      Day 3 Larrasoana Spain
      Distance from Burguete to Larrasoana 24kms

      Leaving Burguete in the rain this morning gave us the opportunity to put our ponchos to the test. Not the most sexy looking outfit but they kept us dry and are light to carry. Walked through mud and slippery downhill rocky paths so we had to be extra careful to avoid injury. We passed a 12th Century Monastery with its own cemetery 16th Century buildings and Roman bridges (which we walked over) and navigated the tricky terrain. It took us nearly 8 hours to walk 24kms to arrive at our accommodation for the night (with 3 short stops). Staying at a lovely albergue had a delicious pilgrim 3 course dinner and looking forward to the walk into Pamplona tomorrow.Lue lisää

      I think I can remember several short stretches in which it wasn’t raining, but my memory has one overriding picture of a rainy and very windy day. There was one stretch out in a big field when I could see the wind blowing sheets of rain across my path. It was a memorable day, because it has been years and years and years since I had a full day of rain on the Camino.

      Today’s route goes up to a high spot with great views, but there would be no views today. I had already decided. I was going to take an alternate lower route so that I could visit a Romanesque church— and if you can believe it, the rain stopped just as I got there, so that I could take out my phone and take pictures of this really beautiful doorway.

      It was raining when I started out, but not a pounding rain. After several hours, though, my feet were completely soaked and were not going to get any wetter. So I became less picky about working my way around puddles.

      The early part of the walk has two petos de ánimas (alms box for the souls in purgatory — I never did understand how payment would make its way up to get their release, though). And then comes the only bar on this 26 km stretch (which is why the crowds have not yet descended on this Camino). I remembered the owner from several other Caminos and it was fun to hear her impressions of how things have changed.

      After that stop at about 8 km, my next stop, about 4 hours later, was a little covered Galician bus stop. There I bumped into a forum member— She was heading out and we agreed to meet up at dinner.

      I try to find the beauty in these days, and there was plenty today to keep my spirits in good order. How can I complain when I’m 73 and still walking caminos?! Once you descend into a chorus of whining about the rain, things get self-pitying, and what’s the point of that?

      It was great to arrive at the Hostal/Albergue, though, where I have once again opted for a private room. No hairdryer today so my shoes will probably be wet tomorrow, but that’s OK because more rain is forecast anyway!      Lue lisää

      IX. REDONDELA - PONTEVEDRA

      Die letzte Unterkunft war echt ein Träumchen. In Redondela haben sich der Küsten- und der traditionelle Weg gekreuzt. Heißt, ab hier stoßen wir jetzt auf die Pilger, die vorher den Weg durchs Innland gegangen sind. Tatsächlich sind die Hostels hier deutlich besser ausgestattet, organisierter und größer. Auch die Anzahl der Hostels ist deutlich gestiegen. Zum Frühstück gabs erstmal Bacalhau, klar - why not?! 🙈

      Das Wetter war zu Beginn viel besser als erwartet und so zogen wir im Schneckentempo (da Francesca Schmerzen in der Wade hat) im Ponchostyle los. Das ganze fühlte sich leicht nach Klassenfahrt für alte Menschen an, da so viele auf einem Haufen unterwegs waren 😅

      Raquel trug bereits am Anfang ihre Prada-Plastiktüten-Boots, ich habe mich erst bei Regen für meine weiße Gucci Variante entscheiden… und ich sag’s euch, ich sah aus wie die ein Volltrottel, aber ich hatte trockene Füße als wir in Pontevedra ankamen 🥰

      Für eine Weile ging ich mit Guiseppe 🇮🇹 und später mit Magda 🇵🇱 mit Magda hatte ich eines der besten Gespräche hier auch dem Weg und es hat mir wahnsinnig gut getan. Wir haben viel darüber gesprochen, dass wir nur dieses eine Leben haben und wir selbst für uns verantwortlich sind und ganz wichtig, dass wir nicht für anderer verantwortlich sind. Dass wir schauen müssen, dass es uns gut geht, dass wir unsere Ziele erreichen und unsere Wünsche erfüllen, dass wir etwas ändern können wenn wir unzufrieden sind, aber dass wir das eben selbst für uns tun müssen. Dass wir Zeit mit Menschen verbringen sollten die wir wirklich mögen und die uns genau so mögen, vor allem genau so wie wir sind, und die uns gut tun! Dass es wichtig ist seine eigenen Grenzen zu kennen und zu setzen. Ich mochte dieses Gespräch, weil es genau die Dinge waren über die ich in letzter Zeit sehr viel nachgedacht haben! ❤️ Magda wohnt zwei Wochen im Monat in Berlin und zwei Wochen in Polen. Wenn wir zurück sind wollen wir uns nochmal auf einen Kaffee treffen ☺️

      Highlight des Tages war, dass uns Nana eingeholt hat und wir uns völlig unerwartet bei strömendem Regen an einem Stand für Stempel, Souvenirs und Kaffee unterwegs getroffen haben. Happy as fuck 🥰 nach einer kleinen Pause bin ich mit Nana weiter und wir verabredeten uns noch für später zum Essen. So ein wahnsinnig lustiger Abend. Irgendwas scheine ich an mir zu haben, dass ich sie ständig zum Lachen bringen kann 😅 bei ihr muss ich natürlich auch meinen ganzen Blödelkram machen der mir auf deutsch leichter fällt als auf englisch 😅 allgemein bekomme ich hier sehr oft gesagt, dass ich eine sehr offene, fröhliche und positive Ausstrahlung habe. Finde ich total krass, weil ich mich selbst oft ganz anders wahrnehme 🙈 und ich versuche diese netten Worte einfach anzunehmen ☀️

      Zum Abendessen gabs erstmal Meerestierchen, ich muss das hier noch ausnutzen bevor ich in Deutschland wieder zum Vegetarier werde 🥴 und zum Nachtisch noch eine riesen Portion Churros - die besten Churros meines Lebens 🤞🏼🥰

      In der Unterkunft habe ich noch Rosa 🇩🇪 Pedro 🇪🇸 und Mario (war ein bisschen strange 😅) 🇮🇹 kennengelernt und viele andere saßen im Gemeinschaftsraum zusammen, super schön :) Ich hoffe, dass wir die nächsten Abende auch so schön zusammenkommen 🥰

      To Chantada — 34 km and 900 m

      It felt weird leaving this morning, knowing that I would not be meeting up with Clare, since she was heading to Madrid. Time to make a mental adjustment.

      When I left Monforte this morning, I had pretty much made up my mind to stop after about 24 km in a new albergue that has been built inside the 14th century Bishops Palace adjacent to a beautiful 12th century Romanesque church. I’ve never been able to see the inside of the church, and I heard that the hospitalera had the key. On the way, I went to two lookout spots over the Minho River to see my other favorite horseshoe bend. The regional government has spent a lot of money, improving the lookout points, and the views were great, even though it was cloudy.

      When I got to the albergue, had a rest, and visited the church and the albergue facilities, I just couldn’t bring myself to stop walking. It was not raining, there was no one else there, and everything all around was wet, I decided to do the last 8 km into Chantada . This meant descending on a beautiful but slightly wet and slippery trail, crossing the river and then ascending to the top on the other side.

      The Minho Valley is supposedly its own microclimate, and when I crested the top for the last 5 km into Chantada, the gusts of cold wind and strong rain hit me in the face. Just as things were feeling grim, I came upon a group of very joyous Portuguese pilgrims. The time passed quickly, but I was so happy to arrive in my hotel. Hair dryer, heat, towel heating rack— all of those amenities were very much appreciated.      Lue lisää

      Long walk to Frómista

      Another amazing day, but quite a long one…about 27 kms, though Amr’s watch says 28…but it again was sensational, except just when we had almost arrived, and were enjoying walking along the canal de Castillo there was a diversion and we had to take a long cut around some works, where it looks like they are putting a highway through…probably only an extra km but it was a bit boring!

      Otherwise it was great - we set off about 9, and it was cold but not icy, and left Castrojeriz and the first thing was a long climb - about 1.5 kms and 900 metres - which we knew from before, but this time it was a sparkling green and amazing panorama back to Castrojeriz. We had always thought wow, but in spring WOW! The you walk across the plateau and down the other side, steeper but fortunately paved so no sliding loose stones, and another great vista on the other side.

      Then it went on, always green and lovely, and undulating, but it was long. There are many wild flowers - rogue yellow rapeseed plants dotted, rosemary bushes now flowering, and we found from Rachel’s app that one rather straggly but pretty flower was “rocket salad” and looked carefully, and smelt the leaves, and it was rocket, arugula. And there are poppies, and we identified a Judas tree flowering beautifully. We stopped for a break (but to my horror they didn’t do ColaCao) and otherwise just plowed on.

      Got to the lovely canal de Castillo before reaching Frómista and stopped in a bar before even finding the hotel. Finally I had my ColaCao, and it was in a ColaCao glass!!! A first! Also, while we were sitting there an American pilgrim came up to Amr and said how much he loved the hat!! I thought all who have commented would appreciate that…Then found our hotel, all in the same one tonight, and a new one for us. A very modern ecohotel, and large modern room and such a huge bed we will lose each other. All meeting for dinner later, at a restaurant they have given us vouchers for.      Lue lisää

      Burguete

      Day 2 Burguete Spain
      Distance from Orrison to Burguete - 21kms

      Woke to a brilliant sunrise and a chilly temperature of 6c. The climb today was up and over the Pyrenees crossing the border between France and Spain. The Pyrenees again challenged us with it’s unbelievable icy wind but rewarded us with the spectacular views of green rolling hills whilst all the while climbing to the top Col de Lepoeder 1450m. We were thrilled to arrive at the top and make our way down through woodland where we spied a red squirrel climbing a tree. We ate our lunch in a sunny sheltered spot overlooking the valley and made our way to the tiny village of Burguete. We are staying at a delightful rural hostel with more than 100 years of history and was the habitual residence of Ernest Hemingway it still has the piano bearing his name.
      Spoilt tonite with our own room and bathroom (such a luxury) and after a big day will sleep well tonight.      Lue lisää

      Got lost along the highway, much more rain, boots completely soaked, but it was still a pleasant day. Trail angels set up a nice covered shelter where we ate and drank and had international conversations. We follow the yellow arrows but they're not always helpful. At the end of the day we have the most luxurious lodgeings: jacuzzi tub, flat screen TV, free laundry, coffee, breakfast :)Lue lisää

      Bienvenido a Finca Sacristia

      Cette fois-ci, c’est Clara qui fait parler sa plus belle plume pour votre plus grand plaisir 🪶

      On passe 2 superbes semaines dans une finca dans les terres au nord de Malaga 🌸

      Nos journées sont rythmées avec un bon petit déjeuner partagé avec les volontaires et la famille, 4h de jardinage jusqu’à ce que la cloche sonne à 13h pour aller manger.
      Chaque repas est un véritable festin avec des produits frais, des sauces incroyables et des jus délicieux (photos à l’appui) …
      Tout est fait maison : le pain, le chocolat et j’en passe !
      Nos après midi elles sont principalement à base de siestes et relaxations …
      On dort dans des caravanes sous les oliviers, c’est top : into the wild 2.0 🍋

      On est immergé dans un mode de vie 0 déchet, c’est hyper inspirant !
      Tout est revalorisé : on plante, on cueille, on mange puis vamos aux toilettes écologiques 🚽💩 et on réutilise ♻️
      Pareil pour l’eau : l’eau de la douche, de la vaisselle est réutilisée pour arroser les différents arbres fruitiers.
      On apprend pleins de choses sur la permaculture, c’est hyper intéressant !

      Et qui l’eut cru, on s’expérimente même à la médiation et au yoga … oui oui, on a bien ouvert nos chakras tout en réalisant nos meilleurs chandelles et salutations au soleil 🧘‍♂️🧘‍♀️

      C’est tellement reposant … Tout ce dont on avait besoin pour se reposer après 1 mois de vacances aux Canaries quoi !

      Une petite famille en or, on part en étant un peu triste de les quitter …

      Das Expedition Leader Training

      Hier einmal die Hintergrundgeschichte unseres Spaniendrehs:
      BMW Motorrad bringt ein neues, exklusives Training heraus: der BMW Motorrad Expedition Leader, für die besten BMW Motorrad GS Fahrer - Vorraussetzung ist, bereits zertifizierter Offroad Instructor und Motorrad Tourguide zu sein. Das ist die neue höchste Fahrerausbildung, die nicht nur physische Riding Skills erfordert, sondern auch mechanische Skills zur Reparatur und Abtransport von verunfallten Motorrädern, medizinische Erste Hilfe Ausbildung mit Verbinden, Schienen, im Notfall bis zum Luftröhrenschnitt, und auch mentale Leadership Skills benötigt. Die Gruppe muss trotz verschiedenen Persönlichkeiten aus verschiedenen Nationen sicher und mit klaren Ansagen geführt werden, da jeder Fehler im Zweifel tödlich ausgehen kann.

      Für dieses erste Mal, wo dieses Training stattfindet, wurden 8 Teilnehmer aus der ganzen Welt ausgewählt, und wir sind zu viert als filmische Begleitung dabei. Mit dabei sind die beiden Erfinder des Trainings als Instruktoren, der motorradfahrende Unfallchirurg ‚Doc Tom‘, der sich gestern nach einer allergischen Reaktion auf einen Bienenstich mit zwei Anti-Histaminspritzen offroad selbst behandeln musste, der Mechaniker Gerdi, der im Pickup hinterherfährt und neben unseren Kunden auch Shawn Thomas, der als Moderator aus dem USA dabei ist.

      Heute geht es durch die Gorafe Wüste, dem Grand Canyon von Andalousien, ich bin gerade auf der Anfahrt und sehr gespannt.      Lue lisää
