  • Grand Turk

    April 1, 2014 in Turks and Caicos Islands ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The Grand Turk is purely a tourist trap. There's not much there other than Margartiaville and the beach, but that doesn't mean it ends there! Go past the port and out to the taxi stands. Don't buy any of the over priced ship excursions, get the real stuff! We found in a past post to ask for Mama Dea taxi services, and that is what we did. We had a fantastic tour guide, Tony! We asked another couple to join us and we worked out a great price of $25 a person for a 2 hour tour of Grand Turk. It was a really great experience to learn about the culture of the Island and to see some great places that otherwise, we would never have known. I really wanted to bring back a Conch Shell from Grand Turk, and Tony made that happen. I was so happy that we decided to listen to the advice of other travelers and go beyond the port! Upon returning to the port, we walked down the beach to Jacks bar, a local bar, where we could hang with the locals and grab a local beer. Enjoy!
    Hippie Tips:
    Try the local brew!
Check the sand for littered sea glass!

  • Maho Beach St. Marteen

    March 29, 2014 in Sint Maarten ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

The rush you feel from the airplanes is so much fun. It's more exciting than it is scary. The beach is very crowded but that is because it is very small. We grabbed a table at the Sunset Grille and made our way out to the beach when the planes came. It was quite an experience and I would definitely come here again to experience it.

    Hippie Tip:
**Be aware** If you are cruising, it will take a few hours to get back to the boat by taxi. Plan accordingly. Traffic is terrible!!
Be sure to try Guava Berry Colada

    Edinburgh, Scotland

    July 9, 2013 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I can't wait to go back. There's so much to see and do and we only saw a little piece. Amazing history surrounds this gorgeous town. And of course, we had to try the haggis. Queensferry, a town about 45 minutes away, took us out of the city and onto the water. It was just as beautiful there. Out of all of the trips we took while living in Germany, this was the only one that didn't rain. Ironic, huh?
    Hippie Tips:
Castle Rock Hostel was absolutely perfect!
Free Whisky tasting in the castle! Best Whisky I've ever had

    Amsterdam for a day

    July 7, 2013 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

It is exactly how you picture it. Bikes are extremely popular. They actually have their own lane on the road and bike parking. There are coffee shops all over where you can go inside and smoke weed, hash, eat mushrooms ect. It was pretty wild to see. The smell of pot filled the air and people walked around smoking joints. We went to the Anne Frank House and that was pretty amazing.Read more

    Lucerne

    July 4, 2013 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Our last day in Switzerland, we ventured south again to Lucerne. What a beautiful city. I wish we had spent more time here. All natural beauty. We walked around the town and eat Falafel by the water. I enjoyed every second in Lucerne. The cobblestone streets were littered with people, shops and food. I found the perfect Swatch Watch. She was great. We took the cable car up another mountain to ride the Rhodelbahn down the Alps and then we were off. This was originally what drew us to Lucerne. I wish we had spent our entire time here.
    Hippie Tips
Taste the Cheese on the bridge
Give the person in front of you time on the Rhodelbahn so you can go faster.

Take me above the Clouds, Mt. Titlis

    July 3, 2013 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We ventured south in Switzerland to Mt. Titlis in Engelberg. At 10,000 feet, there was plenty to do on top of this Mountain. We went inside a glacier, took the suspension bridge over the Alps below, went sledding down the Alps and took a ski lift over the glaciers. The cost to get up to the top of the mountain was nearly $100 per person. Ouch! As we were heading up on the first gondola, fog began to roll in a light drizzle. Eventually, the clouds broke, and there were all the mountain peaks. It was quite a site to see. Would I go to Mt. Titlis again, no. It was a site to see and you could definitely spend a day up there but I felt I was missing the culture down below.
Hippie Tips: Enjoy the river with a brew, I mean a view.

    Zurich

    July 2, 2013 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Well, this is it. Our last trip while living in Germany. Driving in the center of Zurich was crazy. C.r.a.z.y. We walked around downtown a bit and took advantage of Sandemans Free Tours. Zurich itself is a big city, but the downtown area was very cute. With banks on every corner! And incredibly expensive as they say! We happened to be in town during Zurich's largest festival, Züri Fäscht that happens every 3 years. Oops. The number of people crowding the streets was unbelievable. I knew they expected close to 20,000 guests but with no organization, that made it a little tough. Even worse, the amount for 1 beer was close to 12CHF, about 15$ and a mixed drink was 15CHF, close to 18$. The time it took to get past people and get in line to get a drink, almost wasn't worth it. Around 2230, the fireworks began. This was the first time I had ever seen a fireworks symphony, and it was pretty impressive. It was nice to see Fireworks so close to the 4th of July.
    Hippie Tip:
Travel outside of Zurich to the smaller towns

    Eagles Nest, Germany

    May 27, 2013 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 2 °C

On our way home from Austria, we stopped at The Eagles Nest, a house given as a gift to Hitler for his 50th birthday, was purely incredible to visit. Why? Why is it so amazing. I often think this having lived in Germany and learn of the great torture they truly still hold close to their heart. The history is just incredible. The Eagles Nest was built for him as a 50th birthday present but Hitler had only been there about 14 times. The house that he resided in was closer to the bottom of the Mountain but had been torn down after the war.
Cars are not allowed to drive up the winding roads to the house, so we took an amazing tour with
    Eagle’s Nest Historical Tours.
Civilians now reside in the white houses that once housed SS guards.
Once atop the mountain, we were escorted down a tunnel and into the elevator provided for Hitler made of gold and bronze. Once again, summer fell below and winter resided on top of the mountain. Completely covered with snow, overcast allowed for beautiful views but ice created some slippery conditions. Our time was cut short because the mountain had to close for the 5th time since opening just that month by a bad storm coming in that actually dropped an incredible amount of snow very quickly.

    Hippie Tip:
Hike around the area, or even all the way up to the Eagles Nest.
Take your time in the Documentation Center, it's amazing

    Eisriesenwelt, Worlds Largest Ice Cave

    May 26, 2013 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

We were slipping up to the Ice Caves. We curved in and out of the mountain on a 40 minute hike to the short cable car ride. Walking up the exactly what you would imagine. It was steep and it was tough but it was beautiful. Fog came in great layers at times, but once cleared, it was worth the wait. We stopped at the little restaurant, Wimmerhutte at the top of the first hike for some carbs and of course, some beer.
By the time we finally reached the top of the mountain, summer became winter. Inside the caves, it was cold and it was dark. Every 4th person gets a lantern and it's just enough light to see the stairs. We had 1400 stairs to climb during our time at the caves, 700 up and 700 down. The guide only used magnesium strips to light the caves so you could see them. No flash photography was allowed inside the cave. It was kept in it's natural condition. The tour took about an hour.
    Hippie Tips:
Take a break and get a snack at the Wimmerhutte.
Breathe in the fresh air, take in the surroundings, love the Alps. Stop and look around on your hike

    Hallein Austria, Salt Mines

    May 25, 2013 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

We decided to hit the Salt mines in Hallein, not to be confused with the ones in Hallstat. We had to get dressed into special outfits to keep our clothes from getting damaged on the slide and the salt. The Salt Mine was kept natural. We took a small train made up of a single board with foot rests, something that would never happen in the US. It makes you almost feel like a rebel! During the walking portion of the tour, you actually cross the line between Germany and Austria. You're in 2 places at once! A boat ride is included in this large underground lake. It's almost eerie but really neat to witness. We were able to taste the brine that was dripping from the pipes made of 27% salt. SALTY!
    Hippie Tips:
Take time to visit the local towns near the caves. Wish we had!
Lick the salt wall! Make sure it's real Salt :)
