    Anchorage Day 11

    June 23, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Today we had our final breakfast at the hotel and then had to keep ourselves occupied until 11:55 pm for our red-eye flight back to AZ. We walked around Anchorage and found plenty of attractions to keep up busy. We went on the site-seeing Red Trolley ride around town, then went to a spectacular showing of the Aurora Borealis-Northern Lights show at the Performing Arts Center. We also went to the old federal building for an exhibition of Alaska’s Public Lands, put on by the National Parks Service. For free, this was an amazing display that included 5 different short films about the Klondike Gold Rush, the 1964 Anchorage earthquake and the ecosystems of Denali. By the time we were done, it was time to meet our new friends from the cruise for dinner and then off to the airport. While we had an amazing, awesome, memorable trip, it was time to go home and sleep in our own bed! Goodbye Alaska.Read more

    Seward - Day 10

    June 22, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Today was a sad day, and we had to disembark our lovely ship, no more champagne 🍾, no more butler 😳. It’s funny how you don’t realize you need something until it’s gone…. The cruise is over but not the tour. So we boarded coaches for the drive from Seward over the Kenai Mountains to Anchorage. Along the way we stopped at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Centre where we saw some amazing animals and then on to the Alyeska Ski Resort for a lift ride to the top of the mountain. While it didn’t rain, it was quite foggy but we were able to get some great pictures. In Anchorage we stayed at The Hotel Captain Cook and had our last cocktail hour and dinner with our tour group. All good things must come to end.Read more

Silver Muse Day 9 - Hubbard Glacier

    June 21, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

Today was a special day. Not only were we sailing to the Hubbard Glacier but it was Jim’s birthday! Our butler surprised us with balloons and a special bottle of champagne but he was outdone by a gift Jim got from Kevin, Cody and Kaeli; a fabulous bottle of wine and an all expenses paid trip to San Diego to see the World Lacrosse Championship! You would think the day couldn’t get better but then we cruised to and around the Hubbard Glacier. This was the definitely the coldest day of the trip (the icy glacier might have had something to do with the temperature 🤪) and there was quite a bit of fog but just as we got close the fog started to lift we got some great pictures. Each cruise ship only spends about 30 minutes at the glacier and then we departed for our last port of Seward.Read more

Silver Muse Day 8 - Sitka

    June 20, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Today we anchored in the small town of Sitka, which has a very eclectic blend of native Alaskan, Russian and American culture. The small port town was charming and picturesque. Before our last tour excursion we hiked on our own through the Sitka National Historical Park and then to the Alaska Raptor Center. Where we saw a live demonstration with a bald eagle up close. She was massive and majestic at the same time. We made out way back to the pier just in time for our Sea Otter and Wildlife Cruise. We saw more whales, sea lions, and sea otters on the cruise. We also saw so many bald eagles flying around, they were like pigeons! Once again the weather was cooperating and we had another sunny day. Back on board we had a private cocktail hour and dinner with our tour group on the pool deck. While they provided heaters and blankets, it got very chilly by the end and most people passed on the Baked Alaskan desert. Not me though, I powered through the ice cream!Read more

Silver Muse Day 7 - Skagway

    June 19, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Today we moored in the small town of Skagway. We had breakfast on the ship and tendered to the pier. The excursion of the day was to a dog musher camp in the mountains. The weather was extraordinary again, bright sun and warm. We walked through a meadow to proceed to the camp. We rode in a German made MOG (think Jurassic Park tour) up to the musher camp. We immediately were put in sleds of 6 people and 13 dogs and off we went!!! So fun. After the ride, they gave a presentation and off to the shark tank (aka puppies that bite). After viewing the biting predators we were presented with 5 week old Alaskan Husky puppies to hold (they checked our pockets before we left) so adorable!

The bus dropped us off in downtown Skagway and we went to the Skagway Brewing Company where we drank the world renowned Spruce Tipped Ale (which supposedly contains your recommended daily dose of vitamin C). It’s very important to stay healthy on a cruise! We then walked through the town (3 square blocks) and then back on the ship where our butler placed our afternoon bottle of champagne and snacks. What an amazing day….again.

Silver Muse Day 6 - Juneau

    June 18, 2023 ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

After a slightly rough night at sea, we moored in Juneau. The only US state capitol that borders another country (Canada). On our way to a whale watching cruise we passed the governor’s mansion and guess what, you can’t see Russia. Oh well…. We proceeded to board a private cruise built to hold over 100 but we only had 25 in the group. Talk about exclusive. Words cannot express how gorgeous the weather and scenery was. Not one drop of rain, not cold and beautifully sunny. 15 minutes into the ride we spotted a mother humpback whale with her calf. The calf kept surfacing and then proceed to breach 4 or 5 times and we captured 3 on our cell phone. A breach takes so many calories that adult whales tend to conserve their energy but babies just like to play! After the day cruise we took the Goldbelt tram 1800 feet through the rain forest to the mountain house. The Juneau tram is one of the most vertical tramways in the world. We then hiked about a mile to the top of the mountain. What a view!Read more

Silver Muse Day 5 - Ketchikan

    June 17, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Today we anchored in Ketchikan, our first stop. Ketchikan is the fourth largest city in Alaska and they measure their rain in feet! Short bus ride for an excursion on a Dungeness Crab Cruise. Amazing cruise where we saw our first bald eagles! The deck hand waived some herring in the air, threw it in the water and the eagle soared down (200 mph) and snatched up the herring. We then pulled up a crab pot with Dungeness crabs that live in the brackish water, where the fresh water meets the sea. After the cruise, we feasted on an all-you-can-eat crab leg extravaganza! They were so good and sweet, even Jim ate 3 whole crabs! We finished the meal off with cheesecake flown in from Philadelphia.Read more

Silver Muse Day 4 - At Sea

    June 16, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

The entire day and night was spent at sea headed from Vancouver to Ketchikan. We explored the ship all day. Went to the workout room, the observation rooms and the casino! It was mostly smooth sailing until we hit open ocean and then got a little rough. We were supposed to meet up with some new friends for dinner and three of the four were sick, and two are still MIA. Hopefully we see them again.

Since tonight was the only formal night, we dressed in our finest and headed out to drinks with our tour group, then the Captain and his crew and then went to dinner. We followed that up with an onboard show in the lounge and called it a night.

    Vancouver Day 3

    June 15, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Today we started the day with a private breakfast with the Tauck group. Our luggage was taken from our hotel to the ship while we boarded a coach for a tour of Vancouver. We drove through Stanley park and stopped at the Totem Poles. We then got back on the bus and headed to the Capilano Suspension Bridge. The bridge is 460 feet in length and suspended 230 feet above the Capilano River. Not the most relaxing walk across a bridge we have ever had, especially since there are another 100 people doing the same thing! We then walked through the treetops and the Cliff Walk. Amazing views.

We got back on the coach and headed to Granville Island for “scattered” lunch. At 3:00 we finally “attempted” to board the ship. While Jim was on the manifest and listed at customs, Mary Ann (aka the sleeper cell terrorist) was not! Obviously it was human error but resulted in some very comical situations. After convincing Boarder Patrol, SilverSea to let me through, we finally boarded and were greeted in our room with a bottle of champagne! Let the fun begin!

    Edinburgh & The Tattoo

    August 15, 2019 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Stayed at the Kimpton Charlotte Square hotel in the new part of town. Went on a bus tour of the city and visit to Edinburgh Castle before we met the group for the final dinner at Contini on George Street (an Italian restaurant that was a former bank).

After the dinner we all walked up to the castle again to see The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo:

“Musical and cultural showcases from China, France, Germany, New Zealand, Nigeria and Trinidad & Tobago, as well as homegrown talent from the UK at the centre of it all. The Army is the lead Service this year and there will be scarlet and gold everywhere with three huge State Bands at full stretch. These are reinforced by the legendary sound of the Massed Pipes and Drums - more than 250 pipers and drummers from Scottish Regiments, the Pipers Trail and around the world - and the dazzle and athleticism of the Tattoo Dance Company, along with enchanting tunes from the Hjaltibonhoga fiddlers from the Shetland Isles.”
