2€ half empty beer... Good price

    7 Juli 2016, Spanyol ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

So we got up around 9am to get ready to do the hop on, hop off bus in Barcelona. Before we headed over to the main stop, we of course stopped to pick up some fresh juices & fruit again (sooooo good).

We went over to the station & got our tickets that were good for both lines. Sitting on the top floor in the beating sun, we started our adventure. The morning we got to see all the different beaches in barcelona, the olympic stadium, the world trade center, and the sagrada familia. We wanted to go into the sagrada familia but they had no physical tickets left, we looked online but they only had tickets for 6:30. So we spent some time sitting outside enjoying the view of the building and all the detailed work. & Fun fact the Sagrada Familia is still not completed & they are still working on it. After getting back on the bus, we saw a few more sights & went back to city center for lunch.

We met one of our australian roomates that we had all the way back in Ireland for lunch. She is traveling for 9 months across the EU, Africa, Canada, US, mexico, and back up the us where she will celebrate her 21st birthday in Vegas. We obviosuly convienced her to add Montreal to her trip since shell already be in canada.

After lunch, we headed back on to the hop on hop off bus to do the other side of the city. Ps. Barcelona is HUGE. We went to Camp Nou Stadium but it was unfortunetly already closed so we decided we'd go back tomorrow. We went to the top of Tibidabo to get a beautiful panoramic view of barcelona.

We went back to our place to get our bathing suits on to go to the beach to cool off. We ended up buying a bottle of wine & I bought my beach blanket that ive had my eye on since we got there. We wanted to take it easy because we knew we were going to travel the next day. So after breanna & I finishing the bottle of wine within 20 minutes, I ventured to go find more beer. Another 2 beer later, we got kicked off the beach just so that they can clean. We met 3 lovely girls from England & invited them to sit with us.

Let me tell you, this blanket was magical. At some point during the night.... Dont ask me when, cause i have no idea. There were about 25 people around this blanket from all over Europe. (England, france, ireland, oh & also some russians)

We swam in the ocean, drank beer & listened to music until 5:30 am (we tried to make it to sunrise...)

The best part about this night, some guy bought all the beer for everyone. There is venders on the beach who will sell you beer for 1€ each... Which is a good price... But when they walk buy every 2 minutes... Not such a good deal. The only way to get rid of them is to try to sell the beer they just sold you back to them, already open, for double the price.

After stumbling home at 5:30, we made it safe to our place which felt like 500000000000 degrees & slept for 4 hours.... Alllll because we wanted to have a relaxing bottle of wine on the beach.

    Heat stroke or hangover?

    8 Juli 2016, Spanyol ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

We woke up for check out & obviously I left my packing for the morning. When I woke up, I was instantly going to pass out. As if the room wasnt small and hot enough, we had to add hangover to the mix. Trying to pack was the worst things in the world. I couldnt forcus for more than 30 seconds. It took me probably an hour to pack my stuff & thats if I didnt leave anything behind.

As soon as we were done packing, we went outside to sit in the shade to figure out what we were going to do with our bags until our bus ride later that night. We decided to bring them straight over to the bus stations via metro. Let me tell you... What a horrible effing decison. We 300% almost passed out in the metro because of the heat. All I wanted was water. According to Breanna, I was looking green.

After leaving our bags, we took a bus to the Camp Nou stadium to do the tour. It was such an awesome feeling to have my feet basically on the feild of the biggest stadium in europe. I wish it could have been game night to experience what it feels like to have that place packed with die hard fans. We got to see the locker rooms, press conference rooms, VIP lounges, commentary booths, & so much more. It made me miss my team back home (who currently just took first place in our division 🎉).

We did the museum part, where we got to see some unique things from Messi's career & a bunch of trophys theyve won over the years.

As Canadians, it is our duty to find any hockey rink if were near by. We found one in spain..... What what. 🙌🏼
It also felt so good because my body was so over heated from being in the sun all day yesterday& today. The cold air probably put my body into shock & I actually ended up walking to the garbage & puked my guts out... Dont worry, it was super low key thanks to my body guards. I felt better but still had a massive head ache & would get increasingly worse as soon as sun would hit my body. Could have been hangover, heat stoke or dehydration.. Who knows.

We went back to the beach to do some last minute shopping along the board walk & just sat & chilled for a little bit enjoying our last few moments in Barcelona.

We took the bus over to the bus station where we got our bus no problem. We get on, take our seats & then I realize I needed to pee sooo I get up to go to the bathroom & the bus driver comes over, starts yelling at me in spanish & slams the door in my face. I just remembering looking up at Shaunessa & going ... What? Some nice girl translated & said I couldnt go to the bathroom while the bus was stop,.. Wtf right?

Anyways 7 hours later... We arrive in Mardid 😎

    Blind in one eye

    8 Juli 2016, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

This morning after navigating to our airbnb like locals, we arrived at our hosts house, Keri. Let me tell you, she is the most welcoming, most friendly & the funniest person ever.

After our experince in Barcelona, we were so happy to be here. I hadnt showered since Brussels because the shower in Barcelona was just a platform & there was no place to put the shower head & when you did shower, the WHOLE bathroom would be soaken wet.

We instantly felt at home. We did some laundry, took a shower & most importantly took a nap. In the early afternoon, we went to the grocery store to get something to make for dinner & some elecrolytes for me because I still wasnt feeling well. We grabbed some fresh veggies & fruits & made tacos & salad. It was seriously the best meal ive had in a while.

We decided to spend the night in just totally relaxing & hanging out with our host. We will start the adventure tomorrow morning.

Im also feeling much better 🎉

    Good night yall xoxo

    Both my eyes are drunk

    10 Juli 2016, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

So we finally decided to venture out today. We headed to city center by metro (about a 15 minute ride). Where we did a "3 hour" self-guided walking tour. It took us about half that time. We call it European time because everyone things it takes alot longer than it does.

We began at the statue of the Bear and Tree Strawberry monument which led to a street that house the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The architecture around here was stunning! Next stop was the Cibeles Fountain and the Cibeles Palace, where we went in to explore for a bit and take in the history. A little further along was the Gate of Puerta de Alcalá - an archway commissioned by King Charles IV to commemorate the many battles waged by Madrid to keep control of the city.

Afterward, we wandered through El Retiro Park where there were ample opportunities to take some awesome pictures. We stopped by a lake with some gigantic statues surrounding it where people were rowing and enjoying the warm day, and stumbled upon the Glass Palace (which is exactly what it sounds like). Near the glass palace was a pond that was absolutely filled with turtles and black swans.... That's right. Black swans. We sat and watched our animal friend for a bit before we ventured further into the park. Next stop was the fountain of the Fallen Angel (another photo op) and walked out of the park to continue our tour.

Next up, we strolled around the Literary Quarter and Museum Quarter which were full of book shops and - you guessed it - museums.

After the walking tour we decided to grab some lunch at this restaurant that had pasta, fries & sangria for 6.90€. Amazing right!? No, wrong. The food was microwaved... But honestly, we didn't even care cause we were so hungry. It wasn't the worst food I've had.

We got on the metro to head back to our host's house to get ready to go out. We ended up just hanging out for a bit & watching a movie. Breanna obviously took a nap. Nap Queen. Shaunessa & I ate tons of fresh salad we made & watched Step Brothers.

We got ready and went back into the city around 10:30 pm with our host Keri. She took us to a pre-drink bar.. Because the real bars don't open until 12. There we had one of Madrid's known drinks... Beer mixed with lemon Fanta. SOOOO good.

We left the bar after our drink to grab a "street beer" (only 1€ *in Spanish accent) where we sat with all the locals and drank our beer.

We then ran into someone Keri knows & ended up going with him to this rock & roll ish bar/club where we stayed the rest of the night.

So this was a super local bar. Barely anyone spoke English. Whenever someone would speak to us, we would just point to Keri. Because of the humor we have, we obviously used this to our advantage. When people would try to talk to us in English, we pretended that we would only speak french. Later during the night, I started pretending I was deaf. We also taught some people in the bar sign language.

We left around 3:30 to go get some pizza & headed home, where we got to bed around 4.

    Cheeseburger

    12 Juli 2016, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We woke up late after the night out. We all showered and went back to city center to finish our other self guided tour.

We started in the Puerta Del Sol square where we saw the Clock of Casa de Correos (which rings in the new year) before heading up the famous Calle Arenal Streeet. On this street, we ate at the San Ginés Chocolate Bar next to the Monastery San Ginés - they serve quite literally the BEST CHOCOLATE CON CHURROS I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. NO LIE. if you are ever in Madrid... Go here.

After eating as much chocolate as we could manage (ie. A lot) we wandered past a few places great for photo ops. There was the Monastery of the Incarceration, Plaza de Oriente behind the Royal Opera House and the Royal Palace and Gardens. Afterwards came the La Almudena Cathedral, which was closed today, and the Plaza de la Villa square, which wasn't. We then stumbled into the Church of San Miguel (which was super creepy) before ending at the Plaza Mayor square, which housed fat superman.

We met our Australian friend for a late dinner. I ordered pesto salad & it was probably the best food I've eaten so far haha. We are looking forward to seeing phoebe again when she comes to Montreal at the end of September.

We went back to Keri's where we just hung out, ate food & watched some TV because we had an early flight to catch the next morning.

Breanna & I ended up staying up until 4:00am because I was trying to like all her pictures on instagram (until it locked me out). I now know her whole family, & what she got for Christmas every year since 2013.

I didn't even end up sleeping because it was TOOOOO hot.

    Força Portugal

    12 Juli 2016, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Up at 5:00 am to catch our flight to Porto. Probably one of the best flights ever. It was only an hour and 15 minutes but felt like 5 minutes (mostly because we slept)

We arrived in Porto with no complications. We called an über to take us to our beach house and was picked up by Carlos. During the 20 minute drive to our air bnb, we learned about his time as an über driver, where he used to work, and he gave us plenty of advice for our stay! He also taught us how to say beer (cerveça) and wine (vino) - very important!

We arrived & were greeted by our hosts who have the condo directly beside us. This place is amazing. The whole place is basically made out of marble & the best thing about it: AC!! Were a 5 minute walk from the beach..the Atlantic ocean & a 15 minute walk to the train station. Perfect location.

Our host explained to us about everything in the condo. She also stayed with us & gave us a huge list of things to do while in Porto and Gaia. We lucked out again.

We got changed & headed to the city to walk around & of coarse for the football game.

We were instantly amazing by the view of Porto. Simply gorgeous. We hit up a couple souvenir stores & did a little tour around the city until we stumbled upon the square where they had 3 giant screens set up for all of Porto to watch the game. We all bought Portugal flags & got face painted by some random women. People were already started to get their spots at 4pm so obviously we had to do the same. We sat in the sun for 4 hours until the game started. There were over 25000 people in the square watching the game. We were surrounded by locals, cheering in Portuguese. One of the coolest experiences ever #cultured

Of coarse Portugal won the cup. We hung out for a while after & celebrated with them as they claimed the Euro cup 2016 for the first time in 16 years. We were standing beside an older man who started crying when they won. It was the most touching thing ever. I almost cried haha.

I streets were packed with people parading with pride. We grabbed & drink & walked like sardines with thousands of people.

When we finally decided to go back, we caught the train. (Also filled with fans)

    I have 2 macbooks

    13 Juli 2016, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Day 2 in Portugal & we absoutely are in love. We went to city center & we werent sure what exactly we wanted to do. We went into the tourist office & got a package deal for an hour boat cruise to see 5 bridges in Porto, a tour of a wine cave with 2 wine tastings & entrance to a museum where we also had a wine tasting.

First up, we took a boat tour of the Duoro River that connects to the Atlantic Ocean and separates Gaia from Porto City. The river is famous for its 5 huge bridges crossing it built by 5 architects. Honestly the tour was just relaxing and we got to see a complete view of the city! There were these men on the boat who sat near us from Manchester... Let's just say I know they are all doctors and they make a lot of money. Because they kept saying it. To each other. I'm pretty sure my eyes rolled out of my head and Breanna's weren't far behind.

We got off the boat to walk from Porto side to Giuia side for our wine tour. The only open spot in English was at 3 o'clock. Soooo we opted for the french tour. We had some extra time so we went to a cafe on the river, did some pre-wine tasting & ate a Pastel De Nata.

During our tour at Calem, I actually learnt so much about wine making & how the different types of porto are different colors (ruby, tawny, rosé & white). The wine was so good that bre & I might have left with the glasses.

After the tour we went to the museum, where we read & learned nothing except how to drink more wine. We were in and out in 5 minutes.

We walked up -- yes UP is an understatement. We hiked up to Taylor's wine cave so I could get a picture.

We continued to walk UP to go to a mall. It was so worth it. We ended up getting starbucks & hanging out there for a bit. We made friends with the barista who promised to help us find a house if we move here or give us a place to stay if we visit. We exchanged information & we went on our way.

We walked back to Porto side to find some night life... All we found were some Americans, so we low key followed them to see where they were going.

Once they saw that we were following them we decided to give up.
So we sat at an outdoor TERASSE and had a pitcher of sangria to end the night.

We grabbed the train home & got to bed.

My arms hurt too much, I cant hear you

    13 Juli 2016, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    BEACH DAY!!

Since we had a beach house, we decided to take advantage & have a beach day!

We ended up all wrapped in blankets, hiding behind a wind breaker because it was TOO windy. I ended up falling asleep & getting my lower back burnt (yes mom, i know you told me to put on sunscreen).

I put my feet in the ocean just to say that ive been in both sides of the atlantic.

We walked down to the capel along the boardwalk, where we found this cafe along the beach where we had lunch.... And drinks & more drinks & next thing you know, we're back at our place with a 4 case of somersby each, making pasta.

We ended up going to our hosts apparetment to fix the wifi but ended up staying for 45 minutes talking, drinking portugese coffee, portugese beer & eating cake. We also play with Kaizen, their puppy, who is 1 year old golden. Reminded me so much of Pebbles!

We finished the night by playing drinking card games & watching storage wars.

We all packed & went to bed.

    Touch down in Lisbon

    13 Juli 2016, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Caught our train at 6:12 this morning. We brought shaunessa to the airport & said goodbye. :(

Breanna & I went back to city center for a bit because we had some time to kill before our flight at 12:30.

We got an Uber back to the airport who didnt speak any english... He was using google translate to communicate with us. He told us that his car was run on electricity & that he didnt have enough battery to get us there. He was going to drop us off in an area that we could get another uber & we wouldnt have to pay for it.... 20 minutes later, we arrive at the airport.... Da fuck.

Anyways. Our flight was delayed a half an hour & we only have an hour layover in lisbon to catch our next flight.

    We got this.. I think

Oh also, mental note: always fly with TAP portugal. They gave us häagen dazs ice cream for a 50 minute flight.

The most expensive place in the world

    13 Juli 2016, Swiss ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

With less than a 3 hour layover, we decided it would be a good idea to hit up city center.

We needed to get there quick & we couldn't find wifi for an uber so we got a cab.

Sooooooo funny thing about Switzerland is that its FUCKING expensive.... Excuse my french. Lets just say that the STARTING rate for a cab was 8.90€.... then 5€ per km!!

I can also check off Switzerland off my bucket list, so it was totally worth it.

We are back safe at the airport, with an hour to spare. We're hungry but cant afford to eat in this stupid expensive place so we will starve instead.

Switzerland, its been real... But I wont be back.
