    Kuala Lumpur

    March 15, 2019 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

After a late morning and over coffee and brunch, we booked a grab to take us to the Batu caves for temple exploration.

Our first free activity as backpackers, we were amazed at the vibrant colours and amazing architecture. But what is a attraction without the crowds.

Next stop Thean Hou chinese temple.
As expected dragons, lanterns, architecture, and vibrant colour galore, This temple has it all. Really awesome pitstop for the instagram pics.

    Some more KL

    March 16, 2019 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Time to hit the town for city sightseeing.
Kuala Lumpur or just KL, has lot's to offer so first stop, little india.
Buzzing indian market's, smells of spices and flowers, samoosa's and street food and shy but friendly people. Little india was just great for the casual shopping and food tasting.

Invited to a local indian restaurant, we decide to try out some curry and naan.
Indian people just know how to mix spices. Dipping naan in the curry souses, awesome combination of flavours and that little burn sensation.

Filled bellies, were of to some more city sightseeing. And whats the best way from a higher vantage point.
Sneaking into a hotel with a rooftop bar, we ordered some drinks, sat around the inhouse pool and just waited for the perfect sunset.

Admiring the Petronus buildings, we need to get pics up close.

Being a trend now, crowds crowds crowds. Snapping pics and disco flashes from left to right.

    Siem Reap - Floating village

    March 18, 2019 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Not a comfortable flight but landed in Cambodia, Siem Reap.

Time to get a grab and check into our hostel

Check in time is only 2pm so time for breakfast.
Walking around Siem Reap, we find a variety of food stalls, restaurants and a lot of westernized areas.

Settling for a eggs benedict, not the best I've had, but fills the gap.

Renting a tricycle named the batmobile.
We venture to the floating village of Kampong Phluk.

Paying tourists prices once again, We head to our boat.

It's hard to imagine how these people live sufficiently and in harmony the way they do.
We all should be humble for our blessings.

Our Bruce Wayne, takes us to the angkor ticket office so we can have a early morning start.

Once dropped off in the famous pub street, we try to experience the street culture - from fish cleaning your feet, to random weed deals, and rolled ice cream to eating fried insects and curried frog.

    Angkor wat sunrise

    March 19, 2019 in Cambodia ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Early morning for Siem Reaps most famous sunrise - Angkor wat.

Met with influx of tourists. We had to maneuver our way to the front for better view at the sunrise and reflection in the water.

Trying to skip ahead of the pack, we make our way to the east gate - opposite the traffic and suggested walking path.

Spending a couple of hours at the famous temple, we head to Angkor thom for some more architecture and photographers left, right and centre.

Now the temple used in the movie thomb raider.

    And lastly, byon temple.
This was my fav temple with its own characteristics and theme but yes hard to enjoy and appreciate the moment when have 100s people on same spot.

    The Killing Fields

    March 20, 2019 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Hard to imagine the horror and difficulties that happened in Cambodia in the 70s.

Pol Pot, triumph over the French and Americans, but yet disastrous towards his own people.

The Cambodian genocide killing fields are a number of sites where collectively more than a million people were killed and buried by the Khmer Rouge regime under ruling of Pol Pot.
Under order, they arrested and eventually executed almost everyone suspected of connections with the former government or with foreign governments, as well as professionals and intellectuals.
The judicial process for minor or political crimes, began with a warning. People receiving more than two warnings were sent for "re-education", which meant near-certain death by torture. The executed were buried in mass graves in order to save ammunition, the executions were often carried out using poison, spades or sharpened bamboo sticks.
Hard to think that a country can endure such dark times and yet ive not met an Cambodian without a smile on their face.
A lesson for all, no matter your circumstances, life is worth living and cannot be taken for granted.

    Good morning Vietnam!

    March 21, 2019 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

A very long bus ride from Cambodia.
We got stuck at a rest stop with no money as we exchanged all our money and forgot to keep some for some food on the road to Vietnam.

Met a friendly father figure Scottish gentleman on the bus, whom gave us some awesome tips for Vietnam.
He even bought us some food out of pitty and asked us to pay it forward.

Got to our bus stop and walked over to our hostel, just to discover after an hour of deliberation, that we were at the wrong hostel and had to walk another 3 km.

Finally at the correct hostel, dropped our bags and venture into the nightlife of the back roads of ho chi Minh.

Eating at a local vendor with Vietnamese only menu, we had to spin the dice and just eat what was placed infront of us.
Not knowing, we decided not to use google translate just to be sure.

Walking along empty dark streets, we stumble on an open coffee shop, yet they only sell beer and cocktails at that time of night, so beer it is.

With some younger crowd around us, it was very uncomfortable as they kept starting with commentary.

Feeling pressured, we left for some much needed sleep.

    Ho chi Minh

    March 22, 2019 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

After 1st night in the big city Ho chi Minh, where we had a weird night of food and drinks.
It's time to hit the streets for some vietnam coffee.

Some seriously crazy scooter traffic, scooter wars for street domination. Don't know how this system works but they seem to have it sorted.
Walking down the streets and alleys, we taste some good street food and egg coffee.

After a few hoursin town, we find it quit sad that no matter where you walk or stand, you'd be approached by some type of vendor forcing you to buy something.

The experience of being a foreigner is just like being a walking wallet, no matter being a tourist or budget traveller, it's all the same to them. $$$$

We make our way out to a cute venue Binh Quoi for a change to the busy city vibe.

    Mekong River

    March 23, 2019 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

1st activity in Nam - Mekong River
Excited to say the least as our expectations are high due to instagram pics we saw.

Booked a 2 day 1 night experience, I'm sure this will be a good few day's.

Before getting picked up by bus, we have to get another egg coffee and bunh mÿ.

On our way, we make for a "pit stop" at some bamboo/coconut factory. Surprise as what is going on, we get taken on a unexpected tour of bamboo and coconut clothes, utensils, medicines, confectionary, you name it.

After just buying a ice cream, we back on the bus for what's hopefully the mekong.
Off the bus and onto the boat.
The boat makes it's way as we stop for another "pit stop", this time a some honey and bee keepers. Great tasting honey and tee's but still no mekong.

From the honey, we get taken to where they make cocnut toffee. Great "pit stop" as we could have good portion tasters. Interesting process from coconut shaving, to toffee wrapping.

From toffee's we head down some local vendors for handcrafted goodies, but no mekong.

Finally, get to the main attraction and get split into groups for easy transportation. Get a quick safety briefing and on the boats we go.

Awesome and beautiful boats and view, sun scorching above, chocolate milky waters, and we're done. A full 1 kilometers row to where we get dropped off. Gave guide a tip, but was told not enough so took the tip back.

Not delivering to expectations, but hay, maybe tomorrow with the floating market.

Back on bus where tour groups split up.
Dropped off at hostel for the night, with the group deciding to hit the town and explore.

Great food stop and some good night market shopping.

    Floating Market

    March 24, 2019 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Quick egg on toast brekkie before we walk to our boat for the day.
Cruise towards the floating market but not before we pick up another group.

With the floating market in sight, we started to wonder where the actual small boats where?

When we got told that the smaller boats only come out 3-6am for the locals.
The bigger boats are for the "tourist".

So not getting us down, we whistle for some coffee and pineapple.

Lunch time. We get dropped off where our guide tells us he has special treats for lunch, cocnut rat, snake, frog and Vietnamese pancake.

Trying them all, I can't complain as the frog and rat was my favorite.

Heading back, we make a "pit stop" where rice paper is made. Showing us the process and tasting the goodies was a good ne off experience.

Still on cruise, we make yet another "pit stop", this time some dried fruits and meats.
Tasting the dried frog and fish was not to bad and would definitely eat again.

Back on land, we load up the bus and head back to Ho chi Minh.
