      Salzburg and Berchtesgaden

      After seeing the forecast, I set aside a few days to see the sights and do the things in and around Salzburg. I found a campsite in close proximity to two attractions. The campsite itself had a sauna, so I was more than happy to stay a couple rainy nights in a tent there. First the salt mines tour which was a highlight, from deep salty lakes to slides in a miner’s onesy. Next was the Eagles Nest. A specially equipped bus took me up to Hitlers mansion? Fortress? Castle? At roughly 6000 feet. Well worth the trip to get some cloudy views and a glance into the past. I can only imagine what it might look like on a clear day!Read more

      Day trip to Germany!

      We took a day trip out to an underground salt mine (Berchtesgaden Salt Mine) in the alps. We ended up actually crossing into Germany! It was fascinating taking the trip 165 meters underground to see how they mined in the past and are mining currently. It was also a new experience to be the only two English speaking people in the tour of 50! We had translating devices for the produced information, but when the guide spoke he did so in German, and then would run over to us and repeat himself in English. A few times before he did that, he would say something and the whole crowd would crack up laughing - we may have been unknowingly the butt of a joke or two.

      In the evening we went up to Hohensalzburg Fortress. It was first built in 357 AD - and was altered and expanded on for hundreds of years. It also has the distinction of being a fortress that in all of history had never been conquered. Reaching it in the funicular you could see why - it was on such sheer cliffs and so high. During one battle the enemy had them pinned down for so long they almost ran out of food - they were down to a single cow. So they would paint the cow nightly different colors and parade it the next day where the enemy could see. They were fooled into thinking they had more food then they actually did, and gave up the fight and left.

      I learned today that in WW2 over 46% of Salzburg was destroyed - coming from the US where modern wars haven’t been fought on our soil it’s hard to imagine losing so much.      Read more

      Postalmstraße: Natur pur im Schnee

      Daher geht es weiter nach Salzburg, die Geburtsstadt Mozarts. Schlösser, Parks, Museen, Kirchen und Natur - die Schönheit von Salzburg liegt in ihren vielen Gesichtern.
      Da wir Salzburg aber bereits kennen, galt unser Besuch einer kleinen atmosphärischen Auffrischung um dann ein weiteres Highlight anzufahren: die Postalmstraße im Tennengau.

      Die Postalmstraße im Tennengau gehört zweifellos zu den schönsten Panoramastraßen im Salzburger Land. Die mautpflichtige, 28,5 km lange Bergstraße verbindet die Orte Abtenau im Lammertal und Strobl im Salzkammergut und erschließt das größte zusammenhängende Almgebiet Österreichs mit unvergleichlich schönen Ausblicken auf das mächtige Dachsteinmassiv und die zerklüftete Bischofsmütze.

      Im Skigebiet angekommen reißt die Wolkendecke auf und der Regen legt eine Pause ein! Grund genug für einen Spaziergang querfeldein durch die Almlandschaft, die aufgrund des vielen Regens schier aus dem Boden quatscht: überall Pfützen, Quellen, die sich aus dem Boden auftun und reißende Bäche.       40. Oberaudorf - Hallian

      First thing this morning we took Maddy out. We noticed that her movements were strange and have realised that she has had a vestibular attack. She has rapid eye movement and is struggling to walk and can barely keep her balance. She is fine in herself and still wagging as she does. After much concern, we carried on slowly along the Alpine road as Maddy needs to rest and be monitored over the next few days. The route was very scenic but we understandably struggled to enjoy it.

      We stopped at Lake Konigsee along the way and had some lunch and then crossed the border into Austria where we will be staying tonight.

      We took Maddy out again and she's got worse sadly and was sick 3 times, although still wagging all the time . We have decided to find a campsite and monitor her for the next couple of days and then decide on our next movements. If she doesn't improve, we will be heading towards home or somewhere near the port so we can get home if needed... Our poor Maddy!!      Read more

      I LOVE the mountains!

      We spent the day hiking up in the Austrian alps … took a cable car 🚠 1853 meters to the top of Untersberg Mt. It was the most extreme one I’ve been on yet. Took my breath away at times.

      Once to the top we hiked another 45 minutes to the next summit over rock trails and steps cut into the hillside. It was worth it though as it gave us a 360° panoramic view. It was absolutely stunning. There are no words to describe how beautiful this was — I cried thinking how much Rodney would have loved experiencing this.

      Once down we headed to Hellbrunn Palace & Gardens. It was built in the early 1600’s and the highlight was the “trick fountains”. The archbishop at the time had quite a sense of humor and made these fountains that would pop on at the most unlikely times and spray you as you walk thru enjoying the gardens. Pretty funny. They also house the gazebo there from the “16 going on 17” scene in the sound of music.

      Zeppezauerhaus

      Wir starten ganz gemütlich vom Mostwastl Richtung Glanegg und auch der Aufstieg zum Zeppezauerhaus beginnt recht harmlos. Wir haben uns für den Dopplersteig entschieden, also den Aufstieg, der Trittsicherheit und Schwindelfreiheit erfordert. Die ersten Stufen sind beeindruckend - bis zu 40 cm hoch, dafür nur 10 cm tief. Aber dann geht es erstmal sehr entspannt durch den Wald nach oben. Den Gipfel über dem Zeppezauerhaus können wir dann irgendwann schon sehen. Es wird steiler und die Stufen fangen wieder an. Und dann beginnt die ausgesetzte Passage durch die Dopplerwand. Die Gedenktafeln für die Abgestürzten haben wir irgendwann nicht mehr gezählt, sondern uns stattdessen gut an den Seilen festgehalten. Es war einfacher als es aussieht. Oben wartet als Belohnung das erste Gipfelkreuz auf Uns- und nach einigen weiteren Höhenmetern das urige Zeppezauerhaus, wo wir einen gemütlichen Nachmittag und Abend verbringen.Read more

      St. Wolfgang, Austria Day 44

      Another great weather day in the Austrian Lake District. I had decided yesterday to take the cog railway train to the top of the mountain right behind where I am staying. It is the steepest train 🚂 in Austria and goes up almost 6,000 feet in less than 4 miles! That is VERY steep. The station is only a couple blocks away from my home and arrived there around 11A. Train left on time and it is a 34 to 40 minute ride to the top. A spectacular ride. I had a window seat. At the top there is a hotel and several cafes. I wanted to hike a bit, and did, but it was a challenge as it is steep down and I knew I had to get back up. 😂. If I had someone else with me I would have hiked down to the middle train station , there were lots of other hikers, but common sense prevailed and I enjoyed the bit I did and then went to check out the rest on the area and, of course, have lunch.

      There are 2 pics below (12 and 13) that show the clouds coming in on a narrow ridge line with a sheer rock face. If you blow them up you can see hikers on that narrow ridge! That was NOT me. Amazing! Great lunch with Apple Strudel for desert. No need for dinner tonight.

      Back home for a “lie down” and then out for a walk along the lake before cocktail hour. Love the long days at this time of year, boaters everywhere - all kinds of water craft and lots of wildflowers. So lovely. A “get organized “ evening, leaving here tomorrow for a couple nights on another lake in Germany 🇩🇪 (8th country on this trip) on my way back to Geneva.      Read more

      gesamt 14 km

      Noch im Kurpark spricht uns ein Mitwanderer an. Er hat uns am Erkennungszeichen der Salzburg-Triest-Wanderer erkannt - rotes Band am Rucksack. Er startet erst morgen von Salzburg, aber abends werden wir ihn dann wohl auf der Hütte wiedertreffen.
      Nach einem Käffchen mit Blick auf die Salzach geht's los. Wir wandern auf den Mönchsberg und oberhalb von Salzburg in Richtung Festung Hohensalzburg. Dann geht es einige Kilometer sehr idyllisch am Almkanal entlang. Man kann dort schwimmen - aber auch das Kühlen der Füße ist prima. An der Almwelle treffen sich die Surfer - Zuschauen lohnt sich. Dann noch ein kurzes Stück bis zum Mostwastl, unserer sehr schönen Unterkunft für heute. Die ersten neun Kilometer haben wir geschafft, da sollten die restlichen 490 doch wohl auch kein Problem sein 😁.      Read more

      Wasser- und Theaterspiele

      Nachdem der vorige Abend etwas länger ging, brauchten wir am Mittwoch morgen etwas länger. Irgendwann waren wir dann aber doch bereit bei dem Regenwetter nach draußen zu stapfen. Circa 30 Minuten fuhren wir mit dem Bus nach Schloss Hellbrunn. In der ehemaligen Sommerresidenz eines Fürsterzbischofs wartete auf uns neben einem Schaumuseum vor allem ein Park mit Wasserspielen aus dem 17. Jhd. Dort würden uns in einem wunderschönen Garten und zusammen mit Statuen aus der griechischen Mythologie Wasserfontänen jeglicher Art präsentiert. Im Stile des Manierismus wurden Fontänen, mehrer Puppentheater, und sogar ein ausgeklügeltes Pfeifensystem, welches Vogelzwitschern imitieren konnte betrieben😱. Damals alles noch mit Holzrohren versehen, dienten die Spielereien hauptsächlich der Machtdemonstration. Wir waren sehr begeistert von der Feinheit der damaligen Technik und fragten eine der Mitarbeiterinnen so lange aus bis wir unsere ursprüngliche Gruppe verloren hatten🤷‍♀️ Nachdem wir ordentlich ge-audioguid-et wurden liefen wir noch ein bisschen durch den weitläufigeren Teil des Parks. Dort befand sich ein in den Hügel gehauen Steintheater bei dem scheinbar gerade eine Folge Bergdoktor/ Tatort oder ähnliches gedreht wurde. Zurück in Salzburg entschieden wir uns für ein Nachmittagspäuschen im Hostel.
      Abends waren wir erneut mit Linda verabredet im ARGE-Theater, bei dem ihr Mitbewohner mitspielte. Es war ein modernes "Mit-Mach-Stück" bei dem Schauspiel, digitale Animationen, verschiedene Instrumente und unsere Spiele einen satirischen Verschnitt einer Fernsehspielshow imitierten. Wir hatten auf jeden Fall Spaß und ließen den Abend noch entspannt zu dritt in der anliegenden Bar ausklingen😃
      Es war ein wunderschöner aber auch anstrengender Urlaub. Vor allem die Stille und Kraft der Bergpanoramen unserer Trekking-Tour werde ich vermissen. Vielleicht kehren wir ja nochmal zurück für den Rest des Salzalpensteigs. Dann aber vielleicht lieber im Sommer🤔 Jetzt sitzen wir im Zug zurück und freuen uns auf noch ein paar entspannte Tage in Rostock.      Read more
