Field museum, walking and west loop

    February 28, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 5 °C

We had a lie in til 6am today so had another mammoth hotel breakfast then walked through Grant Park to the Field museum. We saw a Noah’s arc of taxidermy which really dicks all over the Booth museum (and the Natural History while we’re at it) We also went to see Sue, the most complete T-Rex skeleton which was pretty cool too. After that I was done so we decided to skip the other exhibits and walked back to downtown in the beautiful sunshine. The temperature had definitely gone up and I even had to take my coat off. Hello Spring! We then stopped for a drink at the bean and watched people posing for their photos before walking to the west loop which was about 30 minutes away. It was a cool neighbourhood with lots of regeneration going on. The plan was to have a few drinks at the Time Out food hall then have an early dinner at Au Chaval which had come highly recommended but a combination of a massive breakfast and the last few days of crap sleep and loads of walking really caught up with my pregnant self so we decided to call it quits and get a cab back to the hotel. I managed to stay awake long enough to find a nice restaurant online which happened to be two door down so we slipped off for dinner before passing out at 8pm 🥱Read more

    Liverpool, fish, buildings and Cindys

    February 27, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

We both woke up at 3 cursing jet lag and waited around until it was a reasonable time to get up. We went for breakfast at Wildberrys opposite Millennium Park and were served an obscene amount of food. I genuinely don’t know how they expect anyone to eat that much. We’re both pigs but couldn’t get anywhere near to finishing it. We then waddled along the street for a bit before hopping in a cab to a bar which boasts itself as being the official Liverpool supporters bar in Chicago. It was a good job we got there when we did as it was rammed. Turns out Americans love English football and there was a very strong Chicago contingent getting through pints at 9:30. The game went on for approximately 33 hours thanks to no goals in the game or 30 minutes of extra time. After penalties we finally got a Liverpool win so left to go to the Shed which is a really nice aquarium. Not much more to say than that. It had fish and was nice. We walked back along the shore and then headed to do a boat tour which went along the river and gave loads of information about all the Chicago architecture. Sounds boring but was really good. Layering up more was a massive error though as the sun went down and so did our core body temperatures. We legged it back to the hotel after to get warm and have dinner at Cindys which is on the roof of the hotel. We managed to stay up til 9pm!Read more

    The Plunge!

    February 26, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ -3 °C

Up and early for breakfast in the grand old drawing room of our hotel (Chicago Athletic) before crossing the road to check out the Bean. Sadly some twat had graffitied it (made the news) but it didn’t stop us/me trying to get all the wanky photos. It was such a gorgeous day with bright blue skies and crisp snow everywhere so we walked along the lake to the beach where the Polar plunge was due to take place. The guys had managed to shovel throw about 5 feet of icy snow to make a walkway into the lake which thankfully wasn’t frozen. It was an amazing atmosphere down at the beach and they had raised $40,000 already at this point. I was on video and bag duty which made me feel useful as I watched everyone dunk themselves in the lake. In two minds as to whether I was sad not to be doing it but I was heard saying on numerous times that I’d do it next year as long as someone holds the baby 🤦🏻‍♀️
After the plunge we walked back to the hotel for Phil to thaw out then headed out to a bar to meet up with the others. Shots after shots were drunk which made for fun watching. Phil had been awake for hours by this point so we headed out for a deep dish pizza (undecided but definitely got gout now) then crashing in bed.

    Bye bye Brooklyn

    June 5, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We got up and used the shared bathroom one last time. We wandered out to find some street art which luckily wasn’t far from the apartment. After stopping for some breakfast (yep another bagel) we got on the subway and headed into manhattan for the last time. Since it wasn’t far from the beginning of Brooklyn Bridge we detoured to the 9/11 memorial which was heaving but still really peaceful. There were a few twats taking gormlessly grinning selfies (why?!) but generally it felt very respectful. We then started the sweaty walk over the bridge. Annoyingly it was the hottest day of our trip and the only day we’d have to lug our rucksacks around. It turns out Phil REALLY doesn’t like the heat which was tough as he was stuck on a mile long bridge (with me being unsympathetic) when we finally got off the bridge and found some shade he perked right up. We enjoyed the view of Manhattan whilst figuring out what we were going to do for the next few hours, settling on eating and drinking which made us both happy. After lunch we wandered to Dumbo and found an indoor food hall where we stopped for a pint (of Brooklyn lager obvs) before getting the subway for the last time to the airportRead more

    Who you going to call?

    June 4, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Up early again so it was straight out onto the streets and this time we went all the way up to Central Park stopping for breakfast bagels on the way. After walking through the park we stopped at the lake and thought we’d have a go on the boats. After nearly an hour of trying not to crash into anything or fall in whilst looking at the Manhattan skyline we stopped for a glass of wine by the edge of the lake. We walked to Strawberry fields and left before the man on his guitar broke into Imagine. Then it was off to Little Italy for a snack which turned out to be a massive plate of pasta each and a bottle of wine. When in Rome....... After filling out bellies we went to Greenwich village (again) to go and see the ghostbusters fire house where I made numerous jokes about Phil looking like Egon. He took it well. Since it was happy hour we went to bar 230 where I nearly didn’t get in because I’d left my ID at the apartment. When will I learn?! I successfully persuaded the guy on the door that I was over 21 and we went up to a very crowded rooftop which had alright views but not quite what I was hoping for. We drank up and got the subway to the upper west side for more happy hour drinks and teppenyaki which was really tasty and entertaining in equal measureRead more

Can we go to Greenwich Village?

    June 3, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Up silly early but thankfully not too tired. We managed to (mostly) avoid seeing anyone in our shared apartment and headed out onto the train towards the west village. Highlights we’re seeing a pug in an ikea bag. Lowlights were it was pretty stuffy. We got off at the High Line and walked along snapping the streets below us and playing how many yellow taxis can you see. We then went to Chelsea market and grabbed some bagels which we ate in the square outside before walking through Greenwich Village to get to the Color Factory, an interactive, immersive pop up of pure colourful fun. After eating free ice cream and knobbing around in a giant ball pit we headed over to MOMA to fool ourselves into thinking we are cultural. We definitely made the right choice by starting at the top as that it where all the big dogs are. We saw Andy Warhol, Picasso, Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock before feeling a bit arted out. We then strolled through 5th Avenue stopping at St Patrick’s and Grand Central Station (for a look and much needed snacks) Then it was onto Carragher’s where Phil lived his best life rewatching Liverpool beat Tottenham and getting to hold a trophy. 3 pints in and we were starving to since we were near Koreatown we found a really nice Korean restaurant called Barn Joo 35. Then it was on the train again and back to BrooklynRead more

    Hangover airlines

    June 2, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We got up at 5:15 both still drunk from the night before and made our way to the bus stop. It all seemed like a good idea when we booked it before. Anyway who cares we’re off to New York, the city that never sleeps which is just as well as we haven’t had any. Nice flight over and stress free security. We decided to get an Uber to the apartment as we were too tired/lazy to negotiate the train. We were met by our host who showed us around the loft which is full of old vintage furniture. It’s cosy and there are others staying here but it was a steal compared to hotels so I guess it’s worth it. We decided to head out to the local area for food and beers and got caught in a thunder storm which soaked us. For some reason I thought it was funny. Phil not so much. We drank 2 extortionate but nice beers which I said looked like ascitic fluid but tasted lovely before heading to Roberta’s for pizza. It was no fatto a Mano (in taste or price) but was really good. We said hipster a lot as we walked through the neighbourhood which is a real mix of Latino and gentrification. We crashed out when we got back as we realised we’d been awake for nearly 24 hours which is miraculous given the state we were inRead more

    Hunter Valley

    December 4, 2018 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

Up ridiculously early but for an exciting reason. We went wine tasting! We had a two hour drive out to Hunter valley where we got to try out loads of wine, cheese and vodka. If I’m honest it wasn’t the best out of the tastings I’ve done and the scenery wasn’t as pretty BUT I got to see kangaroos 🦘 so that was a total bonus. We ended up back in the city nowhere near as tipsy as I’d have liked and crashed out in front of Gavin and StaceyRead more

    City

    December 3, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Woke up without a hangover which was the absolute best feeling ever! Pippa and I headed into the city centre walking through the botanical garden to see the harbour which is huge and so exciting to see in real life. Unfortunately the weather was more English winter than Australian summer so my plans of wanky Instagram photos of the opera house were slightly dashed but it was still amazing. The sun did make enough of an appearance for us to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine in the opera bar. Then we got the ferry to Manly which was a blustery, hair ruining affair but so good to see the harbour from different angles. We didn’t spend too long in Manly as we were cold so headed back to the cityRead more
