      Another Beautiful Day

      Yesterday's walk of Shakespeare Cliff ended without incident. I made my way back into Whitianga to Master Kebab, the Turkish shop with excellent lamb kebobs. Yummy! Then, since my feet were beginning to hurt, I went back to the hostel, where I spent the rest of the evening. Great day!

      Today dawned without a cloud in the sky. I packed and made my way across the ferry one last time, then I took a shuttle to Hahei Holiday Resort, where I'll spend one last night in the area. Whitianga and Hahei have been great places to chill out and kick back on the beach, but it's time to head inland for a while.

      Right now, I'm grabbing a burger at the local ice cream shop before checking in. I hope it's good!

      Hahei - Cathedral Cove

      Na een heerlijk zonnig ontbijtje op ons terras steigen we weer in de auto. We rijden richting Hahei, een klein stadje aan de kust hier niet ver vandaan. Hier is ook het startpunt van prachtige wandelroute langs de steile kust naar de Cathedral Cove. Onderweg fantastische uitzichtspunten over de zee en de vele kleine eilandjes. Het pad is met stukken erg steil, maar in iets meer als een uur hebben we ons doel bereikt. Het is een verborgen baai met een bogenvormige rotsdoorgang, een begeerd punt voor de toeristen en dat is te zien ook. We blijven een poosje aan het strand en schieten vele mooie foto’s van de kalkstenen kustlijn, de rotsen in de zee en een kleine waterval. Op de terugweg lopen we nog naar een klein strandje in een andere baai waar het niet to vol is. Hier blijven we nog nog een poosje en ik maak nog ee heerlijke duik in het blauwe water. Dik 5 uur zijn we weer terug bij de auto en rijden verder naar Cook’s beach. Vanaf een uitzichtspunt op de rots heeft men een goed uitzicht op de baai waar kapitein Cook in 1769 aan land gekomen is. In het 19e jh hebben hier vele schepen aangelegd, en één daarvan is gezonken tijdens een storm. Blijkbaar kan men de resten bij laag water uit de lucht nog zien. Tot slot rijden we nog naar het Hot Water Beach. Daar kan je bij eb (2 uur ervoor tot 2 uur erna) met een spade een gat graven en daarmee je eigen warmwaterpool maken. Hete waterbronnen diep in de grond maken dit mogelijk. Aangezien het al laat in de middag is en fris, graven we niet zelf maar springen in een gat wat door anderen gegraven is… lekker makkelijk ;0) En inderdaad, het water is warm en als je je tenen er diep insteekt is het zelfs heet. Als we teruglopen naar de auto merken we hoe warm/heet het zand op bepaalde plekken is, vreemde ervaring. We halen nog Fish & Chips op de nagelegen camping, zoeken een bankje op aan het strand en genieten de zonsondergang.Read more

      Hahei

      So.. for those of you who have been waiting with baited breath and thinking “where are they!?!”.. well we are not in Hahei! But we were.. a couple of weeks ago.

      Briefly I have learnt here in New Zealand that the WiFi and phone signal are naff but otherwise the place is blooming gorgeous!

      I must I’m afraid miss chunks out but I’ll start with Hahei, which is an immaculate sandy beach on the Coromandel Peninsula.

      We drove almost directly here from Auckland, where our overnight stay was fun catching up with and meeting some new Auckland based friends. The drive was windy and incredibly scenic.

      On arrival we kayaked with Brad - our instructor/barista - and some other couples around to Cathedral Cove. It’s a bay where there is a stunning natural arch. Where we stopped for cappuccinos and cookies.

      The sun was shining, the sea was fresh and my arms felt like they were going to fall off. We learnt about the marine reserve and the first discoverers to NZ and revelled in the stunning scenery.

      Tired out we managed the nearest campsite which was beachside and from our camper we could hear the sea as we fell asleep.      Read more

      Hello New Zealand!

      When I left you we were at Rarotonga airport awaiting our flight to Auckland, we had five hours to wait and were considering our options on how best to spend the time but the weather intervened and made our decision for us - it rained heavily and continuously so we stayed at the airport with our friends from Frankfurt whom we met on the lagoon cruise on Thursday who were also going to Auckland. They had travelled since the beginning of September through most of the South Pacific islands and now on to NZ and were not returning to Germany until January.
      Anyhow the four hour flight to Auckland was uneventful and getting through customs was fine though they are very hot on the walking boots and golf shoes you are bringing into the country, are they clean, what type of terrain have you been walking on.
      Our hotel for the night was immediately opposite the terminal which was very welcome so we checked in, shared a pizza and were early to bed.
      Woke up early (6am) as we have been prone to do on this trip, had a good breakfast and picked up our hire car which is a brand new Toyota RAV4. Our first venture was to find an electrical shop for we had left the charger for our electric toothbrush at home but no joy so we set off for the Corromandel Peninsula which is east of Auckland. It was a lovely drive hugging the coast for much of the way and then up into the hills with roads zigzagging up and down and amazing views. Stopped for lunch at Corramendel and booked a trip on the Driving Creek Railway nearby. This is a private railway built over a number of years by a local man that takes you up to the top of a hill with great views over the hills to the coast. There were only nine of us on the train, New Zealanders, South Africans and us so comment was passed about the World Cup.
      We are staying tonight in an excellent B&B in Hahei and have dinner in the local pub The Pour House where the local beer was on offer and excellent it was too!
      Driving in NZ is very easy, the roads are well maintained and are SO quiet. The people are so very friendly wherever we have been so far, interested in where we have been and where we’re going. A great country that we are very impressed with.      Read more

      Per Autostop nach Hahei

      Gestern Abend habe ich im Hostel Amelie kennen gelernt. Nach einer Weile stellte sich heraus, dass sie auch mal eine Velotour machen wollte, nun aber per Autostop durch NZ reist. Da sie heute auch nach Hahei wollte sagte ich ohne gross nachzudenken: nimm mein Velo, ich nehme dein Rucksack und wir treffen uns in Hahei! Zu meiner Überraschung meinte sie nur: Klar!

      Gesagt getan: Heute Morgen habe ich all mein Zeug aufs Velo geladen und Amelie machte sich damit auf den Weg. Weil Autostop natürlich schneller ist konnte ich zuerst noch mit Daniel eine Runde surfen gehen. Danach machte ich mich auf den Weg. War echt lustig, ich wurde von 5 verschiedenen Leuten aufgesammelt und einer hielt sogar unterwegs extra an, um mir einen Sack Pfirsiche zu kaufen!

      Wir sind dann praktisch zeitgleich in Hahei angekommenund haben uns gleich auf den Weg zum Hot water beach gemacht. Das ist ein Strand, an dem man sich sein eigenes Jacuzzi buddeln kann, da direkt darunter eine heisse Quelle ist. Es waren zwar saumässig viele Leute dort, lustig war es aber trotzdem!       My personal Narnia scene

      Heute ging es endlich mit einen großen Tourbus aus unsere Reise in Richtung Süden zur Coromandel Peninsula. Unser Guide ist nun Gollum..Und der Name ist auch ein wenig Programm..Aber das wird schon 😅.
      Kein Grund für schlechte Stimmung gab es dann nämlich bei unsrer Beachside Unterkunft, kleine Häuschen, ansonsten war alles im Freien verstreut, ich liiiebe sowas 😊. Bei wundervollem Wetter gingen wir dann auf eine 3h Kajak-Tour zur Cathedral Cove, dem Drehort einer berühmten Filmszene aus Narnia. Unser Guide Brad - ein wahrer Beachboy 😉 - führte uns aber zunächst für etwa zwei Stunden um die einzelnen Inseln, durch eine Cove und Felsvorsprünge hindurch, bis wir am Traumstand mit klarem, grünen Wasser und weißem Sand für einen frisch zubereiteten Cappuccino Pause machten. Es fühlte sich etwas unwirklich an sich in so einer Kulisse von den Wellen tragen zu lassen, aber Valerie machte mir zu liebe genug Erinnerungsfotos 👍.
      Danach ging es direkt weiter zum Hot Water Beach: Vulkanaktivität ermöglicht es, dass sich beim Graben eines Loches im Sand dieses mit heißem, ja wirklich thermal heißem Wasser füllt. Genau das richtige nach einem kurzen Dive im Meer 😊.

      Am Abend gab es ein leckeres BBQ in unsrer Unterkunft und mit ein bisschen Wein intus machten wir uns gemeinsam mit den anderen Reisenden einen gemütlichen Abend mit einem nächtlichen Strandspaziergang bei sternenklarem Himmel 😍.

      Kurz nach Mitternacht ging es dann ins Bett, der Wecker war nämlich bereits für 4:20 Uhr gestellt, um den Sonnenaufgang an der Cathedral Cove erleben zu können.

      Jour 7 : Hahei nz

      Kia Ora,

      Nous quittons aujourd'hui notre station balnéaire Paihia, j'ai beaucoup aimé ce coin de pays, imaginez s'il avait fait beau mur à mur. Nous faisons une longue route aujourd'hui soit 5 heures pour aller dans la péninsule Coromandel,à Hahei. Des routes sinueuses vous connaissez, il y en a plein ici, la limite a beau être 100 km/h, c'est difficile d'aller plus vite que 30-40 km/h. Comme Julie n'est pas habituée d'être assise de se côté de la voiture, combiné aux routes qui zigzaguent, elle a souvent des émotions! 😧😲😬 😩La conduite néo-zélandaise continue de bien aller mais je mélange encore un peu le bras des clignotants et celui des essuie-glace car oui ça aussi c'est à l'inverse. C'est pas parce qu'on change de coin de pays que la température change, et oui il a plu une bonne partie de la route.

      Je vous disais que Russel était grand comme deux mains, Hahei, c'est plutôt une demie main, tout se trouve sur le même terrain ou presque, notre backpacker lodge, le café, la micro- brasserie et quelque gugus... on est venu ici pour deux points d'intérêt soit la Hot Water Beach et Cathedral Cove. On a fait le premier en fin de journée car idéalement il faut y aller à la marée basse sinon c'est une plage normale. Il y a un phénomène qui se produit à la marée basse, le sable devient très chaud, en creusant un peu, tu as ton propre spa naturel. On a rencontré deux jeunes Français et on a fait notre trou avec eux mais on n'était pas dans le bon spot, on avait une eau chaude mais pas bouillante. En quittant la plage, on a marché sur le spot ultra chaud, impossible d'y rester, c'est vraiment vraiment chaud. Ha oui, on a réussi à aller sur la plage entre deux ondés de pluie.

      On a terminé la soirée à la micro-brasserie, bonne bière et bonne bouffe, c'était notre journée record de français car on a rencontré deux filles qui y travaillaient. En fin de compte il y a beaucoup de français qui quittent le pays pour travailler ailleurs et la NZ c'est facile d'avoir le permis. Demain matin, on fera le cathedral cove avant d'aller passer quelques jours chez Silvia à Hamilton.

      Hahei - Cathedral Cove & Hot Water Beach

      Beim nächsten Stop im Hahei kommen wir für 2 Tage in top modernen Hütten auf einem Campingplatz direkt am Strand unter. Von hier aus starten wir ziemlich direkt die kleine Wanderung zu Cathedral Cove, einem schönen Felsgebilde direkt am Strand, leider nur sehr überlaufen von weiteren Touris.
      Das war aber nur das Aufwärmtraining für den völlig überlaufenen Hotwater Beach, zu dem es am nächsten Tag ging. Hier gräbt man, bewaffnet mit Schaufeln, an der richtigen Stellen ein Loch und kann dann zusehen wie sich dieses mit teilweise fast kochendheissem Wasser füllt, bevor man sich dann in den selbstgebaute Pool setzt. 😊
      Hier die richtige Temperatur zu finden ist echt eine Kunst. Da werden schnell sogar die Erwachsenen wieder zu kleinen Kindern im Sandkasten. Unheimlich lustig anzuschauen!! Da macht es dann auch nichts, dass es so viele Menschen auf einem Haufen sind. 😂      Read more

      Driving Creek Railway and Cathedral Cove

      Unsere erste freedom camping ⛺️ Nacht haben wir gut 😊 verbracht, hatten morgens einen tollen Blick aufs Meer und sind direkt mit guter Laune in den Tag gestartet.

      Wir hatten viel vor und sind weiter die Küstenlinie der Coromandel Halbinsel hoch gefahren, eine Kurve nach der anderen und immer ein toller Blick aufs Meer 🌊. Für 10:15 Uhr hatten wir uns kurzfristig Tickets für die "Driving Creek Railway" gebucht und machten unseren ersten Stopp für heute in Coromandel Town.

      Ein Töpfer Kunsthandwerker hat sich eine 2,6 km lange Eisenbahn 🚂in der Berg gebaut und das fast überwiegend in Handarbeit. Eine witzige Touristenattraktion und auf der Bergstation gab es einen erneut gigantischen Ausblick auf die Küste mit ihren kleinen vorgelagerten Inseln. 👍

      Weiter ging es dann erneut Serpentinen den Berg hinauf und wieder herunter, um auf die andere Seite der Halbinsel zu gelangen. Hier war dann unser zweiter Stopp für heute, die "Cathedral Cove". Da wir zeitlich doch etwas spät für die 1,5 stündige Wanderung waren, entschieden wir uns das Wassertaxi 💦zu nehmen. So hatten wir noch genügend Zeit die Felsformationen, welche eine Höhle geformt hatten, anzusehen und anschließend ein wenig in der Sonne ☀️ im Sand zu relaxen. 😎      Read more
