxima Parada - Barcelona!

      16 Nisan, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Ankunft in Madrid.

      Now in Barcelona

      27 Nisan, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

..and the Spanish adventures begin. slightly sad to leave France, as I feel much more comfortable speaking French, and we love being there, but exciting to arrive here, and Amr always rises to the occasion and is the spokesman, and does so well in being understood and understanding!

Anyway, our day started by filling in time till the train at 4.28pm…we had a late checkout, so didn’t have to vacate till 2 which was nice, and we wandered about, and went to an area fairly near us, called Antigone, which is a whole district, 37 hectares Wikipedia tells me, which has been built in neo-classical style, and started in the 1970s…it is so unusual, and nice to walk through…there is a big walkway down the middle, like the champs élysées...so we wiled away the day, and then waited in the station, that process when everyone watches the board to find the platform for the train…ours was an AVE (Spanish TGV) and had started in Lyon, arrived and left exactly on time, and was totally full, as this is Friday and I guess everyone is going somewhere for the weekend.

Easy 3 hour journey and we arrived about 7.30…Barcelona much more comfortable temperature, we actually feel just right here. Montpellier continued to feel cold, even though that very strong had died down for the last couple of days. So after sitting in the train we decided to walk to the hotel…about 4 kms…it was daylight and our legs needed it!! The walking was good, and we love the wide boulevards of Barcelona and the great buildings, but finding the right road was the only anxiety, and really it was just a straight line basically…but Google kept changing its little tweaks…but we found the hotel, where we had stayed before in 2017, and have a great room with a view of the Sagrada Familia.

Had a baguette on the train, but went out for a wine and tapas to unwind in a little place just opposite, and now relaxed!

      Saturday in Barcelona

      27 Nisan, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

You can’t help loving Barcelona! I must say I wasn’t keen on being in a big city just yet, but the beautiful buildings, wide leafy boulevards just blow you away. Got up leisurely and found a lovely patisserie to have breakfast - a large glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, a yum pastry and a cup of probably the best coffee so far this trip! We will go there tomorrow (hope they’re open on Sundays).

Then we walked off, no special destination, but went down the road that leads to the arc de triomf, walked in the park there, then went across through the old medieval narrow streets, and visited the cathedral (not Sagrada Familia). Had a wonderful visit…it is a magnificent building, and our ticket allowed entry to the cloisters and up to the rooftop. We can never resist the views from high place, and it was fabulous!

After that we walked across to La Rambla and joined the crowds there, by this time getting to midday. Went just about down to the sea front, and then back into the markets which were incredibly buzzing and fun, and I felt totally carefree with nothing in my pockets except a tissue, lip balm and the hotel key! Nothing to pick. We sat at one of the stalls and had our favourite pimientos de padron and some grilled asparagus with bread…perfect, and glad we did as found out the market is closed Sundays.

This is the first day for a while that I haven’t felt just a bit uncomfortably cold….in fact we both rather wished we could have shed a layer. It was just right, and the possible rain showers never eventuated, or so far anyway. As we walked we kept admiring the fabulous buildings and wide streets…varied apartment buildings, fancy balconies, so lovely to walk along. Stopped for a coffee and a ColaCao!! Back in the land of ColaCao - if you ask for a chocolat here they think you want the thick chocolate that you dip churros in - and it’s usually not available anyway…only at churros time.

After a little downtime and drawing of breath, we set out again, and decided to walk back to the market as we wanted to eat at a Basque restaurant we had loved before, and tomorrow wasn’t possible. On the way Amr spotted an interesting entrance all lit up, and we found ourselves in a rather upmarket, and very hip and happening, area of bars and tapas..el Nacional…so we with a bit of difficulty found 2 seats and had a glass of wine and one small tapa and enjoyed the vibe!

Made our way to the still busy market and had dinner (really more tapas, true dining doesn’t start here till well after 8)…and we’re a little let down, it was good but the Basque-ness seems to have gone…maybe taken over by non Basques…and now back, walking through the milling throngs…I will be happy to be back in small villages and towns after Monday! But we are having fun, and have another whole day here. I have to add that our rambling today added up to 20 kms!

Willkommen in Europa 🤑😂.Okumaya devam et

      Barcelona Day 4

      11 Nisan 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Day Four in Barcelona was a memorable one! Started our day off by heading out on a sailboat to the Mediterranean where the were able to turn off the engine and pull up the sails while drinking Cava! After our fun little excursion we decided to walk the beach and grab a pitcher of sangria with more patatas bravas! On our way back to our hotel we swung into a popular wine bar and enjoyed a couple different wines - one of which we ended up purchasing a bottle of to bring home (or drink one of the upcoming nights) after our long walk home we decided to stop by this restaurant called Anxoita where we tried our first ever raw cod skewer. Safe to say it is something we hope to never see in the US! Luckily, to no surprise, we were ordered more patatas bravas.

After a nice little siesta in the sun we grabbed a couple cocktails at our rooftop bar in the hotel and enjoyed the view of the city! We then headed off to Kyle’s pick for dinner called Solomillo and as usual it was “interesting.” You can see in a couple pictures we had two different filets, mortadella, and a dish called lettuce and onions. It was quite literally romaine lettuce and yellow onions with dressing. After leaving dinner we headed over to el Nacional for a glass of wine before ending our night at Obama’s where Molly was invited to sing for the bar! She was killing it up until she got stage fright and forgot the lyrics! We knew it was time to go after that and our night was done.

      Barcelona

      20 Haziran 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Barcelona is a vibrant, busy and cosmopolitan city. Filled with tourists from everywhere - lots of youngsters who must have finished uni for the year. Some of the highlights of our few days in Barcelona are (in no particular order):
      - [ ] Eating in the many tapas bars, often with incredible street buskers. In fact street buskers can be seen all over the gothic quarter at all hours of the day and night
      - [ ] Getting lost trying to navigate the many narrow lane ways
      - [ ] A walking tour of the old parts, venturing into the Gothic quarter, Jewish quarter showing Roman and medieval time periods. We explored the many narrow lanes and as many churches.
      - [ ] A Spanish Classical guitar concert accompanied by flamenco dancers in the most incredible music concert hall, Palau de la Musica.
      - [ ] Walking alongside the Harbourside were the rich and famous moor their yachts.
      - [ ] Walking down la Rambla, which is packed with people, who are shopping or taking a stroll to soak up the vibe
      - [ ] Visiting and sampling at the food market with the most incredible selection - lots of seafood of every kind, meat selection, cheeses, fruits, nuts and different tapa selections. We sampled the Catalan vermouth and agreed we would be back for more
      - [ ] We caught the metro to the funicular and cable car to Montjuïc which had stunning views over Barcelona including the Mediterranean sea and activity on the bay harbour
      - [ ] We had Lunch at Salts, a restaurant with views over the Olympic diving pool and city
      - [ ] We caught a Metro to La Pedrera - one of Gaudís famous apartment blocks. Also Casa Batlló - another of Gaudi’s creations. Gaudi was an absolute genius, born well before his time. His creativity using aspects from nature with geometry is mind blowing. Builders must have hated him!
      - [ ] We walked down Passeig de Gràcia, a street with all the high end shops
      - [ ] Visited Santa Maria del Mar, a fine example of gothic church and built and funded by the community. We attended Mass at the Cathedral (in Catalan, just when we have learnt all the Spanish responses). May as well have been a different country.
      - [ ] Attended a not so great Psalm concert at the Cathedral after Mass - I think more a local attraction with artists that must have been great in their time!
      - [ ] The many sampling of the finest ice creams we have tasted
      - [ ] Visited Sagrada Familia (Basillica of the Holy Family) - just Wow!!! Another of Gaudis’s creations. Building commenced in the late 1800s and will be completed in the next 10 years. Gaudi new that it would not be completed in his life time but left all the plans and models to be completed in generations to come. It is built purely from donations (no government or church funding). The intricate details and every thought that has gone into its creation are an absolute wonder - no explanation will do it justice. We also went up the Passion tower. We caught the lift up but then had to walk down the 400 steps. I am not great at heights so managed the odd peak but certainly didn’t do it justice. Thankfully Anthony took some photos.
      - [ ] We went to Mass in the crypt built beneath the altar. Again the detail was incredible. Somehow he managed to create the perfect amount of lighting and we were there as the sun was setting so the light reflecting from the stain glass windows in the Basilica gave a beautiful hue of colours.
      - [ ] We were also lucky enough to experience the festivities of The birth of St John the Baptist which coincides with the Summer solstice each year and so seen to be the introduction of summer proper. The whole of Barcelona was a huge party with bonfires, fireworks, concerts, dancing and singing. Families and youngsters out in full force - a lovely experience.
      Adios Espana- Hasta luego

Day 13 - Santiago to Barcelona (post Cam

      9 Ekim 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I arrived in Barcelona this afternoon safe and sound having taken my fifth flight on this trip. My hotel is fabulous. I am on the top floor, and I can see the Sagrada Familia from my private balcony! I've decided to get room service (wine included) for my evening meal and am currently sitting on my balcony, enjoying my white wine (as recommended by the taxi driver), as I take in the city lights (and the Cathedral). I'm very much looking forward to tomorrow.Okumaya devam et

      Barcelona, Spain

      13 Aralık 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I was so blessed to be able to relax these past few days with two of my favorite people: my Mom and my Aunt B. I was SO excited to see them and spend time with them. I arrived in Barcelona on Wednesday and met them at our hotel. The hotel was beautiful and located on a busy shopping street with many nice stores and restaurants all around. The first day we found a place to get tapas, enjoyed a coffee in the hotel lounge, and had a yummy Italian dinner. The next few days we went to a basilica, the spa, and walked around the pier. The bright blue sky and palm trees reminded me so much of Santa Barbara. On Saturday we took a day trip to Montserrat. It was about an hour and a half train ride up the mountain to the little village. We went to the monastery, the museum, and went out to the viewpoints. It was good to get out of the city for a few hours and to enjoy nature and some beautiful architecture. Overall, our time was really nice. We ate some good food, met a lot of wonderful people, and I started transitioning out of speaking German. It still is hard for me to say "no" instead of "nein", but maybe those German phrases will just become a part of my vocabulary haha:) Right now I am at the airport ready to head home. Pray for safe travels today and that I make it home when I am supposed to. So far so good, but you know airports... anything could happen. Love you all and so happy to see many of you soon.Okumaya devam et
