      Day 33 Ribadiso

Feeling under pressure for time - I want to arrive in Santiago on Thursday and have a couple of days to rest and enjoy the city before setting off with Luca again at the weekend - and rather threatened at the prospect of therefore having to walk up to 30km a day feeling as weary as I was yesterday, I skipped a day's worth of walking by taking a bus. Happy cheat! It's only me (...and petty, competitive people, you know) who take any interest in the 'purist' completion of the Camino: the unspoken rules of the road include always carrying your own bag, never taking public transport, going completely offline even for finding the way, not taking any days off. Now I have broken them all, hooray! (I call it 'grace'!)

Hilariously, I missed the intended bus stop and had to wait for another bus to go back 20 minutes so I could start at my intended town at 4-doable-days' distance. We pilgrims' collect 'stamps' at every overnight stay and often in restaurants, cafes and churches, did you know? It is part of the Camino culture that every sleepery and eatery has its own logo, so the collection serves as proof of where we have been; at the end, in the Santiago pilgrims' office, the well-stamped 'Credential' enables us to receive the 'Compostela', a rather super certificate of completion. In the last 100km we have to have at least 2 stamps a day over the distance we have walked; that was why I needed to go back and not just double-cheat!

I managed then to walk over 25km, feeling bright and perky all day ... perhaps I needn't have taken the short cut after all! It was pretty flat terrain today, and the weather was mostly dry and even a little sunny, which of course makes every step feel a little lighter.

Lugo city centre was much nicer empty and in the bright morning sun than yesterday, when it was full of TOURISTS (those pesky people!), noisy and busy. The other photo subjects just took my eye. The more the days and the distance pass, the less I'm interested in the landscape, it seems. Perhaps it just seems to be 'normal' now; I wonder if I will regret in future taking so few pictures. But I still found several new flowers today! The number of flowers I have identified has is nearing 200: YES IT'S TRUE!

Ginny and Martin, Orlando. Jenny, Islington. 2 couples from Boston. Dora, Hanover. Laurence, Sandwich.

It's so good to be here

      Boadilla

      20 Mayıs, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

      Day 18 Boadilla
Distance from Castrojeriz to Boadilla 20kms

Started the day with a steep climb out of the village up to 1050m and back onto the Meseta. The view back over the valley was worth the climb the landscape today was much the same as yesterday. We crossed over into the Province of Palencia and with few trees to offer shade we were fortunate the day was warm and mostly cloudy. Hobbit like dwellings built into the hillsides and the farm track we walked on took us over a Roman Bridge and into Boadilla. Here we caught up with Camino friends we’ve made along the way and whom we haven’t seen for days. Surprising how we come together at different times and places.
Listening to our bodies we took a rest this afternoon at our lovely albergue. Another set of storks are busy with their young family on top of the building outside our dorm window. Fascinating to watch.

D6 - Pamplona to Puente la Reina

      19 Mayıs, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Leaving Pamplona we could see the wind turbines in the distance that we were heading for. We stopped for a coffee just a few kms out from Pamplona at Cizur Menor. The trail up the mountain was long, muddy in parts but the wild flowers were beautiful. We seemed to climb forever up Alto de Perdon , so steep in places that bike riders were having trouble pushing their bikes up. At the top of Alto de Perdon we posed for photos at the iconic pilgrims monument - a steel sculpture of pilgrims through the ages. The peak can be quite windy at times, however the huge wind turbines that surrounded us were barely moving. After a quick rest and drink off we went on our descent which was very rocky and very steep but not as slippery as previous days. We passed through the small villages of Uterga, Muruzabal and Obanos then onto Puente La Reina (queens bridge) we walked through town admiring the beautiful buildings and ancient churches and just when we think we have arrived at our accommodation we walked over the bridge to find that our albergue was at the top of a long steep and massive driveway. We ended up having the pilgrims meal in the albergue that night as none of us were keen to do the hill climb again.

      Day 14 to Castrojeriz

      20 Mayıs, Ispanya ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Easy day... apart from starting (again) without coffee!

Luckily at about 9km's at Castellanos de Castro I got great coffee and pancakes with peanut butter. Bed huskies- Oasis - sat at my feet. And played with a littkitten, India.

The church ruin of San Anton is incredible! And they have a small albergue there...

My watch died... but feels like I walked about 15km's but must be at least 19 to 20...
Can still feel my leg but I'm either getting used to it or it's getting better.

Saw Monique, Herman (from Holland), Matteo(UK), Ken, Alyssa & brother (Toronto) on the road.

Forgot to mention the little buck that came from nowhere and ran next to me for a (short) while before he disappeared in the thick grass

Also Hans, who looks like he is suffering but he keeps going.

Nice municipal aulberge tonight... colourful & friendly.

Korean couple, old lady with sore knee, Tom, Mateo & girl who I saw long ago- also with injured knee - all here

      Day 24 Gonzar - Melide

      20 Mayıs, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      31.5 km (715 km from the start). 5h 56min on the Road. 39.000 steps. 2095 calories. 5.9 km/h

Last night hostel was great. Didn’t expect that as village is 39 inhabitants big 😂 Great room, huge pilgrim menu and best of everything - breakfast with eggs and bacon. Waited until 07:30am to get that breakfast and it was absolutely worth it.

Long stage today - considering I have been walking for 24 days now. 618m ascent and 707 descent - quite challenging when I am walking so much.

So many people on the trail - no backpacks, no dirty clothes. Spain has entered the Camino and this, what they are doing, is no challenge at all. It is walk in the park but if this is going to grant them shortcut to heaven 😂😂 - fine with me.

Staying in Melide - big city considering where I have been staying until now. Is it pizza day today? I am not talking about microwave heated supermarket pizza - I want a real deal 😂

Only 55 km to go - and only 2 days left. I am ready to get back to civilization - first acclimatizing in Porto - then returning to “civilian” life in Copenhagen 🥰

We have a plan - Obanos

      17 Mayıs, Ispanya ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We moved on from Pamplona and headed to Obanos..

The path was very populated at the beginning of the morning and day.

We reached the top standing next to humongous wind turbines and the state of the Pilgrim. We celebrated with smiles enjoyed conversation with others from all around the world . It was also very emotional.

We decided to stay in Obanos. It was a lovely Pension’ run by an elderly couple. They were sweet, firm and very hospitable. They made us dinner in their home and we sat at their dinning room table.

The couple cooked I t he kitchen for us and pour us some wine. Maria & Pedro. We’re so lovely and humorous. 💜

Amy made it fun with Spanish- English chit chat with the couple. I sat and listened picking up a few Spanish worlds here and there.

Maria said she had done the Camino a couple times and it’s very heavy. Shared some stories.

Maria and Pedro pool looked luscious - and it’s was cold 🥶. I plugged my whole body into it. My knees and hips were killing me. The cold pool provided relief! Yay!!

      Next morning….

Off to Villatuerta - We had a plan the next morning to pack our day pack as light as possible and send the rest with luggage transport. We heard the trail was less intense and so we wanted to go light. Have an “easy” day!🤣🤣🤣

However luggage transport arrived 30 minutes early and wasn’t going to wait for us. We packed in a chaotic state. Cramming anything and everything in our luggage nit wanting to carry it.

We did the best we could under pressure AND when all was said and done we had way too much to carry that day. It was weird irony that we had gotten the lesson on packing light and was prepared to do so and then the Camino said one more day you can walk with your crap on your back ! 🤣

We had a few stops on our way to Villatuerta. One town we arrived in had a small church where I went to go visit and pray and meditate. They had a pilgrim meditation. It moved me very much. And……. I cried! 🤣🙌💜. I met a woman from Scotland that started talking about letting go very interesting conversation and I/we met a guy named Fred from the Netherlands. He is kind and caring.

D5 - rest day in Pamplona

      18 Mayıs, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Rest day today, although we still did a fair bit of walking. We found a place just about 1.5km from city centre of Pamplona. Had a sleep in this morning then walked into town and had some coffee in a little cafe in the square. We then made our way to line up to get into the municipal hostel for 11 euros each. Dumped out packs on our beds then out to explore the town. We went to the Pamplona cathedral and had a look around inside, the photos don’t do it justice. The architecture is just amazing. We wandered around town taking in all the beautiful buildings, narrow streets and alleyways. We met up with Chris and Kate for a few wines and pinchos, very delicious. While we were wandering around we watched some of the cyclists and runners that were competing in a triathlon. There was lots of activity going on, bands playing in the street, groups of people sitting around on the ground enjoying each others company and lots of little bars with people coming and going.Okumaya devam et

      Last day in Spain

      19 Mayıs, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We have had a fantastic last day, but now we are sitting at the airport, flight delayed by 45 minutes, so will write up now and try and remember what we did. Tonight we fly to Paris and stay at a CDG airport hotel for 2 nights, and begin the voyage home on Tuesday, arriving in SYD on Wednesday. So tomorrow we have a last Paris day!

So this morning we first went to the best pastry shop, La Mallorquina, in Sol, and had THE best pastry, then off to THE best churros place, and had fresh OJ, churros, chocolate (the thick dipping sort) and coffee! So a very satisfying start. The Spanish pastries had not been up to scratch, but today redeemed them. Then we went back to the hotel to pack our bags, and leave there for the afternoon, as we had to check out of the room.

Then we were free, and walked quite a lot. First to the Plaza de España where we sat down and had a little kindle read…always lots happening there. Today was a Ukrainian gathering…not a noisy protest as such, but they were singing what sounded like a national anthem…then as we were leaving we had to wait while a procession of vintage cars (20s and 30s Amr says) drove past, with vintage people, and honking their horns. Then we walked back up the Gran Via which for some unknown reason was closed to cars - normal later when we were there - maybe some important person was going to drive through…anyway, all very pleasant, lots of people enjoying Sunday morning…we walked down to the beautiful boulevards with a central park near the museums, then back and went for some lunch at the crazy and busy bar we were at last night.

We picked just the right time, as we got seats outside in the shade, on stools beside a barrel, perfect view of the whole scene. So we ordered the wonderful prawns in garlic oil we’d seen being cooked last night (I think everyone was having them, they are so delicious) and we had a last serve of perfectly cooked chiperones a la plancha. As crazy as ever - so many people piling into the small inside bar that we thought it must lead to a secret dining room, but no, they were all squeezed in standing and eating and drinking!

Then we went back to Sol and sat and read…need to finish the book reading book…then bought some mandarins and mineral water (necessities for Amr!) and picked up bags and made our way to the airport. Very easy and efficient by metro, and here we are at the gate with extra time on our hands, so will post this using the airport wifi.
